5 comments about One Child.
- I'm half-way through this book and I LOVE it so far!! I'm in school to become a teacher and we're reading this book. It has opened my eyes!!!
- This story gave me tears of sadness and tears of joy. While it is heartbreaking to learn of all the abuse Sheila has endured, it is
heartwarming to know that SOMEONE took the time and effort to encourage her and to reach out to her. This book is a wonderful testament to the power of love and the human spirit.
- I was required to get this book for my special education training that I need for my master's. This book was very interesting. It showed the good and bad things Torey Hayden did in the course of serving this one child, Sheila. I could not put it down.
- This amazing true story is about a violent 6-year old. You will be amazed by the details of how her teacher--Torey Hayden--reaches out to this child with special needs. This book is a must for teachers and parents.
- I was required to read this book in my high school psych class, as well as the sequel to it. It was a very captivating read, and the imagery really sticks with you. The teacher gave us a schedule of when we had to finish each chapter by, but I couldn't put the thing down.

5 comments about Being a Brain-Wise Therapist: A Practical Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology).
- This book fills the gap between theory and practice. The author does a superb job of applying interpersonal neurobiology to the "doing-ness" of therapy, in the room, with real patients/clients. She's particularly adept at capturing the subtle, non-verbal experience of what it actually feels like to sit with a patient during moments of intense emotional upheavals. She skillfully weaves together the theory and the practice; reading her book has affected my own practice and has increased my awareness of how I am "being," moment to moment, with my patients. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is interested in contemporary neuroscience findings--especially and particularly to practitioners of psychotherapy who want to apply neuroscience findings to their clinical practices.
- What a wonderful integration of neuroscience with compassionate psychotherapy! The author does a very skillful job of making the complexities of neuroscience understandable, and integrating this information with the clinical applications that are necessary to making it work on a practical level. Required reading for my intern therapists...
-
This book does what it proclaims: Translating the most recent brain research into ways that psychotherapists can effectively work with their clients.
- Start Here with Being a Brain-Wise Therapist- the most recent and integrated book on the path to learning about Interpersonal Neurobiology. Well-written and easy to read...Bonnie has written an informative and enjoyable book after having digested and practiced the latest information on the brain and relationships. The book is based on her years of experience as a therapist, educator, and mindfulness practitioner. She utilizes the latest information from personal conversations with leading neuroscientists, collaborating on written submissions for the Global Association of Interpersonal Neurobiology (mindgains.org), her own research, and her extensive practice which includes supervising interns and colleagues. Just like the smart, warm, and supportive woman she is, Bonnie Badenoch has found a way to nurture our understanding of the brain and relationships throughout this compelling book.
- Neuroscientific discoveries have begun to provide not just cutting-edge data on brain functions, but translate over into changes in psychotherapy and medicine. This book brings interpersonal neurobiology into the counseling arena, reviewing basic principles on brain structure, function, and how this relates to diagnostic approaches. Any college-level collection strong in psychology or medicine needs this, which adds exercises and case histories for more lively coverage.

5 comments about Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy (with Web Site, Chapter Quiz Booklet, and InfoTrac ).
- I used this book for an advanced counseling class. I will keep it for my library.
- This is an outstanding source to orientate counseling graduate students in the systems of psychotherapy.
- This was a very thorough and easy-to-read book about the various theories of counseling and psychotherapy. I, personally, often need "supplemental" things to go with a text to help me learn the material. This book did a great job of explaining the concepts, comparing and contrasting theories, and giving examples of practice and assessment. Although someone else that wrote a review didn't particularly care for the student manual, I found it extremely helpful while preparing for my exams. I read the chapters first, and actually enjoyed the readings, and found that "brushing up" with the student manual before my exam was very helpful, and reinforced the theoretical concepts. Also, the Case Study book was required for my class, and is an excellent source for understanding the theories "in action", so to speak. When learning these types of theories, it is very helpful having concrete examples to work with, and Corey does an excellent job with that. Over all, a great text, with lots of info that is clearly illustrated with examples and case studies.
- I really meant to order the textbook, not the student manual. For the price, I thought that's what I was getting.
- I ordered this book while studying for the National Board of Certified Counselor's Exam. (NCC) I was familiar with Corey's textbooks that I used while completing my master's in THE EIGHTIES- but this volume far surpassed my expectations.
The volume is filled with information that makes the theories and theorist's discussed so much more available and more easily integrated. I wish the books I had had as an undergrad were so well written and full of useful tables and easily compared information. The biographies of the different therapist/theorists also helped categorize my knowledge and made for historical understandings and their effects on our society.
I have already referenced the book in some continuing education classes I have taught and recommend it for the professional as well as the "lay" reader. Best if all- I passed the NCC exam seventeen years after my last licensing exam! Kudos!

5 comments about Prescription for Natural Cures.
- This book was highly recommended to students by a certified Nutritional Consultant staff member who works at The Global College of Natural Medicine, CA. where I am attending an online 12 month Nutritional Consultant course. He uses this book regularly and so do the students. If you want good information, whether you're in private practice or an individual, this is the book.
- This book contains a lot of useful information as far as basic nutrition provided in a format that is easy to access and comprehend. It is not going to give you a quick fix or magic cure, but instead reinforces the concept of treating the whole body nutritionally to attain a balance. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in health and nutrition and would like a reference tool.
- I've always leaned toward natural cures and remedies since watching three family members die/dying of cancer, wasting away to nothing and being tortured through chemo and radiation.
This book has:
Symptoms
Other diseases/conditions that can mimic the same prognosis
Diet recommendations (Foods to avoid, Foods that make condition worse, Foods that soothe/heal)
Herbal Remedies
Holistic Remedies
Aromatherapy Suggestions
Reflexology Points/Suggestions
Acupuncture Points/Suggestions
Case Studies/Surveys
Causes and Solutions
I borrowed this book to my neighbor who has frequent bouts of Gall/Kindey stones and had multiple surgeries. He changed his diet to the recommended suggestions and is taking Cranberry extract and other ideas from the book and is doing great now!
The book tells you what your Doctors don't!
- This book is definitely a good catch. Very informative in alternatives to natural remedies and in explaining the symptoms of each. Very good book.
- I have not tried any of the cures, but the book has ton of information for the price.

5 comments about Clinical Anesthesiology, 4th Edition.
- It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.
My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well.
- I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.
- I have to agree with the other 5 star writers. Pound for pound (makes a difference in your backpack) this book is hard to beat. I find it more complete than Secrets of Anesthesia, and more user friendly than Miller. If you want to learn 100 ways to not do something, and read conflicting studies then go for Miller, otherwise "M & M" is king. Besides, I challenge anyone to bring Barash or Miller into the OR with them for a quick reference...
- I will be starting school this fall, and found this book to be a great introduction. It is easy to read, and the highlights and charts made memorization easy. It was easier to read then Baby Barash, as a beginner.
- My primary source for the ABA exam. I passed the 8/05/08 exam!!! A great source. Read it three times before the exam and if you understand the information you will pass the exam. The regional section was particularly helpful.

5 comments about Cell-Level Healing: The Bridge from Soul to Cell.
- Interesting story of how the author went from practical, linear, western medical thinking to being a healer. She offers lots of practical advice that you can use right now. This is the new medicine.
- "Cell-Level Healing: The Bridge from Soul to Cell" by Joyce Whitely Hawkes is an insightful source of wisdom and information that bridges conventional scientific cell biology with spiritual healing.
The book is scientifically grounded in terms of biophysics and also contains the author's personal insights from her own near death experience together with alternative healing techniques.
Ultimately our consciousness is key to our healing journey!
Simple and profound!
Better yet read "Cell-Level Healing" together with "Nexus" a New Age novel about consciouness, healing, psychological and spiritual insight.
Nexus: A Neo Novel
- haven't read the book yet, but will. after attending seminars at sivananda's yoga retreat on bahamas (don't just buy the book, go there too next time she will be there) i've been waiting impatiently to buy this book. i loved her lectures! what expecially attracted me and helped me find validity to them was the combination of modern science and biophysics with a spiritual healing approach.
- Attracted to this book since I was in the medical field and have been involved in energy healing for years. Could have included more medical facts, but nonetheless, author gives "practical" exercises anyone can do, along with adequate explanations of "why" they work. I dog-earned, underlined, and copied some of the colored pictures with affirmations on them to post where I could see them. Having received just prior to another back surgery, I reworked some of her visualizations/affirmations to personalize for my situation. Had such a minute amount of blood loss during very long surgery, the doctor was astounded. Lots of applicable information in this beautifully illustrated and profound book. Cellular memory and consciousness has been around for some time but maybe the credibility of the author will put this book into the hands of medical professionals who can best utilize this information for their patients for more dramatic healing results.
- I am a healer. This is an outstanding book. Let your body/mind/spirit connect and go to that quiet inner space and contemplate your "SELF". If you are new to these concepts you will marvel at the thoughtful manner the data is expressed.
This book is worth your time and money. Forget the science, grasp the spiritual. Is that not where we all live?
peace and love...

5 comments about Migraine.
- I found the book helpful and interesting. I don't know why some reviewer's found it so difficult. It is true that he describes many case studies and that only some of those would coincide with any one person's experience (thank goodness, I'd hate for anyone to have all those symptoms). Perhaps 75% of it did not apply to me personally, but that part was interesting too. Some of the case studies were similar to my father's migraines, some similar to my mother's. My sister and my nephew have slightly different symptoms that were described. The book connected all of them. But, what made me really grateful for the book is that Sacks described (as very rare occurrences) several bizaree incidents in my life which I had never been able to explain. Times when I had told a doctor what I had experienced and had him shrug his shoulders, or even get angry and say, "How can you expect me to diagnose anything based on that?" Or simply not believe me. For many years, migraines ruled my life. It was not unusual for one to last for 3 or 4 days. Intense, unremitting pain. It took a couple of decades for them to be diagnosed. I can't tell you how many times I was treated for sinus infections. Even after diagnosis and referral to a neurologist, there was no treatment that was effective. Then my doctor started telling me about that a new drug would soon be released that might help. I hounded his office, asking if it was out yet. It was delayed and delayed, but at last Imitrex was released, first as an injection, now it is a pill. And for me it works. My doctor says that it works for approximately 70% of migraine sufferers. It changed my life. Now I can take this pill, lie down in a dark room if possible, and an hour later, the headache is gone. My neurologist said that they have now identified a flawed gene that fails to produce a protein that is common in many migraine sufferes. Imitrex interacts with the neuro receptor that is looking for that protein. But like Sacks said, migraines are overdetermined. There are many factors involved and he covered most of them in his book. He missed one. Dehydration plays a major role in my migraines. If my head begins to hurt, the first thing I do is drink a glass of water.
- This is very informative, scholarly and interesting at the same time. I read it and look at the illustrations and am amazed at how many of my life's experiences have been related to the migraine. The condition changes - or can change - throughout a lifetime. I had no idea.
- I have suffered from migraines for years, however, many of my experiences were strictly visual: without pain. I have enjoyed reading Dr. Sacks' work before and this book is no exception to the rule. I am an artist. When I saw the color plates showing what other non artists experienced visually during or before a migraine, I was floored. These images explained it all to me. I have seen the same types of things since I was a child.
Interesting book and very helpful to those who "suffer" from migraine. I put suffer in quotes because I enjoy the visual disturbances unless they occur when I am trying to read or online! I am sorry I didn't purchase this book sooner.
- This is a pretty good review of the varieties of migraines and the various symptoms people experience.
However, it does not actually explain the physiology of migraine; the actual cause of migraine.
It was interesting, but didn't really provide any answers, just descriptions.
- Oliver Sacks is better in theaters than read. I consider "The man who mistook his wife with a hat" the only readable book from him.

5 comments about The Elements of Legal Style.
- I read a review where someone said they read this and it got them on the law review. That was what I was looking for, so I bought it and the same thing happened to me (which is incredible considering my grades). This book gave me the tools to express what I want to say without trying to cram everything into one sentence. Somehow, after reading this book, I felt much less inhibited about my writing and more confident that I was using correct grammar, sentence structure, etc. Now that I think about it I'd like to read it again. I'd highly reccomend this to someone who wants to write legal papers that are actually readable and have some style.
- First introduced to Bryan A. Garner at one of his brief writing seminar, several years ago, I have since been a loyal reader of his works.
This book is (1) a reference book, (2) an invaluable resource, (3) more than just a grammar or style book ever thought of being, (4) chocked full of historical information and legal literary quotes, (5) presented in a humorous and accessible manner, and (6) the standard to which all legal writers should aspire.
Poor writing and the use of legalese have always been bug-a-boos of mine. And, over the lifetime of my legal practice, having to slave over thousands of statutes, briefs, decisions, motions, etc., has only intensified my belief that too few lawyers know how to write well, and that the legal profession should abolish the use of legalese from the practice of law.
In Mr. Garner, I have found a champion. In "The Elements of Legal Style", writers wishing to take their craft beyond the stars will find a valuable cache of information that will lay the foundations to improve their writing and persuading skills. He shows you how to remove the legalese from your writing, how to make your writing dynamic and exciting, and how to use your writing to better persuade. This book, along with "The Winning Brief", should be the foundation of your arsenal of writing tools.
- In short, this is the first and only style guide that I have ever been excited to continue reading and share with others. It has really improved my writing.
- I am a physician who tested out of all college English to focus on science. Writing chart notes, scientific articles, or even parts of textbooks does not prepare one for the type of writing one must do when performing legal work.
Scientific-technical writing, legal writing, or the best-selling novel all require different writing styles. Mr. Garner's book must be a help to law students based on other reviews but importantly to me; it is very accessable to those who have never attended law school.
Legal style is a "style" that is important in the profession of law. If you do any work in this area at all, whether it is on the stand or writing essays, it behooves the non-lawyer to read this book. So, even though I agree with the glowing reviews from lawyers, this book may be even more important to those of us who must do legal work but have never been to law school.
- This book gets a 5/5 for substance but a 1/5 for style.
To be fair, the writer of any book about writing has the heightened duties of the bomb-disposal technician or the internal affairs detective. Garner is fastidious to a fault and, given his audience, this is understandable. But the final product sounds like William F. Buckley, Jr. reading the phone book through Stephen Hawking's voice synthesizer. This is not boring, but distractingly awkward. I found myself paying more attention to the author's ecclectic phrase choices and mincing composition than his message. Garner weighs the advantanges of the spare "Attic" style of writing (Holmes) against the florid "asiatic" style (Cardozo), then somehow manages to adopt the worst of both of them.
(And did he really just say "asiatic?")
As a member and fan of the "California" school of legal writing (Kozinski) and rhetoric (Nancy Grace), I admit my distaste for this book is personal. The information itself is valuable. However, the content here overlaps substantially with "The Redbook: A Manual on Legal Style (2d Ed.)." As a day-to-day reference work, that book is a much better bang for your buck.

5 comments about The ABSITE Review.
- I'm a surgical intern about to take the ABSITE for the first time in a few short weeks. I have been carrying the 2nd edition of Fiser with me everywhere I go for the last 2 months or so. It is great for those 5 minute downtimes while waiting for room turnover or while the MVC is in the scanner. The new edition is easier on the eyes with the color images (yay pictures!). While there may still be small errors, for the most part this book gives you great, concise, important information on the major areas of Gen. Surgery. One good strategy is to read a chapter in your main text, then read the corresponding chapter in Fiser during downtime the next day or two, then do questions on the subject.
- This second edition of the absite review book is even easier to read, with more pertinent diagrams, algorithms and important info for the test. Highly recommended as a principle sourse of review for your absite.
- This and Rush make a good review before the Absite for the lower levels. It might be too simple for the advanced levels, but at least intern and R2 would benefit from this book. Was a very good review, just lacked a little detail on some things. (but had some very good high-yield points!)
- Tiny print, hard to read, incomplete, doesn't cover all major surgery topics, and is woefully inadequate for the ABSITE or the board exams.
- I had the previous version, and bought this one when mine disappeared from a call room. Even better than the first edition. There really isn't anything else available that compares. If you know this material, a good to excellent score should follow.

5 comments about Engaging Autism: Helping Children Relate, Communicate and Think with the DIR Floortime Approach.
- This is a good introduction to the Floortime method. It includes lots of practical tips and real-life examples.
- Nice to know more than one method for teaching children with Autism. This book has great information to help you individualize teaching for young children with Autism.
- This is a good book. Bought it for my sister and my sister and my brother-in-law
are finding it very informative and useful.
On the same topic, ADHD as Autism requires lot of pointers for the parents, when
their kids/family members or friends are diagonised. May be there are lot of pointers
and information already, but I find it hard to get some directions on this.
Also, the medical community over here in US could share their invaluable knowledge and
expertise to countries like India, where this is new and parents like my sister are
suffering, lacking all this information, guidance and pointers - I really mean that.
Thanks for all involved in writing this book.
- Engaging Autism has been one of my mainstays for working with families with children in the autism spectrum. I have been able to teach them simple strategies from the Floortime method that allows them to quickly see glimmers of engagement with their children. Dr. Greenspan's explanations of why these children have problems and how to help them find us worth joining is very thoughtful.
Parents that I have recommended this book to have come back with a better appreciation of the struggles and strengths of their children. They are more ready to get down to their child's developmental social-emotional level to allow them to grow, thus enabling them to be available to the other therapies that are needed.
Not everyone has a Floortime/DIR trained therapist available to work with them, but with this book they at least have some strategies to include as they play with, work with, and learn to enjoy the child they have.
- Really well-written and so on target. I have shared it with several families and their response to it has been so positive...they feel they now have a realistic way to try to play with and communicate with their child. We are also using this approach with several students at our school and witnessing appropriate responses from them.
