5 comments about Pediatric Dosage Handbook: Including Neonatal Dosing, Drug Administration, & Extemporaneous Preparations (Pediatric Dosage Handbook).
  1. I'm loving the detail and information given for each medication. It is a great resource for me. I have gone through and marked my commonly used medications for easy reference.

  2. This book is comprehensive for pediatric clinicians. Format is easy to use and very through information.

  3. This is a great source to have access to (especially if you're looking up pediatric drugs at home and don't have access to UptoDate or Micromedex). It is a thorough reference. The major down-side is that it lacks an index for generic/trade names. Maybe it's there and I still haven't found it, but this is a problem when one is trying to quick reference a drug. Nevertheless, I haven't found a superior drug reference in a readily available book in pediatrics (online, I'd say Micromedex is even more complete, but in a book, this is the best). Also, for neonatal dosing, I would prefer Neofax.

  4. Very extensive and detailed information about all drugs . It's all you need to prescribe a drug with safety.
The appendix section contains very useful information of clinical and basic laboratory values
It's the most complete and specific book I have ever seen about pediatric drug prescription
    I love it

  5. Is a great drug resource. Has everything you need to know and it easy to use. My only complaint is that there is no index by brand name and the drugs are listed by generic, so if you do not know the generic name you are kind of stuck. Contains adult doses as well, and includes other pediatric medicine resources.

5 comments about Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation (Neonatal Resuscitation: Textbook).
  1. The new NPR 5th edition is an excellent resource for anyone needing to prepare for certification for NPR (i.e. ob/neonatal nurses, OB's, pediatricians, perinatologists, etc)

It is easy to read, has repitition that allows reinforcement of principles learned throughout the text. Quizzes appear throughout to assist in retention and integration of information.

The DVD-ROM included in the book is improved over the last one. For the visual learner, this is most helpful. The DVD-ROM includes, computer generated images, scenarios, and the book quizzes as well. An excellent adjunct to the book, that can be used as a stand-alone review.

There are a few discrepancies between the book and the DVD-ROM, but overall the set together is worth the price.

There is also the availability to take the NPR written examination on-line and then locate an instructor to complete the practical sessions. This is helpful for any busy practitioner when needing to schedule this exam, since the written component has close to 100 questions.

  2. I'm a computer person moreso than a booky.......
So using the DVD that comes with the book was VERY helpful.. It has the exact information the book offers and MORE!

  3. even though i bought it used, the condition of the book is wonderfully new. i was also glad to have received the book on time( indicated during purchase). i would gladly deal with the seller again.
    faru, chicago

  4. Helped me a lot in my neonatal resuscitation licensure. The CD was a good source by itself.

  5. Make sure you get this book, its the most updated and is very user friendly!

5 comments about Heal Pelvic Pain: The Proven Stretching, Strengthening, and Nutrition Program for Relieving Pain, Incontinence,& I.B.S, and Other Symptoms Without Surgery.
  1. I am a myofascial trigger point therapist who works with many pelvic pain patients. This book is a wonderful primer for patients suffering from pelvic pain. It explains why people get pelvic pain and how tight muscles are a major culprit. The book gives easy to understand instructions of self treatment options. It talks about other things that affect pain such as nutrition and stress. I will be recommending this book to my pelvic pain patients from now on. Erika Bourne, RN, CMTPT.

  2. This is a great self-help book to heal pelvic pain. The introduction to the pelvic floor musculature with simple diagrams is easy to follow and understand. She describes many disorders that are the result of weakened and dysfunctional muscles, nerves and tendons of the pelvis. A questionnaire starts off the self-help section that is completed monthly to monitor progress and determine whether you are ready to move on to the next section(s) in the book. The stretching chapter in the book provides easy to follow directions and pictures followed by strengthening chapters. A chapter on self massage was also easy to follow. The chapter on nutrition was very basic but a good primer. It was nice to read a book that addresses sexual dysfunction and the importance of sex in our relationships in a professional manner. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to heal pelvic floor dysfunctions such as urinary incontinence, painful intercourse, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, fecal incontinence, urinary urgency, to name just a few examples.

  3. I have been suffering from pain with intercourse, constipation and urinary burning and urgency for many years now. The doctors that I saw just kept saying that it was an infection and kept giving me antibiotics and other medications. I recently purchased this book and starting doing the exercises and massage techniques and right away I noticed an improvement. This book is an easy-read and informative self-help book. I highly recommend it and I even brought it to my Md's to show them that there is another solution besides medication.

  4. I found this book to be helpful and comprehensive. It answered a lot of questions that I couldn't get answers from my healthcare provider. It is easy to read and a great self-help book. The photos and illustrations are very helpful. I feel much better. I recommend this to anyone suffering from Pelvic Pain.

  5. Finally a book for women that is long overdue. Amy Stein's HEAL PELVIC PAIN is clear, well written, easy to follow and chock-full of potentially life-changing advice. This is a invaluable book for women suffering from any one of the myriad pelvic floor disorders. But it is also a book that is equally as valuable for women, young and old, who want to avoid those disorders. I would recommended this book to all my women friends - and have.

5 comments about Pastured Poultry Profits.
  1. Joel does a great job overall. I'd just like to see better illustrations, especially concerning pen construction and processing the birds. I highly recommend newbies take a look at Herrick Kimball's [...]. He does a great job illustrating how to process the birds, with great pictures. Also, the homemade plucker, which he designed, is great. It plucks 3 birds in about 10-15 seconds! Now that's good stuff! But I'd highly recommend Joel's book, in spite of the poor illustrations. Maybe he should have a talk with his publisher and put out a new edition. We just did our first 50 Cornish X Rocks, largely based on his methods and it went off without a hitch...well, I accidentally ran over a couple of birds with the pen as I moved it. So, those were a couple of "hitches", but some of the little buggers just didn't want to march to my well-sung Marine Corps marching songs! Imagine that! So, the little non-hackers went off to join Colonel Sanders in a better place. Maybe he can get them to march:)

  2. Grow some chickens, improve your land, make alot of money, eat well and ENJOY LIFE! Learn how in this book and in ALL of Joel Salatins' books!

  3. there is nothing in this book that is not useful and to the point. no waffle, tried and workable advice, clearly written.
the author has been a successful farmer for at least 20 years, so he knows what he is talking about.

    THANK YOU, JOEL SALATIN!

  4. While some complained in their reviews about this book, I enjoyed reading it. If you are into farming on a small scale without going overboard on getting set up this book will inspire you. Covers a lot of information on rasing poultry for a profit. While the focus is on pastured poultry with movable trailers it will also work for just free range as well. A great additon to our farm library.

  5. I like this book ok. I have a few problems with it though. It doesn't read very smoothly, seems the author goes back and forth between active and passive voice. I had to re-read sentences quite often. As far as the information goes, it seems that the author has found the one and only way to pasture chickens and he lets you know it. Now, maybe he has, I don't know. I will be using a lot of his advice and methods, but not all. Overall, I'm glad to have this book.

5 comments about My Voice Will Go With You: The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson, M.D..
  1. My Voice Will Go With You is subtitled The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson. The tales do teach, inform, and show how you can change your behavior and those around you for the better. The book contains techniques to help raise children, break old habits, enable you to overcome your limitations, and are thoroughly enjoyable to read. Both individuals and professionals can benefit from reading and re-reading this book.

I bought the book to find out more about Erickson's therapeutic techniques and found that the techniques could be applied in my own life to change my behavior and influence the behavior of others around me.

  2. Ground-breaking and revolutionary describe the work of Milton Erickson. With no direct method available to comprehend Erickson's complex therapy style Teaching Tales allows insight into his work. The understanding one develops from reading the highly engaging text comes about as each tale represents a piece of the puzzle of what it is to be a human learning our way through this world. Always focused on the fundamental experience of people, Erickson through the exposition of Sidney Rosen, elucidates his basic and profound vision of what makes all of us play, work, and especially learn to be better.

  3. A unique approach to psychiatry and psychotherapy - bends the walls of these disciplines to reveal an approach based on connecting with the unconscious of the analysand through a variety of techniques, such as conversational hypnosis, talk therapy, self-hypnosis and behavioral modification.

Highly recommended for all pychotherapists, hypnotists, counselors, and psychiatrists willing to expand their horizons and their vocational range.

Also, for the laymen, a fascinating look at a legend in action and at the art of talk therapy. One comes away from this book with a personal regard for Erickson - for his courage to not only push through his personal physical disabilities, but his unquenchable love of life. An uplifting, refreshing read.

Note, this book focuses not so much on hypnosis as on Erickson's broader approach to therapy, although hypnosis is certainly a component.

    My highest recommendation.

  4. Great writings of a great man. Highly recommended for students of hypnosis for a glimpse of what the best did. A wonderful learning tool into graceful changework.

  5. My interest, and fascination, with Milton Erickson's approach to psychological issues came about as a result of reading, "Uncommon Therapy" by Jay Haley. The many examples of Erickson's unconventional approach were an intellectual treat to read, consider, and extrapolate upon. In attempting to follow this train of interest, I purchased "My Voice Will Go With You - The Teaching Tales of Milton H. Erickson" edited with commentary by Sidney Rosen. Rosen's examples of Erickson's therapy are not as numerous nor as pointed. And, to further dilute the adventure, Rosen offers lenghty analysis, sometimes quite strained in my opinion, of Erickson's motives and or thought processes in arriving at solutions or providing advice to patients. Whereas I would wholeheartedly recommend "Uncommon Therapy" I cannot do the same for "My Voice Will Go With You." It is more a pendantic study suitable for, perhaps, psychology students with a goal of ferreting out every last detail of Erickson's practice. For those of us fascinated, intrigued, surprised, and entertained by Erickson's unique take on people and behavior, we will have to look elsewhere for a good follow up to "Uncommon Therapy."

5 comments about Boards and Wards: A Review for USMLE Steps 2&3: A Practical Guide (Boards and Wards Series).
  1. this book is very useful for med school clinical years. provides a great overview that is brief and very useful on the wards. highly recommended.

  2. This book is a good book to have in your collection of medical references. It is concise and bulleted with pertinent information for wards, as the name suggests, as well as studying for the USMLE. It is easy to understand and easy to navigate when searching for something very specific. It is a small book but not small enough to carry in your white coat during rounds unless you have big pockets or if your pockets are empty, (most medical professionals I know don't have their pockets empty due to all the crap we have to carry), you might be able to fit it in there snuggly. All in all its a good book to have as a refresher or reference but i don't find it's good enough to use as the only resource when studying for USMLE.

  3. Buy it, take it to your local office supply store, get it wire bound with plastic covers for about $3-$4 and it'll last through your clinical years and internship. The only review book that can actually be carried in your white coat making it TRULY USEFUL on rotations. In fact, it's PERFECT for rotations as you can STUDY on the go whenever you have a few minutes PLUS it helps you with pimp questions and patient management. Psych, Derm, EKG, neuro, outpatient, IM, surgery and more.

  4. My vpurchase came in the time specified and in the condition that was stated also. I will definately make future purchases from this seller

  5. I don't know why this book got so many good reviews anyway. I bought it expecting too much and it was a complete disappointment. Actually whatever was in that book I already knew. It is an introduction to the basics of medicine but it doesn't offer much overall.

5 comments about Prescription for Herbal Healing: An Easy-to-Use A-Z Reference to Hundreds of Common Disorders and Their Herbal Remedies.
  1. This is an exellent source for all things herbal. I highly reccomend it for the apprentice and well versed herbalist alike.

  2. I bought this for my brother's graduation from Pharmacy college - for reference to the world of herbal medecines sold in most retail drug stores and health food stores. I was disappointed in the book - it did not include some of the remedies I have tried for my IBS and candida. Also, I was hoping for information on how much/how often to use the herbs/oils/powders, etc. I would have exchanged it but needed to give my brother something for graduation party.

  3. not what I expected and not as useful as was advertised. Very hard to find the correct information and I believe there is a lot of information that could be in this book that is not. Disappointed if I spent more than a few dollars on the book but for just a few bucks used and shipping I am sure I will get my $7 total out of the book sooner or later.

  4. This has got to be the most comprehensive herbal resource available. Easy to look up by herb and by condition. Fully explanations. Finding the recommended products (in the correct form) is sometime the biggest challenge!

  5. I had this book when I had cancer in 2003; it was wonderful. It was the most extensive and knowledgeable book on herbs for cancer that I have ever seen. It's chock full of information. What I also appreciated very much is that she discusses the various chemotherapies and what herbs to take to complement them. I had never seen anything like that. And when she said that anybody who had Hodgkin's should never take ascorbic acid, that was information never seen. It was a wonderful companion during my illness and I am very grateful for it. I wish that it was updated.

5 comments about Before & After, Revised Edition: Living and Eating Well After Weight-Loss Surgery.
  1. I have to admit, I found this book disappointing. I am pre-surgery, in the qualifying stages, and have done a lot of research. I hear about dumping and emotional changes and mood swings and changes in relationships with people, as well as with food. So I expected this book would give me a realistic view of what to expect ahead.
I know each person's experience is different, but I got tired of the diary of what gourmet food she was able to eat each day after surgery...plenty of ! points throughout the narrative, like a pre-teen's diary, but not a lot of useful information. I was also disappointed she went right on eating absolutely everything pre-surgery to say goodbye to food, and then found she can still enjoy gourmet delights, just in tiny portions. Most of us are not gourmets, and it is not a healthy approach to weight loss surgery to have your last supper three times a day every day before surgery. You need to get your head in the right place first, and for me, it is breaking the food addiction. Susan obviously is able to continue her love affair with food without skipping a beat, just tiny portions. There's very little about the emotional changes to expect, etc. - her life seems perfect, she can afford the plastic surgery afterward, etc. There was nothing about the psychological aspects involved, just the good times with friends and sharing delicious food and being loved. It just wasn't the kind of book I'd hoped for.
On the positive side, though, I will say the recipes are good, and are broken down into WLS portions and normal portions.
I guess I was expecting a "real" person with real issues, but instead this book is about someone who has her cake and eats it too.

  2. This book was an easy read and has the experiences of a WLS patient goes through before and after surgery and an example of the 'dumping' episode one hears about pre-surgery. I have travelled internationally extensively in my career and I fully understand what the Author is saying about her great travels, eating, spending etc. and because she can do them now as before she felt prohibited to do so, she inturns shares her experiences. I didn't take this as a 'look at how great I am' book, rather a look at life and your eating life after surgery. Her receipes look easy and most ingrediants can be purchased at your store. It is not a surprise that the author has a website of product one can purchase. I do find them extremely high in price and the average income person would only be able to afford a few items.

  3. This book is the real deal - tells you the good and bad. I really enjoyed it - read the whole book in one day! I am convinced this is the right path for me - I am so glad I am in the program at in Rochester NY

  4. I've been contemplating GBS for a few years now and bought this book back then. I've read it now and find it very informative and the recipes that she has provided will be great for me post op. That's the time that I worry about the most - what to ingest, when to ingest it, and how to take care of myself without screwing this up. It's well written, logical and gives plenty of food options.

  5. When I first read the good and bad review I thought "I can't be that bad" but it is!.
I am really disappointed with this book. It's like she is still in denial about why she needed the RNY in the first place not just the weight but the psychological reasons. She never goes into why she gained the weight. I am not interested in which celebrities got the WLS.

I bought this book hoping to get some REAL insight of what it does to you physically and emotionally. I got sick of reading how she goes out and has a wonderful time shopping at Macy's, eating a special sugar free cheesecake especially prepared for her. After 30 pages I was really wondering if people where endorsing her to mention all the brand names, because I am sure it is important to put in your diary for which car manufacturer you brother works for and that not just any pair of jeans didn't fit but the ones from DNKY. God forbid she actually wrote that she was actually feeling, it's like super perky Barbie.
This book is superficial and bland, lacking emotion it feels like a bad tv commercial IMO.

Believe it or not you'll actually find better WLS experiences on youtube.

5 comments about Iserson's Getting Into a Residency: A Guide for Medical Students, 7th Edition.
  1. Let me start by first saying that if you don't have this blue book, you're missing on an important piece of the pie of getting into a residency in the US. This book has it all and it starts from the very beginning.

The first part helps students pick out their specialty. An extensive text explaining each and every specialty with its pros, cons and fellowships are written in minute details. From how many people are accepted per year to how much money these guys make in the end. It even goes to what personality may fit a specific specialty and not the othe. The book is the most widely used text for students who have still yet to find their calling in a medical specialty. After reading the chapter, you will definitely know where you want to go and you will actually have your reasons for making such a decision.

The second part takes you on an overview of all th exams that a person has to complete and what they actually mean when a person does them. A section on the IMG exams of CSA and TOEFL are also highlghted.

The third part talked about the application process. Everything is covered. From what you have to wear for your interview, how you get there, and how you even pack your suitcase is shown in diagrams and illustrations. Iserson goes into the details of the interview extensively and actually gives out a detailed array of what are the major areas of questioning applicants maybe asked in their interview. As a person who has gone through this gruelling process recently, a lot of what has been written gets actually asked.

IMGs are covered in some chapters of the book and there is one whole chapter that talks exclusively about them. Though, the chapters are good, there are better texts that have been written for IMGs. This book, however, can be used to cover everything else in that matter.

Though it's an extensive read, it's really worth it and since the book is moving on to its sixth edition (last edition, 5th, was in 2000), it means further demand is making this book as popular as ever and still the number one reference to a great number of medical students.

  2. The new, 6th edition is scheduled to release from the presses on April 15, 2003. Check out Galenpress.com or here after that time to get the updated version.

  3. I am a IMG and found this book extrememly useful . This book explains in step by step about the entire process of the Residency application and the Match process.

The first part of the book deals with the various specialities and their pros and cons. The second part of the book deals with various process of residency application including on how to work on your personal statement , clerkship and reference letters etc.

There is a specific chapter on IMG and it deals with issues specific to IMG's .

The latter part of the book deals with Interviewing process and on how to deal with post match scramble.

Overall I was extremely satisfied with this book and would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is planning to go through the Residency process.

  4. I bought this book thinking that I needed it to be able to apply for residency programs. I found the book, even the most recent edition, to be very outdated in terms of the matching process and what programs are looking for. I don't think much went into updating the new edition because for a few years now, the Board exams have been computerized and the book still refers to the old 2 day process and it also stated that the osteopathic residency process was not through ERAS, which it is and has been for the last few years also. Another very minute example: the book recommends that women should only wear a skirt suit to interviews. I know women who have, but it is just as common if not more so to wear pants-the author must be a dinosaur to think that women have to wear a skirt in order to appear professional. I know these are not the most important things when applying but I feel that they are a good gage on the quality of the rest of the information provided.

I also wanted information on what to include in my personal statement but the most I got out of this book was 1 paragraph stating that medical school students put more stress on this aspect of their application than is necessary-not helpful. In the end, now that my interviews are over, I realize that this book is useless for applying to residency programs. There is much more current and apropos information on the internet or through your school's administration. Luckily, I was able to return it for a full refund.

Don't get suckered into spending another $50 on useless books in med school just because they say you need it!

  5. If you've done your googling and asked around you should know about the same amount of material as what is in this book. I read through it and nothing was new information. Common sense stuff really. Don't waste your money.

2 comments about Thompson & Thompson Genetics in Medicine: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (GENETICS IN MEDICINE).
  1. This is a quite comprehensive and general overview of medical genetics, with perhaps more focus on scientific research than clinical practice, although both are well represented.

However, this is a rapidly changing field of research, and some of the newest techniques (such as whole genome association studies) and most informative websites (such as SNPedia) that are insufficiently addressed in this edition will presumably get caught only in the (hopefully frequent) future editions.

  2. This is a great study guide for the American Board of Medical Genetics exam. It covers cytogenetics and molecular genetics in depth, and also discusses other important concepts such as Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium, Population Genetics, Genomics, and single gene and complex inheritance.
I have not used the on-line access feature yet, but I have noticed a lot of improvements from the previous printed edition, including reorganized chapters, new/updated end-of-chapter questions, new statistics based on a more updated human gene count/information, and new sections on array comparative genomic hybridization. Overall, it would be essential to own this book if you're studying for the ABMG board exam, although I would also recommend supplementing your studies with other resouces to be more comprehensively prepared.
