4 comments about Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical Surgical Nursing, North American Edition: In Two Volumes (Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing).
- I was very happy with the condition of the book and timely fashion in which it arrived.
- good book, however the cd was not very helpful, if you set up by chapters or by body systems i would be able to just get to the point w/o wasting time
thanks
- It's a 2-volume textbook, required for a course - what can I say? Comes with very difficult-to-use CDs, which are neither self-explanatory nor intuitive to figure out, and so I haven't used them yet.
- This book is required for the course, and I am glad it came in two large volumes instead of one HUGE volume like some of my friends got. It's a back breaker either way

5 comments about Learning Act: An Acceptance & Commitment Therapy Skills-Training Manual for Therapists (Context / Nhp Context / Nhp).
- As a long time behavior analyst, I have been gratified to see the field move along a path toward an interesting convergence with (the tags suggested for this review). The way behavior analysis moved from "mindless" to "mindful" is due to the rigorous language training that has always been part of the training. (Remember when you were "a very new to the field undergraduate", invited to the faculty party with the graduate students & professors; how careful you were not to say something that would suggest you were still blinded by cognitivism. The upperclass undergraduates were the most brutally observant of a "slip" of the tongue that could undercut your credibilty.) As obviously dysfunctional as this small part of the method was; the training in behavior analysis, honed a precision in language that created the precision of understanding that is the common background of "a behavior analyst". All this jabber to get to my point, will we create ACT therapists without the understanding to advance the field. (typed on the fly using my iPhone - so I hope this makes sense.)
- Folks, I just have to rave about the newly released 'Learning ACT' by Jay Luoma, Steve Hayes, & Robyn Walser. It is brilliant! It makes ACT much more accessible and easier to understand, and that's an understatement. This book is an incredibly comprehensive and clear guide to using ACT - goes through each process bit by bit - breaks it up, explains it, gives examples, then gives you exercises to do to see how well you understand it and can apply it, and then gives you the answers so you can see how well you did. Wow! Wish this had been around a few years ago - would have saved me a lot of brain-ache. Essentila reading for anyone interested in practising ACT.
Cheers, Russ
- This book is a great addition to the original ACT text (Hayes, Strosahl & Wilson) - it helps bridge theory to practice in the comfort of your own home. The breakdown of the chapters and the accompanying CD allow you to consider theory and then to actually see what it looks like live. I also loved the clips that showed a mixture of interventions & help discriminate between ACT consistent and inconsistent or mixed interventions.
There is simply no substitute for "actually seeing" what it is like when various points of the model are applied. It brings a small piece of experiential training into your home and available at your beck & call. An invaluable resource for clinicians and students alike.
- In recent years several good books have been published on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), written from different angles and with different clinical populations in focus. This one, by three experts on the topic, is more than just another one. This is a tool for practice. The basic principles of ACT are presented and how to apply them in therapy is illustrated. I especially like the transcripts of therapy sessions and how they are used for practical excercises for the reader. "How would you respond, given this communication from a client?" Different suggestions are discussed from an ACT perspective.
This is a book primarely for the reader who have some knowledge of ACT and some experience of trying to implement it in her/his own work, and who wants to improve what the authors call the core competencies of ACT. There is much in this volume to take to heart, even for the experienced therapist.

5 comments about Art Therapy Sourcebook (Sourcebooks).
- Usually these types of books are theoritical (for example why art therapy works) while this one is practical with many activities to work with.
- This is an informative book for Art Therapists or those interested in learning more about Art Therapy. It is written in a easy, readable manner. I am an Art Therapist and I used it a lot when doing research for a presentation and found it very helpful.
- An excellent primer for a psychotherapist who uses art for evaluation and treatment in psychotherapy.
- The book is incredible introduction to art therapy.
I am personally writing my thesis on art therapy and it has proven an invaluable resource.
Great read and quite informative

5 comments about Clinical Anesthesiology, 4th Edition.
- It is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.
My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well.
- I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.
- I have to agree with the other 5 star writers. Pound for pound (makes a difference in your backpack) this book is hard to beat. I find it more complete than Secrets of Anesthesia, and more user friendly than Miller. If you want to learn 100 ways to not do something, and read conflicting studies then go for Miller, otherwise "M & M" is king. Besides, I challenge anyone to bring Barash or Miller into the OR with them for a quick reference...
- I will be starting school this fall, and found this book to be a great introduction. It is easy to read, and the highlights and charts made memorization easy. It was easier to read then Baby Barash, as a beginner.
- My primary source for the ABA exam. I passed the 8/05/08 exam!!! A great source. Read it three times before the exam and if you understand the information you will pass the exam. The regional section was particularly helpful.

5 comments about Textbook of Medical Physiology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access (Textbook of Medical Physiology).
- This book is simply amazing and the classic text on physiology. There were so many times in medical school and even now in residency when I was totally confused and clueless about some topic....when I used this book to read up on it, all the facts became crystal clear and easy to understand. Bottom line: GREAT book, highly recommend for med school and beyond!!!!
- If you need a thorough or even basic understanding of physiology, this book is great. It is extremely well written and 99% of it makes sense on the first read-through. My professor keeps saying how great this book, and i completely agree with her.
- The book is a nice introduction to the physiological systems in the human body, and gives a detailed description for a lot of physiological conditions pertaining to the different systems. It is very informative, and precise.
- The book is a good reference, have not actually used it too much for studying yet. Amazon completely let me down in shipping how ever, it took nearly 2 weeks to get the book, that was shipping from North St. Louis County to West County.
- Good detailed explanations. I wish there were more explanatory diagrams, tho. I will keep this text even after the class - good reference

5 comments about Understanding the Borderline Mother: Helping Her Children Transcend the Intense, Unpredictable, and Volatile Relationship.
- I thought this book was very helpful and informative. It made me feel less alone, though it brought up a lot of emotions. I have a borderline mother and I myself was hospitalized for it. After 6 years of therapy and three hospitalizations I felt I had completely found my way out and gotten better. Though I had done a lot of work I realized when reading this book how much more work I can and should do. It also helps me understand and sympathize with my mother and her intense personality much better. Or at least it's starting to. I highly recommend it.
- This book was very informative. It describes four profiles of borderline mothers and how their behaviors can impact their children. It provides suggestions for how children can deal with their mothers and try to have the best possible relationship and stay healthy.
- I had read everything I could on borderline personality disorder to try and understand my daughter-in-law. It wasn't until I read Dr. Lawson's book that I truly understood the depth of this disorder. She describes BPD as the mother relates to her children. I thought the book too expensive and almost didn't buy it, but if you read anything at all you should read this one. It should be required reading before ever getting married and certainly anyone trying to help their kids through the borderline crisis.
- very helpful and easy to read. I liked how they categorized different types of borderline traits (waif, witch, etc.). It was also nice that the author pointed out that a person who has BPD doesn't necessarily fit into a specific category- they can have different traits from various categories. It also gives a perspective on how it effects children raised by mothers diagnosed with BPD.
- My bro, sis and I have all read this book. Our childhood was like growing up in a psyche ward--except that one of the patients was the warden. I'm 42 years old and I have 2 recurring nightmares--one of which is that I am forced to live with my parents again. I spend the whole time trying to escape from them (literally). Mum's beyond help, but this book has helped us siblings greatly as we try to sort thru the fallout of it all (and try to salvage a relationship with our father). This book also deals with the guys who marry these women.
If you're going to buy only one book on BP disorders in mums, this is it.

5 comments about Never Shower in a Thunderstorm: Surprising Facts and Misleading Myths About Our Health and the World We Live In.
- This book was great fun to read. Many myths, legends, sayings, old wives' tales, etc., all related in some way to health and life, are either debunked or confirmed - and rationales are provided. The author appears to have researched each topic quite exhaustively - not only through reviewing published papers in the scientific and medical literature but also through interviewing acknowledged experts in each field. The book's writing style is friendly, authoritative and very engaging. But what stands out the most is the author's clever wit and humor; on several occasions I found myself laughing out loud. This is a wonderful book that could be enjoyed by anyone, especially those who have ever pondered the veracity of what may or may not be a bit of misinformation.
- "Wait half and hour after eating before swimming."
"Cover your head in the winter so you don't catch a cold."
"Cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis."
We've all heard the old wives tales, but which ones are really true? Based on his New York Times column, "Really?," Anahad O'Connor sets out to tell us just that.
In an easy-to-read question and answer format, Never Shower in a Thunderstorm analyzes dozens of commonly held beliefs about health. Some are verified and some are debunked, though which is which may really surprise you. Fully supported by current research and interviews with field experts, O'Connor takes a neutral middle ground, being neither too liberal and "new age-y" nor conservative and cynical in his assessments. His conversational writing style is clever and engaging, as if talking with a witty friend over a coffee or beer. References to current pop culture keep the tone light and entertaining. Several of his answers actually caused me to laugh out loud and read sections to friends.
My only wish would be to have included a bibliography or footnotes for those interested a bit more in the science behind the answers. So many of the research articles O'Connor refers to sounded interesting enough to have warranted reading them firsthand.
Overall, Never Shower in a Thunderstorm is a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read for all folks, not just those with a scientific bent.
Armchair Interviews says: True or false? This book will tell you.
- About: Facts and myths about health explained. Includes such topics as "Is too much sleep bad for you?" (yes) and "Can you swim right after eating?" (also, yes)
Pros: Quick read, interesting.
Cons: Sources are not cited, a large downside when debunking myths or providing facts.
Grade: B
- I bought this book to entertain me for a trans-pacific flight, and boy was I disappointed. Most of the questions are answered along the lines of: "Maybe, but it can't hurt to [blah]..."
Nothing is really backed up, and you're just supposed to trust the author. At some point in the book, it was talking about hair loss caused by tight hair styles. And it made the statement of Andre Agassi wearing hats all the time and then suddenly he was bald. So the hats must have caused him to lose his hair. Uh, maybe he wore hats because he had thinning hair?
I was not happy with this purchase at all.
- Lots and lots of good tips. It was so interesting that I read the whole thing in one sitting then passed it along to my kids.

5 comments about The Merck Veterinary Manual.
- Book is in good condition and really fast in delivery. Amazing Amazon ! Tons of better than E-Bay...
- The Merck Veterinary Manual is a very good first hand explanation about basically every disease or disorder your animal may get. The down side for us non-veterinarians is that it is written for veterinarians so you may have to look up a lot of scientific terms and Latin names for bacteria ... You also have to know the diagnosis because you need the name of the disease or disorder to be able to find it in this book (you would have to know it by heart to be able to "diagnose" the problem yourself. But at the end of the book short - some pages long - descriptions and useful information for all kinds "domestic" animals is added so you may also find some basic information how to handle your "pet" very quickly.
- This book is meant for professionals working with many different types of animals. It contains a wealth of information which, although I am simply a dog owner, I have used in caring for my pets. However, a book meant for lay people that is easier to read and use might have been a wiser choice for me.
- Packed with valuable up-to-date information. However, the section on prescription and treatment has been missing.
- This is the reference guide that most every veterinarian has on his or her bookshelf. It includes vital basic information regarding the health for a number of species. My practice is limited to small animal internal medicine, so it sure is nice to have this book handy when I need to look something up pertaining to my goats or horses. This book has been a consistent seller for decades- that alone is evidence of its usefulness.

5 comments about The Cure for All Cancers: Including over 100 Case Histories of Persons Cured.
- I thought this was generally a good book because it draws more attention to the fact the organized medicine is entirely different than it appears to be. Cancer cures are not what they are searching for, they are searching for new ways to make even greater fortunes on cancer treatments. Do a google search on the use of proton therapy for cancer and you'll see what I mean. It's very expensive and it hasn't proven to be any better than chemo or radiation (both of which take a horrible toll on the patient's immune system), yet these devices are being built around the country right now.
Our environment is being heavily polluted by a smorgasbord of toxic chemicals not only in the air and water, but in our food. If you don't think that can have a severe effect on your health, think again.
Numerous cures for cancer have already been discovered and effectively suppressed. Take the discoveries of Davis and Rawls, for example. Albert Roy Davis and Walter Rawls found through many years of research that North pole magnetic fields were extremely effective in halting the growth of cancer while strengthening the tissue surrounding the cancer, minimizing the chances of the cancer spreading. South pole magnetic fields had the opposite effect. They increased the growth of cancer in the body. There's your scientific evidence for whether or not power lines can affect the growth of cancer. South pole magnetic fields do increase the growth of cancer, and power lines are one of many sources of South pole magnetic exposure in our environment. Your telephone is another. Davis and Rawls wrote some great books that I highly recommend reading.
My best advice to anyone with cancer would be to do lots and lots of research on alternatives to conventional medicine, and use a combination of them. Aloe Vera is another one to look into. What it can do for the body is truly amazing. Yep, it's superb for much more than just sunburn. Plus, it can be grown almost anywhere on earth, indoors or outdoors.
When we hear the word brainwash we think of cults, not colleges. However, that is exactly what is happening in our education system. Students are being brainwashed to believe certain things and to disbelieve other things, namely anything that isn't taught in college. Well guess who took over the colleges many years ago - among others, the Rockefellers. Read the book, "Dumbing Us Down", written by a winner of the New York State "Teacher of the Year" award, John Gatto.
- On p497, she instructs readers to build their own electric "Zapper" using 9 volt batteries.
She claims that zapping yourself with this device
"kills large and small invaders: flukes, roundworms, mites, bacteria, viruses and fungi. It kills them all at once, in 7 minutes, even at 5 volts... Viruses and bacteria disappear in 3 minutes;" She does warn that you should not zap yourself with this if you are pregnant. She also fails to mention any scientific literature or clinical studies to backup any of her ridiculous claims. This is only ONE of many dangerous nonsense "treatments" in her book. She is obviously trying to make $ off of desperate people; very sickening. I got this book as a gift from a goodwilled but poorly informed person, to pass on to a friend who has breast cancer, so I got to review it before handing to her.
- A relative asked me to order this book for her.
I read a little about it and came to the conclusion that the only possible help this book could give would be a placebo effect. I ordered it thinking a placebo effect is better than nothing.
I'm rating this book 1 because the things it suggests are totally bizarre and strange, even my hopeful relative found it a bit too extreme and unhelpful (and you should have seen some of the stuff she was trying).
I don't think my relative was doing all the things the book said to, so I can't scientifically say that it doesn't work. I really do believe that there is nothing more than placebo effect involved here, and it makes me angry that people are making money from this.
- I've read this book and her other "Cure for All Diseases". These books are weird and have no real scientific basis. She blames almost every single disease on parasitic liver flukes. While some may have parasites, I beg to differ if all sick people are infested as she claims. When it comes to diseases and cancer, you have to look into other areas of a person's life like the air they breathe, genetics, diet and general predisposition. She recommends using this wierd synchrometer that you can make yourself using a shoe box and electronics from Radio Shack to "zap" bugs and parasites. This meter does absolutely nothing but burn the skin, creates scar tissue thereby making it tough. If by chance you do have parasites, you may do better with some herbs or just seeing a doctor who specializes in this. I have a hard time believing this woman. She has 'quack' written all over everything she says and does. She used to have an online store and I purchased some bathing soap and deodarant from her. Neither worked. I was walking around smelling sweaty and musty. She also recommended using Mule Team Borax as a shampoo! Well I tried that and not only was my hair so tangled and messy but by the time I realized I'd been duped, I had so much dandruff caked in my head, I'm surprised I didn't lose any hair. My advice to others would be to go with your gut. If it sounds too good to be true, watch out. But don't be so gullible as to learn the hard way and be out of thousands of dollars or have your condition worsened.
- I do not have cancer but am very interested in alternative health and natural healing. This book is very interesting, the explanations in it make alot of sense and it is an easy read. I also feel that if the average processed food eater adopted just a few of the suggestions the author makes it would greatly impact anyone's health. It's definitely worth the price, especially if you buy it used, and worth the time it takes to read it.
