5 comments about Essentials of Pathophysiology: Concepts of Altered Health States (Point (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)).
  1. This book gives you a good introduction to pathophysiology without being very technical. Even if you are not a medical professional, you will still grasp the concepts because the author gives simple but adequate definition of the disease and its underlying causes. I am a career switcher (switched to RN) and this book worked for me.

  2. Extremely well written, well edited. Also includes the basic physiology so don't feel intimidated if you're not fresh on that. Well organized. Covers all aspects, such as normal versus "abnormal", pathogenesis, sequelae, pharmacology, etc. In short, it's very complete. Yet very readable. Of all my nursing and biology books, this is one of my favorites.

  3. This is a very well written book for a Pre- Medical student who has taken two serious chemestry courses, anatomy, physiology, biology, physics, and biochemistry. For a nursing student like my self this book is understandable, bur not at all practical for our needs. I suggest using a text book that emphasizes less the detailed occurance of bodily disease, but instead gives a basic understanding of the most common disease, the ramifactaions, interventions, and complications as it deals with nursing practice in real life terms. A doctor will need to understand full the processes in this book. But for a RN a more practical book is suggestable.

  4. This book is very detailed and great for papers or just for learning.
This is a book I will be keeping:)

  5. I bought this book for a critical care med surg class and found it very helpful.

5 comments about BRS Physiology (Board Review Series).
  1. This book is an excellent resource to supplement boards study. I have been very pleased.

  2. I think this is the best BRS there is. I used this book for course exam prep as well as board review. It is a great tool to highlight important concepts, and it explains things in a simple and effective way with the right amount of information.

  3. This book is an amazing tool for my Medical School Physiology class, it will be a vital piece of my USMLE study regimen.

  4. The book had a lot of concepts that really helped with my learning of physio throughout the course and later with prepping for the physio shelf exam. My only beef with the content was with the impertinent discussions of molecular similarities between some hormones, but overall, I was pretty satisfied with the book.

  5. This book is awesome, but I can still criticize it. I read it along with the little Guyton book, and used it as a main source a couple of days before the NBME, which we took at the end of our physiology class in medical school. I read the entire book in two days, and understood it all! It is a fast dirty way to study physiology that hits all the necessary points. However, it has its down points. The book is in bullet point format all the time. It became a little degrading to see point after point, which is why I used the pocket Guyton book. Guytons pocket book is another source that I highly recommend because it explains rather than bullet points, and if the bullet points in this book become too much for you, try pocket Guyton. Also, the sections of this book may not follow your class lecture. It can be unpleasant to search for what your studying. If the book had sections smaller than 30 pages it would help. Another word of warning, this book is build for medical school. This book is not intended as a source for PhD work, etc. However, if you are in med school, this is a necessary evil!

  1. I read this for an undergraduate nursing class and found it to be a thorough text with accessible language, featuring authors who are seminal to the field. I would recommend it to other students and teachers.

  2. I needed this book for Excelsior College nursing test. This book was very informative and had an easy style to read. I just needed the book for the Epidemiology and Environmental Health chapters but I ended up using parts of the book to review for the whole Community-Focused test.

  3. The book was received in very good shape and in a very timely fashion. Thank you

  1. Please be aware that this was bought by error and was immediately returned. I have emailed amazon and was toldI would receive a refund. I love dealing with amazon, so I hope I get the refund soon. I need other books but I am waiting for the refund to purchase them. Thank you

  2. I received everything I thought I would receive with the content of this product. Very pleased with the product and delivery.

  3. If you are a nursing student this is a must have book. It includes dosage calculations and other important nursing math. Great to have if you are a beginner or if your math needs refreshing.

  4. I bought this book to help me prepare for Nursing and the calculations I would need to be able to do next semester. I found this text to be very helpful. It breaks down math into simple steps and provides adequate opportunities to practice new skills.

  5. It's fairly easy to follow along and learn on your own with this book. That's good considering we had to do that for our class. The instructors never taught anything to us, we had to do chapters on our own and turn in the work, then take a test on it. Thankfully it was very descriptive and gave many examples so it was easier to follow and do on my own.

5 comments about Kinesiology of the Musculoskeletal System.
  1. The book was received within about 5 days and it was in excellent condition. I was very satisfied

  2. This was a text in my master's program, I now work developing education programs for personal trainers and use Neumann's book as a prime reference. The author does an excellent job of describing how muscles function in vertical, upright movements as opposed to how they are often described from a horizontal, supine position on a table. This book is a must-have reference for any fitness professional interested in understand human movement as it relates to the environment

  3. This text has great illustrations, but some of the writing is more simple than could be expected for doctoral students.

  4. Useful book for PTs, not for LMTs. Book full of information if you like to know more about Kinesiology beyond massage school material

  5. This book had many details that will help establish one's foundation of kinesiology. It is more advanced but is necessary for a graduate level course.

  1. I got the book in 3 business days in brand new condition, thank you. The only thing that I have noticed after getting my purchase and comparing it to my other class mate's books that the human skeleton atlas was missing. But that's OK, now. Otherwise as always, Amazon delivers!

  2. i didn't like the lab manual too much.. but anyone who is trying to buy this.. LOOK UP THE 8th ED.!! almost the same thing for less
    ISBN # 0-8053-7249-0

  3. Thank you, I recieved my book quick and in excellent conditions with any extras that came with it.

1 comments about The Best Practice: How the New Quality Movement is Transforming Medicine.
  1. This is my favorite example of a visionary solution since reading How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of "Intangibles" in Business by Hubbard. Kenney's work would have been a great example for Hubbard and Hubbard's methods would have solved many of the challenges of Donald Berwick and Paul Batalden, the heroes of The Best Practice.

Whether the average patient can tell it or not, the quality of health care is improving measurably thanks largely to a passionate devotion of Berwick and Batalden to their cause. The biggest surprise for me in the book is how even a culture as entrenched as medicine can start to change its ways when quality becomes a quantity that is measured and used as a yardstick for improvement. Champions of the quality control methods W.E. Demming developed for other businesses, Berwick and Batalden decide to implement standards of quality already known in other professions to perhaps the profession perhaps most resistant to objective measurement. And we are all better off for it.

5 comments about Concise Rules Of Apa Style (Concise Rules of the American Psychological Association (APA) Style).
  1. good reference for research papers, only wished it had better examples easier to locate instead of having to read every chapter to search for format.

  2. I thought this would be a more helpful book than the APA Publication Manual, but I was wrong. This small volume does not cover enough items that I need to write a graduate level paper. I suggest purchasing only the Publication Manual.

  3. This book is a little confusing. Never arrived when ordered first. I had to reorder this item which finally arrived two months late.

  4. This is an essential book if you're preparing papers that must follow APA style. It's official from APA, so you can count on the content. More detailed than a quick guide. The spiral binding makes it easy to use. If my 'easy way' guide doesn't have the answer, this concise guide does. Wouldn't be without it. Why didn't my uni profs tell me about this cheaper resource??? (The full-length guide costs about twice as much, if I remember correctly.)

  5. Let's face it, nobody likes doing APA, but if you have to do it, this is the best tool around. It is portable and easily searched and covers all situations, no matter how archiaic.

5 comments about 21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox.
  1. So far on the program about a week and have lost about 9 pounds, I am not going to lie and tell you this diet/detox is easy, but it does work. I had my first colonic today and I didn't care for it very much and skeptical about getting another one, but on a good note I have had a little more energy, finally getting my cleaning caught up, and the pounds are shedding away fast. The book is very informative, full of information on healthy living and modern up to date scientific facts. I definitely recommend the asian spinach soup recipe that is found at the end of the book. It is very flavorful, even if you are not on a detox this is still very tasty. Also you can drink as much of your favorite tea (non caffienated) as you want which has been really nice. The hunger pangs have been hard during the first few days, even though the book claims that you won't feel hungry. I have felt a little less hungry towards the end of the week. A lot of the people that gave it bad reviews have never tried it so I wouldn't let their negativity effect your judgement in trying out the plan. So far it's been alot of fun, and I hope to see more results as I continue.

  2. First, I'm not a dieter.
    Second, I don't do diets!!

I didn't do this just for the weightloss. I wanted to do this to feel better. Today is my 21st day of the detox and tomorrow I start the break.

My wife and I decided on this program after much research. We read both the posoitive and the negative. Having read a large portion of the reviews here, I found it odd how evenly split they were. Those that panned this program all had a common theme, they all wanted this quick easy weightloss program and didn't really see what this program is really about; detoxifying your body and feeling better. Remember, weight loss is a side benefit of this program and should not be the main reason you do this.

Yes, the program was tough at time. My healing crisis lasted over two days, but I got through it. The one thing (of many)that I learned is this: Our association and fixation on food and eating is over 95% mental and that's the hardest thing to overcome. While following the nutritional guidance, physically, I was never hungry, but mentally, I missed eating and chewing but I really wasn's hungry. Once you get past that, the rest is easy. I'm happy to report that as of today, I have lost 26 lbs and my wife 25 lbs. I still have some more weight to lose, but I feel great and I'm ready to start eating with a different perspective and pay much more attention to what I put in my body.

This program may not be for everyone, but if you can maintain you dedication and remember why you're doing it in the first place, you can do it. As for the colonics, when you see what you have hiding in your colon, just sitting there rotting, then you'll have a whole new appreciation for how colon cancer develops. If you skip that and the enemas, your missing out on a major component of this program.

  3. The book was good. However, not many people I know could stay on this for 21 days.

  4. I agree with K Copper in the fact that I do what I can, I did find a "green drink" at a health food store and it had the green & berry flavor, trying it alone I could hardly choke it down but now I mix it with crystal lite green tea & raspberry flavored on the go packet, it taste much better, & I also found in the natural section by pacific, a veggie low sodium broth for my soup, I so far have been doing it for 3 days and I lost 4.5 pounds, I feel so much better, you do what you can do.

  5. INformation packed book makes you take a closer look at what you are eating....have not begun the process...very complicated...

5 comments about Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 17th Edition (Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine).
  1. I got a phone call from my brother from India and he asked me to check if 17th edition was available in the USA and I told him YES. He was in euphoria and asked me to purchase and send it to him :) He is working on his MD right now. So we discussed for a few minutes what this book entails and why he thought it was a such a great and the best book on internal medicine and he was pretty descriptive in pointing out differences between this and other books out there so I was pretty convinced at the end of our conversation that it is indeed the bible of internal medicine. And the best part, Amazon shipped this 12 lbs book for just $9.95 to India. Had I purchased this somewhere else and shipped it myself via USPS, I would have spent at least $50-70 on shipping alone. So I am glad that Amazon saved me few bucks there. Thanks Amazon. Keep it up.

  2. it is wonderful book except its papers type , it is very delicate and can be easily cutted

  3. I ordered this text on 5/18/08. Today is 6/19/08. WOuld love to review it if I had received it... still waiting.

  4. Well, I belive that it's a bit overcomplicated. I've got the 14th edition and it is more practical. The 17th has way to many unnecesary charts, tables, however they took out a lot of important tables, guidelines wich were important. Some chapters are reduced 50% (eg. pneumonias)......I am a bit dissapointed i was expecting more.

  5. This is an exceptional book. The level of coverage on any given topic is often 'the final authority' when other books don't have the answers.

I have a considerably older version of this book circa 1978 or so and decided to update my resources for a recertification exam. While this served as an excellent reference, I did find the information cumbersome to find, with the extensive index often directing me to a single instance of the item I was searching for as part of the label of a photograph (with no particularly useful information in the photograph), for instance, sometimes requiring me to look up 10 different points and reference the pdfs on the DVD to find an answer. In short the referencing system in the index left me wasting a lot of time to find information that was a bit scatterred. This tended to make me use the book as a last resort rather than a first choice.

The book is such a masterpiece of medical knowledge that giving it less than 5 stars would be unthinkable to me, but it could still be improved upon. One suggestion might be an index added to the DVD with a sophisticated search mechanism with some annotations or excerpts giving a preview of where the 'bulk' of information might be found. The quality of the information is exceptional throughout the text.
