2 comments about Jacobians of Matrix Transformation and Functions of Matrix Argument.
  1. A Jacobian is the derivative of a square matrix, as undergraduates in maths and science learn in a course on multivariable calculus. But suppose you're majoring in science or engineering, and wish to learn more. The book is useful in this regard. Especially in any field that involves applications of linear algebra, like electrical circuits or control systems. Actually, in all of engineering and the physical sciences, at the very least.

The level of treatment in the book is accessible to a non-math student. Mathai tries to show common methods or patterns by which you can apply Jacobians. Examples are shown across physics, biology, statistics and engineering. The book has a pragmatic treatment of the rigour in its theorems. Enough is given to satisfy most readers.

Also very useful are the problem sets in each chapter. Good mental workout. You are urged to try these.

  2. easy to read for engineering student like me.

    useful contents for communications engineering.

1 comments about Introduction to Matrices and Vectors.
  1. Just a quick review to warn people like me who buy books like these to help us in our autodidact pursuits. I bought this Dover book because I trusted Dover publications and am now disappointed to say that this trust is now in question. The book has some merit: the flow and examples are clear and well laid out however, THERE ARE NO SOLUTIONS TO THE EXERCISES!
Be aware that there are some glaring mistakes even to the beginner's eyes. For example, the author says "We may determine a 4X4 matrix..." and then represents this 4x4 with a 5x5 matrix. And he contradicts a commutivity theorem by saying that where two matrices A and zero share the same nxn row & column dimensions An+0n=A and then right after this he says A+0=0 on pp. 12-13. This is wrong! How am I supposed to trust further examples from this book? Sorry, I'll have to permanently shelve it...
    Good luck.

1 comments about Computational Methods for General Sparse Matrices (Mathematics and Its Applications).
  1. The book gives good insights about choosing particular methods. The author shows many tables comparing different strategies and matrices. The reader doesn't need to have background on sparse matrices. It is really a `cookbook' on sparse matrix solutions.
