1. As a physical chemist/spectroscopist by training who suddenly found myself needing to synthesize & characterize some model compounds for my experiments, I found this book and its companion ("Advanced Practical Organic Chemistry") to be a very helpful review of modern synthetic techniques, particularly in regards to dealing with air-sensitive compounds. Definitely a recommended reference for any chemist. I feel I should stress, however, that this volume treats synthetic techniques rather broadly, without dealing with the synthesis of any particular molecule, though Chapter 13 provides references for the synthesis of many starting materials.

4 comments about Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry.

1. The text is filled with tons of info, yet written so that almost anyone can understand. This text is excellent for an intro course in inorganic or a first year undergraduate chemistry/biochemistry program. However, what it lacks in depth it gains for in it's user friendlyness. A must for students who don't plan on doing any adavnced inorganic chemistry.



2. In my opinion, this text is vastly inferior to something like the, often used, inorganic text by Rogers. The text did not seem logically composed, and the questions often seem to have little to do with the chapter at hand thus requiring copious back and forth between other diverse chapters. In a nutshell, the book is simply badly organized. If this were not bad enough, even in the fourth addition, typos are not that uncommon in both the book and its thin, yet expensive, solutions manual.



3. This is a very informative and readable introductory text to inorganic chemistry, and a good choice for those not needing a full semester of coordination, organometallic or solid state inorganic chemistry. We've used this and previous editions for several years for our sophomore-level course, which students pursuing a B.A. degree are required to take (it is also an elective for chemistry minors). This textbook is not comprehensive as "Cotton & Wilkinson" or "Greenwood & Earnshaw" and is probably not suitable for an Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course, which is the one our B.S. chemistry majors take. Overall, we're very satisfied with this textbook.



4. Decent chemistry book. Not terribly well written or that in depth. I bought it for a class, but probably would not buy it for "general reference." Completely black and white, no color.

2 comments about The f Elements (Oxford Chemistry Primers, 76).

1. Scott and Kaltsoyannis have done a really fine job of preparing an entry-level textbook which deals with the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. It is written at a level suitable for advanced undergraduate and upward, and the authors are to be commended for their clear and concise explanations of some difficult concepts. This is a highly readable text that should be recommended to anyone wishing to obtain an overall picture of the physical and chemical trends within this often-neglected group of elements.



2. Too many treatments of the lanthanides ends up with lists of data or a main focus on spin mulitiplisities and terms. I'm not sure how many there are that understands the last topic, and can apply it to anything. This book take a broader and more coherent view of the chemistry of the f-group. Many parts are eminent. And the only I could wish more of would a be some few extra sentences about the molecule orbitals in the actinide complexes, ...just to make it even smoother to read.
