5 comments about The Gun Digest Book of the Glock, 2nd Edition.
  1. My review on this one is going to be a bit more critical than most. This is probably one of the worst books on Glock pistols that I have read to date. The author is constantly comparing Glocks to 1911's, and other types of pistols. The book is also loaded with plenty of non-Glock images. Mr. Sweeney, I bought this book because I like the Glock, not because I wanted to see plenty of photos of 1911's... ad nauseam. Perhaps Mr. Sweeney should stick to books writing books like his "Gun Digest Book of the 1911", as he has done Glock more than a bit of injustice.

You know, I recently purchased Massad Ayoob's excellent book "The Gun Digest Book of Sig-Sauer". Mr. Sweeney, please take note... Massad's book on the Sig is FILLED with useful information and photos related to his book's title... SIG-SAUER PISTOLS!

Sorry, but I must recommend a pass on Sweeney's "sort of Glock" book!

    Hans

  2. Pat Sweeney writes the best overall book for the firearms industry. His attention to detail and articulation is some of the best work when it comes to general firearms knowledge. The only other book that covers the Glock this well is the Ptooma Guide to the Glock. This book in comparison to the Ptooma book, well that is kind of hard. Sweeney writes as a general knowledge book, while the Ptooma book was written by guys that LOVE Glocks. Sweeney is a 1911 and revolver man, But who wouldn't trust the word of someone that took 3rd place in World Shoot XIV in Standard Revolver? I think he knows what he is talking about. You need a Glock book? Look no further. You found it.

  3. I have read all the books available for the Glock line of pistols and this one is easily the best. The author covers history, maintenance, all the models, and the pictures are excellent.

If you are going to buy just one book about Glocks I highly recommend this be the one, it IS that good.

But beware; if you are not presently a Glock owner you may find, after spending time with this book, that you just have to have one.

  4. I couldn't top the the 3 previous reviews, they were accurate. I have the revised 2003 book which retails for $27.99 and I bought it at a local gun shop for $25.20. I wish I had checked Amazon's prices first.

  5. Previous reviews appear to be concerned with the first edition of this book. Despite this, the criticisms presented by those reviews are valid for the second edition. A significant portion of the book concerns the 1911 Government Model in its various incarnations. While I can appreciate the comparisons between the Glock and the 1911--I also have a fondness for the 1911--there really is too much time spent in this area. Another point to make is how much of the book is devoted to various competitions. Many books concerning firearms tend to lean heavily toward promoting shooting competitions. Nothing wrong with this if that is your interest, however, if competition sports is not your particular interest (it's not mine), another significant portion of this book will be wasted on you.

Glocks are simple, straightforward firearms that don't allow for much in the way of modification or gunsmithing improvements. If you write a book about them, I suppose you have to digress into other areas of general firearms interests. Otherwise, the book would be rather short. There's not much you can say after saying that Glocks work great right out of the box, seldom stop working no matter how they are abused, generally are easy to shoot well with minimum training and they have been a phenomenon in their acceptance by shooters worldwide. Oh, yeah...you could say they are kind of ugly. That's about the only real criticism you can come up with for the Glock.

I like the book although I admit that I did skip over some sections and I only skimmed through others.

5 comments about Ace the IT Interview (Ace the It Job Interview).
  1. The book is very helpful for IT professionals seeking a job. Different positions in the IT field were discussed along with potential questions you might get asked during an interview. The author also provides advices that are critical to job hunting. I highly recommend this book.

  2. a really good book for college undergrads and grads to get an insight into interviews from beginning to end.
    must have for all students.

  3. This is a helpful book. I also recommend Information Technolgy Jobs in America 2008: Corporate & Government Career Guide (Information Technology Jobs in America: Corporate & Government. ITJA explains the industry as marketplace. It shows you salary charts for the IT jobs in U.S. Federal, States and Cities, and pension estimates, and how precisely to go government. Computer Jobs with the Growing Information Technology Professional Services Sector 2008 IT Staffing Firms; and Computer Jobs With the Growing Information Technology Professional Services Sector 2008: Midwest States, provide company and recruitment contacts in each U.S. region hiring for contract labor and permanent. Put the resources together and you have a powerful package.

  4. This is a good book for anyone seeking job in IT profession. Most of the topics mentioned are relavent to present day. The reader should not be 100% condidence on everything mentioned in this book. Networking with other professionals would help to reduce that risk.

  5. Great guide. My instructor uses it for our class. Easy to read and has great suggestions. Sample questions for typical IT interviews and gives hints on how to approach an interview. I recommend this book.

5 comments about Workflow Modeling: Tools for Process Improvement and Application Development.
  1. Everything started with the creation of a two days workshop: Workflow Process Modeling. The authors have continually improved the workshop with participants' feedback and ideas based on their own hands-on consulting work with many organizations. The book is very well structured and it is based on real world experience. The structure is simple with no unnecessary parts that usually fill other books with redundant content. The content is not a mere recount of personal experiences: there are plenty of references to other publications. Plus, you will find good humor in the book that makes it even more readable.

Although the authors declared their work aimed at application development work as a final outcome, the book is focused very much on the business side with emphasis on process workflow. Nowadays the specialization pushes further and further apart the role of a business analyst from the system analyst, while in the past some would refer to these roles as one. This book might not be very useful for a system analyst because it is not very technically oriented. You will not find yourself drown under zillions of diagrams created with a specific software package, but you will get instead a method of how to approach business analysis from a broad, yet practical, perspective. The book does not bother even to talk too much about UML. I found that refreshing and extremely useful. I have been searching for a book that is more like a thought provoking companion rather than a software tool manual and this book fits that description.

Workflow Modeling is a comprehensive book. It does not focus on a particular stage of business analysis. It provides an inventory of areas the professional business process consultant would have to consider and the rationale for each one of them. Some readers might not agree with the little amount of space dedicated to class modeling which is almost inexistent. On the plus side, the authors talk about approach in dealing with project stakeholders, pitfalls, team building and difficulties and what questions to ask in various situations. The authors appreciate the importance of the final delivery, how to map the road between the as-is process to to-be process and understand the structure of the organization. I found many things that were said here very realistic and valuable; I could relate them to my own experience. The book does not say much about class modeling, but it talks a lot about swimlane diagrams and use cases analysis.

You can use Workflow Modeling to design your own work template that suits your style and formation. You can come back , re-read some parts or the whole book (I have done that) and still get something out of it. I recommend the book as a good investment that will not go out of fashion very soon.

  2. I was recommended this book from BPMN Essentials course I recently took and just finished the book. It has a great deal of examples and suggestions for how to perform process modelling, which I like.

  3. I enjoyed this book because of:
    1) clear, coherent logic
    2) it's very practical from cover to cover - everything you need to know before modeling processes you can find here and use it in your work on the very next day
    3) the language - it's plain and definitely supports better adoption of the tools described. I also like the authors' delicate humor :)

As a whole - two thumbs up, 5 stars.

  4. Good overall analysis and methodology for approaching process re-design projects. Very practical and well written. Includes strategies for avoiding common pitfalls.

  5. This book is great! It is well written, easy to read, and put together in a logical manner. Everyone that has an interest in improving business processes should take the time to read the book.

For those that are new to the world of process it will be a real eye opener (and a bit of a page turner). For those that are self taught it will save you 20 years of trial and error. For those that are industry experts it serves as a great (and necessary) reminder that if you miss the big picture - your project is off track.

I attended a BPM conference in late 2006 and was amazed at how theoretical and up in the clouds many of the so called experts were. Alec is different, his approach is field tested, practical, and it works.

5 comments about Shop Drawings for Greene & Greene Furniture: 23 American Arts and Crafts Masterpieces.
  1. Having purchased two other books of this nature by Mr. Lang, I placed myself on the waiting list at Amazon and waited months the get the book in my hands. I did not hesitate to break it out of the packaging and dove right into it. The first forty-five pages were dedicated to the history and other background information necessary to get a good understanding of the Greenes' design concepts and the practical methods used by the Hall brothers to construct the pieces. I was very disappointed with the scant number of details that one might expect from such a technical manual. There are a few photographs that show some of the processes (most of us know how to use a shoulder plane) but what was lacking were drawings to reinforce or to make clear some of the principles Lang was trying to describe. The book read like a series of essays rather than a substantive, technical manual with supporting details.

The actual measured drawings are just that as they lack certain pertinent construction details. I am a fairly skilled woodworker, having started the craft at the age of fourteen and have continued until today, even after a successful career in architecture; and what I have concluded is that this book was hurriedly put together to meet some preset deadline. It is my opinion that if more time and thought was given by the author to the details it would have resulted in a much better book.

So I am sorely disappointed with the contents and the lack of detailing and would not recommend this book to anyone but very experienced woodworkers. Mr. Lang has missed the mark this time and what a pity.

  2. The two previous reviews by "experienced" craftsmen are laughable at the very least.

A book of shop drawings is that. And this one is one of the best. It is not a tome for beginners or for those who do not have the ability to infer and who do not have spatial orientation necessary to derive results from DRAWINGS.

The two previous reviewers must be very unhappy individuals to have to be led by the nose so much.

As to this book. If you truly are a woodworker, this is a fine reference work. Not only that but it also deals somewhat with the philosophy of woodworking. That is always a good touch.

  3. "Shop Drawings" is little more than it says it is. It would have been nice if it were more but it doesn't claim to be. If you have a background similar to Mr. Lang's as I do with drafting, then there is all you need to reproduce the Greene and Greene designs, at least from a dimensional stand point. You will however need to figure out the details on your own or reference some of the magazine articles on reproducing the Greene and Greene furnature. As Mr. Lang states in his book, it's not a how to guide. It's still a very good and informative book however and one you will want if you have visions of building some of this unique furnature.

  4. This book is a welcome add to the many showing the arts & crafts furniture designs. The text and drawings are first rate and guide you through the design process. The author certainly has done a complete investigation to put together this fine review of the many arts & crafts furniture era.

  5. This has to be the most beautiful book in the series of Arts & Crafts style shop drawings from Robert Lang, and I have them all. I have to say, almost every piece in this book is one where you have to decide that you are going to devote between 6 months and a year of your life to making. I have not yet made this committment, but I already see how reading this book has influenced some of the details on my other work. Gorgeous color plates of these masterpieces are included and everything is printed on archival quality glossy paper. Drawings are clear and descriptive text is concise and well written. Overall I recommend this to any student of Greene and Green (and Peter and John Hall, the craftsmen who actually built most of these pieces for them!)

5 comments about CISA Exam Cram: Certified Information Systems Auditor (Exam Cram 2).
  1. I just came from the CISA course and i really depended on this book, i did extremely well in the book's and CD's exam.
The questions, alerts and cram sheets contain similar points, that makes you believe you can do well just by going through the cram sheet.
the actual exam was extremely different, i was really lost and had to guess allot of answers.
I'm awaiting for my marks, but i don't think i will pass :(

  2. The actual test and this book are poles apart. The book, practice questions and the simulated test makes you feel like you know what you need to know for the test. But the actual test is a lot different (I would not necessarily say "difficult"), but reading this book is almost a complete waste of time.

  3. All topical based questions would have been separated from answers, it doesn't make sense to read the question while the answer is just displayed beneath.

  4. This book is an excellent read. It's an easy read and helped clarify some important concepts that the ISACA CISA manual could not. I would use this book to reinforce any terms and/or concepts one cannot grasp from the ISACA CISA manual. I passed the exam December 2007.

  5. This book is a great piece of review material for the CISA exam, but I would not use it as your only piece of study material. I would advise that one get this book as a review guide prior to taking the test as a refresher, but use one of the other books on the market to build their initial knowledge.

5 comments about Beds.
  1. An excellent book on bed construction. I built the pencil post bed that Jeff has in his book and the plans and advise were easy to follow. It came out looking great!

A good book for the beginner to the experienced woodworker. Excellent color pictures and instructions for each type of bed.

I recommend it highly to anyone who is going to think about building or commissioning a bed project.

Thanks Jeff if you read this!

  2. I am in the process of finishing up the bed shown on the cover of this book. It is the first bed and biggest project I have ever made since I have a samll shop and limited tools. It turns out beautifully that even surprises myself. Jeff Miller gives detailed instructions, design and material list that makes the project a easy task. I happen to have a mortise machine that makes the mortises for the slats much easier and nicer. Also, after I visited a local store, I easily changed dimensions of the bed to suit personal taste. I really enjoyed making this bed.

  3. This book gave me the confidence to build a bed. I chose Jeff's most basic design and it went smoothly. I would not say this book is for the complete novice however. I had oversight from an experienced woodworker. Nevertheless, Jeff is a good writer with nice pictures. And opinions. The great thing about Tauton Press books is that they get experts to share their insights and opinions that you simply do not get from people like Time-Life

The projects range in style, and they are all pleasing.

  4. The whole series of these book's (desks, bookcase, tables, beds) is a must for all woodworkers.

I built the Pencil Post Bed out of this book and will be working on another of the bed projects soon. I like the paperback style easy to read and comfortable to work with. The is a good mix of projects in these books some high end and some fairly basic, good detail on techniques and alternative constructive methods. Pictures are for the most part good. Only drawback in some places I'd like to see a bit more explanation in some places.

  5. Have gotten a few here and although I'm just doing basic projects, these books are a great resource and provide tons of helpful information

5 comments about Tactical Shotgun: The Best Techniques And Tactics For Employing The Shotgun In Personal Combat.
  1. The Bounty Hunter breakin here in Phoenix in '97 prompted me to take up the defensive shotgun. I found a local school and began the thrilling task of learning how to operate the 12 gauge pump not only as a formidable tool for things that go bump in the night, but to learn its capabilities and shortcomings (hostage rescue). Suarez' TSG addresses all the best techniques and provides much supplemental material for applying these techniques using different operating systems (Rem/Mossberg slide/pump, semi-autos).

It's all here: patterning with buckshot/shot, one/two-hand operations, slings and modes of carry, tactical and emergency reloads, indexing, loading a slug on demand, position shooting, and transitioning to sidearm/secondary weapon. The book is filled with excellent photographs which document the above techniques. Suarez' skill as a trainer clearly shows in the effectiveness of presentation.

Although I'd recommend studying the defensive shotgun in a practical setting, this book is a great way to see what should be covered in such a course. If you don't have social shotgun skills, there's no time like the present. Social unrest, home invasion, nuisance animals--do it now.

  2. Check out this guide to the defensive shotgun while you take a class on the subject. This book emphasizes all the important techniques.

  3. Gabe Suarez covers a wide range of topics: Shotgun Types, Ammunition, Accessories, Loading, Shooting Positions, Malfunctions, Close Quarters Defense, etc... It's an excellent overview of tactical shotgun shooting for those just beginning to learn and a great review for those with more advanced skills.

There are numerous illustrations, a list of resources and suggestions for further reading.

Overall a well written book that covers a lot of ground.

  4. good educational product, it enhanced my general culture, this guy really knows his stuff, great buy

  5. Gabe Suarez has written several books on shooting, and like the others, this book provides a solid introductory base to the who, what, when, where and why of employing the shotgun. Many have criticized his works because they can't get past "the basics", which he presents in each book. However, it's these "basics" that you're most likely to remember, use and be successful with. If you have his other books, you'll read through some familiar territory including the psychology of using a weapon against another human being, the risks and considerations and the common-sense practical aspects of being prepared for the time you may have to do so. Then he launches into the specialty of this book, suitable equipment (guns and accessories) and successful employment of the equipment to survive the encounter. Before you buy this book, beware, Suarez does not believe in point shooting (neither do I). If you're as stubborn as I am, only you're in the point shooting camp, don't bother with this book. Suarez is a student of Cooper and believes in using your sights. He does little to nothing to address the other point of view.
