5 comments about The Measure of Man and Woman: Human Factors in Design.
  1. There's minimal reading in this book, which is nice since it's good for reference. The reading that it does have is very simple with bulleted paragraphs full of information that you can't get from looking at the diagrams.
Great diagrams for industrial design students (I got this for one of my classes), gives you the measurements, reach, sight and motion range, pretty much any numeric info you need to know for the 1 percentile, 99 percentile, and 50 percentile man/woman.
Also has nice chart of child development w/descriptions of what the ave. child can do at each age, as well as diagrams for the elderly (and in wheelchair). This book is essential if you are going for product design or interior design.

  2. I found a handful of pages out of this book useful for space planning. Not worth fifty bucks unless you are designing equipment and products.

  3. I'm studying furniture design and this book will be extremely helpful for me. It gives tons and tons of measurements throughout the human life span. All kinds of positions, arrangements, etc. There is section on every age, even infants and elderly. It's also just an interesting thing to read, regardless of being an awesome reference book. I loved reading about how different abilities/capacities develop at certain ages. This way you can know when humans are able to do what. This can help better understand human's needs, in a physical and spatial sense.

    Great book, just get it.

  4. As a design student this is a very useful book. It makes assignments sound great when Information in this book is referenced. The drawings are very simple and easy to understand, however it is cramped full of numbers and stats (or 'data'). So u should only be buying this book if that's what u are looking for. It covers a diverse range of human factors in design like optimal reach, grip, vision length, working temperatures, noise, radiation, lighting, ect...

This is exactly what i wanted so i am extremely happy with this purchase especially since it was in high demand in my uni library.

  5. This book is an excellent resource for designing products that must accomodate various shapes and sizes of people. The charts provide a useful starting point for design. Some data, however, is quite old which dilutes it's relevancy. Also, do not purchase the instant, online access to this book. There are many dimesions and small details which can't be read due to the poor resolution of the on-screen viewer.

  1. book was in excellent condition, just as the seller specified! no torns, no highlights, no wear! arrived promptly!

  2. A very nice book, quite in depth.
Covers natural and man made fibers, types of weaves, production and fabric finishes. Many color plate examples to illustrate the information.
This book was shipped quickly by Amason at half the price I paid at the campus bookstore! Needless to say, I returned the book purchased at the campus bookstore.

  3. Well-organized and informative general reference on textiles for home or commercial use. Also has a great references section. Pictures are helpful, but I'd also recommend having a "hands-on" source in order to get a better understanding of all of the terminology and descriptions.

  4. This is not an easy reference guide, but a textbook that gives lots of information that is not needed for daily design use. It is also filled with lots of pictures which would be nice if they were really helpful, but they seem to take up a lot of space and act as fluff.

  5. Thank you very much the book arrived before I expected and in very good conditions!!!

3 comments about The Packaging and Design Templates Sourcebook (Graphic Design).
  1. I love this book. The templates are amazing, but easy enough to alter into your own design. Sometimes as a student you need a starting point. My last project turned out amazing and I believe I'll use this book as a reference for along time. I am even interested in other books by this author and Rotovision Publishing. The pictures are great and the design on the packaging a lone is worth it. This book is one of my best if not the best design books I have and more affordable. I honestly would have paid more for this book. My classmates are also looking into buying this book after they viewed my copy. I believe this is a must in a design students library. It gives you inspiration and shows you what good package design is, believe me there are some terrible books out there.

  2. This book is a must have for any graphic artist. It's beautifully executed with tons of examples to garner inspiration from. Worth every penny.

  3. Das Buch enthält viele brauchbare, alltagstaugliche Verpackungen, die leicht auf eigene Bedürfnisse angepasst werden können.

5 comments about The Unofficial LEGO Builder's Guide.
  1. My kids are young enough that the basic building schemes illustrated here are interesting to them. Some are beyond them (ages 5,6,11). They were somewhat disappointed there weren't more "models" or building plans to follow. I like it, though, because it just shows the basics then makes them use their imaginations where anything is possible. So, it's useful, but not an item I'd rave about.

  2. An Ok book, but I was hoping that the author would go into greater details.

  3. Bedford's book offers everything and anything that one could consider useful to know about building with LEGO. I love the way he describes how to design things using grids and how to organize large collections of LEGO bricks. He's even designed a game in LEGO that others can play! I highly recommend this book to all ages of LEGO builders.

  4. THE UNOFFICIAL LEGO BUILDER'S GUIDE is the best "Overview" of the LEGO building system available hands down. The book has been written for beginners as well as more advanced builders. It's a great reference guide with tips, techniques and definitions for users of all ages. Anyone can buy and build a LEGO "set", but this book will give you the tools needed to build your own creations. Once those "sets" are in a hundred pieces and you want to try your hand at your own creation, this is the guide you will reach for to help you do it right.

The chapters are written is a simple easy to understand way and the flow of the material is easy to follow. There seems to be just enough information on each page that the reader does not feel like he/she is always getting lost when following the examples or descriptions. The illustrations are in black and white and are very clear and easy to see. Some might complain that the illustrations are not in color but I personally prefer the black and white. When building your own creation the lack of color is actually less of a distraction than it would be if you were building something blue and white and the illustration was red and yellow.

One of the best features of the book is the Bricktopia, a categorized list of the most commonly used LEGO pieces. It includes an illustration of the piece, a description, size and part number. I personally find it helpful to browse thru this area to get "ideas" for building projects. I have noticed pieces I forgot about that has triggered a "thats the one I could use" thought to help with a project I am working on or have been thinking of building.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the foundations needed to build projects from simple to the more elaborate. LEGO builders of all ages will benefit from buying this book. Buy this book and leave it out on a coffee table and see how long it takes someone to pick it it up!

  5. A true labor of love, this is the most comprehensive guide around! A must-have for LEGO devotees.

5 comments about Operations Management for Competitive Advantage with Student DVD.
  1. This is a very good book required by many MBA programs. The book contains much useful information with detailed analysis and examples. The biggest problem I have with this book is the use of the word "it." I find it hard to figure out what "it" is. "Rule 3. Merge Information-Processing Work into the Real Work That Produces the Information. This means that people who collect information should also be responsible for processing it. It minimizes the need for another group to reconcile and process that information..." There are countless examples of the use of "it." In the same section (Principles of Reengineering) the authors make note that "it" refers to the actual rule 3, while in rule 4, "it" is noted as the result of the rule. The authors could have chosen an alternate phrase instead of confusing the reader with the lack vocabulary. Although, I have the problem with pronoun usage, the book is very well laid out and flows greatly from operations strategy to supply chain planning and control. The supplements that are available with the book include financial analysis tools, operations technology tools as well as sample problems.

  2. I didn't get a chance to use this book, dropped the class after I ordered it.

  3. you should get the international addition. the hard cover was too heavy to carry to all the open book exams haha.

  4. This book seems to pretty good. My instructor that had us buy it for class has decided to not really use now though. But as far as I can tell it is pretty good book if you are interested in manufacturing.

  5. Outdated edition still a bit pricey for some reason. But it is exactly what I purchased.

  1. My daughter needed this for school. Product was shipped quickly and is doing the job.

  2. Being I had done Technical Writing for so many years I still know I could learn things and this book had some great info and is a good ref to have around as a writer or as a novice.

  3. I bought the book for a technical writing class. I still use it to refresh my memory on the nuances of grammar and punctuation. I recommend it for anyone who cares about the effectiveness of their writing.

  4. Nice trade, the book is really in excellent condition, it is a very useful book for business major who has diffculties in formal writing, the only bad thing is the parcel was full of dust...

  5. The book is very handy. Not only does it serve as a good technical writing reference, but it is also a great general reference for everyday writing.

5 comments about The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book: Design, Invent, and Build.
  1. This book contains very clear instructions and diagrams for NXT-G program. The sample robots are creative and very well designed. You can feel the intelligence behind when you build. I especially like the binding of this book, so it can lay open while you build. So I will probablly purchase more book from this press. In fact I have pre-order one. One thing I doesn't like is one of the samples requires two NXT kits, which I don't have at the moment. I guess it's because this book is targeting more senior builders.

  2. 'The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book: Design, Invent, and Build' is an absolutely wonderful book with one MAJOR flaw in that the entire book is in black and white. Packed with 16 chapters written wonderfully with exciting examples and content, this would have been a easy 5 star recommendation but I simply cannot do that. Legos are bold, bright, and full of color, the decision to publish this in black and white was a terrible one. I understand this decision was made to no doubt save costs, but it shouldn't have been published (no matter how good the content is) in this form. Some books would benefit from color, some books require it and this is one of those cases. If you enjoy Legos and want to learn how to use Mindstorms NXT and all the fun, amazing things you can do with them this book will show you how, but I would wait for version 2.0 of this book with color. Not only is the black and white unfavorable, it's downright hard to follow.

Great content, great layout, thumbs WAY down for no color

    **** RECOMMENDED

  3. The LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT Idea Book: Design, Invent, and Build

I read this book and I really enjoyed it. This was the first Mindstorms book that I read and it was really easy to understand and got me off to a quick start. The only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars was that the graphics and text are printed on an off white background and it made it a little harder to read and the graphics themselves are all black and white and some of them were a little hard to figure out the robot designs because of it. But dont let this keep you from getting this great robotics book. [...]

  4. Lots Of good information on NXT G-code,Bluetooth programming for the NXT, and an informative guide to designing your NXT bots.I thought this book was well worth the money. The "LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT-G Programming Guide (Technology in Action) is a very good intro to this book.

  5. The problem with this book is it has black and white photos of black and white pieces. They don't give a close up of what your adding to your structure. Writing is too small to look at without a magnify glass.
Programming was screwed up in some places.

4 comments about Machinery's Handbook 28th Larger Print Edition (Machinery's Handbook).
  1. This book is easier on the eyes thanks to the larger print and builds bigger muscles due to its larger size! As usual this book has all the necessary info to get my mechanical engineering design tasks complete only it's improved.

  2. The product is certainly comprehensive and reasonably well made for reading in an 'office-friendly' environment, however I don't think that the book would survive too long in a workshop, the pages are too flimsey and I wouldn't expect them to last in such an environment. To overcome this dilema the publisher might consider packaging the CD with the book for the book price so that hobbists like me can have it available also on screen (e.g. a PC screen that is also being used for CNC operations in the workshop). In that case, why not just have the CD you might ask - I say there is nothing like being able to thumb through the real thing (the book) before hitting the workshop (to view the book on-screen). Notwithstanding, every model engineer should have this reference.

  3. There's definitely a wealth of information / data in this book, 75% of which I will probably never use given the nature of my profession. I'm giving this book 5 stars because so far it's lived up to my expectations. I could probably find some of the same information I need on the internet, but it's handy to have so much of it all right here in this handy albeit rather large book.

I can see, as another reviewer pointed out, that this might not be best suited for hostile environments. It's served me well so far at my clean but cluttered desk, and undoubtedly will continue to hold up for many years. I'm not sure that I'd be willing to pay extra for a bombproof version.

As much as I hate to admit it, sometimes when I need a quick break from staring at the computer monitor, I find myself randomly flipping through the pages of my Machinery's Handbook in search of something interesting. So far, it hasn't let me down.

This won't make it on anybody's fast-paced action/adventure bestseller list, but it's clearly an invaluable resource for the mechanically inclined.

  4. This is a great reference book. It has all the information a student or experienced professional metalworker needs.

Not much of a plot for late nite reading though.

3 comments about MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-632): Managing Projects with Microsoft Office Project 2007.
  1. I have prepared for/taken/passed over 12 certification exams from Microsoft, Sun, and PMI, so I have read my share of exam guides. Having successfully passed this exam, I would comfortably rate this as one of the best out of all that I have read in terms of quality and accuracy.

The exercises and questions at the end of each chapter are extremely effective in helping you learn to use Project 2007. The software simulator (provided by MeasureUp) is quite good and runs very smoothly.

    Overall: Highly recommended!

  2. I used this book to prepare for the MCTS: 70-632 and passed it on my first try using this book and years of experience with Microsoft Project 2003 and recently Microsoft Project 2007. The practice exam on the CD was pretty good - there were about 5 questions out of 200 where I and even the other Microsoft Project 2007 did not agree with the author. If you are studying for the certification, go through every page, chapter test and the CD. Also, you will need to understand a lot Task Type and Effort Driven Scheduling (predict durations, work calculations and overall impact to your WBS), Resourcing Project Plans (forecasting time-phase generic skills, using resource pools.

I estimated about 50 percent was technical (using Project 2007) and 50 percent knowledge on Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK).

  3. This book is excelent as an orientation for the test. And the CD brings to you several tools to help you to prepare for the certification.

5 comments about Welder's Handbook, RevisedHP1513: A Guide to Plasma Cutting, Oxyacetylene, ARC, MIG and TIG Welding.
  1. Bought this book in part because I was hoping it would give some insight on plasma cutter selection, use, and other info.

However, in the plasma cutting section I find half a page of general info, and 12 pictures of people cutting stuff out with plasma cutters or things that have been cut with a plasma cutter. In other words, nothing useful.

The rest of the book looks like exactly the same stuff that's in his other welder's handbook. It is good info, but for something that's "Revised & Updated" it sure doesn't seem to me like it has much new info.

  2. I have only welded once before with no instruction. It seems extremely difficult. Now after reading this book I understand why it is difficult and I know a lot more. My goal of purchase and reading the book were completed yesterday, and now I have to ask my wife if I can buy another power tool and some steel to play with. I can't promise her, but I think I will have fun and maybe burn myself. This book seems adequate for a real welder also. I liked the format and level of explanation.

  3. Packed full of knowledge about all aspects of welding. Whether you are a new welder or an experienced welder, there is likely some good information for you. I have welded for close to forty years and picked up some good information.

  4. A good beginners guide to all types of welding. Short on details for the more experienced.

  5. this book is only good for a general overview of various processes and techniques. none of the articles are very in depth and all the illustrations and photos is printed in black and white. its a decent review for an experienced welder. if you are serious about welding get an all inclusive in depth text book like Welding Principles and Applications. it will cost you but you will not be diappointed. try to find a used or older edition, the 6th edition is the latest.
