2 comments about Rope, Twine and Net Making (Shire Library).
- This book gives a very, very brief of rope making in England.
This is NOT a HOW to Book
- This book gives a brief history of the making of rope, twine and nets. Starting when each person or village made the needed rope, twine and fishing nets to when it became a big industry. The many b&w pictures illustrate the history and are very interesting.

5 comments about Lean Production Simplified: A Plain-Language Guide to the World's Most Powerful Production System.
- "Lean Production Simplified" is essential reading for anyone new to lean. With a wonderfully clear writing style Pascal Dennis gives an overview of the structure and tools of lean including an excellent short history. Dennis clearly explains the concepts and philosophy of lean - though this is not a "how-to" book and does not give detailed methods for the tools. The book is an excellent introduction to lean. For example, I found its 20 pages on Hoshin planning explained the process better than any other work I've read.
You can tell when an author really understands the lean process - they emphasise the importance of behavioural and cultural aspects of lean and recognise that these are at least as important as the tools. Dennis's chapters on involvement and lean culture are excellent. He clearly lives the lean philosophy. "Lean Production Simplified" is essential reading for anyone wishing to understand lean.
- This book explains lean manufacturing in the TPS (Toyota Production System) method. The sentences tend to be short and choppy, but if you have a basic understanding of lean this book can enrich knowledge and provide specific examples.
- Lean Production Simplified provides a great practical guide to the implementation of lean principles. The author gives enough history and background of lean production to put the concepts into context. He then covers all the basic concepts with a unified approach. We are using this book to orient several new team members to the concepts as we implement important lean projects.
- I thought this book did a good job in giving you an overview of the lean tools. It is a good reference point if you would like to further study lean activities.
- I've read many of the more popular lean books (see our other reviews), and have been doing lean full-time since 2000. In my view this book has the best, most complete field of view of them all, touching on several concepts that get no attention in any other lean overview text. It should be noted that as far a depth goes however, the name says it all... Lean Production Simplified.
Pro:
-Shingo prize winner
-Brief yet complete coverage of lean topics
-Coverage of several topics not found elsewhere, including the much ignored hoshin kanri
-Decent chapter summaries, ample examples and figures
Con:
-I guess about the worst you can say is there's too many misspellings for a 2nd edition.
-Perhaps too many sentences that start with, "At Toyota" which create some repetitive reading.
Bottom line: Highly recommended for exposure to the basics.

4 comments about Food Analysis (Food Science Texts Series).
- dear sirs, as a matter of fact ,we need to know if this book is usefull for processing of potato chips and can this book help us for using a better technology for oil consumption in our production.since we are researching on how we can reduce oil in potato chips.
- The book handles all the techniques, principles and recommended applications regarding sampling, proximate analysis and special analysis for the main components in foods, carbohydrate, protein and fats. It also includes an excellent review on the biochemical and instrumental methods. I would recommend a second book regarding the special analysis for the food groups. I lecture on food analysis and found it to be an excellent support for my course.
- i found it a very good book to understand the basics of spectroscopy and chromatography in addition to other analysis procedures.
- This text book is required by the professor for the course my daughter taking for her 4th year in bio-engineering and is available in the university bookstore at twice the price we paid at Amazon. The delivery time for Amazon is amazingly fast, virtually overnight for Amazon Prime account, my daughter is completely satisfied with it. I would advise those who are attending college to make Amazon as the first stop for their text book needs.

2 comments about Product Development Performance: Strategy, Organization, and Management in the World Auto Industry.
- This book is very famous in the auto industry. It describes and compares world auto makers' overall competitiveness with regard to product development. It explains to us why the Japanese auto makers dominated world auto market in the late 1980s and the early 1990s. The Japanese introduced their products far faster than competitors, the Europeans and Americans, to the global market, not to speak of their superior product quality. What happened to them? Were there any market condition involved? The answer is no. The Japanese product managers were champions not coordinators or linkage men. They influenced more power over functional product development teams, such as styling, design, testing. The Japanese also showed real TQM(Total Quality Management) not a lip-service. I think this book helped other automakers to scrutinze their process and to prepare for the next challenge. The Americans and European automakers do not lag behind now in the survival races. They get back to their position as world leader as they did in the early 1900s. If you want to know more about the logic and reasoning, this book has more.
- All too often, academic studies in business (and many areas for that matter) are exercises in sausage production: they repackage a few new facts in some worn out methodology and claim it is new. But at their best, they can provide a new framework and vocabulary to adress complex new issues. PDP was just such a book on the auto industry, which was in serious crisis in the 1980s.
This is one of the first and best books on concurrent engineering (cross functional development) and it sets a very high standard. It is well written and persuasive. While some diagrams are overly ambitious - one has 59 arrows and 14 explanatory captions - it rarely gets bogged down in jargon or long proofs. Upon re-reading it, it does not at all appear out-dated; indeed, their prescriptions appears to have been learned and integrated into many American industries, from autos to computer networks.

1 comments about Finite-Temperature Field Theory: Principles and Applications (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics).
- Unfortunately, I am not a high-energy physicsist--instead I am a condensed matter theorist. This book has gave me a complete summary on what does the quantum field theory say. If you were confusing with the statements from the other QFT text books, I recommend you to read this book, which provides both physics and mathematics enough.
