- This book was originally copyrighted in 1979 by Charles Garret and Roy Lagal, who can now be considered among the original Old Timers in the field of metal detecting. The book provides a brief history of the development of the metal detector that led up to the introduction of the VLF/TR detector. Though not as in-depth technically as the book "Electronic Metal Detector Handbook" by E.S. Legaye, it does provide a good introductory technical description of the theory, design, and operation of the ground canceling VLF/TR type of detector. The book also describes the operating charisteristics of the VLF detector, and provides a chapter by chapter comparison of the VLF with Standard Transmit-receive detectors, Pulse Induction Detectors, RF Two Box units, Phase Readout Gradiometers, Beat Frequency Oscillators, and the development of discrimination techniques. Block diagrams of a VLF-TR detector are provided, but there are no schematics. (Actual schematics for metal detectors seem to be highly guarded for all except the most basic models!) The analog technology described reflected the state of the art for 1979. Approximately half of the book is devoted to using the VLF-Tr metal detecting for everything from coins and relics, to gold prospecting. This book makes for interesting reading, especially if you happen to have one of these older detectors and are interested in learning more about the theory of its operation, and quirks of actually using it. It also provides a somewhat nostalgic reflection as to how things were accomplished electronically, before the use of digital techniques. On the downside, the VLF-TR is of course promoted as the answer to virtually every problem that the metal detectorist is likely to encounter. Twenty-one years later, we know there is still a lot of room for improvement!
