5 comments about Introduction to Chemistry for Biology Students, An (9th Edition).
  1. This is one of the best educational books I have ever come accross in my entire life. The answers are on the side of the page that you are doing the questions. He teaches by asking. Its a perfect book. More than 5 star!!

  2. This book is the BEST!! it's format is extremely easy to understand because it tells you what you need to know and then right after it has fill in the blanks about the concepts it covered so basically it tell you something, then has you answer a question on the concept to help you remember it. HIGHLY recommended for Biology students...I'm really struggling to understand my biology course because the first 6 chapters of biology deals with chemistry so this is a life saver.

  3. This book helped me a lot in understanding complex sections in chemistry usually covered in biology. I am a nursing major, and I find this book very helpful in the following classes (prerequisites): Human Physiology, General Microbiology, and Chemistry (Chemistry for Allied Health Majors). I let my friend barrow this workbook and she told me personally that it is easy to read and very effective in teaching concepts...
This book summarizes in a very informative and interactive way Chemistry concepts that will sound foreign for a non-chemistry major. Very good and very concise. It's worth the price.

  4. This book is easy to read, but the material contained within is very basic. If you have any chemistry knowledge, you might find the book boring. I like it, so I am enjoying it.

  5. This book is exactly what my daughter needed for her college course. I am very happy with the service at Amazon.com. Quick delivery.

5 comments about Organic Chemistry.
  1. Very well-written organic chemistry book. Without detailed explanation, the approach the authors use makes organic chemistry a little easier to learn, and the examples and explanations in this textbook are superb. I don't highly recommend organic chemistry, but if you want to learn it, I highly recommend this book.

  2. This book is good. It explains the concepts clearly and wont ever leave you thinking "how the hell did it do that??"
However, Organic Chemistry 6th edition by Francis A. Carey accompanied by the enormous solutions manual is the best Organic Chemistry book on earth, hands down. It presents the ideas in an order that is compounding, so that everything you do in earlier chapters is reinforced with the following chapters; and it presents the concepts as clear as day. Once you've learned to push electrons everything else is cake.
Perform the problems in the back of each section and read the solutions manual after each problem and you wont get lower than a C on any test, guarenteed.

  3. other books that follow mechanism (as opposed to functional group) approach to learning organic chem:

Organic Chemistry by Marye Anne Fox, James K. Whitesell (ISBN 0763721972)

"A Guidebook to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry" and "A Primer to Mechanism in Organic Chemistry" both by Peter Sykes

Organic Chemistry by Joseph M. Hornback (ISBN 0534389511)

Look at my other reviews for other chemistry books.

  4. This book provides with a complete review of all the major organic chemical groups and gives a detailed and thorough presentation of their chemical structure as well as their reactivity. It also deals with a series of organic reactions that are considered as the basic ones in organic chemistry with a good overview of their mechanistic pathways.
Finally, the writers offer plenty of examples in which these reactions are used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical or other compounds.
Without a doubt, one of the most useful, comprehensive and complete book in organic chemistry for both beginers and advanced organic chemistry students.

  5. Excellent textbook. Covers very systematically, and with ample regard for modern methods (something most organic textbooks lack), everything from first semester orgo to the beginning grad level. Only major deficiency is the general uselessness of the index -- makes looking things up difficult. But overall, a great textbook.

4 comments about Hands-On Chemistry Activities with Real-Life Applications: Easy-to-Use Labs and Demonstrations for Grades 8-12.
  1. This book has tons of labs and demonstrations. Many of the labs and demonstrations can be found in other chemistry texts and on-line, this book brings them all together with good explainations and illustrations. Herr and Cunningham have included additional information for the teacher and there are thoughtful extension questions provided for the students. This is a good resource book. I allow my students to try the labs after school and when they come in on their free periods. My only gripe is that it sometimes takes careful reading to follow the procedures as they are written in paragraph form.

  2. An innovative compilation of chemistry experiments.

  3. I am using this book as a reference while homeschooling my middle-school son. It is far and away the best book of science experiments and demonstrations at this level that I have encountered. Every possible chemistry topic at the middle and high school level is covered with multiple examples, all well -indexed and clearly explained. Many can be done with simple materials around the house although some require more sophisticated glassware and a few involve chemicals and/or procedures that would require an institutional setting (for example, needing a fume hood). The latter are well indicated. Best of all, the activities are FUN--we did the Cartesian Diver today and it was a blast!

My only very minor gripe is that a few activities are repeated several times in slightly different formats. More thorough editing and/or cross-referencing would be helpful.

I would recommend the book for homeschoolers such as myself who want to give their students real lab experiences, and also probably for "regular" teachers in middle or high schools.

  4. Very interesting and useful book for chemsitry teachers at high school and even at college. I recommend to put in practice all the strategies proposed by the authors. It really works !

5 comments about Tihkal: The Continuation.
  1. This book is the much anticipated follow up to PIHKAL, and although it does contain some interesting information, the narratives are often disjointed and whimsical. It is as though the authors said almost everything that needed to be said in PIHKAL and included this additional commentary to satisfy themselves rather than the reading audience.

The chemistry section, however, is superlative, and is more than well worth the cost of the book in and of itself if you are interestd in the subject matter.

  2. A penetrating, intellectually substantive work that earns its right at center stage on your bookshelf. Filled with enlightening perspectives and solid scientific thought, hours are spent absorbing its wisdom.

    Highly recommended.

  3. This book is thinner (in every sense) than it's more famous older sibling "PIHKAL", but is well worth getting if you're curious about what became of Shulgin after angering the government by publishing PIHKAL. For those with an academic interest in psychedelic drugs, it's almost a mandatory purchase, containing dozens of novel new tryptamine-based psychoactives (including several LSD derivatives), many of which are now available through the so-called "research chemical" trade. For better or worse, Shulgin's two books are landmark works in the developing relationship between the public, the government, and a dizzying array of new psychoactive drugs.

  4. This is a fine contribution although 'The Continuation' might lead one to believe that both Pihkal and Tihkal are of the same sphere. I suppose they are, if one isn't well-read regarding the metabolism and synthesis of these two very different families of compounds. As a synthetic organic chemist, I appreciated not only the autobiographical sketch but also the synthesis/observation section. Some of his methods are a bit dated. However, they are indeed valid if you don't mind sacrificing yield and purity.

  5. Why hunt for mushrooms when you can make your own psilocybin

5 comments about General Chemistry I as a Second Language: Mastering the Fundamental Skills.
  1. This book helped me get an A in Chem I. Period. Sure, my text was better than most and my professor was MUCH better than most...but every text will have shortcomings. And most professors aren't that helpful. Let's face it - most don't even care. So, THANK YOU David Klein for lending your expertise to those future professionals who would suffer through Chem I unnecessarily without your help. Do yourself a favor & invest the $20 or so that this book will cost you. Warning: Though you will probably still have to put in about 5-8 hours a week studying for this class, this book will make it worth your while...instead of just sitting there, blankly staring at diagrams, your time will be well (and properly) spent.

  2. This book was very helpful in explaining Gen Chem 1. This guy has a way of making chemistry understandable. I was having a hard time grasping the concepts. With the help of this book I was finally able to understand. I recommend this book to people who are having problems understanding key concepts. I only wish there was one for Gen Chem 2.

  3. This is a wonderful introduction to Organic Chemistry. Klein explains things in a way that can be understood quickly and offers many problems with the solutions available. GREAT!

The reason it gets only 4 stars is after Section 8.8, there are lots and lots of pages (basically blank) with instructions to look in your text book and fill these in. Or to fill them in with notes from class.

  4. This book shows most of the principles you'll find in your Gen CHEM I course and helps to explain their relevancy to the GEN CHEM I course. Stongly suggest outlining this guide in accordance to whatever text book you'll be using in your course so you wont be studying non-relevant items. Overall this book will help you by giving you a second perspective as to what you are studying.
Would I buy it again? No, my text book was pretty thorough without it. I gave it to a friend that loves it.

  5. This book is DEFINITELY helpful for the beginning chemistry student. It explains everything in very simple language, and has plenty of practice problems (complete with answers in the back) to help you solidify your understanding of the topic.

5 comments about The Cell's Design: How Chemistry Reveals the Creator's Artistry.
  1. Rana takes the design argument to a new, scientific level. He delves into details of the cell finding complexity that only design can explain. This book, perhaps more than any before it, show how design is indeed a scientific enterprise. Packed with science and the latest research, this book tends to be technical, but stick with it and you'll find its undeniable conclusion.

  2. This book is exactly what I had been looking for: a book that explains the many incredibly complex features that exist inside a single cell.

It can be a bit of a tough slog getting through it if biology is merely a side interest, but its doable and very worthwhile.

  3. Dr. Rana is an expert in his field and his ability to give an unbiased examination of the facts provides clarity for those unconvinced by the evolutionary viewpoint. Those who are assuming that a "God of gaps" approach dominates the book will be dissapointed; facts and the latest research build the case simply and elegantly that life is no accident. The Cell's Design doesn't force feed the reader into a conclusion however and readers may walk away either agreeing or disagreeing with the idea of a Creator. This is the beauty of the book and readers can be guaranteed that there is no slight of hand with details and data.

The Cell's Design won't disappoint the ID fan and it may even gain the respect of the devout Darwinist. The tone of the book is generous and has the potential to generate conversation between all sides in this debate. So whether you are an amateur enthusiast of science and the ID debate or you are looking for the latest material to engage, this book will provide you with much to think about.

  4. One of the most amazing books I have ever read! This is the kind of stuff you will NEVER see in the mainstream media. Dr. Rana provides SOLID biochemical evidence that absolutely invalidates ANY attempt to explain the origin of life in random, undirected, materialistic terms. Employing extensive empirical data, Dr. Rana neither speculates nor hypothesizes in dismantling naturalistic explanations for the incredibly complex biomolecular machinery that we find at the subcellular level. I strongly recommend this book as a companion to Dr. Michael Behe's "Darwin's Black Box" for any reader who is objective and intellectually honest enough to approach this topic with an open mind. - John Donahue, BA, History and Philosophy of Science, Princeton University

  5. Dr Rana's book provides a very insightful examination of the mechanisms of the cell. If it were available sooner, it would have saved me a considerable amount of work in preparing a DNA lecture at Palomar College.

    Adjunct Professor

  1. Great textbook. Very clear and thorough. Since I am having to teach myself this Chemistry course this semester, I am greatful that I at least have a good book to work with.

  2. FAST AND FABULOUS SERVICE. ITEM CAME IN BETTER SHAPE THAN ANTICIPATED, NO PROBLEMS WITH TRANSACTION OR SHIPPING. THANKS!!

  3. The book was in good conditions, but the shipping was very slow.. The seller did not send it to me in the first 3 weeks... According to her, she did not receive a confirmation from amazon.. I got the book a month later. I needed the book for my class. I received it a week before the end of the course..I wrote to her and she replied two days later.. I never had this problem before... I go to school and I have bought all my books on line... I am very disappointed.

  4. the book came in a better condition than i thought it was going to be, i ordered it used and it was practically new when i got it, the only downside was that the shipping was a bit slow, i expected the book days sooner than i got it.
