5 comments about Principles of Power Electronics (Addison-Wesley Series in Electrical Engineering).
  1. Comprehensive and lucid... this book presents all of the most important subjects in modern power electronics and electric power system control, and presents them in an organized fashion with a readable format. It also touches on many emerging concepts currently being developed in labs and universities, and is revised frequently.

  2. Power electronics is the technology associated with the efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric power by static means from its available input form into the desired electrical output form. This conversion is performed with semiconductor switching devices such as diodes, thyristors and transistors. In contrast to electronic systems concerned with transmission and processing of signals and data, in power electronics substantial amounts of electrical energy are processed. The authors at MIT designed this text specifically to teach the subject of power electronics. Although the coverage is broad, they develop topics in sufficient depth to expose the fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, methods, and circuits necessary for the reader to understand and design power electronic systems as diverse as a 5 Watt switching converter and a 600 MWatt high-voltage DC transmission terminal. Topics include an introduction, form and function (topology), introduction to rectifier circuits, bridge and polyphase rectifier circuits, phase-controlled converters, high-frequency switching dc/dc converters, isolated high-frequency dc/dc converters, variable-frequency dc/ac converters, resonant converters, ac/ac converters, dynamics and control, state-space models, linear and piecewise linear models, feedback control design, components, review of semiconductor devices, power diodes, power transistors, thyristors, magnetic components, ancillary issues, gate and base drives, thyristor commutation circuits, snubber circuits and clamps, and thermal modeling and heat sinking. There are plenty of instructive diagrams shown throughout the book, and the only thing I can really say against it is that part two of the book entitled "Dynamics and Control" seems out of place in this book, since it really has nothing much to do with the subject of power electronics and seems to disrupt the flow of what is otherwise an excellent book. Also, it is very hard to cover the subject of dynamics and control adequately in just the four chapters allocated to the subject.

  3. It's an excellent and comprehensive review of Power Electronics with a different point of view and a very practical approximation.

  4. I am very happy with the contents of this book. The text is very readable, the examples are good, and the problems seem to be well constructed. I have two items that I would have liked to see different on this book. First is that the book is paperback (there doesn't appear to be a hardcover version.) The book is pretty thick, and the binding is already starting to show signs of failing in places. The second point, which is more minor, is that there are no answers any of the problems (i.e. odd answers in the back) which can be frustrating when trying to do some independent learning from the text.

Overall, I'm happy with this book for its contents.

  5. This is not the best textbook to start you off in Power Electronics. It is OK as a reference book. I prefer much more "Power Electronics: Converters, Applications and Design", Mohan, Undeland and Robbins, Wiley", and wish that my profesor used that one in his class.

5 comments about SNMP, SNMPv2, SNMPv3, and RMON 1 and 2 (3rd Edition).
  1. I had to buy this book as part of a Network Management class and have found it to be utterly useless during and afterwards. It is definatly the worse book that I have ever had to buy. First, it was mighty expensive for the quality of the writing/material. Second, the material within the book could have covered in a much better way. It was very difficult to understand because it travelled much to far into SNMP/RMON. I found it almost useless as a reference, because it did not cover anything in a way that was pertinant to actually using SNMP/RMON on a network. I believe that Stallings definatly complicates SNMP beyond all reconition, FUBAR even. It lacked real world examples and uses. Perhaps this book would be great for someone who develops apps based on SNMP, but for someone who wants to learn about using it, its a massive waste of time.

  2. This is the best book I found on SNMP. I found Essential SNMP to be lacking in detail and the descriptions in Managing Internetworks with SNMP were not so clear. So far it has been able to answer every question I have had regarding SNMP.

  3. This book is deep down description of all the OIDs and structure of SNMP.
If you want to know how the messages get through (SNMP get and other commands) in a developer's point of view, and you want a full dump of all the leafs and OIDs in the MIB structure, then this book is for you.
If you are a systems administrator looking for a practical way to understand how to use SNMP to manage your network devices, then look elsewhere (Essential SNMP, for instance).

  4. Good reference for SNMP.
Quite useful introduction on Network Management principles, to set the stage. You may need to dig into some more detail reference (RFCs) for some specific answers but still this book is suggested for SNMP developers and testers.

  5. First off the book showed up quickly (Under 7 days, I forget exactly how many, but I was satisfied)

Second, we develop and maintain an embedded SNMP implementation in our product. I understood snmpv1, was weak on v2 and knew nothing of v3. This book gave me a good solid understanding of snmpv3 and how it interacts with v1 & v2. So I found this book useful for my uses in implementing and maintaining snmp.

5 comments about Web Design in a Nutshell.
  1. I read a lot of reviews. I have still 1 edition of this book from 2001 year.
And there was information how design stuff works for IE and Netscape.

But IE is sucks and Netscape is also and in all reviews of this book i saw only mention of IE.

Is there any information 'bout difference in how pages look in IE and Mozzila FireFox?

  2. I really enjoy this book. I used it to learn Cacading Style Sheets. A few years ago I had been part of a team to develop a web application where I used the "old" way of constructing a web page - with the tags, etc. I used this book to learn to separate page content from formatting using CSS. I find that it is a good reference book to have on my desk.

  3. Web Design in a Nutshell is not merely an updated edition of the previous book (2001) of the same title. Extremely quick substantial changes in the web design systems over these past few years simply wouldn't allow for such an update. Instead, the author has composed this book from the ground up to address the issues and concerns of web designers in 2006. This reference covers all the basics of web design how tos from basics like choosing text elements and creating links through more challenging topics such as optimization of graphics and using flash on web pages. However, the portion of the book that I found most useful was the sections on designing sites for a variety of different browsers and increasing accessibility on your website. Together, these aspects create an easy to understand guide for those individuals wanting an introduction to web design or as very solid reference material for current web designers.

  4. I got this from the library to see how I liked it, and then ordered it. If you do websites and are overwhelmed by all the myriad details, and needing a quick clarification or reminder, you might want to add this to your library.

  5. This comprehensive reference book covers every topic a web designer could need in 36 chapters. Numerous code examples and figures showing the end result make it easy to find and understand. As with so many of the website reference books published by O'Reilly Media, Inc., this book is an excellent addition to a web designer's library.

2 comments about Private Pilot Maneuvers (Spiral ed./JS314510).
  1. This book is a excellent way to get prepared for particular maneuver-lessons with a flight instructor as well as solo flights. It includes good operating procedures from the start-up to the tie-down. It saved me and many others a lot of time and money during Private Pilot Flight Training.

  2. This is an excellent book from an excellent series by Jeppesen.

My instructor recommended this and I read it through upon first recieving. Prior to the lessons I would look in more detail at those maneuvers we were to practice and afterwards I would clarify misunderstandings with it.

The book has excellent step by step instructions for each move and is accompanied by high quality and easily understandable diagrams.

Anyone on track for private pilot certification should have a book like this (if not this particular one) in their kit.

4 comments about Applied Electromagnetism (Pws Engineering Foundation).
  1. This was not a good book. I found it very difficult tounderstand and learn from. It is the required text for a class I'min. I am currently looking around Amazon.com for a text to replace it. Save money. Buy something else.

  2. I just completed a junior-level course which made use of this text. Although the topics are arranged differently than in similar textbooks, I found the explainations of EM concepts quite good. The main strength is getting right to Maxwell's equations in chapter two (--after all, that's what EM is all about, right?). Maxwell's equations are explained well and at an introductory level so that the reader is not overwhelmed. The main weakness is the very underdeveloped first chapter, "Complex Vectors" which is too brief and oversimplified for the subject matter at hand. The book also presents very informative and even entertaining asides on applications, such as "anti-glare headlights" (polarization), "tails of comets" (radiation pressure) and "microwave ovens" (penetration depth). Overall, a very good first EM book.

  3. I'm currently in an electromagnetics course that uses this book and this book is awful. The author cannot explain the concepts in a clear manner. The author skips parts of the explaination leaving me confused as to what he did. Also the examples in the book are not very good, an answer is given with little or no work. The book needs more examples and needs to explain the concepts much better. If you're in a course that uses this book get another book, such as Schaum's Outline of Electromagnetics. From a student point of view, this is a horrible book.

  4. Pros: Relate EM into real life examples, which makes the book interesting to read. Simple but powerful examples and equations which made my life a lot easier.
Cons: Lack of example and pratice problems.
Overall: Very nice book to read for understanding of the materials, but you'll need to pratice problems on your own.

4 comments about Engineering Documentation Control Handbook : Configuration Management for Industry.
  1. This book explains the theory but includes plenty of examples of how to set up an Engineering Document Control, or Configuration Management (CM) system. The examples in the text focus on an imaginary manufacturing company. The text does include some mention of tailoring a CM system for software developers.

The text is crisp and the books organization clear and logical. One of the last chapters includes what is essentially a checklist of how to put together a CM system.

This is not a one size fits all system. The user must use the material in the book as a guide to tailor a CM system to their company's requirements.

Overall an indispensable book for someone trying to set up or overhaul a CM system. I highly recommend it.

  2. Unlike the vast majority of books available on configuration management, this book, as the title suggests, focuses entirely on configuration management in industry. Throughout the book, the author focuses on a simplified, fast configuration management system that exceeds DoD standards. This book, in the chapters titled Change Control and Fast Change, has an exceptional explanation of how to handle configuration modifications. In these chapters the author gives a detailed description of how to set up a system that allows the fastest possible changes to take place. Also, many case studies are given in these sections which provide further insight as to how to implement the correct system for a given situation. Overall, the book is very easy to understand, and serves as an excellent introduction and handbook to a configuration management system for industry.

  3. ...but not for Software CM.
As the title says, this is an Industry CM book. If your need is for Software CM, this book can be used for general CM concepts and background (and to develop a strong understanding of CM principles), but no more (get a software-specific CM/release management book instead). Only a few brief mentions of application of these concepts to software CM. If your need is for doc. control/industry CM, then this is probably an ideal book.

  4. I am a British Chartered Engineer working mainly in Blue Chip energy-related companies. I have just started using this book in my work and find it strongly re-enforces my passion for excellent documentation and design management. It is clearly the current 'bible' for Engineering Documentation Control and is extremely valuable in showing how to climb the 'Configuration Management Ladder' (page 8). It cuts away the dross and complexity that is plentiful nearly everywhere else. So many of us technologists and managers are struggling with hugely powerful new computer packages that integrate most processes in our companies. This is one of the very few books to chart our course and give us a chance of a reliable way through to simplicity, speed and profitability that are so often promissed but so rarely fully attained.

5 comments about Tracking and Kalman Filtering Made Easy.
  1. Brookner builds up from the simplest case (a target moving at constant speed and constant heading) and gradually builds these simple equations into the simplest-case Kalman filter. And this is just in the first chapter! His approach is intuitive; he is rigorous enough, but this book is probably more for engineers than for mathematicians. He develops everything quite logically; in the very earliest going, normal algebraic equations are used and only when it makes sense does he switch to linear algebra, explaining what its advantages are. Great book! Even though the job disappeared, I kept my copy (despite the price!)

  2. Brookner makes a difficult topic very easy to understand without watering down content. I highly recommend this book to anyone filtering position estimates!

  3. This is a graduate level book, but contains everything an undergraduate, engineer, or scientist needs as a reference on the subject. If I was looking for a professor to study under, they would be required to list this book in their syllabus. A software development engineer will find the basis for developing algorithms, or maintaining production software. 16 Pages of Symbol definitions, 37 Pages of Solutions, 8 pages of References.

  4. As a software developer, I was looking for help in developing an algorithm for tracking targets. This book fits the bill perfectly. The author starts with very basic examples, and shows step-by-step how to increase the complexity to work for a myriad of problems. He also shows how many of the filters used for tracking problems are related (mostly just special cases of a very simple algorithm), and when one should be used instead of another (or in some cases why and how to use multiple filters together). The only downside is that there are multiple typos; perhaps the publisher can fix these in the next edition.

  5. The author tries to make the subject easier than it can be made. He does mention general concepts but does not mention under what circumstances these hold. The danger comes when you try to implement it. Of course you get an answer but as the author puts it himself: "surprise!" the answer is wrong because you were not told about the validity of your assumptions. As an example take the issue of the discrete noise covariance matrix i.e. Q. The author gives a simple recipe for constructing this matrix. But he does not tell you that it is only valid for small step size. If you try larger time steps you are in big trouble. The book contains occasional insightful remarks. Also the same filter has several different names in the same paragraph, which can cause confusion.
