2 comments about Absorption Chillers and Heat Pumps.
- I had only 15 minutes time to have a short glimpse on this book ,in a general library in Austin. As I am a chemical engineer and familiar to refrigeration systems , the reason why I was absorbed by this book was colletion of so many details for such a relative small range of engineering . Esmaeil Poornorooz
- Great book, but the description is a lie. The book does not come with any software.

2 comments about Introduction to Statistical Physics.
- This is a cut up version of Huang's Statistical Mechanics book intended for an undergraduate audience. The book is filled with mathmatical errors (or a lot of misprints) and grammatical errors. The chapters are only 3-4 pages on average with absolutely no insight or examples. The problems range from very easy to out of the scope of the book when you go from chapter to chapter. If I could have rated this book a negative value I would have. If you are looking for a starting point for Statistical Mechanics I would look somewhere else because this book is completely useless as far as I am concerned.
- This is a very good book for undergraduate physics students, it illastrates all the important concepts in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics with well quanlified exercises.
However, the face of the book is more or less broken during the shipping.

1 comments about Random Seas and Design of Maritime Structures (Advanced Series on Ocean Engineering, Volume 15).
- Safety and reliability engineers responsible for the design of maritime structures can find in Goda's book all necessary background information for the probabilistic description of loads on those structures. No other book currently exists which gives such a complete overview of all methods to describe random sea waves, with particular attention to the extreme waves. This second edition (2000) contains a number of extensions w.r.t. the first edition (1985) and some sections have been rewritten. The reviewer especially enjoyed studying Goda's outline on correlation models between successive wave heights, marginal probability density functions of wave periods, and joint distributions of wave heights and periods of waves with narrow-band spectra.

2 comments about Differential Scanning Calorimetry.
- This book gave me in depth understanding of each standard test method. It explains the test procedures, the sources of error and how to correct for them. Better written than most ASTM standards but still have room for improvement. It's not a "DSC for Dummies". I still have problem understanding certain parts of this book. Background knowledge of DSC is a needed. If your only source of test procedure is ASTM standards (and you are like me - have problem understanding them), this book will definately help.
- This book is a useful and clearly written practical guide for a technique that is becoming more important for more people as the years go by. If I do have to get critical, I could say that its price is rather high for its size. Although it contains a few references to modulated DSC I would gladly see a second edition that incorporates that side of the story in detail precisely because this new development is revolutionizing the DSC field as we speak. It will make it even broader than it already is and the new users need a book that allows them a good and easy path in. Another thing that is missing is the subfield of microcalorimetry (on protein solutions etc).
The explanation of deconvolution techniques is rather meager because the authors find fourier transforms (too?!) daunting. Otherwise: a fine book

3 comments about Numerical Models of Oceans and Oceanic Processes (International Geophysics Series Volume 66) (International Geophysics).
- This book is amazing. You can learn basic physics from chapter, you can learn powerful analysis techiques from appendixs. Obviously authors can clearify very complicate physics phenomena in a simple way, with the help of modeling work.
- This book is not only for ocean's specialists but all people concerned with environemental activities. Anyway I'am a teacher in advanced economics in France and I use this book as the best example of complex and multivariables model. The authors demonstrate clearly (read the foreword) the necessity for students to enlarge the field of their scientifics investigations to biochemical, numerical analysis, computing, climate. This book could be read by anyone with a little background in mathematics and with a lot of curiosity.
- This is a suprisingly overpriced and depth-lacking
book. I am stunned, definitely stunned. It may probably be used to some advantage by beginners and/or practitionners of ocean modeling, but as an in depth guide it just does not do. I found myself wanting to use it when I picked up knowledge on the Bryan-Semtner-Cox ocean model from the perspective of an independent model developer and I found out that the book was on the whole pretty useless in its content and structure (i.e. layout). It probably deserves more than one star, but the massively exaggerated price just isn't justified. Instead I would recommend the books by Haidvogel, Beckman or Kowalik and Murty (both at WSPC) in addition to some OGCM user guides and papers on the WEB. Anyway, similar remarks do apply to Kantha's other book on Small-scale processes in GFD, although I found that slightly more useful. Nevertheless, I should acknowledge the authors' great courage in attempting so ambitious and potentially most useful projects. Maybe getting together in a larger team with better articulated competences would have helped here.
