  1. I used this book for a year-long course in chemistry as a nursing major. It is excellent for the clear and concise way topics are presented. It is also good because it provides numerous practical examples of how chemistry applies to allied health sciences. The section on biochemistry presents difficult topics in an easy fashion. At least one semester of Introductory Chemistry is assumed in order to use this book. An excellent book overall!

  2. I am back in college, studying Organic chemistry. This book is a Seventh Edition, but wait, its rife with typos. Not just misspelled words, but errors in equations, answers in the back and other annoying things that you would think would be worked out by a SEVENTH EDITION. Did they hire and editor? Did he know how to do math? Did the author check his work? It is so poorly done. Its like an easter egg hunt in a mine field. We had to get chemistry for dummies to supplement it, because the text is unclear, and well, like an easter egg hunt. I found 3 typos in one chapter, and several typos all through the book. No one from Thompson Publishing would return a phone call, and the survey on the companion website: well that was just for fun, I guess. No one has responded to that either. I brought it to the attention of the department head at my college and he said he was unaware of any typos. I would not recommend the book, unless the publisher can publish a list of know typos and post them to the website.

  3. I was very satisfied with the service amazon.com provided for me. I had boughten a textbook and recieved it days before they said it would be delivered to me. Thank you amazon.com!

  4. I had to buy this book for a college chemistry course. The book is well written with plenty of examples and (mostly) good explanations.

When I first read the reviews I have to admit I was wary of the reviewer who said there were many errors and typos. But now that I have the book and have been through 5 chapters, I can't believe how many mistakes there are. It can make things very confusing.

A definition for one thing transposed with the definition of another! answers to example questions transposed with each other!
wrong answers in the back of the book! The book is indeed rife with errors.

The book could be a great one if these errors were addressed. If the publishers don't care about the mistakes, I should think the authors would.

  5. I bought this book to use to teach myself fundamentals of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry becuase I had not taken them as an undergraduate student and needed to know the fundamentals for post-graduate work. I have found this text very helpful and relatively easy to follow as for as text books go. The progression of lessons from section to section is excellent. It is a lot of information jammed into one text, but done well.

3 comments about Clinical Chemistry: Theory, Analysis and Correlation.
  1. I used this as a class text at Boston University for students with a mixed background in chemistry and biology. The students liked it and so did I. Chapters begin with a brief but lucid discussion of relevant physiology which clearly motivates the clinical utility of measuring various analytes. Specifics of methods are included in a manner that aids student appreciation of laboratory approaches without disrupting the flow of information or making the reader suffer through endless pages of soon to be altered protocols. A pleasure to read with clear and effective illustrations. A large book, it is nearly an encyclopedia that can suit the reference needs of a wide range of students including medical technologists, medical and graduate students, residents, physicians and scientists

  2. THIS IS SIMPLY THE BEST CLINICAL CHEMISTRY TEXTBOOK AVAILABLE TODAY. IT HAS THE GREAT ADVANTAGE THAT IT FOCUSES ON THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES THAT EVERYBODY INVOLVED IN THE CLINICAL AREA NEEDS TO KNOW, AND ALSO CORRELATE THIS PRINCIPLES WITH THE ANALYTICAL METHODS, CLEARLY EXPLANING ALL THE "CLASSICAL METHODS", AS WELL AS THE NEWEST METHODS (SUCH AS HPLC, CHROMATOGRAPHIC METHODS) AND THE "CLASSICAL" ONES (SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC, COLORIMETRIC), AND THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES IN USING ONE OR ANOTHER. IF YOU'RE GOING TO BUY A CLINICAL CHEMISTRY TEXTBOOK, BUY THIS ONE.

  3. I would recommend this book to anyone learning clinical biochemistry, or who just want to review the subject of clinical biochemistry. The book is comprehensive, and covers all aspects of clinical biochemistry, It is in the same league as Tietz Textbook of clinical biochemistry, but not as expensive, Tietz is more thorough in some areas. In summary this is a very well written Clinical biochemistry book and would be of use on the bench, and in the teaching environment.

  1. "The Chemist Companion" is a must for the laboratory scientist. It is an invaluable resource for everyday questions like recipes for solvent mixtures, cooling baths, cleaning baths, etc. The index is straightforward and easy to use. Much of the information is in easy-to-read tables. Information is referenced and clearly written. A valuable resource!

2 comments about Pharmacology for Chemists (Acs Professional Reference Book).
  1. Reading this book is much easier after taking the author's course. You get a better feeling for how the book is laid out after listening to the author's lecture style. An organic chemist by training, the author naturally gears this book to the organic chemist. He gives just enough physiology to understand the pharmacology behind it. The book follows his lecture course fairly well with more in-depth discussion on topics of interest. A standard reference text that should be in any chemists' library starting out in the pharmaceutical field.

  2. This book is a one stop shop for Chemists wanting to be familiar with the essentials of Pharmacology. Cannon also adopts the same perspective, always giving stress on the chemical basis of the action of drugs, as well as neurotransmitters, hormones and intracellular signalling molecules. The first part of the book deals with general principles, which Cannon beautifully explains in a nutshell. Topics include the blood-brain barrier, drug receptors, pharmacological assays, metabolic inactivation and modifications of drugs by organs, basic pharmacokinetics, and properties of membranes and cells. The latter part is focused on particular systems. It is especially in discussing the Central Nervous System that the book really shines. Cannon talks in detail about the neurochemistry and physiological action of several important neurotransmitters and their agonists & antagonists. He also discusses the most important diseases arising from malfunctioning of the CNS. The chemistry of addiction also receives due exaplanation. Later chapters include discussions of cardiovascular drugs and drugs which are used to treat Asthma and Allergies.
Pharmacology is a vast science, and it not possible for a utilitarian chemist to work through the grand tomes on the subject to get what he wants. Cannon's book largely remedies this situation, and provides him with the essentials, without overloading him with information. This slim volume is a must on the shelves of Medicinal Chemists, Biochemists and any professional working in, or interested in Drug Design.

  1. This is an excellent book to use as an introduction to clinical chemistry. The chapter layout is logical and the content finds an appropriate balance keeping things concise but with enough depth for most student MTs and generalists. Specialist lab personnel and student MTs with clinical chemistry as a career interest would probably find the Tietz Fundamentals (not the Tietz Textbook-that's overkill) to be a better investment though as it covers topics at greater depth.

  2. This book is not very helpful because it is littered with typos, not only in the text, but also in tables and graphs. I recommend that you save your money and purchase a better book then this.

  3. A great textbook for learning clinical chemistry. Text is very easy to understand and parallels some of the materials for the test manufacturers. The index could be improved slightly, but is still user-friendly.

  4. i'm happy with the service, i recieved the book on on time, but the book it self is awfully odd. it has some errors.

  5. This book gives a quick overview of the different analytes and tests that can be done in a clinical chemistry lab. If you want something more in depth i recomend Teitz
