4 comments about Principles of Contract Law (Concise Hornbook Series) (Hornbook Series Student Edition).
  1. If you want to understand contracts, this is the book you need. I was very confused at the beginning of the semester, but I used this book to supplement my reading and ended up getting an A in the class. Very concise and readable, no confusing language. Good luck.

  2. I bought this and used it heavily through Contracts, and found it took be a very good supplement to the casebook. It covers the main issues in very good detail, but cannot be trusted as a single source for contract law of course - a short book could not be expected to do that.

The book is written in an informal but very information way, and cites many of the popular cases that will presumably exist in your casebook.

That said, if someone read this book before starting contracts, or read each chapter before reading cases relating to the material in that chapter, you'd probably get a more complete and faster comprehension of the material. This book is great for that purpose.

  3. This hornbook makes reading the case book very, very easy. It summarizes all of the concepts from their textbook in a simple and concise manner. I highly recommend reading this book and staying a few pages ahead of your assigned text reading.

  4. A must for those clueless 1Ls who finish their semester and go into finals thinking, "huh?" about Contracts. Although I guess I should include the disclaimer that the book is probably just useful as an companion to Summers and Hillman's casebook.

  1. This is a really great COntracts Hornbook - Farnsworth lays out headnotes/topic sentences in the margins which narrate the particular paragraph/sub-issue you are reading - which assists one in building their outline - IE use the headnotes as one-line topic summary. HOWEVER< I ratd this a "4" because Farnsworth has dropped several of the older classic contract cases for newer - more current cases - therefore - to be REALLY complete - I would get the older edition Farnsworth Contracts as well ( so you are covered with all the casebook cases ) - they can be had for $5.00 - $10.00 just about anywhere. I had mine listed on AMAZON, but have withdrawn it because of this little issue - I use them both - the differences are pretty minor as far as the theory. Actually, the earlier editions is a lighter read - the footnote info of the later edition - are paragraphs in the earlier editions..

  2. I bought this book based on the reviews and before I even received it in the mail, I contemplated sending it back to Amazon because I already had the Legalines and the Emanuel supplements for the Farnsworth text (I am a supplement/hornbook fiend). I really didn't think I could use much more help than I already had. The Legalines is good if at times you have trouble trying to figure out what exactly is going on in the cases. It's a good fall-back--I would not completely rely on this book, however. The Emanuel is excellent; like all the others, it gives you definitions and explains concepts clearly. The practice questions at the end of each section are very helpful, to make sure you are on the right track and are able to apply the concepts (the most important thing!). However, as soon as I opened up this treatise, I was in love. If you are going to get any supplement for the Farnsworth text, this is THE ONE. He explains everything clearly and concisely--in plain words, so its easy to comprehend. If you don't understand the underlying concepts in the text even after your professor makes attempts at penetrating your brain, open up this book and the light will go on. If I could only keep one of my contracts supplements, this would be it, hands down. It is a little pricey, but go for it anyway. I'm totally keeping this for the bar exam.

  3. This particular study guide is marginally helpful. I personally was in a situation where my professor wrote our contracts text, and he recommended Farnsworth. The text is decent as far as understanding and set-up, but in my opinion, there are better study guides out there. The contracts edition of the examples and explanations series is one of them.

  4. This is a excellent text from a renowned author. He explains the subject in a complete and methodological fashion that helps to make the concepts clear. He also doesn't shy away from including contradictory and historical information where appropriate, and the extensive case citation helps to demonstrate the concepts.

  5. I have found this book very helpful. The way that concepts are presented from cases and class discussion can be disorganized. This book is very helpful in clarifying and organzing concepts.

1 comments about Cases and Problems on Contracts, 5th Edition (American Casebook Series).
  1. The first year of law school was very difficult. It was refreshing to use this casebook that so clearly outlined the law of contracts.

The best part about the book is the problems after every section of cases. These problems allowed me to realize whether I understood that type of contract.

The worse part about the book is that the hornbook is a newer edition. So, although Calamari does an excellent job laying out the law, the labels (that tell you which sections in the hornbook to read) do not always correspond.

  1. book arrived quickly and in the condition stated. i'd buy again.

  2. I found the approach this book takes to teaching law doctrine to first-year law students completely wrong-headed. The author seems to think he's taking a more realistic or practical approach than most textbook authors, but ultimately the most obvious result is a lack of clarity. Easily the least helpful book I had to use my first year on any subject. If you are forced to purchase this book, or some other edition of this book, I recommend getting something to supplement it.

5 comments about Contracts in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell (West Publishing)).
  1. The book has an excellent presentation of the theory of contracts. The six main categories are described initially and explained in the ensuing text. These categories consist of:
    1. Express contracts consisting of the standard offer-acceptance
    and consideration trilogy
    2. Implied in fact contracts distinguished by conduct rather than
    by express words
    3. Promissory estoppel referred to as detrimental reliance
    4. Subsequent promises to perform pre-existing obligations
    5. A minority theory of imposing liability based upon a subsequent promise to pay for material benefits previously conferred.
    6. Implied in law quasi-contracts which are non-consensual obligations

The theory of an offer arouses an expectation in the mind of a
reasonable person. Such an expectation may create a power of
acceptance in the offeree. An offer must be sufficiently certain
to make any resulting agreement enforceable and damages calculable. The offer must be certain as to the parties, subject matter, price and time of performance. An offer in which the
offeror or offering party promises to do or not to do something in exchange for a promise by the offeree to act is an offer for
a bilateral or two-sided contract. Further details as to
bargained exchanges, the statute of frauds and a whole host
of complicating factors are set forth simply with a generous
sprinkling of stare decisis cases to illustrate the legal
points explained. The text will be helpful for law students, journalists, constitutional scholars and a whole host of
    other constituencies in academe.

This text is a good supplement to the standard legal texts on contract law. It is well worth the price charged.

  2. This book is as simple as it gets. Contract law is one of the more complex subjects in law school. Any material that adds complexity to an already challenging subject has little value especially to 1L's and even bar candidates. Understanding the basics of the subject is crucial. That is why this book stands out from the rest. I have read the casebook, a hornbook in this jurisdiction as well as various textbooks in a foreign jurisdiction. "Contracts in a Nutshell" gives the simplest explanation of the law by far. It is a must read indeed!

  3. Some time around mid-semester, I was hopelessly lost and confused in my contracts last. In my despair, I bought this book. It opened up my eyes and lifted the fog of contracts for me. My final grade in the class was much better than I hoped for and I have to partly thank this book for that. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars is that it is useful for bare bones knowledge of contracts, and shouldn't be used to replace attending class and taking good notes.

  4. Thank you so much for a nutshell version of contracts! It's all beginning to make sense now! I believe this book was key in helping me to pass this, not so much fun, class!

  5. I got this book halfway through the semester when I realized I didn't understand anything that was going on in my contracts class. It's easy to understand and very helpful. The sample questions at the back were really useful, too. I haven't gotten my exam grade back yet, but I'm positive that this book helped me get a better grade than I would have received without it.

5 comments about Bankruptcy And Debtor/creditor: Examples And Explanations (Examples & Explanations).
  1. This book made the new bankruptcy code changes actually easy to understand. It saved my life and my grade!

  2. This is a great supplement that covers the 2005 changes in the code. Watch out for other supplements that are still owrking off of the pre-2005 amendments.

  3. If you are taking an introductory course in Bankruptcy, get a copy of this book - And use it! If your course also includes Chapter 11 Reorganizations, I would also recommend that you get a copy of Chapter Chapter 11 Business Reorganizations: For Business Leaders, Accountants And Lawyers. They are useful before exams. But I recommend getting them at the start of the semester.

  4. I am an experienced lawyer and regularly read books (usually one-volume treatises) outside my practice area. Comprehensive books on bankruptcy are hard to find, and I purchased Blum's for lack of any alternative. The book is well organized, clearly written, and contains a lot of information. Even the attempts at humor are generally successful.

To offer some unsolicited advice to law students, I don't recommend using this or any supplementary texts in your courses. Stick with the casebook and other materials the instructor assigns. It may seem as if this requires more effort to learn the subject than is warranted, but you won't regret it. You'll never have the time once you start working to reread and think about cases that you have while in school. That 3 years may seem like a long time, but if you take it seriously you will benefit significantly throughout your career. It is surprising how often I encounter exprienced lawyers who are ignorant of matters I learned in law school (now long past) and still remember.

  5. I bought an earlier edition of this book before my law school exam 15 years ago. I ended up with the second highest exam score in the class. I practice consumer bankruptcy law now and I still go back to this book sometimes. It explains complex concepts very simply which is good for both law students and lawyers trying to find a simple way to explain bankruptcy law to clients. The diagrams and flow charts are very useful, too.

  1. Myself and a lot of my classmates used these for our final exam and I have to tell you that they were a HUGE help. Notes and books are great too but myself and a few of my classmates used this as one of our primary ways of preparing the last few days before exams. I highly recommend.

  2. These flash cards are the best way to drill the info into your brain. And the older versions still work too. Keep them around for any and all exams, essay, quizzes.

  3. If you are bored with your textbooks then try these flash cards. They focus in on consideration and promissory estoppel and allow you to work on those areas. These cards skip the fluff and tell you that consideration is 'bargained for exchange and legal value' et cetra. Easier to study than text books but not a substitute for them. Note : Contracts make up 1/3 of the California Baby Bar Exam

  4. As a 1L studying contracts, I find the flashcards very helpful in clarifying my understanding of how the blackletter law can apply to a wide variety of fact patterns. The hypotheticals reinforce my general understanding and recall of the required elements. I find the flashcards to be really helpful right after my contracts professor addresses a particular topic, and also for studying for finals. Also, the flashcards reference a very popular treatise in contracts. If you want to read more indepth on an issue that you're unclear about, you know exactly where to go in the treatise.

  5. I found these flash cards to be of great utility, and I received them in outstanding good condition, shipping was prompt as promised.

  1. I had Crandall (one of the authors) for Contracts my first year of law school. We unfortunately had to use this wretched book. What's funny is that he kept referring us to Farnsworth and Murray if we needed extra help with the material. Turns out that Farnsworth and Murray were so good, you didn't need even need to read the cases. This awful case book is such a POS, it's not worth the paper on which its written.

The case book itself was poorly edited, and the authors' comments/explanations may as well have been written in Chinese. To me it is quite clear that this book was a way for the authors and Aspen Publishing to make $ as it added absolutely nothing that didn't already exist in the Contracts case book market.

  2. find an old edition of this book if the editions are similar. The cases in it are old so the law isn't really changing so if you can tolerate not being on the exact same page in class & can deal with figuring out the different pages save your money since this text is hard to follow! the notes and problems aren't helpful
