5 comments about Organic Chemistry (with Organic ChemistryNOW).
  1. i am using this for my organic class currently. we don't use it often, it is more for using tables and the homework examples, but it really isn't that bad.
granted i haven't looked at a lot of other organic textbooks, but, as far as texbooks go, it isn't bad.

  2. My only real qualm with this book (other than the fact that I had to buy it for Organic Chemistry) was that sometimes the explanations were very simple to understand and helped what was said in class immensely, and sometimes they really didn't make any sense at all. Good enough book though.

  3. You can learn o-chem from this book, especially if you have a good professor, but others are better. When I took the course, many of the students who did well were using Wade or McMurry as supplemental texts. I later tutored for a section which used the McMurray book and realized why - most of the mechanisms are explained better in those other books than they are in Brown, and some of the material, eg epoxide reactions, in Brown is so simplified that I realized when I was tutoring that I had learned it wrong the first time.

The chapter organization of the book is nice, as is the artwork, and I thought the problems were reasonable. The solutions manual came in very handy though.

If you are required to use this text, I would recommend looking for a used copy of Wade or McMurray as well

  4. They had everything I needed along with course software in the book. It was delivered promptly and without any problems.

  5. I ordered this book on a Monday and it was on my doorstep on Wednesday, I was very impressed by the speed and courtesty of the seller. Thank you so much!

  1. book was in really good condition, although it didn't come as fast as i expected it to come.

  2. well, he talks about lots and lots and lots of experiments. I hate this book

  3. I am an undergraduate in an advanced general chemistry class and I had to purchase this...atrocity. Principles of Modern Chemistry is written by three physical chemists, who, while experts in their own fields, have an extremely skewed and flawed view of general chemistry. This book is not an effective textbook. It is replete with mistakes (diagrams, equations!!,questions), and very few effective example questions to reinforce the concepts. Instead, there are random equations placed about, and the central concepts are only lightly discussed. The organization of this textbook is also quite terrible. I love chemistry, I hate this textbook.

  4. The product was received in excellent condition, exactly as described. I requested and payed for expedited shipping but received it via standard shipping.

  5. This book is not as approachable as many general chemistry books; as a previous reviewer has noted, this book is written by physical chemists and the organization and presentation of the concepts in the text reflects this. As a physical chemist, I generally like this text; however, I acknowledge that it's not for everyone and I do have a few critiques.

Students who are not mathematically-inclined will have a hard time with this text: the thermodynamics section, the derivation of the kinetic theory of gases, and some of the derivations of the quantum mechanics material are intimidating! However, students with a firm grounding in math and physics will get much more out of this text than they will out of other standard general chemistry texts like Brown and LeMay (Chemistry The Central Science Tenth Edition).

I would strongly recommend this book for students who have an interest in math and physics or who have already taken an introductory chemistry course and want to understand the phenomena described at a more detailed level. For AP Chemistry or for students who haven't taken intro physics or intro calculus, I would instead recommend the Brown and LeMay book. I feel that its coverage of some of the topics is a bit more superficial, but it is more approachable for students taking chemistry for the first time.

One last note: I dislike the newest edition of this book because they authors reorganized the chapters into a "quantum first" presentation (quantum mechanics is introduced in chapter 4 rather than chapter 15 as it was in the 5th edition). While this organization is suitable for some full-out physical chemistry courses, it is not appropriate for this book. If this book is to be used as a general chemistry book, consider doing the chapters out of order: start with the history of chemistry chapters, skip to the thermo stuff, and come back to quantum later. It's much easier to grasp intuitively if you work from the macro to the micro and not the other way around.

3 comments about Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques: A Small-Scale Approach (Brooks/Cole Laboratory Series for Organic Chemistry).
  1. An outstanding lab text for sophomore level 1-yr organic courses. Any chemistry/physical science major should not sell this book back at the end of the semester! Half of the book is dedicated to experiments which while informative is not the real gem here. The other half of the book covers techniques in organic and microscale chemistry. If you ever need to build a chromatographic column or do vacuum filtration again, you will be glad that you kept this book in your library.

The techniques section alone justifies buying this book. Chemistry majors, microbiologists, environmental scientists and engineers will all find this text valuable in their future careers.

  2. Dr. Pavia's class was so much fun. It was great to have a book written for our facility, by our instructors. I recommend this book to other schools because the techniques are clearly explained and the experiments are interesting.

  3. It has taken this company a month to even send this book. It is quite amazing how slow this company and how it treats its customers. Do not expect books to come unless you want to wait til the book become a classic. Highly suggest to purchase from someone else. Luckly, I've been using a book from lab TA for my organic lab
    class.

  1. This is the book you need to know about General, Organic and Biological Chemistry. You won't regret because it is very straightforward and easy to follow. You can learn a great deal out of this book.

  2. Why did the price drop 100$ right after the semester started. I paid 167$ for this book four weeks ago now it is 61$? WTF Amazon, that is crooked as hell.

5 comments about Principles of Biochemistry (4th Edition).
  1. The book is decent. To be honest though, reviewing textbooks is kind of funny. Does it matter what I say? I suppose if you're ordering this book because you honestly just have a burning desire to learn about the principles of biochemistry, well... the more power to you. You'll learn it just fine from this book. If you're just buying the book because it's the required text for your college class (like I expect), well yeah, doesn't really matter what I say, does it?

  2. I am a biochemistry professor. After years of using another text I decided to try the Voet & Voet text. I was very excited about their latest edition and couldn't wait to teach with it. Unfortunately it was a disaster. There are far too many trees in Voet & Voet, and students couldn't see the forest this year. For next year I am looking at "Principles of Biochemistry" 4th edition by Horton et al.

So, in response to V. Kankanala below, student perspectives in these Amazon Reviews are very useful to those of us assigning the texts.

  3. This is one of the most readable texts for biochemistry on the market. It would be most useful for undergraduates and medical students. It is almost useless for graduate students in the biological sciences because it doesn't talk enough about experimental strategies. The older version of this text was much cooler because it has stereoviews. This feature makes the book stand out because the stereoviews are awesome. Whose idea was it to remove them??? This would make a good first book in biochemistry, but for upper level students I would recommend Stryer.

  4. This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon. Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts. 2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc) Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:
    - Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.
    - Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)
    - Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

  5. I had to purchase the book because of the General Biochemistry course that I took at school. Although it is a well-written book, it does not provide the materials that are covered in our class. I do not even know why this book is required for an upper-division general biochemistry course! In other words, the book is very superficial and does not have enough substance.

Moreover, there are a lot of errors in the answer key section. You can pay slightly more and buy Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, but at least you would have something that you can learn from. I would not recommend this book.

5 comments about Principles of Instrumental Analysis.
  1. This book covers the basics of instrumental analysis well. This is not a book for someone who needs colored illustrations and flashy pictures. The key words do not jump out of the page like many of the new undergraduate text books. The text is to the point. As with any textbook, there are some minor errors, but this book is better than some others I've encountered.

  2. I have to use this textbook for one of my classes, and I must say, it is horrible. The examples for problems in the book hardly give any explanation of what they are doing. The questions at the end of the chapter are very difficult and looking back at the chapter just makes the question even more confusing. I like to use textbooks when I do not understand what is going on in my class, but this one does not help at all! I think the only way you can understand this book is if you are already well educated in the course. Everytime I am assigned problems in the book, I cringe, because I know I am going to be spending hours being more confused than I have ever been in my life.

  3. This is definately not the best textbook in the world. It is excrutiatingly detailed and does not easily guide you through the material, helping you to learn it. On the other hand, its detail is what makes it a phenomenal reference book. In it you can find not only vast amounts of information on your topic, but also references to aid you in researching it further.

I admit it. I couldn't use this book at all when I first started my analysis class but now it has become an invaluable tool in my research and a key in my reference library.

  4. Be aware that even though you may purchase the book not all of its services are up and running. I have had this text for almost 6 months and even though I paid a heavy dollar for its resources that are to include great online aides, the good majority of the aides remain to be in the process of "coming soon" a line that I'm beginning to interpret as never. This isn't the largest set back ever as the hard copy is a great resource, but a notable one.

Another area to watch out for is that there are several incorrect answers in the answer key. Some of the solutions in the key correspond with the last edition and were not properly changed to accommodate the new numbers and slight alterations used in this versions end of chapter exercise... again just another annoyance.

It is a good reference overall, not a great study tool as there are few worked out examples of applying the formulas and concepts. Helpful diagrams though.

  5. I don't own this book but saw it in the library of the chemistry department. It is written in a formal and technical language that only an expert in instruments can understand. it is not written for students so that if you want to learn instrumental analysis do not buy it. Unfortunately there are no other books in the market which worth mentioning about instrumental analysis.
