5 comments about The Everything Soapmaking Book: Recipes and Techniques for Creating Colorful and Fragrant Soaps (Everything: Sports and Hobbies).
- As someone who is a beginner at soapmaking I found this book provides a great overview of the subject. Really covers a lot of ground, pretty much any question you can think of is answered here. Lots of useful recipes as well so as you proceed there are many more advanced recipes you can try. Definitely very useful for anyone learning this craft.
- Having read many books on soapmaking and having made some soap, I find my returning to this book to check methods, and ideas. The book is well written easy to read, understand and full of good information for all types of soap making. A must have for the begining soapmaker.
-
This is a great book for soapers. If you are new to this hobby a great beginner book. Good recipes a must have for this hobby.
- Alicia's book is up-to-date, modern, and stresses safe soapmaking methods that WORK. Everything from basic melt and pour, basic cold process, laundry soap, geode soaps, pretty much anything you can think of are covered in this thoughtful, easy to follow volume. Whenever someone asks me to recommend a book to get started soaping, THIS is the one I suggest.
- I love this book. In our house it is considered the Soap Bible. Everything you need to know and more is between these two covers. Recipes, step by step instructions on the actual soapmaking process, a list of common essential oils to use along with medicinal and other propeties (including approx. price ranges for each), tips on packing, wrappers, and making gift sets.
This is the only book you'll need.

5 comments about Fabric Glossary (4th Edition).
- I was a little disappointed that all of the pictures were blackand white. In order for this book to be useful to me, I would have topay [approx. $20.] plus shipping and handling to get the actual swatches used in this reference book.
The text seemed to be very thorough and all fabric types are covered. For the price, I would have expected color photos of the swatches since it is difficult to judge texture from black and white. If you don't mind investing [more money] for the swatches, you'll be happy with this book.
- Fantastic book! One that is extremely useful and one that I take everywhere with me. Perfect for new designers acquiring fabric sense. I know several firms where this book is a staple reference guide. A+++++
- I received this book in a timely manner and it's in great condition. thanks.
- It has places to attach sample of fabric so you can feel, touch, and learn about them. It is organized alphabetically which is nice if you know what fabric you are looking for. It should have an extra source to look up by the weave of fabric.
- Okay. Remember those old sticker books? This is sort of like that, one swatch of fabric at a time, except you're not licking them...Sound tedious? Sort of, but the process of putting the swatches on the correct pages/descriptions is great tactile exercise. This is a good reference, and the suggested uses will help to keep you from making a really bad choice for a given project. A drawback to this book is that it gets a huge bulge in the middle, making it difficult to shelve or stack with other books and materials.

5 comments about The Joy of Chemistry: The Amazing Science of Familiar Things.
- Lots of explanations, and simple experiments for a basic chemistry primer.
- While laced with humor, this is a very serious book, and truly a joy. What most surprised me is its willingness to tackle in some fashion all the deepest theoretical findings and issues. They may simplify, but are careful never to misstate. In comparing the dual nature of light, wave and particle, to a pet cat, both wild (when stalking birds) and domestic, the authors are less scientific than usual, but even this analogy contributes to understanding. Given my own confusion, I was glad to learn that "no one has completely explained" why a moving current causes magnetism. The authors do a really good job with chemical attraction, and explain that "all bonds have a bit of each quality - covalent, ionic and metallic - to a greater or lesser degree". I did find some of the references to entropy in explanations a bit unsatisfying, and I think it is because the authors were trying to avoid any discussion of probability.
There is a wealth of information. Despite having taken chemistry, years ago, I learned for the first time such things as what distinguishes a diesel engine, and how cheese is made. I did not actually do any of the many experiments described, but got a lot out of just reading about them. "The Joy of Chemistry" is a great book for anyone interested in science, whether or not you have ever taken a chemistry course.
- The big three sciences are biology, chemistry and physics, although an argument could be made that biology is merely a sophisticated type of chemistry and chemistry merely an extension of physics. All three are important, but when it comes to writing for the general reader, physics and biology seem to get the bigger slices of the publishing pie (especially when extending into subcategories like ecology or astronomy). The Joy of Chemistry, however, addresses this deficiency and offers a good introduction for the lay reader for this central science.
The focus on The Joy of Chemistry is not only on theory but how chemistry fits into the real world. For this reason, writers Cathy Cobb and Monty Fetterolf not only offer real-life illustrations but also provide experiments for the reader to try out. For example, an early chapter on the periodic table is preceded by the recipe for an experiment that exposes copper and aluminum wire to lye to show how two different metals react to a chemical. Then the chapter itself discusses the table and how it is derived, and how certain groups have similar chemical reactions; since copper and aluminum are not in the same group, they react differently.
The majority of the book deals with the ways chemistry works, from reactions to solutions to crystallization. The second portion of the book discusses various types of chemistry, including organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry and analytical chemistry.
Even if you're not inclined to do the experiments (I wasn't), there is still plenty of good, informative material in this book. There are little mistakes here and there such as one point where the text states that two like magnetic poles attract each other, but overall, there aren't many flaws. If your knowledge of chemistry is weak - or if you're just looking for a refresher - The Joy of Chemistry will be a good resource.
- I bought the book to find some interesting points in teaching kids chemistry in elementary school. Didn't really help me. Nothing new. I wouldn't really recommend it.
- Can't say enough about this book. Projects were great fun and very instructive. Learned so much about chemistry. A must read for anyone interested in the subject.

3 comments about SAT Subject Test in Chemistry (Barron's How to Prepare for the SAT).
- Again Barrons keeps to its style of writing review books that are somewhat more difficult than the actual test. Overall I think they have a good book here. Unfortunately there are some noticeable typos, wrong answers in practice exams and that sort of thing. However if you are decent, they won't be a problem and you'll benefit from the 4 practice exams in the book.
- I paid about $12.00 for this book. But when I started doing some exercises in the book, I found out a few mistakes. I was confused. It did not help me a lot. I was not sure if it was the real Barron's book.I appreciated the fast shipping.
- I'd expect Barrons of all books to be perfect. Not the case with this one. LOTS of mistakes. (For example, said hydrogen bonding was very weak) Does not go over the material thoroughly enough. Get the new Kaplan one.

5 comments about Russian Textiles: Printed Cloth for the Bazaars of Central Asia.
- This book is not only visually stunning, it is also a fascinating read. This is the first time that these beautiful and unusual fabrics have been given their due recognition both as designs and as an important part of Russian/Soviet history.
- This book is stunning in a visual sense. Each print illustrates the creative choices of the Central Asian people and also reflect the influences of the world around them. More than a book reviewing Russian textiles, it records the history of a region of the world that is not commonly explored. So beautifully photographed, one can almost feel the weave of the prints. Cloth is so commonplace we take its history for granted. This book reminds us its importance. Its interesting that a swatch of fabric can weave a story of time and people.
- while this extravagantly illustrated compilation of Russian printed fabrics from 1900 to 1950 will be invaluable to both artist and collector, it is a visual delight to the general reader as well. The author skilfully weaves the history of the Cental Asian tribal peoples into the tapestry of mass migration and technology which produced stunning roller and block-printed cotton clothing.
- As a collector of, and dealer in Central Asian garments, I have long been fascinated by the printed, cotton linings of these garments. Some of the fabrics are so beautiful, that my customers turn the coats inside out, and wear them in reverse. How delightful to find a book on these fabrics. The book shows many different patterns of fabric, as well as a number of coats, turned inside out, to show the wonderful patchwork patterns. Well done.
- I wish there was a 6 star rate!
Love the quality (overall!) of the book! Amazong for inspiration!! This one goes on my special-favorite book rack!!!!
