5 comments about Study Guide and Solutions Manual for Organic Chemistry.
- I feel that this book is fine for a reference to the text book problems. The only complaint is that going through nearly the first half of the book, I have found a few minor typos.
- I bought this book along with the Bruice text for the organic class I'm taking right now. A solutions manual is indispensable for checking the answers to the problems you do - so I was going to buy the book anyway. Problem is, it looks like this solutions manual is the solutions manual for the 5th editon, only with a new cover so it looks like it's for the 6th edition. This would be fine, except that the problems in the 5th edition are not the same problems used in the 6th edition. I'd say that 90% of the time, the solutions manual is right - but is 90% good enough for people who are trying to learn the subject, and just end up getting more confused by a solutions manual with solutions for the wrong problem?? I think the publisher should offer a correct copy free to anyone who shelled out $88 for this book.
- I benefited from this book immensely. If you are taking this class do yourself a big favor and buy it. If you are going to do something do it right and working the problems is the key. I got it for around 30$.
- The book arrived faster than the quoted time and it was in great condition. The inside had no markings and the cover was not damaged in any way. Would buy from this seller again.
- I received an A in this class, and it was a lot of hard work. It would've been impossible without this solutions manual! In addition to giving all the answers and a brief explanations for some of them, each chapter has a small quiz at the end which are great study tools. Also there is some vocab at the beginning of each chapter which always seemed to find its way into my exams! I have not given this manual five stars because there were some errors and inconsistencies between the questions in the textbook and the answers in the manual. And I'm not talking about different editions, but rather just plain old mistakes. Like another reviewer said, they need a better editor.

5 comments about Solutions Manual to accompany Organic Chemistry.
- This book accompanies Francis Carey's Organic Chemistry Textbook. It includes solutions to all of text problems and the solutions are worked out well to allow the student to understand the thought process involved in solving them. Truely, a thorogh solutions manuel!
- This book is absolutely indispensable for your study of Organic Chemistry. I am a student of Dr. Atkins and am glad other people can learn from him through this manual. Not only does each answer have a detailed explaination of the answer, but also each chapter has a self-test of about 30 questions (answers in the back). Note that the text by Carey has the answers to the questions in each chapter (about 1/3 of the total questions in the book), but he does not include end-of-chapter questions' answers or anything but just the answer (as opposed to Atkin's details).
Absolutely fabulous!
- This book is excellent. It gives step by step details as of to how the answers were achieved. Also, after each chapter there is a self test that you can take to boost your Organic Chem. IQ. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about learning Organic Chemistry.
- It is the best solution manual I've ever used. It has all the answers and test samples. It's best.
- Wow. I have never seen a solutions manual as amazing as this one! There are answers and explinations to every question in the book.. This means not just odds, not just evens, but both! On top of that, it also has answers and explinations on all example problems throughout the chapters! As if that weren't enough, they also have tests at the end of each chapter and a "final exam" at the end of the book to test your knowledge of the information. It is the MOST in depth solutions manual I have ever seen. Definitely spend your money on this. It's more than worth it!

- This book clearly teaches one how to do organic chemistry. I got an A in Organic Chemistry, but if I didn't have this book I would have failed. This book explains everything the professor didn't. It has a great study guide solutions manual, which gives details to the answers of all the problems.
- I'm currently teaching a two semester organic chem course using professor Smith's book. In my opinion this is the best organic text currently available. The book and the accompanying solutions manual are almost totally free of typographical and conceptual errors. The organization and presentation are done with marvelous clarity; the book is visually beautiful; and the author communicates her enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject in every chapter. My only minor criticism: I'd like to see a little more historical perspective and acknowledgement of the contributions of the 19th and early 20th century giants who created organic chemisty.
- Several sample problems are worked out in every chapter after each new concept to illustrate the material covered. They are all very clearly explained.
In addition, there are also more than enough problems at the end of each chapter to help students better understand the topics covered, however the answers are not provided in the back of the textbook (this is precisely why the solutions manual is a must buy).
I have worked all the problems presented from chapter 1 to chapter 21 (to include the end of chapter problems), and I have encountered only two or three "bad problems" for which the answers were not explained clearly. Almost every answer to every problem is clearly illustrated - some concepts are even better explained in the solutions manual than in the textbook!
I'd wish the buyer good luck in this class, but I doubt any disciplined, devoted student would need it after using this text with the solution manual.
- As Organic Chem. books go, this is the best one I ever got. It is also the only one I own, but that doesn't matter.
- This is a very good basic text for organic chemistry, one of the newest ones out there. I liked the order in which topics were presented but others liked an older text better. The student solutions manual and study guide are a must.

- Item was delivered quickly and in very good condition. No problems were experienced. Good job and thanks.
- I just took a class that required this textbook, and I used the 6th edition instead of the 7th, and there was only one difference.... in the 6th edition, 2 topics were seperated into 2 different chapters, and in the 7th the two topics were combined into one chapter... If your a student and need this book for class, save yourself some money and buy the 6th edition. The word and homework problems are identical.
- The explanations and reasoning behind doing certain procedures and calculations in this book is outstandingly good (most of the time). Each chapter provides detailed workthroughs of problems with easy to understand explanations and in a wide enough variety of ways for one to be able to do most of the problems in the back of the chapter without TOO much trouble. The life saver though is the separate optional solutions manual which provides ALL of the answers (even stepwise) to the chapter problems (GET THIS BOOK!). The chapters involving instrumental analysis could use some improvement in clarity, but the other chapters are very well written.
- So, you're considering either buying or adopting this text for intro analytical chemistry? Good choice!
This is the easiest, most straightforward, book on the market for students. It's been that way through many editions. It was a breath of fresh air (in comparison to Skoog) when it was first published.
Your other choices are "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry" by Skoog et al.(ISBN 0534417965) and "Analytical Chemistry" by Gary D. Christian (ISBN 0471214728). Can also use the book by Day & Underwood.
Skoog is good it's just that he can't match Harris for clarity.
Christian doesn't change much. The end-of-chapter problems are usually just re-numbered. It's OK, though.
Fortunately, whichever you choose, none can be considered deficient.
One thing I don't like about these books: Why do they include all this material on instrumental analysis? The advanced/Instrumental texts do a much better job with these topics anyway. The extra chapters make the intro books needlessly heavy.
The first course analytical books should just stick to the basics like acid/base/complexometric/redox titrations, gravimetric analysis, sample prep., extractions, etc.
----------------------------------------------------
Daniel Harris (along with Bertolucci) has also written a true classic in the field of molecular spectroscopy: "Symmetry and Spectroscopy: An Introduction to Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy". Get that too for your advanced phys chem courses.
Check out my other reviews for other chem books
- This review refers to the fourth edition of this book.
I bought this book at the Stanford University Bookstore as a reference text for quantitative analytical chemistry. Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book which covers all the fundamentals of the subject. It also contains a great deal of useful data. The editing is excellent (I didn't notice any typos) and so are the graphics (tables, charts, pictures).
Mind you, this subject is so big that only a small fraction can be covered even in a large tome like this. But the author has used the space available to him well.
I note that the reviewers who do not like this book seem to be students while those who love it are teachers or experienced engineers (like myself). I suppose that means that the author is assuming a certian level of knowledge on the part of his readers and is not spending a large amount of time explaining basic concepts.

5 comments about Prentice Hall Molecular Model Set For Organic Chemistry.
- This is a kind of awkward model set. It does what its supposed to but the length of the plastic bonds is hard to differentiate to tell between the different types of bonds. Also, I did not find it that helpful to studying like I thought it would be. I would say save your money and buy study guides with gobs and gobs of practice problems.
- This product was a good buy but it could have had a few extra pieces to make longer chains of molecules. It also had too few carbon molecules beads which is the back bone of many molecules.
- If you are having trouble mentally visualizing how organic molecules' mechanisms work, this will be a valuable tool to have. However, if you are doing fine just visualizing it in your head, then i suggest you just skip this kit.
- I was all in all very satisfied. The product was in perfect condition when arrived and accurate in description. Shipping was fairly timely. Very good!
- I needed this for an organic chemistry class, but wanted the set to play with too. Amazon had a better price than the bookstore, and it qualified for the super saver shipping since the kit is distributed by a publishing house.
The connectors are sometimes hard to get apart once you have constructed a molecule, but there is a handy tool to help.
The molecules and connectors are made from a good quality, dense plastic and stand up to some stretching and bending. The booklet that comes with the set is also a helpful in trying to explain some of the basics of organic chemistry.

5 comments about Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition.
- When I took this book for the first time I thought - wow they probably made the well-known Leninger book more illustrated, maybe added something new - let's read it. But from the first chapters I realized - there is nothing left from the original book. There is too much water in this book. You can for example read like 30 pages and then stop and ask yourself - Ok what have I've learned. And the answer is "not too much", because what was written in 30 pages in fact can be written in 5. I recommend the editors to change the name "Leninger - Principles of biochemistry" for something like - "Very general principles of biochemistry". Though I can not tell that the entire book is bad - starting with metabolic pathways I found some new details and information I didn't know about, but in general it was a waste of time and money to buy and read this book.
- Usually required reading for college students, this book was used for undergrad biochem and my pharmacy biochem. Pretty good tome.
- Excellent book! I would recommend this book for any person taking a beginners biochemistry class or just wanting to know more about the subject.
- What I like the most about this book is that it contains almost all the information that you need to understand biochemistry, information that is not traditionally covered in biochemistry books, but that is needed as background to a complete understanding of the subject. For instance, the first chapter of this book gives background information on the biological, chemical, genetics, evolution basis of biochemistry. It explains the cell in enough detail to understand references made to the cell components later on in the textbook. Another thing I found is a detailed explanation of D and L configuration, as opposed as just saying all amino acids found in proteins are L isomers. No other book I've read explains where the L, D configuration convention came from and students usually confuse it with levorotatory and dextrorotatory, when they are different things altogether. It also has an entire chapter dedicated to water chemistry, which serves as both a review and a basis for understanding the importance of hydrogen bonding in biochemistry in later chapters.
In essence, this is a very COMPLETE book, in the sense that it covers material not found in traditional biochemistry books (ex. Berg, Stryer), but that is necessary to understand other aspects of biochemistry. If you are planning to specialize in the study of biochemistry, you definitely want this book as part of your reference collection.
- The book itself was very interesting and a great introduction to biochemistry, however, the shippers are losers. They sent a hardcover, ~20 pound book in a simple envelope even though I spent the extra money for fast, safe delivery. Not only was the book not even sent until 5-6 days after the expected delivery date, the outside of the book was severely damaged when I finally got it. I am wholly dissatisfied with the way they treated me.

5 comments about Organic Chemistry (5th Edition) (Ace Organic Series).
- Received book in 3 days but paid for 2 day service. However, item was exactly what was stated. The one day did not make that big a difference but was a little irritating. Book was great.
- The book arrived faster than the quoted time, and was in great condition. The inside had no markings and the cover was not damaged in any way. Would buy from this seller again.
- I just finished this class last semester. I found this book easy to follow, but I think it could have been arranged better. For instance, I would've started with SN 1/E 1 and SN 2/E 2 reactions first instead of jumping straight into the reactions of alkenes. I would've also appreciated if all of the nomenclature was in one concise chapter. I do appreciate the reaction summaries at the end of every chapter. That was quite useful. I really did not like the chapter on Mass spec, I felt it was lacking. The book also had some errors when it came to the practice problems and the answers in the back of the book. The chapter on stereochemistry was a headache. Do yourself a favor and attend the lecture and skip the chapter.
- Really really loved this book.
One of the best written college textbooks i have read in a long time
1). GOOD examples
2). REALLY thorough. It will cover nearly every topic in the entire ochem spectrum. When i was studying for the MCAT and couldnt find the answer to something all i had to do was pop open this book and find out about wolf-kirschner reductionr etc etc.
3). well written
4). easy to understand
Cons
1). really expensive, the solutions manual is really expensive too. Also the modeling kit is really expensive lol.
LOTS OF DOUGH, but if you can afford it its really a great book.
- I had met this book on my undergraduate studies, it was the most interesting and exciting one(compare to other organic chemistry books) I had read on organic chemistry. It is even possible to learn the organic chemistry completely alone without visiting any lectures.
Still as graduate student me and other chemistry students in the university prefer this book in case you need to refresh the basis knowledge in organic chemistry.
