2 comments about Chemical Kinetics & Catalysis.
- Good book for undergrad and grad students who've already had reactor design and p.chem. Much of the theory, in latter half of the book, takes basis from statistical thermo, so p.chem may be useful. As a student w/o such bkgds, overall I find the book to be very clear in explanation. Delivery of material is deliberate and well thought out. Appreciate the use of many example problems. Unfortunately, no solutions for the Problems at end of chapter.
Unfortunately, the book has a ton of mistakes, some simply typos, but some are very critical mistakes in example problems, some of which are very subtle. Overall, content is excellent for a one seeking some applicable information (1st half), and those seeking more theoretical treatment (2nd half).
- This book does a good job of explaining the basis for reaction mechanisms and how catalysts work. The technical level of this book requires students to have at least a couple of advanced chemistry classes, such as physical chemistry, in their background. In summary, buy this book if you are looking to expand your understanding of chemical reactions and have a solid understanding of the basic chemistry principles.

2 comments about Six-Minute Solutions For Chemical PE Exam Problems.
- This little book is bigger than what meets the eye. Excersices are practical and explanations are very detailed. Anyone involved in Chemical Engineering practice should have one, at least to practice a few exercises to keep your engineering knowledge sharp. Consider it a chemical engineer "quick mental fitness manual".
- I just took the PE exam (earlier today) and I used the six-minute solutions in my study prep. I have some pro's and cons.
Pros:
1. It covers the most of topics you will find on the exam.
2. The solutions work through the problems thoroughly and also explain why the incorrect answers are incorrect.
3. The problems are formatted like the test: multiply choice, one scenario per question. some of the other sample test will describe a scenario and then ask several questions that build on one another.
4. If you can blow through these problems you will not have any issues the the real thing.
Cons:
1. Errors. The are at least 12 errors in the scenarios and the solutions. Make sure you download the errata off the ppi website before you start or you be pulling your hair out.
2. The problems are much more difficult than what you see in the exam. Some of the solutions take 2+ pages (4 columns) of type written calculations! Six-minutes my arse. Don't be surprised if you send 45-60 minutes on a problem. They have problems that include several iterations and large amounts of calculations. There is even one extraction problem that they construct a to-scale graphical solution to determine number of stages. You will NOT see this on the test.
Bottom line: I recommend getting this as a part of your study materials. I was able work through all of the problems eventually, but don't let the difficulty of the problems get you down. The real test is not involved. Get the NCEES practice exam and use it as your timed trial test.
I definately recommend the Michael Lindeburg series of books especially the Reference Manual.

2 comments about The Bases of Chemical Thermodynamics: Volume 2.
- This book explains the fundamentals of thermodynamics in a very clear way. Starting from the first and second Laws, it guides you through the problems of pure substances and mixtures, the thermodynamics of perfect and real gases and finally the equilibrium between phases. Every equation is derived precisely but also explained by texts or figures to help the reader understand the idea hidden between the math. Every chapter is followed by numerous problems that allow to understand how the concepts derived theoretically can be applied to real chemical systems.
With the second volume, those two books are an excellent learning material for any chemistry student, but also Ph.D., who wants to understand anything in chemical thermodynamics.
- This is a easily readable book, for people who wan't to learn about thermodynamics. The steps to understand fully the basic notions are realy simple to follow and the mathematical equasions follow well without jumping big steps, as other books usualy do... as if the other authors didn't quite get the formulas themselves.
Mr Infelta & Grätzel realy put excellent effort in realizing these books.

1 comments about Biosignal and Biomedical Image Processing: MATLAB-Based Applications (Signal Processing and Communications, 22).
- This book assumes that you have both a prior knowledge of Matlab and of signal processing concepts. It spends the first three chapters going over measurement and transducer systems, basic signals and systems, and classical methods of spectral analysis. Even though these chapters are meant to be a quick review, there are some Matlab implementations of basic algorithms in each chapter. Chapter four introduces digital filters and shows Matlab implementations of both IIR and FIR filters. A special treat of chapter four is that some time is spent introducing the reader to the Matab signal processing toolkit. Now that the basics of digital filtering have been introduced, more advanced signal processing techniques are tackled. These include modern methods of spectral analysis and also time-frequency analysis using such methods as the Wigner-Ville distribution. Again, in all cases, the equations are concise, the prose is very accessible, and all concepts are demonstrated using Matlab programs. There is a separate chapter devoted to the wavelet transform and to its use in filter banks, denoising, and feature detection. Quite frankly, I found this chapter far more accessible than entire books that have been devoted to the subject, especially if you are interested in getting to the heart of the matter and using wavelets to perform a task. Two more chapters round out the section of the book on general signal processing techniques- one is about adaptive filters and another on principal component analysis. The final four chapters of the book concern themselves with image processing and Matlab, and the Matlab image processing toolkit in particular. You should already be familiar with the basic concepts behind image processing, and as with the signal processing portion of this book, the point is to have a single text with all of the relevant signal processing techniques briefly described along with Matlab code for the purpose of biosignal processing. However, even if you are not a biomedical engineer, and I am not, you should find this book helpful in the general sense of producing implementations of signal processing concepts. This book would also be helpful for biometric professionals since it goes into great detail on how to turn biological features into measurements that can be processed and compared.

2 comments about Advanced Transport Phenomena.
- Transport Phenomena is a traditionally hard-subject in every curriculum related to unit operations in chemical engineering. Its difficult because of its mathematical basis, and moreover, by the lack of practical insight. The appendices and first chapters depicts the major mathematical foundations. Separated subjects (momentum, energy and mass transfer) makes easy to the reader just getting what he needs. Focusing on problem solving, shows the way previous knowledge integrates a new approach: governing laws, math techniques, effects of geometry and scale, time dependent processes and averaging techniques. definitely, this book is an obliged read to whom really likes engineering.
- This is an amazing text for those looking for an advanced treatise to transport phenomena.
