4 comments about Lore of Still Building.
- The Lore of Still Building seems to be the granddaddy of all the still building books. It's written in plain simple english and yet it's almost a technical source book. If you aren't interested in the "whys" and "wherefores" you can simply skip those chapters and start building your project the day you get the book. It's a book with all the facts mixed in with some good humor. The Alaskan Bootlegger's Bible is an OK book too, but it has too many "giggly" homespun stories for my taste --and using corncobs for ANYTHING related to distilling is going to yield fusel oil as well as alcohol. Ugh! The "Lore" may be a granddaddy but it's a wise granddaddy that doesn't bore you to death with old wive's tales. And I'm almost an "ol' wife" myself!
- This is the only book I've read on this subject but it
answered all my questions and more. The authors do a
tremendous
job. There's even a chapter on how to make your own
"gasohol". Corn
farmers ought to like that.
- This book is a simple how-to book for the home do-it-your-self novice brewer. The types of wine you can make was of most interest to me. Great ideas. And, of course, if you want to make ILLEGAL whisky, he gives you enought ideas to take off. Great, simple methods book.
- I bought this book because I was interested in ethanol fuel production. A portion of it is dedicated to beverage production. The information on the mechanics of the still are poor. The technical information about the chemical process of ethanol production are pretty good. Being no chemist I have to rely on my common sense and how good the author communicates technical info into layman's terms. He does a good job of that.
There are lots of stupid little cartoons that don't need to be in the book. It would be a good publication had it more detailed photographs, and good pictures of a functional reflux still.
It's too bad that everyone with any sort of information is not willing to share it without a monetary exchange. Everyone wants to get rich on the internet. I was just looking for some good information on a still. I've read varing reviews on a major source selling plans for a reflux still. Some say the plans are vague, other say it's ok. I just wanted a good book on the whole process. Is it worth $11.95 plus shipping? Maybe, but I think this book is a little overblown.

3 comments about Computer Simulation of Liquids.
- It's the book to have if you want to learn computer simulation. It covers both Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics, from the start for the beginner. It also includes more advanced topics, but is definitely focused on studying fluids and not solids. The code is written in Fortran. If you program in C I suggest Rapaport's book, but this one is a definite must read.
- It is a good book in general, but i feel it assumes an intermediate to advanced level of knowledge of the subject.
Quite often the explanations are not elaborate enough to understand the method discussed. A slightly more elaborate treatment would make this a first rate book.
- One of the most influential books on MD and MC, a little outdated by the year, a second edition would be welcome.

5 comments about Vim & Vinegar: Moisten Cakes, Eliminate Grease, Remove Stains, Kill Weeds, Clean Pots & Pans, Soften Laundry, Unclog Drains, Control Dandruff, Season Salads.
- I bought this book for the purpose of making home-made(safer than store-bought) cleansers. Most of her cleaning recipes call for ammonia-which is not good for your health. It talks about how to make different vinegars, which is acceptable although I don't think I would make my own. But I do not understand why she included food recipes that call for some(2-3tbs) vinegar.(Sloppy Joes, BBQ hamburger, etc) There are plenty other cookbooks for these types of recipes.
- "Mom knew - vinegar is magic. It makes chocolate cakes fluffier, candy tastier, windows more sparkling, even socks whiter. This book tells all there is to know about using vinegar for better gardening, cleaning, health, and, of course, cooking." (reviewed by Carol Garriott)
- the book was well written and had all the info. i was looking for.
- You could not imagine all the helpful things vinegar can be used for. Go check it out, order the book. Totally AWESOME!
- Of particular interest in this book is the non-toxic way to unclog drains. This is a "green" book with counless ways offered for cleaning around the house and yard, as well as doing your laundry without using harmful chemicals (earth friendly, kid friendly). Every household should have a copy of this book!!

3 comments about Introduction to Environmental Engineering.
- The book is very helpful to me in my job. It serves as a very helpful reference material, just short of a handbook. It provides clear and concise explanations on topics you need to know. Even layman, with a minimal technical background, can easily understand the terms and concepts.
- Told me when they shipped and when to expect it, and the book came at the earliest ship date.
- I admired the integrity of this transaction. they do not usuall come like this in many instances. I am a first time Amazon user and I like the way it goes.
Thank You

5 comments about Essentially Soap: The Elegant Art of Handmade Soap Making, Scenting, Coloring & Shaping.
- I had to have a friend who is very good with math teach me how to figure INS values. (Math major I am not.) If you like math and are very scientific about soap you'll like them. I am sure INS values would gaurd you from making a bad batch, but it boggled me a bit.
I am a hot process soaper and this book was not helpful for perfecting hot process. The recipes are well balanced and you won't go wrong there, but I am going to buy the soapmaker's companion next. (I have Milk-Based soaps also.)I just don't think any one book will give you it all. Soap making methods are very personal and I suggest you buy several books and take what you like from them and leave the rest. Soap making is after all very personal and Dr. Bob has given a good take on his personal niche with soap. With some exploration each soaper can find theirs.
- I am a veteran soapmaker and really enjoyed this book.
- Overall, as a beginner, I enjoyed this book and appreciated a lot of his explanations and directions. I found his explanation of the math/calculation portion a little confusing, however. His step by step soap making was nice. I wish he would have explained different methods of coloring soap a little more. I am interested in making herbal soaps as natural as possible, and this book has helped me to get a basic idea. He goes over melt and pour in a brief overview, and I was glad he didn't spend too much time on it. He teaches the cold process method. I plan to find books that teach hot process next. This book is recommended for beginners.
- Dr. McDaniel's book is a great reference for those who are seasoned soapers as well as beginners looking for an introduction. One of the reasons this book is superior to others is the fact that the photos are instructional as opposed to decorative. For example, on page 57, he has wonderful photos demonstrating what trace looks like and how it behaves. I LOVED that because trace was the most elusive thing for me. People described it till they were blue in the face and I still didn't get it. It wasn't till I saw the photo that the "Aha!" moment came.
The recipes that he features are a mixed bag. There are the simple ones for beginners, cheap ones for us misers, luxurious ones for the fancy folks, facial soaps, shampoos, milk soaps, and even pet shampoos! Also included is a SAP table complete with KOH values and INS values, directions on how to use it, how to calculate water for your own recipes. It also includes directions on how to rebatch soap and of course, the obligatory melt-and-pours. What I found fascinating was the directions on how to make your own potash and how to make your own essential oils. This guy really goes over how to make everything. For those of us interested in learning about the soapmaking process from scratch, this book is indispensible!
On top of all the good information, you really feel like the author has a deep understanding of the subject. The only thing I would change, if I could, is I would ask Dr. McDaniel to also include information on hot process soap making. He covered everything else, I wondered why he didn't at least provide a cursory explaination of the process.
All in all, if you can only get ONE book on soapmaking, this is it.(Though how could you possibly just get one? Who has that much will power?)
- I'm new to soapmaking and have taken 1 class on it. I'm obsessed with this new art and have poured thru 6 books in 4 days I love it so much! I can tell you this book was one that I got from the library (but will own soon!) and it's a MUST HAVE! It's informational more than a book of recipes but it's very clear and one I will refer to always. Don't get me wrong, the recipes are great but they are for 4 lb batches which seem a bit big for me right now (2 solo soap adventures so far)....very new. The other must have book with 2lb recipes is "Smart Soapmaking" by Anne L. Watson! YOU have to have this book in your soap library!

1 comments about The Romantic Male Nude.
- The Romantic Male Nude is pretty much what the name implies, with about 200 photographs from 41 different photographers of men in various poses. Other than the brief forwards at the beginning of the book and the photographer credits at the end, there is little other writing, and the book stands purely on the beautiful images contained within.
The photos are broken into several main categories - 'youthful yearning', 'romantic men', 'al fresco', etc, although the editors have done a great job in putting together a collection that remains consistent throughout. The photos explore the romanticized male form, and so rather than capturing the erotic, the men are mostly posed in a fashion that shows off their bodies without delving into the tacky. There is a quiet innocence to these men, with a slight air of sadness about them, and the overall mood of the collection is much more powerful that similar books.
The subjects tend to be well-built and muscular, and I'd guess most of them are in the 22-30 age group. This is a nice departure from the overly-thin twinks that are often photographed in books like this. If I had to put these guys into a category, I'd say they could live in the Abercrombie & Fitch universe, but they'd probably hang out with a smarter and less annoying crowd than the dumb boys in the advertisements.
Because this collection runs to the artistic more than the erotic, the photos tend to emphasize muscles and builds in poses similar to Michelangelo's 'David', and the allure of 200 hundred 'Davids' assembled together is powerful. The pictures are about 70% black and white and 30% color, and the large format of the book is nice since most photos are 8x6 or 8x8, with a few larger spreads.
The collection does not shy away from full-frontal nudity either, which sets it apart. Around half the photos capture the full frontal male form, although being about romance more than sex, only one or two images portray men in an aroused state. About 80% of the photos are of single subjects, with the remaining being of two men together. Of those, most portray the men hugging or embracing, and most duo shots do not show full frontal nudity.
Overall, this is a beautiful collection of sexy men. It's not designed to be eroticism, but it is arousing. For those who enjoy artistic nudes and the romanticized ideal male form, this is a great addition to any collection.

2 comments about Bioseparations Science and Engineering (Topics in Chemical Engineering (Oxford University Press).).
- I'm glad I found this book !!! Unlike many other books of similar titles, this is one that I can really understand. Not too heavy dosage of biological terms. Provides good linkage between the biological science and engineering applications. Good for students who had chemical engineering backgrounds and wanted to venture into bioseparaions. The addional chapter on plant design and economics is also very beneficial.
- I used Dr. Harrison's manuscript of this text while taking his bioseparations course at OU. It is an excellent text and can really give you an edge on bioseparations science!

2 comments about Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice.
- This is the seminal reference on the widely invoked "12 Principles of Green Chemistry." This book is written by cofounders of the EPA Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award,": a Synthetic Chemist and an expert in Environmental Policy. This book is unique in delivering a broad purview of industry practices as it pertains to the environment in a succinct manner. This is enabled by the distillation of the "12 Principles" which is an excellent organizing scheme. A key finding is the interdependency of the Principles and how they drive improved business performance for adopters.
"The 12 Principles of Green Chemistry" is invoked as a mantra for a revolution in the practice and methodologies of synthetic chemistry by research centers and innovators throughout the world. Driving even a few of these principles into practice has become a furtive source of product and process innovations in the field. The text is often cited in technical papers and thus a key reference book. The narrative is accessible while providing rich examples ripe for follow-up investigation by technical readers. As a technology strategist I highly recommend "Green Chemistry: Theory and Practice" for its insight regarding the drivers of the future development of the chemical and materials industries.
