3 comments about Medical Statistics at a Glance, Second Edition (At a Glance).
- This is a decent review of medical stats and is geared towards those who want a general understanding of what tests to use in what situations. If that's what you want than this is a decent one to check out. If you are looking for mathematical proofs and complete explainations or statistical theories than this is the wrong book to get since it has none of that. Sometimes it is a little too concise and gets confusing (I knew very little about medical stats when I first got this and had to use other sources on a few subjects). There are good examples in each chapter (which are usually about 2 pages each) that help explain the concepts as well.
- This is one of my favorite statistical references and I always have it close at hand. Many times I am just looking for a brief and concise overview of a statistical topic that I don't know that well and I use this text as one of my starting points, or I may use it as a quick refresher. It's often a good starting point and a nice bridge to statistical texts, or software statistical manuals, that provide more detail. I would recommend this text to anyone interested in statistics in healthcare / pharma.
- This is an excellent introductory text for anyone wishing to learn the principles of medical statistics through self-study.

5 comments about Foundations of Clinical Research: Applications toPractice (2nd Edition) (Foundations Of Clinical Research).
- This book is just incredibly good!!! It combined details with cool simplicity. A must have for researchers.
- This is a book that I have used often through my graduate career. It served as a great textbook for a course I was taking and as supplementary material for other other courses on Statistics, Design and Research Methods.
Well-organized and easy-to-read, it has become my first line-of-defense for all things related to research design. It covers the material in adequate detail so you have a good jumping off point in case you need to grab your SAS manual or your Stats text.
- Although I have used this text as a reference (vs. reading it all the way through, or for a class) I have found myself returning to it often. In fact, I purchased it only because I had started to wear out the copy I had borrowed from a friend...and she was missing it because she used it frequently, too. The best aspect of this text is the way the authors use examples relevant to clinical research for nearly every statistical decision. No more extrapolating from educational research, medical research...I don't usually have that much imagination! Good book.
- This is one of the basic book to clinical pactitioners. is very simple to apply the criteria and is very clear to novice researchers.
- While the delivery took a little longer than I anticipated, the book I ordered was in excellent condition. Would buy from this vendor again. Thanks!

5 comments about How to Report Statistics in Medicine: Annotated Guidelines for Authors, Editors, and Reviewers.
- As a medical writer and editor at The Cleveland Clinic, Thomas A. Lang found that the lack of clear understanding of statistics by non-statisticians affected the clarity of their writing. Physicians had the same problem while writing up their research papers for publication. Lang perceived a need among medical and science writers to understand just enough of biostatistics to make them better writers and editors without becoming statisticians themselves. He devised workshops that were conducted by the American Medical Writers Association which were enormously successful. The logical next step was to write this book based on the valuable teaching experience and feedback he got at those courses. In other words, this is a book that wasn't written in a vacuum but is the result of a perceived need, and the author's experience in meeting that need. Co-author Michelle Secic has also contributed with her expertise, making it a valuable book for people in this field.
- I am glad to read this book before I prepared for my statistical clinical studies. This book could give you basic ideas, but you need to discuss with your collegues or use more advanced books to improve further.
- The material is presented in a way that will help medical writers understand clinical trials more fully, and answer questions that come while writing.
- This is the best reference book I have found on the topic of how to present data for manuscripts to be submitted to peer-reviewed journals. It is easy to use, super easy to understand, and covers all elements of the manuscript preparation process as far as data representation is concerned. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a book on the subject. It includes many examples of data tables, figures, and even examples of how to write up titles and data descriptions.
- I found this book unexpectedly useful, complete and easy to read. It contains the kind of statistical knowledge that medical people do like to see. It is not another textbook that reviews medical statistics. However it provides the clues to understand and classify all these statistical jargon and processes that cause difficulties to eveybody that loves to handle statistics himself.I fully recommend it

2 comments about Infectious Disease Epidemiology: Theory And Practice.
- This text is an excellent textbook for both infectious disease professionals and for students of infectious disease epidemiology. Nelson and colleagues cover a range of essential topics from a survey of important historical epidemics to study designs for infectious disease investigations. The first part of the text covers ID epidemiology background and methodology, whereas the second focuses on specific diseases as examples of different transmission modalities. TB, HIV and Influenza are among the pathogens discussed in great detail. Chapters are written by experts in their respective fields, making this textbook not only authoritative, but also up-to-date in scope and content. Many of the authors are affiliated with the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health or the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. "Infectious Disease Epidemiology" is extremely readable, and serves as an excellent reference tool. I highly recommend it.
- I am pleased with my recent purchase. The book is in excellent condition and I was able to save 75% off what my university bookstore's selling price!

- This book explains statistics in an entertaining way, altough, you must need to know some math to understand it better, the way the authors write is funny and is good for learning and teaching at the same time.

3 comments about Health Measurement Scales: A Practical Guide to Their Development and Use (Oxford Medical Publications).
- This is undoubtedly, one of the best books I have read in this area. The authors follow an appropriate sequence in terms of addressing scale development, testing and analyses issues. The best thing about the book is that it is really easy to comprehend and covers all the important areas. I feel it is a "must buy" for professionals in the area of health-related quality of life and outcomes research.
- This book is definally the best one in the field, it is clear and provides all information about psychometry.
- I really like this book and wish that I'd found out about it before my psychometrics class in the spring started, because I would have assigned it in a heartbeat. It's got a lot of the kind of practical advice that anyone thinking of creating a scale REALLY needs to hear first, including the #1 bit of advice: Should you make one yourself? For instance, excellent summaries of the work on scale usage biases by Jon Krosnick, Norbert Schwartz, etc., give useful cautionary information for scale constructors. I have a few disagreements---some of the advice about procedures such as some of the scaling methods they mention is out of date, for instance, and the chapters on factor analysis and IRT are a bit weak, but I can cover that with other material. It certainly doesn't detract from the value of the book overall and I've learned a bunch I didn't know reading it. It'll be on the syllabus next time!

5 comments about Pdq Statistics (PDQ Series) Third Edition (PDQ).
- I've spent years looking for a book on statistics that is lucid for professionals who need to use statistical methods but who don't want to get a Ph.D. in math to be able to undertand them.
This book is the best. No incomprehensible Greek formulas. No tortured prose. And yet it's not just a mere introduction of what a mode is. It includes some advanced statistical methods and gives you all you need to know to understand what they do and how and when you would use them. It is long enough to describe each method sufficiently, including pitfalls and things to watch out for. Yet the book is short enough that reading it and undertanding the whole thing is possible in a modest length of time. You can stop searching now. This is the book.
- This book is the only statistics book of its type. For each section covering a specific statistical method (from simple methods to those you may not even cover in your PhD training), a concise 2-5 page summary is presented. The goal is not to enable the reader to calculate any of these statistics, but to understand conceptually what each statistic means. This is where it can fill in information other statistics texts never get to. A student (or researcher!) who can churn out factorial ANOVA results, but doesn't truly understand what they mean can turn to this book for clarity. It's simple (for statistics), it's short, it's clear, and you have to love a book that is dedicated "To the many people who have made this book both possible and necessary -- authors of other statistics books"!
- In these times, you can't walk in the streets without hear or read some statistics, in the paper, in the market or everywhere.
This is the book not only for a biomedical student, is a book for anyone interested in know what is statistics about. The politicians and doctor can lie with statistics, but with the knowledge from this book, you can see beyond. The use of examples is extensive, and some of them are hilarious. It's a book very concise, informative and, the best of all, funny.
- I must begin by stating that I didn't receive the book until the week of my exam. :( So, obviously I was not reliant on it. The book is small enough to be "not so" intimidating. It has relevant formulas and explanations to give one the gist of stats needed to pass a biostats class.
My opinion of the book may have been better had the product arrived sooner.
- I have a couple of other fat, authoratative biostats books but PDQ is my reference of choice. If you want to understand biostats, you can't lose with this clever concise text.
