2 comments about Self-Organizing Maps.
- The material is presented clearly and comprehensively from the unique perspective of the SOM originator himself. The inclusion of exhaustive references is particularly useful for the prospective researcher, but, at the risk of sounding ungrateful, I'm curious as to why paper titles were not included in the citations? Overall though, a very good reference.
- This is a wonderfully written, and excellent book. It assumes only minimal background knowledge but imparts a great deal of insight. I love the way that the author describes this area and the connections with deep and beautiful mathematics.

2 comments about Atomic Force Microscopy for Biologists.
- "Atomic Force Microscopy for Biologists" is an excellent introduction for anybody wishing to enter this field. Nearly all aspects are covered. The book opens with an overview of the theory behind Atomic Force Microscopy and the different modes of use. This is presented in a concise manner without over-reliance on complex mathematical equations. Unlike many other volumes, practical advice on sample preparation techniques is provided for common systems such as proteins, cells and DNA. A comprehenive review of leading research in this area at the time of publication is sectioned by biomaterial type. Different approaches to imaging are tackled. The text is supported by numerous supporting images.
In summary I would strongly recommend this book to any biologist planning on carrying out research using SPM imaging technqiues and existing users in the field who wish to broaden their knowledge of SPM imaging and the research already carried out n common biological systems.
- Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is one technique in a family of new microscopies called scanning probe microscopies (SPMs) which has recently opened a wide range of novel, fascinating applications for biologists (biochemists, biophysicists, cell biologists, microbiologists,...). This book provides an excellent survey of those applications. It is nicely illustrated with numerous images from leading experts in the field. Clear descriptions of the apparatus and its basic principles are provided in a way accessible to students/scientists that do not have a strong physics background. This book will be useful to biologists, but also non-biologists dealing with biosystems, to evaluate the advantages and limitations of AFM in their specific field and to define appropriate procedures that will lead them to successful experiments.

2 comments about Bioenergetics: The Molecular Basis of Biological Energy Transformations.
- First book I found on the subject. I even didn't know Bioenergetics per se before I found this book. Gosh, I just can not believe how much I learned from this book. It has given the definitive base for my concepion of the Universe. It is as readable and enjoyable as a novel or any kind of literature. I think it has influenced me more as a human being than as a Chemistry student. As also an Anthropology student, I found this book impactating. Well, I'll say it again, I just can not believe how much I have learned from this book.
- This little book explains what was known when it was written
(1971) about how energy can be stored in molecules like glucose
and adenosine triphosphate (ATP, the universal energy carrying
molecule in living cells) and released again later to power those
processes in the cell that require energy input in order to
proceed. The author was one of the leaders in research in
understanding the thermodynamics of biochemical reactions. Its
major topics include:
- Overall energy flow, from sun to plants to animals and to final
dissipation as heat.
- Thermodynamics and the nature of "free energy".
- ATP. The explanation of what exactly is a "high energy
phosphate bond" and why energy is released when it is
hydrolyzed is the clearest I have seen in my limited reading.
- Photosynthesis.
- Biosynthesis, the synthesis of sugars, proteins, lipids and
other biological molecules from simpler precursors.
- Active transport, the "pumping" of ions and molecules against
chemical or electrical gradients.
- Physical motion, especially in muscles.
So long as it is read as a supplement to more contemporary
accounts, I think this is still an interesting book and still
worth reading. I especially liked it for its clear focus on the
issue of energy transfer and its clear presentation of the
meaning of "free energy". Lehninger was one of the "stars" of
biochemistry and, even where his exposition is now seriously out
of date, it is always interesting to follow the thinking of a
fine and educated mind working on a hard and interesting problem.
Of course much has been learned that Lehninger couldn't have
known in 1971. There are places where he says "it is not known
how ...", or "several alternative theories have been postulated
for ...", but now in 2007, we do have definitive explanations for
those unknowns. So _Bioenergetics_ is no longer a cutting edge
book and can no longer be read in the hope of getting an
up-to-date understanding of the biochemical issues involved.
Although the book is old, from my inexpert point of view, it
appears that there were no serious errors in it. The author only
says something is true if the evidence supporting it was strong.
Where something was not well known, the author was very clear
about saying so and, where speculation was indulged in, it was
also clear that he was speculating. You won't learn the latest
results in molecular biology from it, but I think it can be read
without fear of absorbing false theories.
Some background in organic chemistry is desirable in order to
understand the book. A very basic introductory course is
sufficient. Without that the book can still be read and enjoyed,
but it will be hard reading.
I give this book 5 1971 stars. It wouldn't be fair to rate it in
terms of 2007 science, but I think if you've read this far in my
review you'll get the idea of its value.

4 comments about Walk on Water.
- Walk On Water by Leonard G. Horowitz is a remarkable guide to the constructive fundamentals of life. Offering readers an informative perspective on such issues as the "Perfect Circle of Sound" and how the Creator is using it to promote healing for the self in loving service; proof of a "Love frequency" and how to use it; evidence that DNA microscopically mirrors the double helix wave form of the cosmos; the "Miracle frequency" for manifesting matter, and so much more, Walk On Water knowledgeably compiles a complete and thorough explanation of the many phenomenal intricacies of life, and also addresses the profoundly simple meaning of life for optimal and active living. Walk On Water is very highly recommended for anyone searching for a comprehensive and complete guide to the holistic perception of life, love, divinity, the universe.
- This is a must read for anyone who is searching for concept on how life works it begins with oneself
- Walk on Water is a book that is packed with some of the most amazing and wonderful truths of all time. It explains the science behind the power of thoughts, words, prayer, music, and water (yes, water), and galvanizes the reader to really watch what they think and say (and drink).
Most people innately understand that negative thoughts will affect things negatively and positive thoughts will affect things positively, but Dr. Horowitz gives a very sound and clear explanation of why and how that is so in this book. You will learn that when you say a heartfelt "I love you," or "Have a great day" to someone, it really does affect their mind, body, and life in a positive way.
For those of you that have been on the receiving end of a physician's negative diagnosis and experienced the immediate fearful impact on your heart or have a child that has been labeled dyslexic, this book will set you free from those negative labels.
From the tiniest part of a strand of DNA to an atom whirling in the outer reaches of the universe, there is an intelligent, loving design that has humankind's best interests at heart - Walk on Water beautifully and clearly proves this and encourages its readers to take full advantage of these great truths available to them.
- This book has information about the sacred Solfeggio tones. These were supposedly ancient, at least from the time of the Jews. They were hidden and/or suppressed by the Catholic church. The author tells us about the frequencies of these tones and what they are supposed to mean. But what do you do with this stuff?
The book is not really a solid reference so you are unlikely to need to read it twice. There really aren't any exercises here so? So we get to know that the author is an expert on this stuff but what about the rest of us? There is no place to go and nothing to study outside of what is written here. That does not satisfy someone looking for more that just some facts on paper. Ok, he does mention the work of Dr. Emoto to make use feel good about loving ourselves. But beyond that not much else to work with here.
My advice, get the CD on the Solfeggio tones themselves. If you are involved in any type of alternative (energy) healing then save up some money and get a set of tuning forks made to this frequency. Then you can find out what they can do.
