5 comments about Molecular Spectroscopy.
- One of the few textbooks I have encountered which I consider well written from a both a scientific and a stylistic perspective. Jeanne McHale provides the clearest, most coherent presentation of the book's topic that I have seen. If the reader is encountering the material for the first time, I'd suggest using this book in conjunction with another, as there are details which are skimmed over here in the interest of presenting a cohesive development. But for a clear picture of the field, I don't know a better place to turn!
- First impression of this book was good, but after closer inspection, I feel like Dr. McHale just gleaned what she felt was important from Herzberg and slapped it in her own book. It is heavily math based with a significant lack of phenomenological descriptions and big picture items, therefore making the content even more difficult to follow. In multiple cases, concepts were briefly mentioned, but not enough information is given in the text to really understand what she was talking about (satellite transitions/lines for example). Another very bothering issue is the problems at the end of the chapter. The problems are not on the same level of difficulty at the text, making many of them nearly impossible to solve without further explaination which is not contained in the text book. If you are in the market for a low level Spectroscopy book, consider Bernath's, or better yet, just get Herzberg's books, which are the seminal books on this very beautiful portion of Physics and Chemistry.
- I used this text in my graduate-level spectroscopy class and my opinion is that it is completely worthless! It is unreadable and frustratingly lacking in examples and instructive ability. Stay away - you are better off using Harris and Bertolucci.
- A little wrap in the right corner,i didn`t know where is from, maybe in the delivery. That`s what i unsatisfied with!
- It is OK, except that it is not hardcopy, which I knew when I bought it. And I have to protect it very carefully.

4 comments about The Chemistry of Fragrances: From Perfumer to Consumer (RSC Paperbacks).
- If you are looking for the chemistry of fragrances, this is definitely a book you must purchase. The authors goes into great details about the history, science, and the art of perfumery. Highly recommended!
- Clear, well-written, scholarly, a must for everyone with even a passing interest in the science of olfaction
- I purchased the book as a beginner perfumer hoping it would give me a backround in aroma chemicals used in perfumery. As I don't have a background in chemistry I found the book, especially the first chapters pretty hard going as it explains more the chemical structures of common aroma chemicals and how they are derived, as opposed to their creative uses in modern perfumery. It is still worth reading if you have begun perfumery as a hobby and has useful information on how many ingredients are produced and an inside view on modern production methods. It hasn't really hit the spot for me and I will be back online hunting for another book to purchase.
- if you love organic chemistry and fragrance this is the book for you! Otherwise it contains tiny tidbits of information for natural perfumers. Natural perfumers should buy something by Mandy Aftel. If you are into synthetic fragrance you might like this book.

- I've used this book in my own research and also in teaching grad level chemical separations course -- an excellent resource. A perfect "career bookend" to Giddings' early work "Dynamics of Chromatography".
- Is a great book for people starting in any type of separation sciences. It is easy to understand and explains many important concepts that are necessary to understand the chromatographic phenomena.

5 comments about Modern Electrochemistry 1: Ionics, 2nd Edition.
- This book By Bockris and Reddy, is the best book you can hope to lay your hands, if you are looking for an good introduction and thorough description of the fundamentals. This is definetely one book, or rather two books which no library should be without, including libraries of graudate students. The style of the authors is extremely simple, and reading this book is like reading a story book. you would find it quite difficult to keep the book down once you have picked it up.
An absolutely fantastic book, though slightly on the costlier side.
The difference of this second Ed. from the first one is huge; the author actually rewrote ca. 50% of the first volume (Ionics) and ca. 70% of the second volume (Electrodics, still in writing), covering literature up to later 90's. For classroom use, the most important addition of the edition is the problem set, which are extremely helpful for students on introductory level. It was a great honor of me to be invited by the author to write part of the problem sets for all chapters in Vol.1 and a few chapters in Vol.2, and I can tell you that the author and the problem writers put in a lot of effort to elucidate the fundamental electrochemistry while also help original thinkings of the students on more advanced electrochemistry issues.
- The Modern Electrochemistry volumes are truly excellent textbooks and references for all aspects of electrochemistry.
Whether you're dealing with corrosion, electrolytic processes, batteries, or biochemistry, the electrochemistry is fully explained here. The authors go into a great deal of detail topics while maintaining a very familiar, easy-to-read tone. There are also plenty of interesting historical footnotes which serve to lighten the text. These books are written for electrochemists interested in the chemical mechanisms behind electrochemical processes. Applications of these processes are treated very briefly. If you are more interested in real-world applications of these processes, other texts may serve you better. The text comes in three volumes, which is problematic. It is difficult to find all three at most booksellers. Many online booksellers (including Amazon) don't distinguish between the volumes in their catalogs; I had to go by ISBN numbers to ensure I got the complete set. But it was well worth the trouble.
- These authors have a great writing style. This is a subject matter that has a potential to be very, very dry but the authors have somehow made it enjoyable. If they get into hardcore calculations and derivations that you might be a little rusty on, they anticipate that (I assume from lots of students' feedback) and include appendixes at the end of each chapter so that you don't need to run off and find the corresponding chapter in one of your math/physics/chemistry textbooks. They also have a very useful nomenclature guide (in the first book only) in case you keep forgetting what certain symbols mean and what units they are in. The footnotes are great and keep things from getting too dry. Overall, I would definitely recommend these three books.
Note: Unless you have a fetish for hard covers, get the paperbacks; they're half the cost. When I bought these books from amazon.com, it was very confusing to figure out which books to get. Here are the ISBN's of each of the three books in the series. This will save you some headache:
Electrochemistry 1: Ionics
ISBN: 0306455552 (paperback)
Electrochemistry 2A: Fundamentals of Electrodics
ISBN: 0306461676 (paperback)
Electrochemistry 2B: Electrodics in Chemistry, Engineering, Biology, and Environmental Science
ISBN: 0306463253 (paperback)
- An excellent book on ionics in electrochemistry. Bockris and Reddy are great authorities on electrochmistry and have handled all the topics covered in this book very lucidly and superbly. A must reading for all electrochemists and others who are working in this area.

3 comments about Analytical Method Development and Validation.
- Very general description of the method validation process. This book could only be the first step in undestanding of the general requirements for the method validation process. To deepen one's knowledge, the reader should choose the books (e.g. Development and Validation of Analytical Methods by Christopher Riley) which are focused on explaining the concept from the scientific prospective.
- This book is a very good basic (and comparatively inexpensive) introduction to the terms and definitions of method validation. Certainly worth the price until the next edition comes out in early 2007.
Protocol sugestions, and the bibliography are worth the price alone.
- I have to admit being a bit disappointed with this book. The content is sound, based to a large extent on ICH guidance, and for the most part, applies concepts to HPLC analysis. The actual text begins on p17 and ends on p 83, with an average words/page <250 (there are likely less than 16000 words in the entire text). So my rating is biased by what I consider a poor value in terms of cost/content. By way of comparison, the ICH Q2A and Q2B comprise almost 3700 words.
Although the book focuses on HPLC, the title concept also applies to other analytical methods (immunoassays, bioassays, mass spec., flow cytometry, etc.) There is clearly more to be learned on this topic. This text may be considered an intorductory primer, or a concise summary.
In retrospect, I would preferred to have spent more money to receive a more thorough text with applications in more diverse methods.
