4 comments about Audio Recording for Profit: The Sound of Money.
- This book offers a comprehensive look at the business side of the music industry. It is a complete study of the various facets of the industry, and if you are a teacher, you can receive a lesson plan for the book.
Mr. Stone's understanding of what it takes to run a for-profit recording studio will attract neophytes and industry veterans alike. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about audio recording. It is a great reference book as well as great reading.
- It is obvious that Mr. Stone took a bunch of magazine columns and tried to link them together cohesively. The result is a hodge-podge of mostly useless advice, dangerously thin on details, and oftentimes redundant. In fact, whole paragraphs are repeated in several subsequent chapters. There is little groundbreaking here; just simple advice you've probably heard time and again. If you know nothing of this industry, this might provide a primer. But if you've been around a bit, there is just too little of any real-world advice that could help anyone run a recording studio effectively or profitably.
- I received this book yesterday and have had the opportunity to read three chapters so far.
Although I have been through many aspects of the music business over a 13 year period, I have never learned as much in one sitting as I have already with this book. For anyone entering or managing the commercial end of audio recording/producing, this book is a MUST HAVE! To me, it is worth a thousand times its weight in gold, if not a million times its weight in platinum. With this book, you can learn how to start up your studio, and operate it successfully and profitably. You can learn how to increase your revenue potential, save money, time and major headaches, make wise spending choices, effectively network, and see your studio through its rough times, to name a few. And you learn it from one of the world's most successful studio managers, the founder of the legendary Record Plant in Los Angeles, California. Not for the faint of heart. Harold Galcso Superfastlane Entertainment ... I am in no way professionally affiliated with the author or publisher of this material, though I would be if I could be.
- I have read a lot of books on this industry, and respect the authors background and wealth of info, unfortunately he seems to be talking about $75,000 purchases, leases, and clients that most of us will never deal with, and if we did we would probably already know this stuff, (and or wouldn't ask his advice on)
all in all a lot of other mostly out-dated psychology, designed to mostly impress his current clients or his peers or something, (I don't know) but i got nothing out of this book, and make a good living recording music in my small but profitable studio.

2 comments about Voice Enabling Web Applications: VoiceXML and Beyond (With CD-ROM).
- This is an excellent overview of VoiceXML. In addition to a thorough discussion of the VXML language and technologies, the author had the great idea of illustrating the material via a Personal Information Manager project (address book, calendar, and to-do list), which the reader creates while reading along. IMHO, this is by far the most practical of the VoiceXML books that I own. I learned quite a bit, and have even been able to create a number of useful VXML apps on my own since reading it.
- This is a great book. It is an example of how a modern
technical book should be written to really teach the reader both the substance of the subject and the context in which that subject is meaningful. There is high level motivation throughout the book which enables the reader looking for an overview of Voice XML and how it relates to technologies used with it. There is technical detail that will enable the software engineer to understand the technical foundations and how they relate to technologies used with Voice XML such as XSLT, JSP, HTML, JavaScript, etc. In addition, there is an architectural framework of browsers, gateways, web servers, servlets, grammars, telephony, and the transformational processing model, which is concisely presented with the essential concepts needed to understand how all these technologies are woven into a cohesive structure to enable the building of Voice XML and multimedia applications. If that is not enough, there is working exampleprovided which is explained throughout the book, and it is even presented in a UML framework which will be useful to engineers who want a good example of effective use of UML. And there is a CD, and associated web site, with both the application and all the tools you need to build and test the example - note: some of the tools like XML Spy, IBM WebSphere, Allaire JRun, and Apache Cocoon may have time limits, so don't install the software until you are ready to spend the time necessary to set up and test the application. Finally, the book is written at an extremely intelligent level and the reader may find some of the philosophies like cognition and artificial intelligence stimulating. Sounds like a lot for a 200 page book, but the author has succeeded in delivering all the above and more in a manner that should serve as a model for presenting new technologies.

1 comments about System Dynamics Modelling: A PRACTICAL APPROACH.
- This is the only book worth reading about the field of System Dynamics if you are interested into concrete implementations of the method.
It works with concrete cases as related from the client with plain words and builds progressively models starting from a qualitative point of view, then building a quantitative model showing in the process the added value of it.
It has too several chapters on the concrete use of policy optimisation.
The cases are both open or closed systems (with or without exogenous variables) and are varied.
It does not try to hide the difficulties of the method by simplifying
the problems, and the cases look realistic contrarily to many other books.
The only drawback is the presentation and the use of a language that is
probably no more sold and rarely used.
But is is relatively easy to translate the models into another more used package.
The author of the book is clearly somebody who has a perfect mastering of the theory of System Dynamics and both a long experience of using it on
concrete cases.
This is very rare among authors of scientific books and worth to be mentionned.
