  1. First I'll say I haven't read the novel so I wasn't let down by it because it differed from the original story. I've seen nearly every werewolf movie ever made from old black and white classics like the Wolfman or Henry Hull's Werewolf of London to the first 7 of the Howling movies (some of which I couldn't believe I actually wasted the calories watching the thing), Dog Soldiers, Wolf, Beast of Bray Road, American Werewolf in London/Paris, and even Cursed and Gingersnaps along with countless others.

These werewolves were certainly a bit more fluffy on average than the lurking monsters in some of the other films, towering on two legs with dribbling saliva, wild eyes and 3 inch claws. Like the original Howling, they didn't change by the moon. While some argue this takes away from the mythos, it also has the potential to put an edge on a movie. At least if they only change under the full moon you don't have to worry about being ripped to shreds during the daylight. And how many movies have been made where it's glaringly obvious something is going to happen because people are taking a stroll (or making out... monsters hate people making out in their woods) under the full moon? With a free transforming werewolf the danger is real and present at any time, any place, and you're never safe.

The second thing I applauded the movie for was the human being actually having a brain and a spine. Particularly in recent vampire/werewolf genera it's too often reduced to Lois Lane and Superman syndrome. The buff, cool good-monster type is the object of a human's love, and the supernatural character has to go charging to the rescue every two seconds. In this movie, the romantic interest actually managed to look after himself.

The transformation sequences were also more fluffy, but since they weren't as savage or scary as many of the horror movies, I didn't mind. I'd rather have seen that than a bunch of cheap and badly done CGI anyway (Bad Moon, anyone?)

I found it different enough to be refreshing, a bit sappy (wasn't overly fond of Underworld although I own both of those, too), and certainly not your standard horror flick. That can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. If you want fluffy wolves and a romance plot which happens to involve werewolves and a certain amount of peril, then it's not bad. If you want a horror movie with plenty of splatter, definitely bury this one in the back yard.

As werewolf movies go, there's certainly a lot worse out there.

  2. I usually try to appreciate films based on books for their own merits. This film is visually appealing, but as I absolutely love the original story, I truly cannot overcome my horror at how badly the story was butchered to make this into a film. I don't even know WHY it was butchered so badly, as it certainly doesn't improve the story, which was fine as it was. Agnes Bruckner is good in the role of Vivian, as are the actors who portray the Five; aside from Rafe's penchant for the occasional murder in the film, these six characters maintain their essence in the adaptation, though no other character does. In the novel Gabriel is sexy, strong, and cool, not hateful and perverted. He is not Rafe's father, and he does not switch mates every seven years.

Anyway, I was terribly disappointed with this film because I believe a film based more on the original novel would have been MUCH, MUCH better.

  3. I loved Annette Curtis Klaus's novel. It did for werewolves in a smaller amount of time what Ann Rice's Vampire Chronicles series did for vampires: Made them human and empathetic.

Klaus's story wasn't just one of people who became wolves at night and preyed on humans, but of the inner struggle their human part has with their animal part. Vivian learns eventually that she cannot help being what she is and that it's not so bad with a good, strong leader like her father once was.

Here is a disgusting story about nothing but senseless bloodshed, bad special effects, and it leaves you cold once the end credits begin to roll. There is no moral to the story about being true to yourself--just one long, cheap bloodbath that couldn't even begin to satisfy the most hardcore horror fans. Klause's book had some charm, humor, and heart in it among the truly eery moments. This so-called film adaptation offers nothing but cheap thrills and a meaningless waste of 100 minutes of your time you will never get back. Read the book, please!

  4. I've never read the book, and honestly thought this would be one of the regular hokey horror flicks... you know where the werewolves look more like big growly people in ape costumes?

This film was a breath of fresh air, though if you are after the usual slasher horror flick skip it, but if like me, you appreciate the romantic old-world side of the supernatural that is often only found in really dated literature, this movie is well worth your time. I've added the book the movie is based on to my reading list.

The special effects though few and far in-between, were beautifully done. Also a plus to the crew for using real wolves.

  5. Some people say that you shouldn't compare books to movies, generally the people who haven't read the books, but when a movie is based off of a book of course you should compare it and judge it on whether it kept the integrity of the author's story, and this movie did not. The book was all about growing up as an american teenage girl and having this whole secret life of being a werewolf, of wanting to fit in, and be understood, but always being set apart. When making the movie they increased her age moved the movie across to a whole different continent, and basically turneed it upside down. All they really kept the same from the book to the movie was the names. Our main character doesn't even end up with the man she's supposed to. Not to mention they turned the good guys into bad guys and the villains into good guys. Even when not compared to the books, the effects were awful and the plot or point of the story was almost non-existent. This movie was awful and was not worth the money I spent to buy my ticket.

5 comments about Deranged/Motel Hell (Midnite Movies Double Feature).
  1. It was ok, liked it as a kid, sometimes it's good to go back in time. One good thing price was good.Ilike buying from you guys right now can't think of next movie but I will soon. Thanks Again

  2. Deranged was the only film i hadnt seen yet based on Ed Gein and I have to say i was pleasantly suprised. Made in 1974, it takes a different approach to the other films using a narrator to offer his two cents during the film. I know the story well by now but I was satisfied with the acting and found it to be a decent horror film based on the atrocities of Ed Gein. It stands out amongst the others.

Motel Hell was something else. I enjoyed this one a lot. It was more of a horror comedy type of movie. Really far out and I liked the characters. Farmer Vincent makes meats and plants tourtists in his garden. A friendly guy on first impression, he has some secrets hes hiding from the public concerning his meats. The fight at the end was great. and you cant forget that pig mask. That really freaked me out. This one shares a similar theme to Texas Chainsaw Massacre except double the dark comedy and humor. The ending is also quite funny. Recommended.

  3. These 2 movies are really really horrible. They fit the genre of crappy, campy b'rated horror, accept they aren't good! Do yourself a favor, save 4 hours for something better...

  4. Funny, B Rated 80s horror. Motel Hell is a classic thrasher movie with a few odd twists. I would like to see a remake of this one. I still get a kick out of it when I watch it today. A lot more comical than it was when I was a kid.

    STORY
    ------
Husband and Wife own a motel and they plant peoples bodies in the ground. When they are ready, they dig em up, cut em up, and sell them as beef jerky to customers.

  5. I loved this double feature, lookout for a cameo with Cliff from Cheers as a cheesy rockbands drummer.

5 comments about The Blob.
  1. There is nothng more terrifying than watching the young and beautiful destroyed, while being robbed of their lives. Even the concept of what this creature is and the ideas it gives the imagination of what it must feel like to have such a hideous creature, like this, traveling through every orafice of your beautiful body, while it dissolves you as you scream in horrific pain, goes without saying. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought these thoughts watching this film. But this is what makes for good horror.

Most scenes are a result of reverse filming, forward projection work and matt screening as well as latex modeling: Well done for the most part, but with some minor flaws in the effects and story line.

Given the paranoia of the pestulance that hit the earth, starting 1981; first with AIDS, then ebola, and many other unheard of pathogens before that time, this film, I think, best expresses the darkness, fear and death scenario of the time as our world became overwhelmed with plagues.

The death scenes in this are grizzly to say the least; with no respect given to life at all, thus adding to the suspense value. Except for some minor plot and effects flaws, I gave it four stars when it comes to addressing the subject of horror.

It's been 20 years since this remake was made. I figure we are all due for a new remake from Hollywood, using today's computer graphics any time soon. Won't that be a treat?! I suggest no one under age 15 should watch this and those who have epilepsy should skip the theatre scene with the strobing effect used; so as to avoid possible seizure from happening.

  2. If your looking for a no-holdem horror movie from the 80's that just gross, this is your movie, good horror.

  3. The Blob isn't a scary movie at all to me. But it's definitly a fun ride. Some decent acting and really good death scenes. It's cool watching people dissolve alive inside the Blob. One of the things I really liked about this movie. Is the ones you think are not going to die... Die!! Now that's some great stuff!

  4. This is a perfect example of a horror movie that can only be scary to a child or someone who's not a regular horror movie watcher.

Think about it- a giant blob goes around and kills people. Isn't that funny? And isn't it even funnier to someone who's extremely familiar and huge fans of other horror classics such as the Exorcist, or any Stephen King movie? There's no WAY someone who's a big fan of those movies would be able to find any horror in a blob going around attacking people.

I remember as a kid I used to pretend my action figures were the victim of the blob on my bedroom floor- the blob being playdoh or silly puddy or something. Ah, I can still remember the smell of playdoh and silly puddy. You never forget it.

Anyway, it's not a scary movie to an adult, to put it simply, but it's entertaining enough to watch a couple times.

  5. This horror flick is suspenseful, has good dialog, convincing acting, and a good score. The director even provides some drama at times, such as the scenes following the death of the young girl's boyfriend at her house with her parents.

5 comments about Space Above and Beyond - The Complete Series.
  1. Overall this is worth watching.
I find it tough to watch in 4:3 format (it really makes it feel old and it hard for me to fall completely into the action when watching on a 16:9 screen)
I had slight trouble with the first dvd getting it to play during the final chapter of the first episode. All other dvd's have had no problem.
The play quality on my dvd player is not perfect. I think its because my player is not a region 1 player (its multi-region). Basically there is a slight stutter every hundred frames or so, which makes panning shots very choppy.
I am still happy with the purchase however as I did not see all the episodes the first time around, and in Australia there were no re-runs.

  2. I've been waiting so long for this DVD release after watching some of the series back when it was first shown in Australia. What I saw, I enjoyed back then, but I saw only a minority of the episodes. This boxed set allowed me to enjoy ALL the episodes. It's a real disappointment that the series was never continued beyond the first season; there was so much potential for a great sci fi series.

  3. I caught several episodes of this short lived series and loved it. I had never seen the pilot and, while I believe Sci-Fi picked it up for a short run I still missed most of it.

I like the way the characters developed through the series and the writing, while a little corny in places was generally well done and played by the actors. I like the fact that this wasn't a "Starship Troopers" rip-off but a gritty and human look at people in real situations and the problems we face and are able to overcome without coming back and walking through cheering throngs to have the Princess give you a big medal for saving the Universe and everyone lives happily ever after. Soldiers are heros and "do what they do" and go home to live the rest of their lives with that experience. They train, fight, and grow as a unit and come to trust each other implicitly regardless of shortcomings and backgrounds.

What I didn't like was the presentation and packaging. Basically I think someone had these on tape, hooked it to a DVD recorder and let it rip. There were no additional goodies in the menus and the packaging was mediocre at best.

That said it was well worth what I paid just to be able to watch the whole series through again. I just wish they hadn't cancelled it so soon.

  4. I purchased this set after recently "discovering" Firefly, which I thought was superb. If only this show had been created after the Starship Troopers movie and Firefly, I think the writers and directors would have realized how much more they could do with the show. In the end, the characters aren't as intriguing or endearing as Joss Wheadon's characters. The potential was there, but definitely not realized - it's obvious why the show was taken off the air.

I trudged through the entire season and found the show only started becoming entertaining during the last few episodes. The scripts are atrotious, plagued by one-dimentional main charaters, cliche-laden dialogue and plot holes you can drive a truck through.

The overarching storyline is that humans are at war with an advanced alien race. While the viewer is to assume millions of humans are involved in the offensive against the aliens, the story is narrowly situated on a five-man squadron and their CO. Somehow the team evolves from being rookies guarding supply lines to an elite, higly regarded commando squadron over the course of a few episodes, which doesn't make much sense as they don't seem to be involved in any major combat. These five seem to consistently be on their own in what one would assume would be an enormous war. I'm sure these plots kept CGI and extras costs down. Regardless, the writing could've greatly benefited from a grander scope, or at least creating a few dozen more CGI spacefighters so it's not five moderately competent pilots saving the human race.

The special effects/CGI are subpar to what the Star Trek franchise was creating at the time (not a Trekkie, just using it for reference). The actors, while no-names, are all good, though I think better writing and directon could've benefitted their performances.

If you're looking for another "one season wonder" like Firefly, this isn't it.

  5. Having been some time since I first saw this series, I am startled by just how good it is. First rate writing, acting, and set/production values all combine to equal stellar viewing. (Pun intended) Got it for a super duper price too. Best TV sci-fi since ST Next Gen. Network TV's cover is blown; now we know they can do great SciFi. So where is it? Certainly not on SciFi channel. But it lives on in my living room, so it's all good.

5 comments about Batman - Mystery of the Batwoman (Keepcase).
  1. Well, let's see. We have a compelling plot, witty dialogue, fantastic animation, gorgeous women, and plenty of action. Wow, pass the popcorn. Mystery of the Batwoman is just that, a mystery. Who is she, and why is she wreaking havoc on the Penguin, Rupert Thorne, and a new third player? Even Batman can't figure it out. There are certainly plenty of lovely ladies to choose from, and not in the usual way that his handsome alter ego may be accustomed to. Alan Burnett's intricate storyline is more of a whoisshe than a whodunit, with Penguin and Co. the ill fated individuals, more than Batman, who desperately want this perplexing problem quickly and permanently resolved. They even bring in Bane to help find a solution. This story has it all, with about the only area of criticism, and a fairly minor one at that, being with the voice acting. Paul Williams and Henry Silva are regrettably absent from their usual respective roles of Penguin and Bane, and their gifted and pleasurable presence is undoubtedly missed, but the rest of the movie is so remarkably strong that it clearly compensates for this one unfortunate misstep. When discussing any animated movie, even one such as this replete with interesting twists and turns at every juncture, in the final analysis it still primarily comes down to one thing. Was it fun? The answer to that is a resounding and thunderous yes, and praise all around to Alan Burnett, Michael Reaves, and the rest of the talented team of animators and creators for producing yet another stellar and supremely enjoyable Batman movie. P.S. The bonus Chase Me short, or for that matter all of the extras, are great also.

  2. I have always liked Batman, and this story is a good one. The title threw me a bit - my mind read "Catwoman" for a long time until I really paid attention to the cover and read the summary on the back!

There is a Batwoman going around town , getting back at the bad guys who have done her wrong over the years, and Batman has to find out who she is. Not overly complicated but a good story. There is depth beyond my short description however, as there is more than one suspect, so adults won't pick it right away - it'll keep you going for a good while. Robin is of the Tim Drake era, but does not play a big role.

All the bat-gear is there, as you'd expect, and despite what some have said, I found the video clip enjoyable. It's animation to music , without voices, and just a little something extra, like a short story. The other extras are good also - some interviews with the voice-actors and the writers and producer. So what if it was developed quickly? Sometimes good ideas flow quite quickly, you shouldn't have to struggle and stress over something before it can be a good product.

Buy it, watch it, enjoy it.

  3. here is another great batman animated film which features a new heroe batwoman. who gives batman a ran for his money. this movie was awesome.

  4. The end of the line. This movie marked the end of Batman: the Animated Series. A mysterious new figure, Batwoman, is in Gotham targeting the criminal underworld. Batman tries to find out who the Batwoman is, coming close, but then finding that it can't be who he thinks it is. It also marks a welcome return of the villain Bane, always a personal favorite.

This movie also serves as a sort of backdoor for Batman Beyond. Take a look at the Batwoman's costume and you kind of get the idea where the suit in Batman Beyond comes from.

  5. The WB-DC Comics collaboration turns out another excellent full length cartoon movie. This one focuses on a mysterious Batwoman fighting crime in Gotham as a vigilante. As a full length movie the authors were able to develop a storyline with much more depth and they did. The result is entertaining and well-made.

5 comments about The Black Cauldron (Disney Gold Classic Collection).
  1. The pig in this movie was so cute,
nobody felt sorry for the boy being a pig keeper
and a major part of the pathos in the
    original book was lost.
The horned king was just not well done
    or any of the witches.
Even the wandering minstrel was a caricature of himself.
Since much of the book was already at that caricature
level of folk tales and fairy tales,
exaggerations to cutesy just lost the
    integrity of the original
    plot.

  2. I loved the Lloyd Alexander books as a kid, and when this move came to the theaters I begged to go. (Yeah, I'm that old) The movie is too cutsie in some parts, and dark in others. The two differing directions take a lot away from the movie. Its almost as if two different directors where trying to make two different versions of the movie, and then in the end it just got spliced together.

  3. I'm not going to go into detail about the movie, its plot, its troubled history, etc. You can find that just about anywhere you look online for this film. I'm strictly going to discuss the DVD. This DVD has several pros and cons that you might consider before buying.

    Pros:
-The movie is presented in its original 70MM widescreen aspect ratio for the first time since its original theatrical release.
-The DVD contains an incredible Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround track.
-Although not listed ANYWHERE on the packaging, the original theatrical trailer is included, very scratchy and in fullscreen
-The Quest For The Black Cauldron Game is quite a bit of fun. Not as fun as other Disney DVD set-top games, but better than your average trivia DVD game.
-A great still-frame gallery is included - our only glimpse into the making of the movie.
-The DVD includes the great Donald Duck cartoon Trick Or Treat.

    Cons:
-The film is presented in a 4:3 letterboxed transfer instead of a 16:9 letterboxed transfer.
-The film obviously hasn't been given any type of restoration, cleanup, or anything of that matter. Dirt, scratches, and flickering, while not a complete nuisance, are more present than one would like.
-Apart from the photo gallery, there is NOTHING on here that gives the consumer any insight into the making of the film.
-Although the theatrical trailer is present, it would have been nice had Disney also included some TV spots and the trailer from the 1985 VHS release of Pinocchio, which is said to contain some of the deleted footage from the film.
-Speaking of the deleted footage, if not restored into the film itself, they could have at least included it as a bonus feature, with some info on why it was deleted and such. Preferably shown edited into where it'd be in the film so as to be placed into context.
-I'm not sure if this is an issue with everyone, but on my RCA DVD player, when chapter 12 ends, instead of simply going into chapter 13, it skips to chapter 14 and I have to skip back to chapter 13 in order to watch it. I wouldn't bother mentioning this, except I returned my first copy in exchange for a new one, and the new one did the same thing. It's a shame that Disney cares so little for this movie that they allowed mass quantities of the DVD to go out with a glitch like this and instead of recalling them and fixing the problem, they just let them be sold. While at least I won't MISS any of the movie, it still ruins the flow of the film to have to rewind to view the skipped chapter. Hopefully, this isn't a problem for most DVD players.

Considering that Disney is starting to reissue some of its Gold Classic Collection discs with new transfers, new bonus materials, etc., hopefully they'll give The Black Cauldron the same consideration. A new transfer shouldn't be difficult, since the film HAS been restored and made into an anamorphic widescreen transfer. (This version has currently only seen the light of day in France.) Despite the fact that The Black Cauldron was one of Disney's most troubled and financially disappointing productions in the history of the studio, it's since developed a loyal, if small, following, and a new DVD release with some additional trailers/TV ads, SOME kind of making-of material, a freshened up 16:9 enhanced widescreen transfer, and all that good stuff (Maybe even a music-only track to show off Elmer Bernstein's magnificent score.) would be a nice way to acknowledge that yes, there ARE people out there who would actually LIKE a better DVD of this film. Meanwhile, I'm not holding my breath for it anytime soon, so for now, I'll make do with this Gold Collection Edition DVD with its passable transfer, all the while being grateful that they at least bothered to present it in its original widescreen format. I guess I'll give kudos to Disney at least for that...and for the fact that it's seen the light of day on any home video format at all in the US.

  4. I remember many years ago the Disney Channel advertising this new film, full of HIGH TECH animation. Even then it looked boring. Recently I found it in the Clearance section of Half-Priced Books in Dallas Texas. It was marked down to 99 cents. So I bought it. I am sorry to say it wasn't even worth that. This movie took them 12 years and $25 million to make. It only made $10 million at the box office. The characters were incredibly boring and irritating. The animation looked like some cheap 1979s cartoon. It took me three days to watch all of it. Let me tell you, even that was a chore. Most of the negative reviewers are fans of the books. I have never read the books but am I big fan of Disney. This movie was a true disappointment to me. Skip it, if the urge every comes to you to watch it.

  5. I originally saw this in theaters as a kid and hadn't really seen it since, except once in a great while in the last several years. At the time I didn't realize it was based on a series of books, but its still a good movie. However I must point out that it is not for young kids, due to some parts in the movie. Other than that, its a great find and worth every penny. Good for Halloween, as it also has the Donald Duck short cartoon, Trick and Treat.

5 comments about Tales From The Crypt: Bordello of Blood / Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight (Double Feature).
  1. Great Movies both on 1 DvD good deal. But demon Knights was the bomb. Full of fun, horror, and blood. The Crypt Keeper have you wanting more .

  2. With BORDELLO OF BLOOD and DEMON KNIGHT, this dvd offers up in widescreen a fun B-movie double feature bill from the Tales From The Crypt line. Both movies came out in the mid-'90s, during the height of comedian Dennis Miller's success and when William Sadler and Billy Zane were merely mediocre instead of obscure and irrelevant, which is what they are now. The ill-kept and pun-afflicted Crypt Keeper adds much to the campy feel of both flicks as wraparound scenes have him providing ghoulishly humorous intro and post-mortem honors.

I actually saw these two films during their respective theater runs and had a hell of a time with both. DEMON KNIGHT, released in 1995, is a fairly gripping horror action/thriller, low budget sensibilities and cruddy special effects notwithstanding (c'mon, fluorescent green goo?). The story takes place one dark, stormy night in Wormwood, New Mexico as a fleeing man crashes into town. Frank Brayker (William Sadler) is guarding the last of the mystical seven Keys, these keys being ancient relics that together can be harnessed to master the cosmos. The forces of Hell, having already amassed six of the things, now aim to have the last key, and, so, Brayker is on the run from the relentless demon Collector (Billy Zane, who is devilish fun here). But, at last cornered in a broken down church-turned-motel, Brayker prepares for his last stand.

While DEMON KNIGHT has its quirky moments, it still overall espouses the more traditional horror conventions. On the other hand, 1996's BORDELLO OF BLOOD sacrifices its horror elements for its campy sense of humor. This film is decidedly tongue-in-cheeked, thanks muchly to Dennis Miller's wiseacre protagonist. Miller's indifferent approach to his role is typical of how he goes about his sporadic cinematic career. In movies Dennis Miller basically plays himself, and it's no different with BORDELLO OF BLOOD. Miller is irreverent private eye Rafe Guttman, who runs afoul of insiduous (but sexy) she-vampires who suck blood and other objects in a brothel disguised as a seedy funeral home.

It's impossible to take this film seriously (and I'm sure it wasn't meant to), what with Miller's zingers coming so fast and frequently and mockeries like the overzealous evangelist (a stubbled Chris Sarandon) and his Laserlight o' the Lord being trotted out before our eyes. BORDELLO OF BLOOD revels in its cheesiness and is so playfully awful that, frankly, it suckered me into liking it. Not to mention, all the naked girls in the film do not hurt at all as they prove to be as cheeky as Miller, though not in the same way. But there's a definite disconnect between Rafe Guttman and the scary goings-on about him. While Billy Zane is amusing and even magnetic in DEMON KNIGHT, Dennis Miller's character comes off as bemused and overly facetious (although his one-liners are funny). But, no, Miller doesn't at all lend credibility to his role, and maybe that even fits the tone of the film. I had this sense that Miller was trying real hard not to wink at the camera.

Familiar B-list faces dot these two pictures. DEMON KNIGHT offers a supporting cast of CCH Pounder, Thomas Haden Church, a very solid Jada Pinkett (not yet Pinkett-Smith), and an uncredited John Larroquette. BORDELLO OF BLOOD has Angie Everhart as Lilith the head vampiress, Chris Sarandon, and bottom feeder Corey Feldman. Perfectly in line with the star power, we get the dubious special effects, the weak scripts, the flimsy plotlines, the cheap and ineffectual scares, and the heady aroma of cheese. Yet somehow - and maybe it's because both films embrace their low rent, trashy stature with such gusto - BORDELLO OF BLOOD and DEMON KNIGHT contrive to be fun cinematic treats. Or guilty pleasures. Whatever. It's one or the other. Or to quote the very quotable Rafe Guttman: "I feel like I'm in a bad Tales From The Crypt episode." And that's good.

  3. Both great movies if you like scary movies with humor and a good ending would highly recommend.

  4. I love Tales from the Crypt, and to have these two movies is a treat. I thought it was cool they came together like that, I couldn't be more satisfied. Thanks!

  5. I tip my hat to Universal Pictures for, finally, releasing these two classics on DVD. Bordello of Blood tells the story of a wisecracking private-eye named Rafe Guttman who investigates a missing person report at a titilating bordello where the madam & her bevy of beauties want more than your money..they want your blood. Soon, Rafe finds himself up the creek without a paddle in the den of the hungry vampiresses and battling a televangelist named Reverend Jimmy Current who has a talisman & some despicable plans. On the other hand, Demon Knight tells the story of a drifter named Brayker who possesses the last of seven ancient keys that hold the power to stop the forces of darkness and protect all humanity from ultimate evil. The demonic Collector has collected the other six keys and he wants the last. It's up to Brayker and the strong-willed Jeryline to lead the inhabitants of a run-down hotel in a gruesome battle against the Collector and his evil horde of ghouls & make it out alive. Although the movies are put on the disc alphabetically, they were actually released in reverse. Demon Knight came out in 1995 and was directed by Ernest R. Dickerson. It starred Billy Zane, William Sadler, & Jada Pinkett Smith. It turned out to be a success. Bordello of Blood came out in 1996 and was directed by Gilbert Adler. It starred Dennis Miller, Corey Feldman(The Lost Boys), Erika Eleniak, Chris Sarandon(of Child's Play/Fright Night fame), and Angie Everhart. Willam Sadler & Whoopi Goldberg have cameos in the movie. Sadly, Bordello of Blood didn't do as well as Demon Knight did at the box office and was considered a box-office failure. It is a movie worth watching, however. All vampire movies are worth watching. ;) Both films are based on the hit HBO television series, "Tales From The Crypt" starring John Kassir as the voice of the Cryptkeeper. I highly recommend these two movies to all Tales From The Crypt fans as well as those who like watching a good spooky movie on a Friday Night. For this low, low price; you can't beat it.

  1. Yul Brynner is relentless as the western gunshooter robot gone out of control. Great sci-fi type movie for all ages.

  2. I remember being taken to this picture at least 3 times when I was younger, and after last night's viewing, I asked my parents "Why?".
Yul is kinda going through the motions of hiss "Magnificent Seven" routine, James is kinda annoying, and Richard is really the wrong actor to hold this snore-fest together. Now if the dad from "Eight is Enough" was cast as lead, instead of the dufus minor role he had, then I could see the humor come to life, and maybe keep me awake long enough to care till the end, but it doesn't happen that way, and boy-oh-boy, is this movie SLOW!!
    Be warned.

  3. This is a nifty little thriller. I enjoy it every time I see it. But, how come no Special Edition DVD? Richard Benjamin, James Brolin and Michael Crichton are all still alive and kicking. I'd love to hear what they have to say about the making of and all that. How about it?

  4. This is a cult classic starring a legendary actor, Yul Brynner. Inspite of the lack of today's modern special effects, this movie still takes you on a thrill-ride. You feel like you're being chased. Yeah, it's old school but it works.

  5. This movie was as great the second time as when I saw it over 30 years ago. The acting is superb and Yul Brynner's character is cold and souless. If you want to have a good time while seeing a movie, this is the one to see.

5 comments about The Wicker Man (Two-Disc Special Edition).
  1. I wasted an afternoon when the newer version came out. Nicholas Cage was not enough to salvage it. When I read that Christopher Lee said that the original Wicker Man was his favorite of all the movies that he had made, I rented it. The original version is sinister where the sequel is pityingly laughable. The songs, which were a bit distracting the first time, became assets on subsequent viewings. (like the piano piece from The Bad Seed)

  2. It is listed on the backcover, but nowhere to be seen on any of the two discs. What the heck?

  3. If you are into Freddie Krueger, Leatherface or Jason ... this movie probably is not for you (though I could be wrong). Basically this a story of the conflict between Christianity (represented by Edward Woodward's SGT Howie) and Paganism (represented by Christopher Lee's Lord Summerisle and the people of his island). Sometimes called the "Citizen Kane" of horror movies, it isn't really a horror film at all. In some ways THE WICKER MAN defies labels. It isn't quite a horror film and it isn't completely a psychological thriller. It isn't simply a conflict between old religion/new religion. It is all of them and something more. It is strange and erotic at the same time. Sex is a major theme or perhaps more rightly, reproduction. That is the core of the conflict and the reason for SGT Howie, ultimately, coming to Summerisle -- though he does not know it at the time. Woodward and Lee are standout as is Diane Cilento. Rod Stewart once tried to buy the negative of this movie to have it destroyed -- it featured his then girlfriend Brit Eklund in a nude dance. To appreciate this movie you really do have to view it more than once. The extended version works better in my view.

  4. I saw a brief clip of this movie during the Bravo The 100 Greatest Scary Moments countdown and was immediately intrigued. I found this film, and boy was I surprised.

The premise is so unique and interesting, and the story evolves in such a bizarre matter that I laughed at some of the film because it was so utterly ridiculous at times!

A cop from the mainland goes to a small village island, Summerisle, off the coast of Scotland. The people seem rather perplexed by his presence as the officer comes to investigate the disappearance of a little girl, who they say never existed. Bawdy and erotic scenes of this primitive village tempt and torture the officer as he persists in his investigation. Even though he cannot seem to crack the case, he does discover a lot of strange rituals and behaviors of the community. Finally, the officer finds a way to "blend in" with the town to attempt one last effort at solving the mystery ....

Scary, not so much ... rather this film is an eerie (erotic) mystery. The ending is amazing (I was unable to predict the ending, so I was very surprised by the twists). I would suggest this film to a select few. If you have a passion for 70s scary movies, surprising films, or truly bizarre mysteries--this one is for you.

  5. "The Wicker Man" is the 1973 cult film that rightly burns in the memories of viewers. Its plot is ordinary enough-- Sgt. Howie (Edward Woodward) comes from Scotland to the isolated island of Summerisle to investigate the case of a missing girl. The island's isolated citizens are evasive. He delves deeper, and finds more than he expects.

"Wicker Man" is famous mainly for Britt Ekland's nude dancing and Christopher Lee cross-dressing,and its titular wicker man. Howie embodies uptight Christianity, horrified when he learns that teenaged girls are being taught phallic symbols, seeing couples make love in the bushes, and nude women dancing through a bonfire to bless an expectant mother. The sinister and stylish Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) is hedonistic, enjoying Nature worship and dismissive of Christianity. In an odd way, this 1973 cult classic is timely with its issues of Christianity vs. Earth-based worship, sex education, and the resurgence of paganism. As the villagers on Summerisle have become de-Christianized, their church falling into decay, so has Christianity in Europe become a relic. Howie's horror at "heathens" is mirrored in the recent video of VP nominee Sarah Palin receiving an exorcism from witchcraft at her former church.

"Wicker Man" makes for compelling, powerful cinema. Forget the lame Nicolas Cage remake (with bees! and Ellen Burstyn as the matriarch!) There's a chase through caves with music that sounds like the Grateful Dead, wonderful Celtic folk rock, and food for thought. This cinematic masterpiece burns bright.

  1. Great series. Pretty cheesy, but fun to watch. Not a huge star trek fan. I only got into it because I got sick and watched way too much tv and they re ran voyager pretty often. I enjoy it. Pretty safe for non-trekkies.

  2. I followed this series on Television, but not too closely. Needless to say i found some of this series I had not ever seen. So far. I am throughly excited about the series and the character "Captain Katherine Janeway."

  3. The third season of Star Trek: Voyager follows the crew of the USS Voyager on their continuing quest towards home. The season begins with the conclusion to the 2nd season finale Basics, featuring the Kazon. There is a a mid-season jaunt to late 20th century Earth and many other adventures along the way, including involvement in a civil war in the Q continuum. Other familiar aliens include the Vidiians, the Ferengi, . . . and the Borg. Good season with some interesting episodes and ideas to consider.

  4. love it especially futures end part 1 &2 corporate greed at its best
    ed bagly

  5. If you have made it this far into this series let alone into the franchise you will understand every season has its exceptional episodes and its lackluster episodes and this one is no different. I have actually found episodes I have never seen and I thought that was impossible. I am no trekkie but as an engineer I love this series and have all of ST the next generation and am working to get all of ST DS9 and ST voyager. So as I am watching ST voyager season 4 now I can say season 3's place in the foundation of Star trek lore is solid.
