  1. I'm not sure why some people are saying there are no special features. Each movie has a second disc with bonus features. My complaint here is with the packaging. These are not the same versions you would get if you bought them separately. You get very cheap plastic cases, the inserts are missing, and the discs themselves have plain silver printing instead of nice full color artwork. Overall, they feel like cheap bootleg versions. The worst part is that this set is slightly more expensive than buying the movies individually. Avoid this boxed set and just buy the movies separately.

  2. i received this before they said i would, it was packed great and all the disks are in great quality

  3. I purchased this set for my husband for his recent birthday. He is probably the biggest fan ever. He was thrilled to receive it and my son and he enjoyed watching the movies and spending some quality time together.

  4. Here are a few quick notes on each movie in this collection to let you know what to expect, as well as a ranking on a five-star scale:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: An interesting plot, but takes itself too seriously to be a fun film. (***)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Very emotional drama, character development, and intense action make this a solid film in step with the original Star Trek "cannon". (*****)

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock: What the film lacks in overall plot it makes up for in emotional tension. (****)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: A comedic genius; light-hearted all around and full of laughs. (*****)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier: The "search for God" plot proves to be unfruitful, while the main villain does not create credible tension. (**)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country: A sort of futuristic re-telling of the United States/Russia relationship that hits all the right buttons to create high drama. (*****)

  5. Being a fan of the original Star Trek TV series, I found this set very enjoyable.

  1. I saw this many years ago and the songs haunted me then. I used the film in a class to show demonstrate how a short myth can be translated to film. I worried it might seem too old fashioned. The class loved it. The music and the actors were a beautiful as I remembered them. Even the comic scenes got laughs. Some of my students are absently humming those wonderful tunes.

  2. Black Orfeus, is not jus a movie, but an experience. Watching this movie will take you on a journey of humanity. It is a movie that can be appreciated by anyone from any culture or age group. I watched it with my 8 year old daughter and our 10 year old friend. We had a blast, now the grandmother is watching... experiencing it. I highly recommend this dvd, you're collection will not be complete without this DVD...

  3. I, like Barack Obama's mother(ref. TIME April 21, 2008 p.38), fell in love with this movie when I first saw it in 1960. A colorful cinematic feast for the eyes filmed in Rio at Carnival time, presents a well crafted classic myth that penetrates the deepest depths of your soul and gives you an experience you've never had before. This strange, beautiful tale of native life, love and death had just as powerful an impact on me nearly 50 years later.

  4. I love this movie. I am from Pittsburgh, PA, and would love to know more about Marpessa Dawn. I read somewhere that she was once a dancer with Katherine Dunham's group. I was wondering if she did speak Portuguese. Too bad there was not much work for a beautiful actress such as she at that time. The movie is haunting and much like poetry in motion. A true classic.

  5. This movie has long been among my favorites. Had it been in English it would get 5 stars. It is this reading that takes away from the beauty of the film. Gritty and real. For me, knowing the story, I really don't have to read, and I can focus on the unusual Beauty. There are some flaws but what it clearly does is gives you a sense of place. You ARE in Rio during carnival....and if you can watch this movie without once getting on your feet...you just don't get it. Enjoy!!

5 comments about Alien Nation - The Complete Series.
  1. I loved the original movie, but this series can stand on it's own very well.
Though it takes place in ( our ) past - it's still a fun show to watch.
If you have seen it aired on TV it's still as good as it was then and if you are new to it - watch it with an open mind and I bet you will love it!!!
The follow up TV Movies are worth watching too, yes I am a fan - but I consider myself to be rather picky.
    ENJOY!!!

  2. I have bought a number of DVDs and DVD sets from here at amazon, and before I did, I read customer reviews. Complete series of Star Trek, Smallville, Battlestar Galactica (the new series), and Supernatural. Reviews for all of those encouraged me to buy them, and I am pleased that they did. I also read reviews for some series that I have rented from Blockbuster Online: Surface, Invasion, and Threshold. I rented and watched all the episodes for those three series. I was pleased with them too, and I am thankful for the reviews.

The Alien Nation series was different, however.

I have seen the original movie, starring James Caan. It has its weaknesses, perhaps mainly because it's an old movie lacking the production qualities of a good contemporary science fiction movie. But it has some strong points, and as a discerning fan of good science fiction I find it tolerable enough for a full viewing.

With the recent DVD release of Alien Nation - Ultimate Movie Collection, I read reviews for the TV series and the TV movies. Amazon bundled the the series and the movie collection together; so I bought them all. That was a mistake.

I watched about half of the series' pilot episode before giving up on it. I just could not stomach the lack of respect that was shown for what should be treated as a serious subject matter. Instead of feeling like a dedicated science fiction production, it felt like a blend of science fiction and sit-com.

For example in the police station there's a sequence with the alien ("Newcomer") janitor. While replacing fire extinguishers, he accidentally activates one, giving himself a blast of carbon dioxide, which has a potent effect on the aliens. It knocks him out flat on the floor, and people walk around him as if he didn't even exist. It was nothing less than slapstick comedy. It was out place.

But that's just one obvious example. The underlying spirit of the entire show seems to be of unconvincing levity. It is the direct opposite of the devotion shown in the production of the contemporary Battlestar Galactica series. The people making THAT series are serious. They make me believe, or at least want to believe. But I believe the Alien Nation TV series and the Alien Nation TV movies are not worth the attention of a serious science fiction fan.

  3. I've been enjoying these instead of the reruns of reruns of movies on many stations on Sunday afternoons. If you aren't a sports fan, Sunday afternoon TV is boring.

  4. This is a great show. A must get for anyone who calls themselves a sci-fi fan!

  5. I truly loved this no nonsense series. Slavery, racism and other issues come to light as "humans" of all ethnicities come face to face with another race from another planet, no where else to go, former slaves who are trying to find themselves and make a life amidst fear, stupidity and hatred. The opening tv movie was amazingly powerful, the series was riveting. But, sadly, as with all Fox's hits, was cancelled at the height of it's popularity. It's too bad Fox doesn't know how to handle great shows.

5 comments about Saw III (Unrated Widescreen Edition).
  1. Yet another chilling installment in the Saw franchise. Each new film lets us into mind of Jigsaw just a little bit more. Good fun.

  2. This movie is simply crazy, every choice effects everything, too bad Jigsaw had to go, I still don't beleive he's dead

  3. As far as just being a movie, this one isn't bad...much better than Saw 2 but nowhere near as good as the original. As I mentioned in previous reviews, this franchise has a built-in limited shelf life. There is only so much you can drag out a series like this. The original Saw was a beautifully gruesome idea that was worked with a brilliant touch of morbid, sick class. The second movie was a cheap sequel that made no effort to disguise its cheap, shameless capitalistic quality of just living off the reputation of the original. This third movie had an obvious influence by Saw originators L. Wannell and J. Wan. Their writing and influence in this flick shows. It is a fairly-well thought-out movie premise on its own. But as I said, this series has its limits as far as how far you can stretch the idea before it becomes ridiculous. Sure, all movies are fantasy. They all ask you to believe what can not really happen in everyday life. And the better movies can get away with asking for more "fantasy lenience" than others. But in a franchise such as this, your limits are being tested before you get to Part 3. Where does this Jigsaw guy get the resources to perform these grotesque acts on people??? On its own, this is a pretty decent gore movie. I enjoyed it. But they are really pushing it when they kidnap a doctor and ask her to conduct brain surgery on Jigsaw in some abandoned warehouse with power tools and aspirin. The main theme is clever, in a disgusting, sick way. But, we're reaching the point where continuing this franchise is beating a dead horse. Where it is obvious that Wannell and Wan put some thought into this movie, the time has come to move on. If you like that Saw series, this movie is way better than Saw 2, but it makes no effort to contend with the brilliance of the original Saw. And just so you know, Saw 4 is good, but it's really time to stop!!! I just heard that a Saw 5 is coming out in the fall. All I can say is, the horse is dead already! Seriously, it's dead!!! Stop beating the dead horse already!!! This movie is worth watching, though...just don't watch it while you're eating dinner, especially if you're having ham or pork!

  4. The Saw series keeps movin right along, and fairly well I might add. Though there is some greatness about the first Saw that gets a little lost in each of the sequals, there is more that is added too. In the case of Saw 3, I must say the scenerios are as disturbing as ever, and becoming more complex and original. The movie begins with a bone-crunching (literally) squirming start that already leaves a nasty flavor, and quickly moves to a scene with a man standing in an old classroom, with chains inserted throughout various parts of his body. The bloodshed gets going in Saw 3, though the real scenario takes about 30 minutes to set-up.

The Saw theme still continues in the third installment - "are you grateful to be alive?" and a little more is added to the mix about obsessive vegence. Such is the case with Jeff. His son has been killed in an accident. Jeff is forced through a series of tests, placing him in contact with the various people he wishes were dead since they did nothing to help his situation (eyewitness, judge, and the killer himself). Jeff's test is to see what lengths he will go to forgive these individuals and save them before the traps they are in expire. This is where traps in Saw begin to take on a whole new level. It's not merely bloodshed anymore, and though not always gore-filled, the scenarios are quite frightful such as a naked woman in a freezer room, constantly sprayed with water. Or a man chained to the bottom of a pit, while hogs are liquified and dumped on him...yes you heard right. The scene is enough to make one vomit.

While Jeff is being tested, Jigsaw is on his deathbed, and another test is occuring. Lynn is a doctor who must keep Jigsaw alive or she dies as Jigsaw's apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith, who makes a recurring role from all the Saw films thus far) watches in frustration. Keeping tradition going, you can expect another surprise ending you may not have seen coming, but would say is more predictable than the previous two Saw films. People are being tested in the film, but in the end you begin to realize the bigger picture and what the bigger tests actually are.

Saw 3 does a great job of keeping things in perspective with the prior films, mostly the first Saw, which is fine by me since it is the original and I thought a stronger movie than Saw 2. There are plenty of flashbacks of Amanda, how she became Jigsaw's apprentice, and we even get to see some prequal shots that went into the making of the bathroom scene in Saw. Saw 3 even begins exactly where Saw 2 left, with detective Mathews (Donnie Wahlberg again reprising the role) locked up in that same bathroom.

Saw 3 is a good continuation to the series. The story remains fairly complex, interesting and somewhat unpredictable, though still looses the greatness of the first two movies. If you are looking for blood, gore, and terrifying traps, Saw 3 goes all out this time. I say, just be grateful with your life so you don't have to ever experience them.

    Acting - 3
    Characters - 3.5
    Horror/Gore - 5
    Story - 4
    Overall - 4

  5. I watched the first Saw film and found it disgusting and total trash. I didn't bother with the second but for some reason hoped the third would hold some promise. WRONG!! This new trend of horror/gore-porn is an insult to the horror/thriller genre. This movie was just one disgusting, blood soaked scene after another with no characters worth giving a damn about. It wasn't scary, there wasn't even any real tension. It was just blood and guts for the sake of blood and guts, just like the previous entries in the series. The only reason this franchise continues is because simple minded gore freaks insist on indulging in this kind of schlock cinema. The guys who created the first Saw film might be considered smart as they made a cheap movie and made a ton of money, and I guess that's where we are now. These movies aren't movies. They are products to be trotted out to the waiting public so they can plunk down their money just so the studio can make another and repeat the cycle. Lionsgate must be pretty happy knowing they can release the same movie over and over, year after year and they will always make money because of the simple minded followers they have brain washed. Now they even release special edition, multi-disc DVDs to cash in even more. That fake blood must be expensive, especially when you use it up by the tanker-full. The new breed of 'horror' movie makers, such as Eli Roth and the guys responsible for 'Saw' are not masters of horror, as some would have you think. They are silly children who think blood=fear. I don't expect a lot from a horror movie, but I expected more than this.

  1. Wonderful! the animation and graphics are absolutely brilliant, and the characters and plot are magnificent!

  2. Reviewed by MJ Twain

John Woo and Shinji Aramaki's futuristic tale of cyborgs, bioroids, and humans spotlights the E.S.W.A.T. force of Olympus, a post-apocalyptic city.

Governments from around the world are about to join in a massive satellite-sharing operation. Terrorists attack from unexpected directions, causing turmoil in the city. The core of the E.S.W.A.T. team faces not only their biggest mission, but their most intimate challenge ever. Deunan, a hard-charging human, Briareos, her cyborg partner and love interest, and Tereus, the bioroid fashioned from Briareos's DNA must overcome excruciating obstacles to ensure the peace and safety of not only Olympus, but the world.

The motion-capture technology used for this film is much improved from earlier incarnations. Characters' body movements were the most natural I've seen so far. Unfortunately, the animation style felt far more appropriate to a gaming environment than a movie. My fingers got twitchy in expectation of game play that, of course, never happened. This blended animation style continually pulled me from the story so I could check out where they splurged or skimped on detail (ie: fine facial movements verses chunky locks of hair).

As to the story, I found the love triangle an interesting byplay to the larger situation. A conflicted Deunan deals with two versions of the same man. Set within the bigger frame of a terrifying social meltdown, this emotional situation adds tension to an already difficult day.

For the most part, the story was believable. Certain elements were predictable, but they were presented in a manner that will leave anime fans satisfied.

Hardcore fans might find this film a bit off the pace at times, but, overall, it'll be a fun title to add to your collection.

    4 out of 5 Discs

  3. THe effects were Great! Top Notch all the way. THe story was a little difficult to follow but if you pay attention it is still a great picture! If you like lots of gunfire this is your movie! Check it out!

  4. I enjoyed the 80's version of Appleseed when I was a teenager and when I learned of the Appleseed (Widescreen) (2004) reboot I immediately went out and got myself a copy of the DVD. It was pretty damn good and figured that it was a one-off. But now we have this sequel which proves that there is actually loads of potential and imagination in the Appleseed universe and certainly enough to warrant further sequels.

Denaun Knute and her mostly robotic, rabbit-eared boyfriend Briareos are still working for ESWAT in the Utopian future city of Olympus when a new personal device, a sort cross between a cell phone and a holographic visor, goes haywire and turns the population into a bunch of techno-zombies. Briareos suffers seizures of his own too and a duplicate of his old human form has been recruited to work with them and save the city from this mysterious evil.

Yes, it's nonsense. But entertaining nonsense and a weird cross between Robocop [Blu-ray], Star Trek: First Contact [Blu-ray] and The Ultimate Matrix Collection [Blu-ray]. But the animation is gorgeous and the story and action absurd enough to keep your attention.

Come on, John Woo, give us another 'un.

The Blu Ray features a very nice 1.85:1 1080p transfer with Dolby Digital Plus sound and a decent amount of extras. I recommend.

  5. I've never been a huge fan of John Woo. I think Hard Boiled (1992) is one of the greatest action films ever made, and I liked The Killer (1989), A Better Tomorrow (1986), and Bullet In the Head (1990), but we need to be honest with ourselves and recognize that this guy sold his soul to Hollywood in the mid-1990s and hasn't made a great film since 1992.

He has, however, completely destroyed a sequel to one of the best American movies of recent memory (Mission Impossible) by over-Hollywoodizing a uniquely non-Hollywood film made by Hollywood. That's quite an ironic feat that he should be particularly ashamed of. Now we have Appleseed: Ex Machina (2007) to add to the list of Woo-ish debacles over the past 16 years.

This sequel to the exceptional anime drops the ball in a number of respects, yet still proves to be a marginally entertaining movie. The most obvious fault is that numerous events are near copies of science fiction movies from the West, thus making this endeavor much too conventional for a Japanese anime. In addition, the storyline wasn't as well-conceived as the original. Luckily, this movie has just enough positives to earn a watch. The protagonists are very likable characters, the plot is engaging, and the visuals are very good. The action scenes don't reach the levels of exoticism or quality of the original, but they are still moderately entertaining. In the end this is a very flawed picture that will only satisfy anime action junkies that can look around some mediocre elements.

Now, there were some very specific Woo-ish aspects that really annoyed me. First and foremost are the doves. Yes, there are heaping amounts of flying doves in this Japanese anime film! Why the hell is John Woo so obsessed with doves? Yeah, they provide some ironic symbolism during action scenes, but using them to the degree that he does I have no doubts that he touches himself to pictures of doves when he's alone at night. And the fact that he uses these little birdies in almost every one of his movies proves to be almost as annoying as Rob Zombie's habitual use of white trash folk in his movies. Yes, it's that annoying.

But wait. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions regarding just how much influence Woo had in this watchable (yet severely disappointing) sequel. So I fired up the Special Features option on the DVD menu and watched the 16-minute "Making Of" featurette that focuses specifically on John Woo's influence as a producer. It provided some much needed information regarding just how far this has-been shell of a director has fallen. Let me run down some of the statements made by the Japanese director and producers of this film:

"This is the first time a big time Hollywood director has tried to tackle Japanese Anime."

So Woo isn't even recognized as a director of Chinese cinema anymore. How quaint. No one in this "Making Of" feature even mentioned his Chinese filmography.

"Japanese producers wanted to expand into the Western market and saw that working with John Woo would be a good match."

Nice. If your name is dropped by someone as the foremost expert in Hollywoodization, would you really take that as a compliment? Man, this guy has really hit rock bottom.

"John brought his years of experience in Hollywood to it."

Well, he certainly brought all of the negatives of Hollywood cinema to this production. That was obvious from watching the movie. How many times do you see a Japanese Anime film copy scenes from I Robot and The Matrix Revolutions? Yes, it's really, really pathetic.

The most enlightening statement was with regards to the preliminary Japanese storyboards.

"John took a look at it and came up with some really great notes."

What was particularly hilarious about this statement is that on-screen you see John Woo's head shaking in a disapproving, almost disgusted manner while watching the initial storyboards. It's almost like he's saying to himself, "This is way too Japanese for an American audience. We need more slow-mo shots and conventional elements to reach a wider audience and make more money." Nice job Johnny boy.

Director Shinji Aramaki apparently conceived Ex Machina to be nothing more than a tribute to Woo's work. He says:

"We devised the Cathedral scene before John showed up to pay homage to his work."

It's really too bad that Aramaki was so accommodating to implementing all of Woo's ideas into the film. It effectively crippled a movie that should have been as good as the original.

I hate to say it, but John Woo is a no-talent has-been who has only harmed the international film industry since making Hard Boiled in 1992. I have no problems with him making tripe in America. Heck, that's what American cinema is for. But don't you DARE to take your new-found money-grubbing mediocrity to Japanese anime - one of the most unconventional genres of cinema in the world today.

Someone needs to stop this guy before he attempts to wreck another Asian movie.

  1. I am glad that I 'flixed this film before purchasing. It was entertaining, but I have little desire to see it again. There were several holes in the story and the characters were flat and uninteresting. The theme could have been made into a great sci-fi anime series and I hope that this will be the next step, that and going to a hand drawn style rather than CG.

If you want to see a CG film that is just as pretty (or more so) then check out FF7 Advent Children. Guaranteed to rock your world!

Pros: Pretty CG, action, good theme and story
Cons: lots of loose plot threads, dull characters, too short, needed fleshing out

Viewing preference: Japanese with english subtitles

  2. This was very enjoyable and satisfying.

The case is the finest I have ever seen.

The content on the bonus disk is fantastic too...

This entire work says, very simply: "Someone Cared Enough to pay attention to everything and get it right."

The few criticisms that one might have over it not being exactly like the original Appleseed VHS back in the day, can be addressed by saying simply that it is 2008 not 1988.

The fact that the story, character design, and over all impact of the original work was retained is good enough for me.

The new take on this material is fresh from every perspective, without destroying what was truly the core of the original Anime.

I have watched this 3 times since purchasing it and it is beautiful and exciting.

Worth every penny. I'm just picked up the Appleseed ExMachina collectors edition also. I'm excited to watch it.

    :D

  3. Mind blowing... It is just AMAZING the kind of animation achieve on this ANIME/movie. Watch it! Own it!!! It reminds me of my ROBOTECH days...

  4. By the end there just wasn't enough to keep me entertained and I found myself growing bored with it very quickly. The break neck action and interesting concepts were fun at first but by the end, I really felt like I needed more and this feature wasn't going to provide it. If you were a fan of the manga, you'll probably be a fan of this feature as well but otherwise this is really just a release for people who are looking for some decent mech action without much story to bog you down.

  5. I recently discovered the Appleseed movies a month ago. I had seen the film VEXILLE which was made by the same person who did the 2nd and 3rd Appleseed films. After I was blown away by the mix of hand drawn animation and CGI, I knew I had to check out his other film work. I was even more blown away by APPLESEED and APPLESEED EX MACHINA.

It is 2131, there is one city left remaining on Earth called Olympus. Humans and bioroids (artificial clones) appears to co-exist peacefully. All is not well underneath the idyllic surface. The existence of bioroids have angered some humans thus leading to the destruction of a government building that contained third generation bioroids. The destruction of the building also means doom for bioroids who needs a life extension like Deunan's friend Hitomi.

Deunan Knute, a tough as nails female soldier and her ex-boyfriend Briareos, who is 75% machine and the other members of the ESWAT team needs to retrieve the lost Appleseed technology to help Hitomi and the rest of Olympus, and put a kibosh on the growing threat of the military.

I personally loved this film. The action was non-stop. The animation was awesome. I love the combination of hand drawn animation and CGI. The techno soundtrack fits perfectly into the setting of the film. I personally enjoyed the storyline.

  1. As you may have heard, this movie is beyond bad.

I will mention the bad acting of the original characters that will ruin any good opinion you ever had of them. And I love them all, have all movies, series, etc. But please spare yourself this desecration.

And Adrian Paul looks like he's going to hit 50 any minute.
Keep the memories in your dreams and skip this!

  2. Finally, they've made a Highlander movie worse than Highlander 2! The plot and details make so little sense. The supporting actress is not attractive enough to be in this type of film. The location is cheap and ugly. The characters are not sympathetic, not even MacLeod. Terrible camera work and horribly lame and shallow ending that manages to ruin the whole Highlander concept at the same time.

But if it means another Highlander paycheck for Adrian Paul, then so be it. He really does deserve it for all the work he's done for the franchise so I honestly don't mind the 2 hours and $1 that were robbed from my life.

  3. This movie was VERY, VERY, VERY bad. Not even worth one star but I had no choice. The acting, the sets, the story, the action and the flow of the movie is just awful. Seriously....anyone who says that this is a decent film does not know movies at all. This is an abomination of the whole franchise. I've watched better episodes from the TV series than this crap. The sets were so corny and fake looking. The budget must of been 3 million because that's what it looked like. This movie was cheaply done and it shows in every aspect. They should be ashamed of themselves for sending this rubbish to fans. I don't get it...it's 2008. The old story is so outdated. Here is a idea, REBOOT the character/franchise. Start over and do an epic movie with good writers and a good budget. Please, please do the first one over and start from there. WITH CONNER MACLEOD.

  4. This is a wierd movie and there are many more questions that need to be answered. I am glad that I got this DVD here and not at Wal-Mart. I saved lots of money because the shipping was free with another item. Movie is good but I need more Highlander.

  5. Sometimes I just wonder what the heck is going through the minds of some writers, directors, and producers.

This most recent installment of Highlander is so very odd. It added a few cool new elements to the Highlander mythology, including two new immortals who are completely outside the "game", some additional background, and a slightly futuristic spin. There were a few good special effects (and a lot of awful special effects). Some of the action sequences were pretty decent, others were awful.

Yet, after watching it, I still don't have any idea what the h*ll the movie was about. Truly bizarre.

To answer a common question, Adrian Paul stars in this installment, but Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery had the good sense to stay away from this one. Peter Wingfield, however, is an accomplished actor, and did a decent job here as an addition to the Highlander cast.

  1. However there is one thing that upsets me . In the promotion page indeed there exist the promise of spanish language of subtitles, but none of this was true. To Amazon one advice. You dont need to lie for sell. This show is great and id purchased anyway, but please once again, you dont need to lie and deception your clients. Thanks!

  2. Having the original MegaSet of Space: 1999, I was hoping to have 'extras' on the 30th Anniversary MegaSet DVD's. The DVD containers have been changed and condensed, but otherwise the offerings are the same as the original MegaSet -- the addded 'Bonus Disc' is the same that has been available at all the Space: 1999 Conventions since 2005. The 'Special Features' throughout the MegaSet are the same as on the original MegaSet. It would have been "special" if the Anniversary MegaSet had 'bloopers', 'behind the scenes' that weren't on the original MegaSet DVD's, et al. A purchase of this MegaSet is more for nostalgia and to support the continuing life (after cancellation) of Space: 1999.

  3. The series was a real landmark at its time: it inspired several subsequent SciFi series and movies. For example, watch the episode Dragon's Domain and you will feel like an Alien predecessor.
Of course that some technology shown is now old fashioned, but consider it as a Vintage series.
Also it was originally exhibited with Star Trek, so it was very difficult to be more known to the great public.
Here in Brazil it took long to appear in the 80's, but I did not miss a episode.
Only a remark: the first year is far better than the second!

  4. Great video quality. Small package..big series..!!!! The only "problem" is the series doesn't have subtitles... But is a Great TV SERIES.. Good special effects ( for the time ) Excellent stories..

  5. Sadly, despite all the hype, this was one of the worst television SF series since Captain Video.

From the impossible initial premise (Moon suddenly becomes interstellar ship when nuclear waste dumps ignite and somehow turn into a star drive.) to the complete lack of logic (Why would a base on the airless Moon have standard backpacking gear?) to an utter ignorance of physics, astronomy and probably every other branch of science: The Moon is apparently traveling at Star Trek-level warp speeds as it seems to be in a different star system every week...with no noticeable effects on the locals..like sudden massive tides, collisions with asteroids etc.

The plots were even sillier and the acting gives a whole new meaning to "wooden".

It did have good sets and costumes, I'll give it that and their hand weapons, which looked a bit like futuristic staple-guns were kind of cool but beyond that, watch it for the laughs and only buy it if you're a TV completist or need something to balance the collection of "Starlost" you also picked up. ;)

Otherwise, wait until someone finally releases "Capt. Simian and the Space Monkeys!", an intentionally funny and surprisingly good TV SF series, especially compared to "Space:1999".

  1. Well, the shipping was very quick, and the product was definitely what was ordered, but the inside plastic was broken, and that scratched a few of the disks. Not badly, they were still playable, but we had to get little paper cases so that the disks would be save and we could still keep them in the box.

Kind of disappointing, but altogether it wasn't awful.

  2. It may not be as hilarious as the second and first season but it's a must-have. Really! If you're a 3rd Rock fan you just have to have it!
All in all, great season, and a great show (my favourite, personally).

  3. This is a great comedy. John Lithgow was amazing in this series. There's nothing more you can say than it's just hilarious.

  4. We have all the season's and we love to be able to watch the shows in order.

  5. I didn't get too into this show when it was actually on the air, but now that I've had time to watch the shows on DVD, I've really fallen in love with it. If you follow the theory that we already have aliens here on earth, then it becomes a little more meaningful. But that aside, the show is hilarious. The acting is top notch, and some of the best I've ever seen on a television show. This crew's talent is really outstanding. One of my all time favorite shows. I suggest you buy all six seasons, as you get addicted to them!

5 comments about Dungeons and Dragons- Wrath of the Dragon God (Widescreen Edition).
  1. I really liked this movie, It first came out on Sci Fi Channel so it was a low budget sci fi channel movie. But over all it was a lot better then the first one. The first one had a 100 mill dollar budget and it sucked. This movie was pretty cool done very will and fun to watch, Lionsgate / sci fi (NBC) done a lot better with a low budget. They actually followed what a group of adventurers
world be doing during a advurage adventure. It brung me back to the old days of DnD.

  2. This is one of the better Dungeons and Dragons type movies. The story, cast, effects , and music are all good. Typically at least two of those things fail in many of them. I sat through the whole movie without any wretching or desire to leave the room, which was a pleasant surprise. The story centers around a retired captain of the guard taking command of a group of five champions to fight an evil wizard. The group is comprised of the captain, a female warrior, a male thief, a female wizard, and a male cleric. The characters are well developed during their journey together and work well together. Initially with the right amount of friction and later trusting each other with their life and limb literally. A nice mix of mythical creatures, and the effects were as good as any I have seen. If you enjoy fantasy movies like "Stardust", "Earthsea", and "George and the Dragon", I recommend it. The only thing missing was a little humor. Good quality DVD and replayability.

  3. another low budget B 'dragon' movie. You can watch for D&D sake. I think D&D has a greater universe than Eragon or HP as a fantastic world. needs a good script and director and of course big budget.

  4. I'm a bit perplexed that this movie is receiving all of the five star reviews. I watched this last night to preview it prior to showing it to my children since it doesn't have a rating. Parent's don't fear... it's a PG movie. No profanity, only a tiny bit of blood and entirely unbelievable special effects. For those of you who watched the first movie, this one is different, I'm not sure I would say "Better." The special effects in the first were better, these were 100% made for TV effects, so don't go into this movie expecting incredible dragons and unbelievable spells. Unlike the first movie, this one DID follow the rules of the D&D game much more closely, though they still took several liberties. For example Dragons in the game are supposed to be far smarter than humans and capable of speaking in just about any language they like... here they are just large beasts with sharp teeth that are quite easily killed. There was a Lich in this movie... although it's quite easy to tell he's just a guy in a bad mask. I really didn't enjoy this movie. It was boring, the acting was along the lines of a daytime soap, the FX were laughable on some occasions, the plot was alright but didn't really do much for me. This may have been better as a mini series if they had fleshed out more of the steps in their journey. As parents we still aren't sure if we are going to let the kids watch it... not because it's inappropriate, but because we are afraid they might like it and we might have to sit through it several more times. I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend this movie to anyone other than the most die hard D&D fans.

  5. Stuipd movie.
I am a D&D gamer for seven years now,and have no intensions to stop playing, so I could understand the way iconic monsters, spells and game mechnics were waved into the plot.
Thing is, this movie is so bad that it made me angry. It is becuse of things such as "Wrath of the dragon god" that D&D is underastimated by many people. The plot was infantile, the charcters so boering that as a DM I would have killed their players just for the intension to play them.
Another issiue was that the charcters had no in game logic- I remember a scene where the fighter (who is, of course, the leader) send the wizard to the front line of a large meele battle, to cover him while he solves a riddle. C'ommon, guys! if you want to call a movie "D&D" than at least try to make it feel like a real game.
