2 comments about Strategic Patent Planning for Software Companies; A Look at Current Patent and Licensing Strategies.
- The PDF is 56 pages long. The text starts on p. 7. There are 5 pages of ads at the end.
- I understand the reviewer's comment that the book is shorter than he expected. And perhaps it is also true that it is a teaser for Stasik's longer book. However, this short one is an excellent overview of the author's position on how software patents should be used strategically, giving perhaps a dozen uses including the obvious one.
I also found the analysis of how the Apache Software Foundation blew it and Microsoft achieved the goal, of encouraging small companies to innovate over their patented platforms. And the difference was just a few words in a legal phrase.
I recommend the book provided you do realize it is short, but quite concise.
A review of the longer Stasik book lamented the inclusion of only two case histories and I would agree with that for the longer work, but the two examples in this book are appropriate for its length.

1 comments about Conducting A Business Impact Analysis.
- The document is 9 pages long. When I pay for any publication that's $1 per page I expect the contents to be of the first order. This document though, has 1 page of contents, 1 of justification for BIA, and 2 of information that's easily obtainable in 5 seconds using a search engine on the web (I.E. names of DR journals and links).
So the meat of the topic is covered in 5 pages. These 5 pages are fairly high level, and give the sort of information that easily obtained from any specialist publication (the document even uses the Disaster Recovery Journal as a source). In summary this belongs as a article in a trade magazine, and overall is poor value for money. If I could I would ask for a refund.

2 comments about Developing a Gap Analysis.
- "Gap Analysis" seems to be a buzz word being tossed around for some time. I thought that this article would provide an example of how a gap anaylsis works. Not to give away any secrets (as if there are any!), it basically walks you through an overview of protecting your system.
This is something you would give upper management. It has it's place, that why I gave it one star. It isn't technical - it really doesn't give an explaination of Gap Analysis. Search the web ... for a better idea and save your money.
- I thought it will be a stuff, but not. I should have read the previous review. I would not recommand this article or book. It's 9 pages article and it does not hold much information.

- There's not much to this. It is not worth the $9, even to someone who only needs a basic overview.

1 comments about Introduction to SIP IP Telephony Systems: Technology Basics, Services, Economics, and Installation.
- This book tries to dumb-down SIP. It looks like it wants to be a training manual for a "Learning SIP" course, but doesn't provide any real technical detail. It is poorly written and a tedious read.
This is the first sentance:
"SIP is a standardized technology that allows for the sending of voice, data, and video between communication devices on public (e.g. Internet) or private (e.p. local area networks) data networks."
... and it doesn't get any better after that.
SIP Demystified by Gonazlo Camarillo is a much better read. It is engaging and well written, providing useful information for IT engineers, managers and technologists.

5 comments about The Budget Kit : The Common Cents Money Management Workbook.
- I love this book! It's well organized and easy to use. Although budgeting may involve things you already know this is a clear way to really follow through with your budget.
- This kit really helped me turn my overspending around, simply by laying it all out helpfully on a page. I've used copies of this book for seven years; for the first few years I filled out the budget-planning worksheets and all that, but for the past few years I've only been using the monthly expenditures worksheets, which are worth their weight in gold. They tell you where the money actually went, helpfully broken down into a lot of categories. There's a double spread in the back where you can track your expenses in each category across the year (and I've added in my averages from the previous 6 years, so I can really track across time). This alone is such a great motivator! So I think this is an incredibly useful book even for those who don't want or need the various specialty worksheets on debt, assets, and so forth. It makes managing money easy and, dare I say it, fun.
- I got this for my husband and I...we have not put it to use. I thought it would be an easy read, but it's just not up our alley. I wanted something more for the simple minded...LOL.
- I've used other budget books before, but this was much more extensive. I really liked the catagory breakdowns, I thought they were much more realistic for my lifestyle. To really use this book fully would take a bit of time, but that's probably good if your looking for budget help anyway.
- When your trying to set up a budget the last thing you want is a bunch of worksheets, and numbers. That's all this book is, worksheet after worksheet, that you end up half using since there are so many spaces that you don't need to use. My recommendation to those that want to set up a simple budget, add all up of your bills for the month, than divide by four. You'll get the total of how much you need to set aside a week to pay your bills. Than add your weekly expenses to that number, such as groceries, gas, and so on. You'll end up with the amount you need to make weekly to make ends meet.
