2 comments about Strategic Patent Planning for Software Companies; A Look at Current Patent and Licensing Strategies.
  1. The PDF is 56 pages long. The text starts on p. 7. There are 5 pages of ads at the end.

  2. I understand the reviewer's comment that the book is shorter than he expected. And perhaps it is also true that it is a teaser for Stasik's longer book. However, this short one is an excellent overview of the author's position on how software patents should be used strategically, giving perhaps a dozen uses including the obvious one.

I also found the analysis of how the Apache Software Foundation blew it and Microsoft achieved the goal, of encouraging small companies to innovate over their patented platforms. And the difference was just a few words in a legal phrase.

I recommend the book provided you do realize it is short, but quite concise.

A review of the longer Stasik book lamented the inclusion of only two case histories and I would agree with that for the longer work, but the two examples in this book are appropriate for its length.

1 comments about Creating RFPs for IP Telephony Communication Systems; PBX, IP Telephony, and IP Centrex System and Services.
  1. This proved to be very useful in developing our RFP for our new IP telephony systems. It was our first time using this technology and the terminology really helped us become educated buyers. I highly recommend this book for anyone considering adopting this technology in their business.

5 comments about Introduction to IP Telephony: Why and How Companies are Upgrading Private Telephone Systems to use VoIP Services.
  1. This was a good starter book. While it had some technical stuff in it, the diagrams really helped me explain this technology to my staff.

  2. Do NOT buy this PDF if you are a serious professional and want to work for VoIP. You will waste your money buying this and waste your time reading this. I do not think I can give even one star to this book. However Amazon does not accept review if I do not give at least one star hence I have give that rating.

  3. This is a good introductory book for Telecom people who are looking to get into IP Telephony. The diagrams are good and the explanation are easy to understand.I even talked to the author and he was helpful.

  4. As an expert in rare violins with extensive experience at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Antiques Roadshow, I always thought I was able to telephony. Turns out I didn't know the first thing about it! Live and learn, I always say. Thanks for opening my eyes, Mr. Harte.

  5. While writing for my thesis on "VoIP for SME's", I read a couple of VoIP books. The book from Mr. Harte is very brief (and the layout/cover is not very attractive, it seems very outdated). Considering the price of the book, it has a very bad price/info ratio. If you want to read a primer, I would recommend VoIP for dummies. For more advanced reading, try Voice over packet networks from Wright (you need to know the fundamentals, before you read this one!).

2 comments about Introduction to IP Television; Why and How Companies are Providing Television Through Data Networks.
  1. This book waste a page to explain: download speed = file size/bit rate even with ilustration (WOW). The rest of the book has the same technical level.
Amazon, dont you check what you sell?

  2. This was a good introduction book. While there is some technical descriptions in it, it is easy to understand the diagrams helped me to explain how it works to my staff. There are so many new terms and acronyms for IPTV, if you are just getting involved in IPTV, this book is a good start.

1 comments about Introduction to SIP IP Telephony Systems: Technology Basics, Services, Economics, and Installation.
  1. This book tries to dumb-down SIP. It looks like it wants to be a training manual for a "Learning SIP" course, but doesn't provide any real technical detail. It is poorly written and a tedious read.

    This is the first sentance:

"SIP is a standardized technology that allows for the sending of voice, data, and video between communication devices on public (e.g. Internet) or private (e.p. local area networks) data networks."

... and it doesn't get any better after that.

SIP Demystified by Gonazlo Camarillo is a much better read. It is engaging and well written, providing useful information for IT engineers, managers and technologists.

1 comments about Introduction to EVDO: Radio Channels, Logical Channels, and Network Operation.
  1. This book (if you can call it that) contains nothing useful to a communications professional (who else would want to know about ev-do?); the coverage and explanation is at the high school level at best, and I spotted at least one error in a two-minute glance. A high school student might use the general description for a class project or paper, and even that is a stretch.
