Green edited and published the articles, presented in the Fifth International Seminar on Buddhism and Leadership for Peace on the theme of "Exploration of Ways to Put Buddhist Thought into Social Practice for Peace and Justice." Of more than 40 presentation papers, the editors selected and included the excellent 28 articles in the book. The articles investigate peace and justice, both of which are sublime and never-ending human obligations, from various Buddhist traditions. I think that the book most comprehensively covers Buddhist application of peace and justice in my understanding. I strongly recommend prospective readers to read this book in order to build up a peaceful society in this troubled society.

1. A very useful introduction to the Baha'i Faith for Buddhists who come from a Theravada Buddhist background which represents what is probably the oldest and largest extant grouping of Buddhists generally found in a large area stretching from Sri Lanka to Burma, Thailand and into Southeast Asia.

   The Baha'i scriptures acknowledge the divine station of Lord Buddha which means that everyone who becomes a Baha'i needs also to believe in the Buddha.

   The ethical and moral teachings of the Baha'i Faith and Buddhism are very similar. During the course of thousands of years, the author states that there have been from time to time and in different parts of the world a small number of fully enlighted ones whose mission has been to guide humanity in its spiritual and social affairs. The author describes how Baha'is believe that Baha'u'llah is the fulfillment of the prophecies in Buddhist scripture, i.e. the Metteyya.

   The same author has also written good introductory books about Islam and the Baha'i Faith and Hinduism and the Baha'i Faith.

PALI BUDDHISM: This work is co-edited by an American professor of philosophy and religion and by a Sri Lankan Buddhist monk who received academic training in the history of religions in the United States. The three sections of the book are: PHILOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS, INSIDER'S UNDERSTANDINGS, and PHILOSOPHICAL IMPLICATIONS. The focus in on early Indian Theravada Buddhism in the Pali tradition.

   The FOREWORD is by Ninian Smart. The INTRODUCTION by Hoffman and Deegalle offers a historical overview of the significance of Pali Buddhist Studies and its historical background. It also provies a discussion of comparative philosophy as it relates to Pali Buddhism, and explains the rationale for this particular volume.

   CONTRIBUTORS INCLUDE: George D. Bond, Andrew Olendzki, Subramania Gopalan, Christopher Key Chapple, Deegalle Mahinda, Padmasiri DeSilva, A.D.P. Kalansuriya, Gunapala Dharmasiri, Arthur L. Herman, Ramakrishna Puligandla, Shanta Ratnayaka, Ninian Smart, and Frank J. Hoffman.

This book supplies something hard to find: a presentation of the daily lives and routine of the original Buddhist monks, as much as we can get, based on solid research, good translations, and a clear understanding of the Buddha's teachings. It is presented in a style that is not overburdened with technical language or jargon. Tremendously useful and pleasant to read. Here is what they wore, what they ate, how they got it, why they were instructed to travel, and how the monastic code (Vinaya) was interpreted as times changed.

1. This book is an interesting and readable account of the origins and evolution of Buddhism. The author uses his extensive knowledge of the allegorical nature of the ancient texts to clarify many of Buddhism's more cryptic recounts as well as to explain the apparent disparities between modern Buddhist traditions which so confound scholars. If you are a student of Buddhism at any level, or would like to be, this book will really open your eyes.
