  1. As an ex-JW I have read a lot of books about the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. This isn't the best one. Not only do the author's scorn and bitterness weaken his writing (for instance an excessive use of quotation marks sprinkled freely on each page and a lack of editing), but it seemd to me he just doesn't have enough distance yet to have really healed. Make no mistake, JW's are definitely into mind control, and they are really cruel in many ways. But if you are an ex-JW looking for support and understanding, or a non-JW curious about this organization, a better book might be "Visions of Glory." Also, there is a wise website, virushead.net, with a more mature, compassionate response to the Watchtower organization.

  2. Richard Shiningthunder Francis has managed to pen the most comprehensive treatment of the mind-control tactics employed by the Watchtower Society, as well as a cogent treatment of their major doctrines. This is no dull dry "autopsy" written by a clinician wearing a white smock and rubber gloves. This is a heartfelt look into the black heart of the Watchtower Society and their hapless victims the Jehovah's Witnesses.

Richard was raised a Jehovah's Witness, therefore he has more than earned the right to be heard. What he gives us is both deeply informative--written as it is by one who suffered firsthand--and often downright funny! Richard has a keenly developed sense of irony and humor, and he manages to transmute the lead of his unfortunate Watchtower cult experiences into purest gold.

There is no filler here, no wasted space, no repetition. Insight follows insight with a power that no other book in this genre can boast of. He covers the entire gamut of the Orwellian world of Jehovah's Witnesses, their spying, their mind-control, their doctrinal flip-flops, their "lying for the truth" and every aspect of life (if you can call being a JW "life") as a Jehovah's Witness. Through it all Richard manages to elcit smiles and laughter. Former JWs, such as myself, will love this book and cherish it.

This is a very special book, in fact it's unique in this genre. I give it five stars and two thumbs up. You'll refer back to it again and again, just as I have.

2 comments about Falling in Truth: The Education of a Jehovah\'s Witness.
  1. A young man falls headlong into religious zeal at an age when he should be falling in love. He meets a wise old elder and falls deeper into the truth about religion. But he also meets a young woman and falls in love. When tragedy strikes he discovers a fatal conflict between his religion and his love, and he is forced to make a life-altering choice.

This is a book that will help people understand the lifestyle and thinking of Jehovah's Witnesses. It also gives practicing Witnesses a great deal to ponder. Although this is a novel, it is based on real-life experiences and delves more deeply and objectively into religious beliefs than many non-fiction works on the subject.

Some comments I have received from readers over the years:

It is seldom I read something as stimulating as your book, Steve! I couldn't put it down. It is as revealing as having read Letters from Earth by Mark Twain, or the two books by Ray Franz. It's too bad I didn't discover intelligent reading material such as your book sooner.
    -CT -- Former JW elder

I want to thank you for writing that book, I recognize so very much of what I believed and felt... it has made clearer all that I have been trying to word myself.
    -NN

You did a remarkable job of stuffing the entire JW experience into one set of events. Chapters 5 and 7 should be mandatory reading for Witnesses... Thanks. It's good reading.
    -FT

I am astounded by the amount of research and investigation it must have taken you to write this story... I have a lot more to think about regarding why we are here, and life in general. But the real benefit I got from your book is an increased empathy for other people, no matter what their belief. And for this, I thank you! You have a real talent for writing, and your dialogue kept me glued to the screen (I read it online). I must say, I can totally relate to the feelings your character "Ted" was having.
    -J.S.

I found it to offer quite a roller-coaster ride emotionally. It is excellent! I was surprised at how strongly I was gripped by the plight of "fictional" characters... I must have recognized bits of dozens of people I knew as I grew up.
    --J.

  2. Never before have I been so amazed by an author who obviously did much research to make a writing as detailed and genuine as "Falling in Truth."

This is a true work of genius. The compelling storyline deals with subjects and characters not covered in mainstream print. Not only are the characters so real that you may recognize your friends, or even yourself, but the situations in which they find themselves are true to life, and even humorous at times.

This book stimulates deep thought over the big questions of life, and self-examination of what we really know about "truth" and our beliefs, from the perspective of a youth entering the most decisive years of his life. Seekers of truth, of all faiths, will find this book most rewarding.

1 comments about 10 Steps Toward Emotional Recovery After Being a Jehovah's Witness.
  1. This book is a must read for anyone who ever used to be, still is, or knows someone that is one of Jehovah's Witness.
For years my husband has not understood fully the emotional scars that I have carried around from being a part of this religion. But since he has read the book himself he has a better comprehension of the fears and behaviors associated with being left in the destructive quake of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. If you don't already have a copy, I would advise getting yours today.
