5 comments about Island of the Sequined Love Nun.
  1. If you compute the arithmetic mean of Christopher Moore's work, you will arrive at this book. (I mean that in the best possible way.) The cargo cult aspect of it is what makes this novel memorable and I like to compare it as the complete opposite take on that phenomenon (i.e., cargo cults) as Gibson's approach in "Hinterlands".

Anyway: good beach read. Or for on the plane. (Well, maybe not the plane.)

  2. I don't ask for much when I take a vacation. I want a Pina Colada with an extra shot and a book that will make me laugh. Out loud, if possible.

That's why I always take Chris Moore along with me. Island of the Sequined Love Nun made me laugh out loud too many times to count but enough to give this book five stars and a debt of gratitude to the author. What I like about Moore is he delivers. Consistently.

The plot has been endlessly recounted here, so I won't add my take except to say that I think what I like best about this author's writing is how he seamlessly encapsulates profound philosophical insights with a maximum amount of humor and compassion. It's not unusual in a Christopher Moore book to find yourself laughing out loud one minute and stifling a lump in your throat the next.

Writing comedy of this caliber is extremely hard to do. Chris Moore is today's phenom, never having, I would imagine, to write another word in this lifetime if he doesn't want to.

Hopefully he wants to. I can't imagine a vacation without him.

    Five stars. Great read!

  3. Loved Lamb. This is my second Moore book. Though I didn't find it nearly as funny as Lamb, I certainly enjoyed it and would recommend it. It's a great story with great characters and takes place in a fascinating and unique setting. I also feel like I learned a lot and will share many of the facts with others, whether they are true or not.

I will definitely read more Moore.

  4. "Lamb" was my first Moore exposure. And what a treat. "...Love Nun" is no Lamb and as the saying goes, once bitten, twice shy. This is not what I'm looking for to occupy my reading time.

  5. Firstly, I bought most of these for someone I thought was a friend. But, eventually, my husband and I got a few by this author and we LOVED this book. So engaging and funny!
