- I switched from gotomypc which was easy to connect 2 PC's but it kept messing up files in the database. So I bought PcAnywhere 12.1 which will NOT connect at all==shows "Waiting for ....
I loaded the PCAnywhere on both the mac and the Parallels side of the Macbookpro running XP pro (HOSTS) and the remote. Maybe I have having trouble because I am using a Airport Extreme router which automatically assigns a 10.0.1.1.. IP address. I had 2 network guys working on this. The hotline said to have Roadrunner configure ports to 5631 and 5632 but roadrunner has all ports open and do not reconfigure. My network guys reconfigured ports and also forwarded them to the 66.....IP address - still no luck.
Will try a Linksys router next. Wasted tons of time.

- I bought this software for my company and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm based in Seattle, but my servers and VRU's are located in New York City. Whenever there's been a problem I've been able to log right in and get the job done.

5 comments about NETGEAR VPN01L ProSafe VPN Client Software 1-User License.
- I've been searching around for IPSec VPN software that would be compatible with my Netgear FVS318(v1) Firewall/Router before I decided to buy Netgear's VPN01L. I came across three (3) others that were known to work without any problems. I've tried their 30-day trials and came to one conclusion. They're all proven difficult to set up, especially if you don't know much about setting up VPN tunnels (I'm relatively new to it). So the final decision came down to just buying Netgear's VPN01L client software since it was cheaper. And since I'm only using it to connect to my 3-server home LAN (FTP-WEBserver/eMAIL server/Programming server) from work or on the road, I felt it was a wise choice on my part. Install didn't take but a mere 15-minutes. The only part that was difficult (as said before) was the actual set up to get it connecting to the VPN router. Netgear's documentation for the VPN01L was horrible I'll admit that. The example screenshots of the config screens did not even match what was described in the text itself. Which left me confused, thus, resulting in no VPN connection.
But what I did was bring up a .PDF I ran into a while back which shows you how to configure a Netgear FVS318 and a SAFENet SoftRemote VPN Client (which is what Netgear's VPN01L software actually is). So I used that PDF to configure my router and VPN client and had it connecting in no time. :)
If anyone is interested in that .PDF just do a GOOGLE search for, "SafeNet Softremote+FVS318", and you should find the .PDF link for "Connecting a SafeNet SoftRemote VPN Client to a Netgear FVS318".
You'll be glad you did.
All in all, I'm very happy with the Netgear VPN01L Client software. It works great with my FVS318 (which I've had for about 5 years now, and it's still going strong). The only two gripes I have with it are the lousy setup documentation and the fact that I lose my other connections on the Internet when the tunnel is active (unless there's a setting to change that behavior that I haven't figured out yet). ... Hence the 3-stars.
- Few clicks during the first installation, blue screen..... It killed my networks (Ethernet & Wireless) configuration. Very poor quality. Never consider it for your business.
- Unfortunately I had to return because I use the Cisco VPN at work and needed this to be compatible. It was very easy to set up but I had to uninstall the VPN client when I need to run my Cisco VPN client and then reeninstall the Netgear VPN client when I want to run it.
- I had no problems at all. Worked jus the way we needed it to.
- I think the title about says it all. I couldn't get the software to work with my Netgear router so I called support. Since my router was out of warranty, they wouldn't provide me support even though I just purchased the software from Amazon the week before. They indicated that had I purchased it from them, they would support it. (I'll check tomorrow, but I think I have a newer router elsewhere that I can use to get support).
However...even if I can get it to work, I didn't see that it doesn't work with Vista. Luckily, I have an XP computer I can fail to get it to work on. (I can't fail on the Vista computer since it won't even install).
Needless to say, I'm somewhat disappointed. The only document that describes how to get it to work with the router I have is inaccurate (and overly complicated) and in the end...failed to set up the software in some way that would make it connect to the router.

4 comments about Grisoft AVG Internet Security 3-User 2-Year Family Edition.
- I have been through the lot! THIS IS THE BEST COMPREHENSIVE SECURITY SUITE I EVER HAD! And I had them all...(well, almost)
For years I sweared by NORTON - until two years ago it got so heavy and demanding it slowed my computer to a crawl. Then I gave McAFEE Internet Security a try which, although lighter, pestered me with pop-up messages. When that license expired I gave KASPERSKY Internet Security a try: real secure feeling and detailed settings control; however, a number of internet applications, although given full internet access, were slowed to a trickle.
About a month ago I downloaded the AVG INTERNET SECURITY as a 30-day trial. Not two weeks had passed and I decided that THIS IS THE ONE!
Light, heuristically effective (it even found a malware that KASPESKY failed to locate - and KASPERSKY has the best reputation on cleaning out everything!), no conflicts, email integration (although not with ThunderBird yet, a minor glitch), excellent AI and quiet.
It may seem a bit pricey, yet keep in mind that it comes with a 2 YEAR license, not the usual 12 months that most other Security applications come with.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
UPDATE [April 26, 2008]: AVG offered the FREE option to upgrade to v8.0 for the remainder of the license to every customer that had bought v7.5. Now, THIS is a company that knows how to built customer loyalty!
- I purchased AVG Internet Security after trying the free version and testing another anti-virus program. I find AVG easy to set up and use, and generally I like the interface. The reason for my not-so-glowing review is twofold:
1) I have the program set up so it scans web pages for 'bad stuff.' The problem is that on a Google search page, it has to scan all the linked pages the search found and this take a bit of time.
2) More serious is the fact that I've used their tech support online form almost a dozen times in the last three weeks to get some simple questions answered (including how to deal with the issue above), and they have never contacted me. More frustrating is the fact that the web site has no phone or email contacts that you can easily find. I finally sent a nasty email to someone there, but if this serious lack of support continues, I'll look for another anti-virus program when its time to renew.
David
- To start, I have not purchased their software but have been using their free downloadable version on an old work computer. And there is a good reason I never upgraded and bought their subscription and would not recommend this company. This invasive software not only bogged down my computer to an extent I have never experienced before (and I have used several of the other big name AV software products over the years) but I cannot get rid of it! I have tried using the standard Windows removal of applications process as well as trying to delete the program directly, and it always generates some kind of error message stating that the files cannot be accessed. I have copied the errors and tried contacting the company (could not find a phone # on their website after an exhaustive search) by email from their website with no response or help. I would encourage anyone thinking of investing in this product to check out their website and see if you can contact anyone to get an idea of what kind of customer support you can expect. In my experience, there is absolutely none, and I would encourage you to look elsewhere for your AV needs.
- No doubt AVG's Internet Security Program is by far the best - exceeds Norton, far exceeds McAfee and the rest - Amazon's 3 pack 2 - year edition price is the best value around!

1 comments about Computrace LoJack for Laptops: 3 Year Subscription.
- YEAH, it really does work, we purchased this for our company of over 3,500 laptops and it reduced our loss rate from almost 100 notebooks a year to less than 10.
We've dissected this software and know how it works, but we aren't going to detail the guts in a public forum to help thieves disable it. Instead, we're going to assure you this stuff is hard to remove and most laptop thieves don't know this technology exists, or what to look for -until the police comes to arrest them.
This is essentially a piece of "spyware" because it is resident system agent that runs with the OS but will also embed itself into the MBR and the BIOS on some systems. Check with Absolute software to verify if your model number has BIOS support.
It will contact a monitoring center on a daily basis by modem, LAN or even cellular, whatever network connection to the Internet you have, this software will connect to the monitoring center with a basic "hello" packet so the source IP address is recorded. The modem uses a 1-800 number and caller ID can't be blocked from toll free numbers because the US Supreme Court ruled years ago their right to billing supersedes your right to privacy and since the owner of a toll free number is paying the toll,,, voila they get your phone number.
Scenario:
Your computer is stolen, you alert Absolute Software and the next time the Computrace agent notifies the monitoring center it is flagged and will also configure the agent to go "hyper alert" and send hello packets frequently. Absolute then works with law enforcement agencies to help direct them based on source IP or caller ID where to recover your stolen laptop.
Law enforcement agencies are receptive to this assistance because people who steal laptops often steal other items so the cops recover alot of other stolen goods with the help of Absolute Software.
Special note, this software works even if the system isn't fully booted, if the computer is just left at the logon screen, it still works, if the computer is syskeyed and requires a startup password or bootdisk,,, IT STILL SENDS THE HELLO PACKETS.
All the systems can be managed from a web interface at lojackforlaptops website.
IF YOU SELL THE LAPTOP, YOU CAN TRANSFER THE LICENSE TO ANY OTHER COMPUTER AS OFTEN YOU'D LIKE.
Technical support is excellent, we reached support engineers by phone in Canada and they can work the fluent sys engi or end user.
If you have just one, or 10,000 laptops, this is a worthy investment, you can insure your laptop, but isn't your data priceless ?

5 comments about Webroot SpySweeper AntiSpyware - 3 User.
- After wondering why my computer was running turtle slow lately (and don't get me started on the frequent crashes), a friend told me to try this product. It costs about $29.99, so I decided what the heck I'll try it.
Well, I'm glad I did because I found out that my computer had 300 different types of spyware that was downloaded on my computer after an Ebay purchase from a dishonest seller.
After this spy sweeper was ran, the virusis, spyware and everything else was removed my computer was back to normal.
This is a great product!! I highly recommend it to everyone who has had computer problems.

- i got this Spy sweeper because i had Vertumonde and TrojDloadr-BCZ in my computer. Spy Sweeper ran the application, detected the harmful software AND REFUSED TO REMOVE IT! No matter how many times i sweeped with this latest version, It would not remove any of my trojans/viruses. I contacted their tech support with a ticket. they got back to me telling me to update the verison. I was uspset at that solution since i told them i am already running the latest version and i double checked on that and Spy Sweeper is still not working! I so far have not gotten any answer back and i suspect i never will.
Their firewall as well does nothing at all. I went on Paltalk into the Finance section chat room, and was immediately fludded with more viruses, cookies and spyware! So much for the firewall Spy Sweeper! I am now switching to ZoneAlarm. i tried the free version and the firewall seems to hold up really well.
in short i would give this software a zero in stars if i could!
- SpySweeper has kept my 5 home networked PCs free of Spyware for the last four years. Nonetheless, every year, I have tried a competitor when my subscription to Spysweeper has expired. Why do I try to replace perfectly effective spyware? Because it is PAINFULLY slow in pulling up websites, more than offsetting the small fortune I pay for fast DSL access. Why do I return to Spysweeper? Because the competitors are not yet effective in keeping the Spyware out to the same degree that Spysweeper does. As soon as I find a competitor that is as effective as Spysweeper and less piggish, I am gone. Until then, Spysweeper remains (alas) best in breed (although Trend for Vista is ALMOST giving it a good run).
Context: my machines are blazing, all with dual core, 4 GB of RAM, and hard wired with T2 access.
Hint: sometimes when I am really frustrated, I will disable Spysweeper for a few hours to cruise the internet and then reactivate Spysweeper to clean up the mess I have collected.
It is with great disappointment that I therefore recommend Spysweeper.
- I purchased SpySleeper to fix a recent infection in my computer. Although it detected and cleaned 2 trojans: trojan-fisher-bzub and trojan-downloader-zlob, SSleeper missed the trojan-spyware.webhancer. I had to use PC Doctor to detect and clean it.
Now I am having to work with Webroot online tech support to clean a final infection that it missed, and it has taken 7 days of trivial pursuit and poorly written quick fixes to get them to look at a scan and (hopefully) come up with a fix.
Phone tech support hold times are about 20 minutes as they are having to deal with significant Windows Vista compatibility problems with their product.
Although this product has had a good reputation, it is now asleep at the wheel in many ways. If you are trying to fix an infection you would be better off doing a Windows reinstall than spending time and money on SSleeper. Read the PC World recent review on antispyware to confirm what I have posted (poor infection removal, last place in overall ranking.)
2/25/08 update: It took 3 weeks to remove all spyware with ssleeper thru tech support. I have removed ssleeper from my active startup programs and use it only to run occasional scans after updating it. I do not plan to do anything with my computer during ssleeper scans because it slows to nearly lockup speed when a scan is running. Also, after definition updates, ssleeper automatically opens a new browser window that advertises the webroot antivirus product (kind of like what adware does!)
Pitty the poor people who do not read the more current reviews of this product before buying (amazon, your default should be to display most current reviews first.)
- It hijacked my browswer and took me to a promotional website when I tried to uninstall it -- if it behaves like scumware, it is scumware in my book.
As near as I can tell, it does nothing but make users believe that it is busy catching "problems" that other applications don't. THAT is why it is getting positive reviews -- people are being snookered into believing that it is "better spyware" when it appears to do nothing but create false reports on a clean system.
I had turned off my firewall and forgot to turn it back on -- and ended up with one of those search engine hijackers that keeps morphing to make removal difficult. I found advice on some spyware forums where people will guide you step-by-step through manual removal procedures. Being lazy, I was looking for a quicker fix and followed the advice of those who had no technical advice beyond "go here to download SpySweeper."
This annoying application continued to make bogus identifications after I had successfully fixed the problem manually -- it kept identifying non-specific "generic" maybe-potentially-couldbe intrusions. (It also didn't correctly identify the cause of the problem in the first place.) That alone is annoying, but even more annoying is that after making these "generic" identifications, it said that I would need to make a purchase to remove them. When I finally got disgusted enough to uninstall it, it opened my browser and took me to its website to prompt me to purchase it! It behaves exactly like the search engine hijacker that I had removed about two weeks ago!
Others say it sucks -- I have less polite things to say about it.
