5 comments about Microsoft Expression Web Upgrade from FrontPage [OLD VERSION].
  1. I bought this product thinking it would be a great upgrade to my Front Page. Boy was I wrong. It is nothing like Front Page and a lot of the short cuts that you learned do not work with this product. The instructions are very much like Front Page - non existent. If your happy using Front Page I would not upgrade to this program unless you like a lot of frustration!

  2. I had never created a website, but with a very rudimentary knowledge of HTML was able to make some slight modifications to an existing website with Notepad. I had looked at purchasing FrontPage, but reviews said that it did not work well with Vista, which I had. Therefore, if I was going to buy any program to create a website, price forced me to Expressions Web. After checking the Microsoft website for EW, I discovered that the "upgrade" version would install if there was any version of Microsoft Office on the computer. For the $99 price, I felt I could not go too far wrong.
The install went extremely easy as I do have Office 2007 on the computer. I read the complete EULA and think that it will actually allow me to install EW on multiple computers as long as only one copy is being used at any given time. (If you want to install it on multiple computers, which I did, be sure to read the EULA.)
Some of the reviews had said that the tutorial did not work. They were right. I discovered that the small tutorial had used the word "click" at one point and it should have been "right click". Once that discovery was made, I was able to complete the tutorial. The written documentation is very skimpy, but it does offer some help to a novice if you read it several times.
There is no wizard program to help you create a website as there is in FrontPage. There are, however about a dozen templates. I wanted to create a new website for my family genealogy association and I needed flexibility in having several links to multiple pages with different topics. I chose a "Business" template that I was able to modify to fit my needs. Without any knowledge of HTML, I would not have been able to make these modifications. I also used the help screens and never found one that had instructions that would work for me. I do not know if the help screens were not accurate, or if the problem was caused by something that I had incorrectly done before I went to the help screen. There were also lots of trial and error procedures, but after about 30 hours on the computer, I was finished.
I did not use EW to upload to the web server; instead I used a separate FTP program. I also had the luxury of uploading my beta versions to a subfolder on the website so that I and others could test it out.
I am giving Expressions Web 4 stars because it was economical to buy, easy to install, gave me no problems while running, and did allow me to create a good looking and very functional website. Now I am going to try and find a good instruction book for the program.

  3. A very thorough easy to follow reference manual for Expression Web. The use of hands on examples makes learning how to use this new web design software understandable and easy to design your website the way you want it. The CD of the book and software applications included make this an excellent value. .Special Edition Using Microsoft Expression Web

  4. I watched the quickstart video from microsoft expression http://www.microsoft.com/expression/kc/resources.aspx?type=quickstart and was able to figure basic html changes from front page in a day. After importing I found it better to copy and past text and functions/objects to remove errors into a new page rather then edditing them in the imported page. Imports include errors (highlighted in html)but does make it function without front page extensions. Even then I had to redo it a 4th time because if you copy text it comes with bad code unless you specify text only. The biggest improvement on my site was switching to layers from old style frames. The advantage is when you paste text or art into a layer it is fully drag positional vs a frame. Using Styles (text type and font and color prespecified at the begining) was easy as when ever you define a font it creates a new style and posts the info for you. This can cause a mess of extra code so watch and try to use as few styles as possible rather then creating more and more and then when you redifine the style it change all text using that style even in different locations keeping uniformity. I had to go back through as somehow I got around 25 styles (a fifth time). But now I have an error free compliant website.

  5. It is a great product, easy to use and fast to start working with it.

  1. I initially didn't like this program at first because I was having computer problems that came from Norton 360 which resulted in me haveing to reformat and reinstall all of my software. The first time that I installed CA I did run into some problems because I installed everything and I believe now that I didn't understand the program fully but when I tried to uninstall and try it again I did something wrong and had to reformat my computer so it would work again. I have the program installed now and it is working fine. I only installed the firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spam. The phising was really annoying so I probably don't know how to work that. The only complaint I have is that when I was having problems I could not get a hold of tech support. I would actually get disconnected after about 15 minutes of hold time which was really aggravating. I have only been using this for a couple a days and it does seem to work good. I only have a single computer and I don't have a network or anything but if you are looking for a program because you are having a problem with another one like Norton for example I would definitly reccommend this program.

  2. I've been using CA for two years now. I've seen it remove bugs that products like Norton and McAfee never knew existed on the PC. I've rarely seen anything that it could not remove, and generally when it could not, it was because Windows was beyond help.

  3. This is the best for your pc, especially if you are on high speed internet. Don't leave your pc without this program or you might as well kiss your pc goodbye. I have had this product for three years now and it is way better than any of the programs that come with your new pc to protect it. I will stick with this brand.

  4. The license for this software allows installation on three computers. I installed it on 2 XP computers and 1 Vista computer. The XP computers seemed to work fine for a few days, but after that they both really started to bog down, to the point that my 4 year old complained. Also there several were unexplained random crashes.

That was livable compared to what happened to my Vista computer. The install seemed to go well, there was one error message that did not seem serious. After that it went downhill fast. Immediately the computer slowed to a crawl. Programs that usually load nearly instantly were taking much longer. The internet connection on this compter is usually very good, also slowed to a crawl.

When I tried to uninstall the software it gave me numerous messages stating I did not have the user rights to uninstall, even though I was logged in as the administrator. Several registry keys were locked and I could not unlock them, so when I tried to reinstall the software it told me I could not because it could not reset the registry keys that it had locked. I ended up doing a system restore, which seemed to be OK at first, but again went downhill since the software performed only a partial uninstall.

I ended up reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Vista and everything else again.

As a bit of background, I have been taking care of about a dozen computers at my office for 13 years. I am no stranger to installing and unistalling software.

I would stay away from this software.

  1. After doing hours of research about which program I should use to create a website, I learned that DREAMWEAVER CS3 is the gold standard of professional web designers. Skeptical that someone like me -- with zero experience and little time -- could make it work, I downloaded a free 30-day trial version of the program from the Adobe website. [...].

Guess what? It worked! And in less than 15 minutes I had a website, albeit a very boring one. Still it was up and with the site wizard's instructions I was able to easily spiff it up in an hour and felt confident enough and excited enough about working with the program that I bought it from amazon (cheaper than the Adobe site!) and asked for over night delivery.

I am thrilled that I did. The program is incredibly easy to use. My site is now far from boring. Search engine optimized, neatly organized and professional in appearance, my site is exactly what I always wanted. I cannot believe I made it in only a few hours.

I recommend that those interested in this program start with the free trial version and the site wizard's easy instructions. If you like the results, buy the full version and the book "Dreamweaver CS3 The Missing Manual," also available on amazon. Though not necessary for seasoned professions and as thick as a phone book, the Missing Manual is a spectacular resource for a non-nerd like me who has BIG website dreams.

  2. I would NOT recommend this product. Adobe products always seem slow to me for one thing. Besides, having registered it three or more times, It caused my IMAC to crash two times in less than a week! I could not update the so called Hackers Security Issued on FLV videos on their site, so I let it alone. I noticed at the second crash (I could not catch Adobe file 'MM XMLXSL' from the first dying), checked all the LOG files and they all pointed to this 'MM XMLXSL' pathfile in Adobe Dreamweaver around the very hour of the same LOG time, presumably hackers or of some sort (I'm new to Apple), not giving me full access to the Leopard OS to start up 'Windows' like I know I'm supposed to, so I had to press the Eject button in order to get out of that loop, and then poof! Wouldn't you know it? My newly installed dual startup disk of windows is gone! (But the MAC OS was spared.) And I bet the hacker would like me to think I accidently crashed it Myself! (If that what hackers do???) I also noticed I had similar access problems at the first crash in less than two days of installing Adobe DreamWeaver CSS, It would not let me drag desktop items to the Applications Folder and it all ended up gone emptied in the Trash when I deleted it. However, I just got a new Update from Adobe, and probably not too long from now, this buggy Issue will be resolved in no time with their continuous loyal support, which I'm greatfull.

  3. very easy to use . no problems / no crashes / needed help setting up FTP - otherwise i barely needed any help. there's a lot of free help on the web because its such a popular program. yes its expensive (how much is the whole CS3 suite? are you a student? check out discount.

  1. The program is great once you learn to use it. It comes with no guides. The online instructions are a little hard to find and lacking in detail. All of the third party books ("For Dummies") don't come out for months. Does anyone else remember when programs used to come with a "How To" Guide????

  2. The online documentation provided is pitiful. Surely a company with the resources Microsoft has can do better than this?? The product works great, has some nice features, like the workflows, but the provided documentation is a joke, more geared towards selling you microsoft-isms (and that "you don't have to write a line of code!") than telling you how to use their product. And the online help is similarly sparse.

  3. I am supposed to use this product to update the web pages monthly for a non-profit organization. After exploring the menus and the manual, I still don't know how and where to start. I usually can figure out in a short time how to use new software however complicated, such as QuarkExpress, InDesign, PageMaker, FrameMaker, Illustrator, Dream Weaver, Front Page, etc., by exploring the menus and the samples with the help of its manual.

  1. This product works excellent with both windows and XP with the Spysweeper with anti-virus current version. Upgrading is a challenge and Webroot's customer support is mostly web based with poor phone support. Overall, when the product works its fantastic! Spysweeper is top notch and I use the anti-virus as a secondary backup to my main anti-virus programs.

  2. I've been trying to reach customer service for two weeks now. They get my email but then tell me to call support. I call support but the wait is so long I give up.

    :(

  3. I had 3 computers with viruses, Trojans and numerous malicious tracking cookies. It was so bad that I couldn't even install this program except in the safe mode. But once installed it started to remove the spy ware and pop ups and I was finally able to go through normal mode. Still, I had a few tenacious viruses. I tried to call the support number which is a little difficult to find, but they said they needed a report directly from my computer so they could create a CUSTOM sweep. Which made sense and was easy to do. I just attached a copy of the sweep to an email and sent it to them and within a day I had the updated program to run my computer through and VIOLA! no more viruses. I was so happy and on to the next computer.
Then my son called from college and was complaining about his laptop being incredibly slow and unable to go online, etc and I mailed him the program ( I bought the 3 user edition) and got him going as well.
The program does take up some room on my computer but less than mcafee or Norton, which I had tried before and was not at all happy.
I had Mcafee on the original computer with all the problems to begin with!
So for the money and the time it was definitely worth it. I now have it run a full sweep daily while I sleep and in the morning I see all the critters its caught, (lately nothing but cookies) and I love it. So for all its worth that was my 5 cents.

  4. Spy Sweeper has been a very dependable, and easy to use, product. Prior to my weekly 4am 'sweep', I do clear my history, temporary files, and cookies, and I perform a Disk Cleanup to eliminate unnecessary files. This 'streamlines' the amount of bytes that Spy Sweeper must sweep. Consequently, there's far less 'junk' being quarantined.

I appreciate the automatic updates, which are fairly frequent and take very little time.

When I bought my computer, Spy Sweeper was highly recommended by Best Buy's Geek Squad, which carries the product for 'house calls'. I have just purchased my third year's Spy Sweeper. I'm a very satisfied customer.

  5. With the spy sweeper with antivirus you also for a added bonus get the firewall number one its very hard to use you have to go to computer network school to be able to use it. I dont know about anyone else i have a wrtp54g wireless router and a comcast telephony cable modem voip modem there both voip vonage and comcast voip i connect to the internet fine without the webroot firewall but when i install it i have nothin but problems. it says limited or no connectitiy i get a 169 a normal ip is that your connected to the router is a 192 ip address. what you have to do to resolve this issue is click start run type cmd type ipconfig /release enter then ipconfig /renew wait a few seconds then go to a website you should be online. watch restart your computer then its messed up again. you have to go through that all over again to be able to go online now you can uninsall the firewall and just use the spy sweeper and antivirus with the windows firewall but who wants to do that. you want your moneys worth webroot says they just throw that in its not any extra for the firewall. there technical support is horrible too your on hold for 2 to 3 hours at a time i dont really think they have enough reps to handle all the calls they get. the antivirus and spyware i do admit is the best software around on the market by far but the firewall they do need to do more work on. I know a couple of friends that bought spy sweeper with antivirus like i did and they had the same problems 3 different people and im not the only one. so if you have the nightmare im going through what im going through dont go through the same hassel again make the right judgement and go with something different something thats more well done. Talk to the geeksquad there located at a bestbuy store location they will be able to help you make your decisions. hope i could be of help.

3 comments about Adobe Flash CS3 Professional.
  1. I am new to Flash and I think this version is very user-friendly. Keep in mind that I am not doing any heavy animations - just simple projects.

  2. Flash CS3 has a wonderful interface including newly integrated tabs for windows like Scene, Color, Align, etc. It's more user-friendly than before and you can choose to do more things with your published flash than before as well. A very good tool for the web animator.

  3. I can't find a reason why anyone would upgrade to Flash CS3 from CS2.

It's the same interface, apparently most of the same features, and not significant enough to upgrade. I'm actually let down that Adobe seems to care so little about this product, given the widespread use of Flash video on the web today.

One of my biggest pet peeves that I had hoped would be fixed in this version but wasn't, was the inability to trim videos by punching in times rather than using the slow and inaccurate scrubber. What a terrible, terrible way to trim video.
