5 comments about McAfee AntiSpyWare 2005.
- I purchased this product having used the McAfee Firewall and Virus software. PC Magazine was correct, McAfee AntiSpyware does not catch many of the latest viruses and the current list is not as large as other products. I bought the first version of this online in March of last year and the 2005 update later. McAfee cut off my online updates in March of this year even though I had installed a later version in October!! I uninstalled this and went for WebRoot Spysweeper. On first scan there were 84 ad cookies! When updating current software or downloading new items, WebRoot steps in immediately to ask about the scripts running. Don't waste your time with McAfee!
- I own full versions of at least 6 different ANTI-SPY programs.
Mcafee seems to be middle-of-the-road.
software maintenance is a pain.
today, I tried to update ONLY my mcafee antispyware.
It requires a mcafee website login.
Cumbersome, but okay. I'll do it.
[Perhaps someday Mcafee will grasp the concept of "AUTOMATED UPDATES", but until then].
Next, the wretched "security panel" wants an update too.
Despite the same mcafee website login name and password,
I can't take care of BOTH updates during one login.
I had to:
open browser>go to Mcafee website>login>get antispyware update then install it.
Then I had to do everything ALL OVER AGAIN for the mcafee
"security panel" update
Too Painful .
SIDENOTE about program:
It appears that Mcafee wants to control your whole desktop environment via their Security Panel.
Nevermind what "Joe Q Public" wants on THEIR pc.
I'll bet that as of 2005, every mcafee "suite" AND
every mcafee single-product [INDIVIDUAL program/product] installs that WRETCHED,
"Mcafee Security Center".
Every consumer end-user should CHARGE/INVOICE mcafee for mcafee's installation of any extra program[s] onto their pc.
A Charge-per-meg of my hard drive space seems fair :^)
All I have is the mcafee antispyware.
I DO NOT WANT THEIR blankity-blank
"mcafee security control panel".
I use:
1. Zone alarm 5 as my firewall and it operates and updates itself without INTRUDING into other areas of my pc.
2. Norton systemworks 2005 premier provides the anti-virus and system utilities. It too simply loads the norton items I bought and uses it's own control panel to maintain the norton utilities installed. Updates itself easily.
When my mcafee subscription expires, I'm dropping mcafee anti-spy.
Just my opinion.
Just my .02 cents.
PS. I work in the IT work full time. Have been for almost 15 years now.
Since the era of the IBM XT computer.
So I am NOT a new-bie to the arena of hardware or software.
With so many other competitors out there, unless mcafee builds a better product [especially how they UPDATE the products]
this will be my final mcafee product owned and used.
- Till recently, McAfee was only focussing on Anti Virus software. With the recent surge in attacks on home machines through malicious emails, popup ads and self downloading adware and spyware, the web surfers are in a fix. And whenever we face serious security issues, companies like McAfee and Norton find another market to sell their products to!
I bought McAfee to try it out on my home desktop and in this review I will try my best to give you a balanced opinion while trying to save you the money that you could use on yourself.
SOFTWARE TESTED...............PRICE............OVERALL PERFORMANCE =================================================================
Webroot SpySweeper............FREE............Poor
Ad Aware............................FREE............Fair
Spybot...............................FREE............Good
Microsoft Antispyware...........FREE............THE BEST
Zero Spyware.......................(...).............Excellent
McAfee Antispyware..............(...)............Excellent
The above chart shows the softwares that I have tested against adware and spyware on my system.
McAfee AntiSpyware (MAS) is good as it really cleaned my machine and I do not see any more popups or suspicious programs running in my task manager. However, the freeware from Spybot gave me the same results too!
Further, Microsoft's newly released AntiSpyware (Beta version) cleaned even the most persistent spywares that even McAfee could not.
So the real question is: is MAS really worth the price when freewares give you almost same results?
My take is NO. Microsoft has finally come out with a usable, effective and free AntiSpyeare that can beat any malicious spyware.
If you don't like Microsoft or don't trust it, Spybot has much better support on the net (forums etc) and gives you a great interface and cleaning power at no cost. If you find it useful, you can continue to use it. If you don't, you can always come back and buy ZSW.
In short, Spybot (...) and MS Antispyware (...) both are much better at kicking harmful and dangerous softwares out of your windows machine. You don't really need to buy anything else.
- As another reviewer has mentioned this product seems to just add to your problems, during the setup it does say that it will get rid of unwanted pop ups and adds. Once I installed the program I found out that it could not remove some cookies that were found in the ad-ware and I had some error messages something about copy write prottection which I thought was complete crap, so not only does this thing not remove properly but it doesn't even detect the latest vireses or adds. Not only that because I later found out that my computer crashed again when it was working fine before I installed this pathetic program, I suggest you get the latest version of Norton anti-spyware 2005 or PC-cillin instead.
- This has made spyware even MORE of a problem on my computer. total bummer, man!

- The more you learn about it and get deep inside it, the more funcionality you will find, and the uses are only limited by your creativity.
more than a simple database, it has scripting capabilities that allow u to expand
If you are into larga data/file management this could be very helpful.
- I've been using FileMker Pro since version 3.0. It is an outstanding database program which is easy to use. Anyone who invests a little bit of time can create a personal database that is easy to use, will help organize your thoughts and make your life easier.
I highly recommend this product!

- This is a great product - but I think it retails for $2,000 not $20,000
- The price is correct. It's not $2000. Note, it's a processor license, not a server license.
- The cost of the processor license MSRP is $20,000.00 and it not only covers the processor, but also the computer the processor is in. You need one for each processor in the computer, and instead of using server license's, processor license's give you unlimited User and Device CAL's I have a Quad Xeon with 4 processor license's and I can connect an unlimmited number of user's or devices http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx
It's the way to go !

5 comments about Dreamweaver 3.0.
- Good old Macromedia, they've done it again! Created a brilliant program that does just about anything you could wish...and with the wealth of add-ons available (many are free!), it's just about perfect..BUT...make something on a mac that looks great, and be aware that when viewed on a PC it could very well look terrible ....text moved, way too large, spaces added, images with text over, etc etc...I say buy it and wait for this to be solved, it's still too good to miss.
- Macromedia's Dreamweaver is the absolute best WYSIWIG web design program available. As with any program, however, you have to know what you're doing in the HTML edit mode... Until all browsers and platforms interpret code the same, we web designers will need to custom-tweak the HTML. (Problems with pages not being truly WYSIWYG when viewed are the result of design/coding errors or platform incompatibilities. Previewing work in multiple browsers/platforms allows you to fix any bugs before anyone ever sees them.)
- I went to a camp and usd it. the minute i started i fell in love it is so easy to use. Iam only 11 and it ia breeze.I made a website and it looks awsome.Thank you macromedia, you did it again.
- Dreamweaver is the most horrid, repulsive web design software ever written for the Mac. I am warning you, fellow Mac users. Macromedia must have bought a can of ladybugs and dropped them in the beta tester's brains-I can't believe that they missed some very important bugs-the site map doesn't work, and there is no cross-platform compatibility. Do not buy this. Please look into GoLive by Adobe.
- I started my web page (...) using an online page builder. A good way to start, but not very creative. I then moved up to Adobe PageMill which gave me even more opportunity to design the look I wanted. When I decided on Dreamweaver, it was out of a desire to make my page look even better, and work across platforms. It does the trick.
The program is extremely user friendly and easy to learn. Always a good thing when you're dealing with a limited schedule. The FTP interface even makes sure your support files go with the html page. All in all, a must have for the web head in you.

5 comments about Norton SystemWorks 2005 [AntiVirus, Utilities, GoBack, Check IT].
- I've had home computers since the Timex Sinclair in 1982. The only time I've been forced to reformat my hard drive was a couple years ago after install problems with System Works 2002. I bought 2005 from buy.com because it was $64 with $64 rebates for upgrading. Free but not worth it.
I installed 2005 over 2005 that came installed on a new desktop. The pre-installed version had a virus update subscription that was to expire 12/5/05. After installing from the CD and registering I could not update my virus definitions as my "subscription" had expired instead of being extended 12 months as it should have been.
Now after a few attempts at uninstalling and re-installing, using the advice and programs from Symantec's web site the program is installed but won't run. At times it has seemed to keep unrelated programs from running.
If you do try to install this software be sure to have the backups and recovery points ready.
- I purchased Systemworks 2005 with some hesitation after reading the reviews. However, I have Systemworks 2003 Professional on my Dell 8200 desktop and 2004 on my Dell 4600 desktop, both work great with never a problem. I bought 2005 for my Inspiron 8600 laptop. Installation was quite easy with no problems. I was not running a previous version of Norton. It certainly is a system hog but that is to be expected for what you are getting. I have been using it now for about a week and no problems at all.
- I purchased this product, having using earlier versions and been completely satisfied. I presntly use Norton Systemworks 2003 and have discarded their 2005 version. Their programs are no longer integrated and each program, in multiple parts, needs to contact Symantec (parent org) with statistical info or what ever it is that your computer is revealing to them? I downloaded a trial version of 2006 Systemworks, think it's nothing more than 2005 with a few more added bugs? Norton Systemworks 2003 was the Symantec's last actual attempt at upgrading their product, save your money and invest in, much cheaper too, I may add, that version.
- Don't buy software you pay good money for only to have it disabled! If I had known this was going to be disabled prematurely, I would have never had bought it.
After getting an error message that the subscription was invalid, I call support and was told the software subscription was up despite the fact that I still 4+ months left on the subscription renewal.
All I asked for for was the entire year subscription I purchased 11/7/2005 and am able to use the product (System Works 2004) until that time. I think that's reasonable, legitimate and legal as there was no agreement that I would have purchased another product to have the registration time applied to the product.
While the software I bought was SystemWorks, I don't think the draconian software policy would differ across products.
Now the product is disabled and EVERY service is disabled as well. That means, no virus scan, no disk doctor--nothing.
- It's too bad a review of 0 stars is not possible. 1 star, even a half star, is too good a rating for this product. Steer clear of Symantec. I repeat, steer clear of Symantec. As long as people continue to use their garbage products, they will continue to produce garbage for their beta testers, oops sorry, I mean customers. I'd been a Norton user since '98, but I have officially thrown in the towel after too many problems with SystemWorks 2005. To many bugs, install and system resource issues, and headaches in general. Customer support and technical support is non-existent, unless you pay out the ying yang for it. They can be talked into waving the support fee one time only. No matter though. When you call the technical support line or customer support line, you will likely get an agent with a bad attitude, is not knowledgeable of the product, and is barely fluent in English. A bad combination. So, on balance, it's a waste of time. Online support is a joke. The support website search functions are mediocre at best. GOOD LUCK EVEN FINDING A RELEVANT SOLUTION. Email support? Don't attempt it unless you enjoy having your intelligence insulted. I do miss WinDoctor, but oh well, life goes on. I currently use BitDefender Antivirus. I'm still looking for a good set of disk and file utilities to replace the SystemWorks suite. Currently, I am looking at a lengthy session of cleanup for what I will call a dead installation. Really dead. I can't run the apps or repair the installation from the CD. Error pertaining to not having access permissions. Ditto launching the program from the start menu. Symantec related Windows XP services will not start. Can't repair installation from add/remove programs--indicates program has been removed, would I like to remove the listing from add/remove programs. All files and folders present on the hard drive. All this after much ado getting this installation to work in the first place. So, I will have to manually remove Symantec files from the hard drive and manually remove all registry entries, hoping that I have no further serious problems caused by all this hacking. I will have a restore point and the registry backed up. Adios, Au revoir, Auf Wiedersehen, Ciao, Sayonara, Hasta la vista Symantec.
