1 comments about Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional (Mac).
- Acrobat 7 Professional on the Mac offers very little over Acrobat 7 Standard. The windows version includes a whole extra program (livecycle designer) for creating forms and using xml data. The Mac version does not include that program.
However, Professional does offer a couple of very important features:
1) The first is building indexes of documents. Indexing is similar to a search but is much more powerful. An index is a pre-built catalog of all the words in your document, saved as a separate file. After the index is built, whenever you want to search a document, you search the index instead, and searches are almost instantaneous. Searching a regular pdf without an index is quite slow. The real power of the index comes when you index multiple pdf's at once. You could have 100 reports, or a dozen books, or whatever, pre-indexed, and any future search is very very fast. Indexing is definitely a slick feature and an impressive trick if you create content for end users or clients.
2) The other important feature is mostly for the advertising/design/print community. Acrobat Pro allows a lot of interaction with press-ready files. You can view separations, preflight documents, and chop large pages into smaller pieces and print any portion of a page you like. If you work with documents for a living, the Professional version is almost a must-have.
Finally....speed. Version 7 is still slow to load. But on a Mac you can leave your computer on for weeks at a time and just leave Acrobat running, so that's not too big of a deal. You can speed up load times by de-activating plug-ins that you don't use. If you just use Acrobat to just view documents, you don't need a lot of the plug-ins. If you use Acrobat professionally, I'd leave the plug-ins active. Do a Get Info on the Acrobat program, click open the Plug-ins tab, and you can uncheck plug-ins to deactivate. For a full description of each plug-in, look under the help menu while in Acrobat.
CONCLUSION: Great program. Good upgrade from 6. Pro version offers useful power features. Mac users a little shortchanged on forms creation.

2 comments about Net Nanny Ad-Free.
- I installed this on my children's computer, which was being plagued by pop-up ads. As far as we can tell, it hasn't blocked a single ad. In fact, we got several pop-up ads immediately after we installed Ad Free! I trusted this product because of Net Nanny's reputation, but it just didn't work.
- I am very disappointed in this software. When I install it on my computer, it corrupts my Explorer files. In order to access the Internet, I have to uninstall Ad-Free and reinstall Explorer. Therefore, this software is worthless! I can not get a hold of the company for help. I have sent emails through the website and get no response. Their phone number is an endless cycle of voice mail commands. Since the software is opened, I can't return it for a refund. ...

5 comments about ZoneAlarm AntiVirus.
- So far, so good. The software installed easily, but I wish it would have wiped out traces of the Norton A-V software. Even with uninstall, there are traces that of Norton that ZoneAlarm flags as potentially dangerous. Slowly we are tracking them down or quarantining them.
There's a feature that allows the user to set security levels for each program used on the PC. Nice. But for us non-experts, it's daunting to try to determine what settings to use. I had a few glitches with ZOneAlarm's default settings (too conservative?)
- One can not separate the antivirus from the firewall. If you would like to continue to use the firewall, but not the antivirus you must delete the whole thing. The antivirus is not that good, it missed a virus that (free) Trend remote scanner caught.
- and Amazon's version was a great price, but out-of-date. Thankfully, the company upgraded me to the current version without additional cost. I am very happy with their antivirus product...easy updates, easy to scan. A small reminder: when installing the product, one must type in the license key to activate everything. In my case, a 'vertical bar' was cryptic...was it a number "1"? a small "L" or a capital "I"??? Took me several tries and some e-mail with the company to figure it out. That was my biggest/only complaint.
- I've had Zone Alarm for about 6 months and will not renew. Is it effective in preventing viruses? Maybe. I avoid as much as I can exposure to potential sources but can say I seem not to have had any inhabit my computer. In this regard it may be doing its job.
What I dislike is a feature that drove me away from Norton, the popup message that it was scanning my email, I felt Norton was simply using that opportunity to promote themselves and now Zone Alarm does the same - slowly. It should run in the background but instead takes center stage and prevents me from accessing any other programs until it is done. If I have a large number of messages in my in-box it will scan them each time I open Outlook, even if they have been scanned before.
The thing that troubles me most, however, is that I may not do a complete system reboot for 2 or 3 days. When I do, Zone Alarm claims it's anti-virus is out of date and needs to be updated. Why isn't this happening in the background real time? Am I 2-3 days out of date and at potential risk for infection because Zone Alram is not routinely checking for updates?
- I have used this program for a couple of years and it is really annoying. First, I hate its updates, its locking my machine when it decides to do an update, stops Acrobat from running, stops the whole the machine if I step away and here is the worst.. it checks itself and stops its own scanning program from launching. Norton finally looking good again!

5 comments about Macromedia Dreamweaver 8 Win/Mac [OLD VERSION].
- I'm an amateur at website design/building, so understand that I'm not very "deep" in Dreamweaver's abilities. However, I got the program to switch from Adobe GoLive CS2 which had many quirks, bugs, and frustrations. (One example - while you upload your changed files to the web server in GoLive, you can't do anything else in the program. Single tasking!?!?!) After just 30 minutes or so of working with Dreamweaver to update my site, I'm already sure I've made the right decision! I have a long way to go in learning what it can do, but my first impressions of the product are excellent.
- Face it. If you want the best Web design software, get Dreamweaver. Sure there are other products that will do the job, but you will not find one that does so much, is so easy to use, and has so much support available in terms of books and Web forums. When I say it is easy to use, I am talking about knowing how to use it and then using it correctly, of course. You can do a little or a lot, depending how much effort you want to put into learning it. For Web design, this program is tops. Now that Adobe owns it, it will continue to get better.
- For an amateur in web design, Dreamweaver 8 helped me along without having to learn all the numerous coding that goes into creating a webpage. I would have liked if the program had basic templates available to use, at least for the layout of the page. Perhaps it does and I just haven't been able to figure it out. It is hard to create fancy designs if you aren't a web design professional, so the page I've been working on thus far is pretty basic and not very flashy. Other than that, the software is very easy to learn and I enjoy using it.
- If you are familar with the Macromedia line of products then this one is not a surprise -- it's a good ide. This version comes with support with most of the web programming languages out there -- including xsl stylesheets. The application loads quickly with rare crashes, has standard and secure ftp support, database connectivity tools, and common web elements. Using it just for code editing is also great.
I would suggest buying a suite that includes this one versus purchasing it
solely.
- I upgraded from a much earlier version. This one runs just fine on my new iMac with Leopard. It is easy to use and powerful. I am getting ready to upgrade again to the CS3 version soon.
