  1. It's obvious that Adobe feels safe and entrenched as THE maker of PDF creation software, because Acrobat installs like a herd of elephants moving in to your computer. It completely re-worked my MS Word toolbars and would not allow me to restore them the way I want them. (Even after un-installation, there is still something at work against my normal.dot template.) Other applications felt the impact, too. All I want is a way to make PDF files, not a new lifestyle.

Unfortunately, Acrobat 6 could not deliver the PDF files for me. On a P4, 1.8 Ghz system, I allowed it to process my Word document for 5 hours before I gave up and had to get some real work done. I went and found activePDF Composer, which handled the same Word file and delivered my PDF file in just 10 minutes.

    Get over yourself, Adobe.

  2. I've been a fan (and user) of Acrobat for many years, and am continually amazed by the number of organizations that *don't* circulate their documents in PDF format. I don't even *read* Word attachments anymore, for fear of viruses and because I *know* they won't look like the author intended.

However, earlier versions have each added great new features, and the differences of v6 over v5 just don't seem substantial enough to warrant the price or effort of upgrading. For most users, I'd recommend saving dough by finding a copy of version 5, a vast improvement over versions 1 thru 4, and of course a conceptual and practical leap (or three) beyond sharing documents in native formats such as Word.

  3. At my business we are required to scan things to PDF documents to send to our clients. I love the PDF format. It is a great way to easily condense documents into small file sizes while still maintaining quality. It's unfortunate that I haven't found a way to create PDF without going through Adobe first. As the IT guy in our office, Acrobat problems is the biggest thing I get called about. This is the most bloated invasive software I have ever used, even more so than some spyware I've seen. It installs itself EVERYWHERE.

I have an Acrobat icon in Microsoft Word, which seems convenient for converting documents from Word to PDF, but it places the toolbar below all the other toolbars, when it only contains three buttons, taking up valuable screen space. It took me hours to find a way to remove it because it kept coming back when I would try to disable it manually. Acrobat will install toolbars everywhere that are difficult to remove, it will add "convenient" convert to pdf options on all your right click boxes, it will reside itself in your system memory and keep itself always on, it will add itself to your quick tray icons, and then it will come to your house, eat your food, and hit on your wife.

Acrobat created problems on our computers that could only be resolved by reinstalling Acrobat. That is fine I guess, however uninstalling Acrobat does not completely remove it. I used their uninstall program, and still found over 100 instances of Acrobat left in my system registry. Acrobat still had a program left in my memory that was causing problems after I uninstalled it. This program installed over 300 keys in my system registry! Lastly, this program constantly has trouble detecting our scanners. We use Acrobat to scan on over 15 computers and we constantly have to unplug our scanners and have plug and plug reinstall them so Acrobat can find them.

I love PDF documents, and their "Print to PDF" feature is very useful for converting things to PDF, but as a whole, the Acrobat software is the worst software I've ever used from a large company, and I eagerly await the day when another company makes an easier to use PDF program that can be used for scanning.

  4. I am not a business user... been wanting this program for years, but couldn't justify the expense. Finally saw the price on E-bay drop drastically, so I took the plunge. Program loaded in a snap. To date, I have used .Outlook, Web, and Word as source to create about 300 PDF documents. All has gone seamlessly. Never having had previous versions, I do not notice any lag or other problems others have noted. All in all, I am highly impressed. Now, to read that used book I got on the program to see what other neat things I can do.

Any comments on whether it is advisable to upgrade to current version (and why) would be greatly appreciated.

    All the best,

    Jay

  5. I purchased this software in 2003 and have used it for five years without any problems. I only had Acrobat Reader before and since I've had Adobe Acrobat Professional I've used it constantly. I wouldn't be without it.

  1. Takes forever to set up. About an hour to read a story so it gets use to your voice. Your suppose to be able to save the voice recognition. I had to do a complete system restore and it would not let me put the saved recognition back, so I had to read the story again.Terrible voice recognition, very frustrating to use.

  2. I can't understand why everyone doesn't use it. It didn't make my keyboard obsolete but it was a close call!

The delivery was quick and clean. The product comes with a headset which is the same price in my local store without the voice recognition system.

Once I read an interesting story into the computer so it could get used to my voice, the recognition was extremely good. I will never type 90 words a minute. I don't need to now. I have been speaking that fast all my life and now my computer listens and puts my words on the screen.

  3. I am a little disappointed in the product. When I reboot my computer then the program will not reload. In order to use it I have to reinstall the program and then I can use it. In other words it will not work if I shut down the computer for the night.

  4. I prefer Via Voice to Naturally Speaking. It is easy to use, has features to scan docs that I did in the past, and dictate words that are new. I find it works well and is easy to dictate to. It writes to both word and its own program, which can then be pasted into a doc. Tech support was also great! I have 3 copies I like it so much.

  5. I just purchased viavoice. I read what other users mentioned about usability. It is like any new program. It involves a learning curve. I had my program running on XP. I disabled security during installation and re- enabled after installation.. You just have to tweak it for your system. I called tech support and they told me I should have brought Dragon. I decided to stay with viavoice and after voice test the software recognizes your voice. It is a good program.

  1. The software is great and almost a neccessaty in todays design world. I still would beware of the Express shipping as they use UPS. I would give the sofware 4 stars and shippin 1 star but can't edit my rating, only the review.

  2. I am enjoying using this product overall... but I am having some major issues with using Adobe Acrobat 8. It keeps telling me to re-install the program to be able to use the features (like importing a word document to create a new form). I downloaded updates, etc.. and nothing seems to work. (I use Windows XP). It's extremely frustrating since Acrobat was one of the reasons I chose to buy the "Creative Suite" rather than just the individual programs I needed.

  3. I've been using Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash & Dreamweaver for over 5 years now.

These applications have always excelled at what they do, and this package is no exception. It's also stable, and after 4 weeks I've had no crashing issues (be sure your computer meets or even tops the minimum system requirements).

The major "upgrade" I was expecting in this CS3 package was cross-application compatibility. To an extent that has been accomplished (the "relationship" between Dreamweaver & Photoshop is now very user-friendly and time-saving for example). But I was still expecting a little more integration between the others and would be unsure to upgrade from CS2 had it not been for Action script 3 and the range of applications (like many have said, it's a HUGE INVESTMENT for any freelancer \ small company).

I still miss ImageReady, though, and Adobe Bridge is something I'd rather live without.

That said, this is an essential product for anyone designing & developing websites or other creative content for the web (or print).

  4. All I can say is this program will require I reformat my hard drive in order to install it on my computer of choice. Adobe CS3 is very unreliable and finicky. I was able to install it on my old computer running XP but not my new one, which also runs XP. So, the failure to run does not reflect my ability to install it or my computer's operating system. There seems to be conflicts with other Adobe products. I would recommend purchasing the $9.00 trial version DVD from Adobe to see if it will work on your machine. If not, you have lost only $9.00. Adobe should have done a much better job to insure installability. If you're stuck with it, try googling "Adobe CS3 install problems." There are some convoluted workarounds suggested there. Since I had another computer, I opted to go that route.

  5. This is pretty nice - everything is basically the same as before for the things I use it for (Photoshop). I like how Illustrator can convert raster images to vector images. I like being able to zoom in using DreamWeaver and its better support for newer html coding using divs and styles etc. I wouldn't use anything but Photoshop/Dreamweaver to make websites, so I give this a high score.

5 comments about Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0 [OLD VERSION].
  1. After reading reviews at amazon.com,[...] I decided to switch to Kaspersky Internet Security from ZoneAlarm ISS (which was not performing well recently, update failure, etc). Awesome deal from Amazon, it was free after MIR! Installation was not that bad, after a full scan, it detected and deleted some fatal trojans and stabilized my system. My IE used to shut down for some unknown reason (probably because of those nasty worms) for some very popular sites including Sony, Blockbuster, Apple, Cnet, etc, now they all open in IE. Good job here.
Now, the bad news! This IS is not good for non-technical people at all. I am not a software expert, but have handled and completely understood many softwares (the way it works), not this one. Configuring this software is very confusing. It does not know the difference between the good and the bad! Even for very popular programs/websites, it gives me warning until I add them to trusted zone. For instance, it detects YahooMessenger program as invader. I could tell you more examples, but it could be non-ending. I normally visit one website (anandabazar.com) for the newspaper in my mother tongue (Bengali), but Kaspersky does not allow it to display its fonts and detects it as malicious object (adware). Even if I ask Kaspersky to allow the process, the fonts cannot be displayed either. Only after shutting down the IS, fonts can be displayed. After doing this, when I turn Kaspersky back on, it asks me to delete TDServer Control installed by the website. I don't find any problem with the above-mentioned website, but Kaspersky does not understand it.
Bottomline: Kaspersky may be regarded as good IS, but not the best. Its limitations cover up its advantages. I have also used the following softwares:
    Mcafee anti-virus, Symantec anti-virus.
And I must say all are good, but none of them gave me peace of mind.
I am now planning to switch to Spysweeper anti-virus/antispyware security suite after reading pcmag review. Not to mention, I have used Spysweeper anti-spyware before and stopped using it as it failed to "sweep" (unable to connect). Hope that they have fixed the bugs in the new version.

  2. This is typical Kaspersky. It does it's job, more thoroughly than the others. We've used them all, since we're in the business but prefer this.

  3. Having switched from Norton Internet Security because it was slowing down my system and was especially bothersome for this reason in addition to the cumbersome functioning of auto-upgrades and regular scans, I see that Kaspersky presents great improvements in these areas.

In addition, it is much more transparent and interactive. In brief, while no security system may be perfect, this, from an end user standpoint, beats Norton and MacAffee hands down because it is smoother, faster, less cumbersome and more transparent. From this standpoint, it's a better made product and a breath of fresh air.

  4. Kapersky was a much needed replacement for my computer security.

I switched from Norton to Kapersky Internet Security when my Norton Internet Security program began malfunctioning like the HAL 9000 computer. I ended up having a professional computer whiz uninstall the Norton program. At the time I was told that the challenges I experienced with the Norton program were not uncommon. What were the challenges? I'm glad you asked.

Norton Internet Security began blocking access to any "https" sites. As such you could access sites, such as banking and on-line catalogue ordering, but you could not log-on. The security icon would show that my computer was at risk, but when I clicked to get more information I was greeted with a warning that I was not an administrator. The system would likewise not allow me to disable the firewall or uninstall the program as I was not an administrator.

Since I replaced the security program with Kapersky I have had no problems with my system.

  5. This product is totally invisible while it's working. I haven't noticed any degradation in preformance on my computer like I did with Norton.

My only issue with it is that it is a 3-user license. I installed it on 3 computers, thinking that the 1-year license clock starts independently for each machine. Wrong. Even though I installed it on the third machine a full 3 months after I installed it on the first, the expiration date was the same. All three licenses expire one year after it is installed on the first machine (even though I will only get 9 months of use from it on the thirs machine).
