2 comments about Adobe FrameMaker 6.0.
- Yes, it's more expensive than Word 98 or AppleWorks, two fine word processors that may provide all you need. Nevertheless, FrameMaker (called "Frame" by many users) is my tool of choice for working on book projects, from non-fiction to novels.
Why? Partly because Frame is fast, stable, and just a pleasure to work with. But that alone wouldn't justify the price. Frame's real power for writers comes from its Book feature, which uses a Book Window to display the chapters of a book. Chapters are worked on separately and saved as individual files, but Frame manages and presents them in the Book Window as part of a single book. You can add, delete, and edit chapters as you go without a problem, and Frame takes care of autonumbering your pages so that the page numbers in one chapter pick up where the last chapter left off. The Book Window also displays the total page count, a very helpful feature for writers who try to work by a daily quota, or just like to see constant progress being made (don't we all!). Until you see the Book feature in action, it's hard to understand how useful it is, but if you've ever worked with a large document as a single file in Word, you'll appreciate Frame's ability to handle smaller, manageable sections of text that are all maintained as part of the same book. As for fear that Frame is too hard to learn -- don't worry! The Book Window feature, and all basic word processing in Frame, is very easy, really no more difficult than any other word processor. The main difference is that instead of Styles, Frame uses Paragraph and Character "tags" that are stored in catalogues that you can access and modify at any time. Honestly, Frame's implentation of many formatting features, such as tags, master pages, and the ability to import all the formatting from one document into another, was much easier for me to learn than Word ever was. It all works and functions quite logically, if not intuitively, and you'll quickly get the hang of how Frame gets the job done. Once you catch on, you may find, as I did, that Frame is really much simpler, smarter, and more efficient than many other word processors. Here's my advice. Buy a copy of FrameMaker 5.5.6 for Dummies -- it's available here on Amazon, and it's a great value. It's very well-written and organized, and includes much of what you need to know in the first 100 pages. Start there, then read the later chapter on working with Books, and you'll be ready to roll. Even better, demo versions are included on the CD-ROM (although the Mac version requires a demo serial # that you'll have to get from Adobe), so you can practice what you learn and decide if this product is right for you. Although version 6 adds some new and helpful features, it works almost exactly the same as v.5.5.6, so your time learning that earlier version is time very well spent. Again, this is a professional writing and layout tool that anyone who has ever used any word processor can master very quickly. If you write novels or non-fiction books, give this a try! Once I started using it, I couldn't go back to a regular word processor for full-length book projects.
- The user interface hasn't changed much since Adobe bought FrameMaker from Frame Technology about 6 years ago. Aside from being integrated with Acrobat, Frame has not been brought into the Adobe fold with the other Adobe products.
This complaint aside, FrameMaker is still the best tool available for what it does best, long structured documents. Anyone that's tried to write a long technical manual in Microsoft Word will appreciate FrameMaker's ability to divide the document into logical chapters and tie them all together with its book function. FrameMaker supports cross-references, integrated drawing commands and the ability to generate a number of lists and tables (tables of contents, tables of figures, alphabetical index, etc.) An integrated equation editor is also available for typesetting equations. FrameMaker is not for the faint at heart; it requires a disciplined approach to your documents and planning before writing, but for the types of manuals that it was designed for, its still the best tool available at an affordable price. A variant product, FrameMaker+SGML provides SGML support for about half the cost of competing products.

5 comments about Panda Platinum 2006 Internet Security [Old Version].
- This program mostly prevented me from connecting to the internet, so I guess you could say it is the ultimate internet security package. I ended up unintstalling it and sending it back to the seller for a refund because:
1) When I booted my computer (a Pentium 4, 2 GHz, 256 ram, Windows XP), Panda loaded itself before Windows was finished loading and hung up Windows on the "Welcome" page with a largish Panda-in-your-face icon.
2) When I clicked on the panda icon to determine what was going on, nothing happened.
3) My computer would remain this way for at least 45 minutes, at which point I would get totally frustrated and turn off the computer.
4) But,the only way I could turn off my computer was to unplug it; the power button wouldn't work. Panda has taken control!
5) It only took 4 or 5 times of going through this scenario before Windows would finally load.
6) I had this problem constantly for over 2 weeks, despite trying every feasible configuration of the program.
7) I contacted Panda Software about it via the email address they suggested on their website. I never received a reply.
8) Once I uninstalled Panda, everything worked just fine.
9) Taking into consideration the lack of customer service and poor performance of the product, I think they should have named their company "Abominable Beast."
- This product is HORRID! I loaded it, and my internet connection was shut off by it, and none of the 'trditional' way of getting it started worked. I called Panda, Microsoft (who couldnt help, as it was 3rd party software that caused my problems), Panda again, and nothing from anyone. Horrible customer service, Horrible product.
Buyer Beware!!
You are hereby warned!
DO NOT BUY THIS AWFUL PROGRAM!!!
Norton is the way to go...FOR SURE!!!
- I am trying to install the evaluation version of the product (both Titanium and Platinum) and neither one will install. They keep saying that McAfee A/V is already installed, but that computer has never *had* McAfee installed on it.
I went into the web site's suport... their "troubleshooter" provides zero help. Their "knowledgebase" returns no results for the search terms "compatibility", "mcafee", "zonealarm", "incompatibility", "incompatible", and "incompatible program detected"... apparently they don't think there are any such issues.
I called their information line and (surprisingly) got through to tech support. They emailed me a replacement "avdetect.ini" file that would fix the problem... it didn't.
If I could install it, it might do a fine job. But the company clearly needs to work on its install routine.
- I have had both 2005 and 2006 versions of Panda and have never had a problem. I am on the web alot and send lots of emails and have never had any viruses or spyware on my computer.
Panda is slow to load. It takes my computer about one additional minute to boot up before I can use it; but hey, for the protection it gives me it is worth the wait.
I have had to contact customer service once about a download for the 06 version. I was able to find the download myself, which is good because they never got back to me.
- I wish I could give this product a higher rating--it seems to be an effective antivirus product, and certainly works better against spyware than Norton or Mcafee.
BUT....Panda has essentially non-existent tech support, and you'll be wishing you had some support when the program keeps telling you it can't update because your username/password are wrong (even though they aren't). Or when you keep having to chase around their incredibly circuitous website trying to find an answer to seemingly simple questions.
Overall, Panda 2006 is just too much hassle to set up and use, and while it seems to work OK once set up, one still is left with a nagging sense of doubt about whether it is really operating correctly full-time or not.
Not exactly the comforting feeling one wants from a security package.

2 comments about McAfee Internet Security Suite 6.
- After installing this peace of software It quickly forgets its own password. Which is not a problem You just need to uninstall it which of course you need the password for. The number the tech manual gives you is a recording that directs you back to McAfee's web site which of course you need the password to access the internet. I had one lady over the phone offer to e-mail me my solution which of course you need your password to get your e-mail. I spent (I kidd you not TWO AND HALF HOURS! [count them TWO AND HALF HOURS!] on the phone with EIGHT different phone numbers!) Which are not toll free six of those numbers where recordings directing you back to the web site or other numbers you already have. I had one lady who was more then kind to direct me to any one of those numbers I already had and had called. The other was willing to send the e-mail Please Please avoid this nightmare
Do Not Buy Do Not Purchase Do Not Use And Definitely Do Not Install To Any computer!
- McAfee bundled all the necessary software you need for secure Internet surfing in just one CD, saving you a lot of time in installation. The software itself is very stable (never encountered any hang-up in memory), and doesn't hog your PC's resources. It loads quickly on startup which is the fastest that I've seen so far. The updater has also been integrated efficiently that it doesn't cause any disruptions in your activities. Once you got it installed, it's the sweetest low-maintenance software you'll ever have. It's a total far cry from the Norton Suite that I had not long ago.
My Norton Suite of a year constantly hanged up, consumed a lot of my PC resources that made my PC slow, and broke down a lot of times whenever a virus get through my system (and it said my PC was protected at all times with the Auto-Protect feature!). And just because of that I needed to re-install the program all over again (which takes by itself a lot of time and sweat) and continually screwed my system with every re-installation. And their customer support takes 2 weeks per reply for free service, and charges you with a fee (in american dollars) if you want immediate service. My PC and myself is now scarred by the ruthless nightmares this suite has given me. So as a review, I could say that McAfee is the best I had after Norton. This suite itself contains both necessary firewall and antivirus protection your PC needs, and includes much more features like privacy service (which is like a net nanny software) and anti-spam. Just by switching to McAfee Internet Suite has saved me time and money (since I don't have to buy individual softwares that this bundle has). If you're skeptical like I was in the beginning, I recommend that you try the trial software which is offered in their website for 30 days. And I assure you that after you had trial, you'll go for the whole year subscription. That's how good this software bundle is. I've just read the previous comment of this software about the password thing and I just don't get what the reviewer was saying, because I haven't experience it myself. So out of five stars, i might even give it a six!
