  1. AS with the Desktop (70-176) book in this series the full syllabus in not covered - where are Resource Managers? Shared property manager etc.

Also misleading - as with desktop book.

You will learn something - but not all you need!

  2. This book has too many obvious errors. Yes, it will help you but why pay for a book that has poor publishing and proofreading. If the publisher/author would like to contact me ... please post a comment here.

  3. Do not purchase this book. I have completed seven chapters and have come across two clear errors in the review questions. Readers attempting to prepare for the Visual Basic 6.0 Distributed Applications exam must have accurate information in the text AND accurate answers to the review questions.

  4. This book explains VB 6 in simple language so that even the idiot can understand VB 6 features. However, the content is simple as well and can't help you to pass the exam.

Try the exam guide by Howard Hawhee. I'm not sure whether it is the best, but it is second to none so far.

  5. This book will not help to pass the exam. The questions are not even similar to the exam's questions. Some things in the book are over explained, that you could think that the reader never have seen VB before, and other more complicated topics are just touched.
I would not recommend this book, not only because of waisted money, but because of waisted time.

  1. There are dozens of teach yourself VB6 books around; but I found them either far too long (700+ pages) or too basic. This book provides the essentials in a concise and efficient way.

The book can lack clarity at times and could do with teaching recommended techniques such as object naming conventions, etc.

Overall, I would recommend this book to people who want to learn VB6 and be productive fast.

  1. Ignoring the editing errors, I learned a great deal. I was really nervous with picking a programming language book, and the VBA book made learning programming easy. I hope that they can get past the major typo's in the next edition.

  2. I want to personally apologize for the errors in the text. My publisher (Kendall-Hunt) rushed the text while placing a higher priority on quantity of sales rather than the quality of the product. I will have a second edition available March 2004.

    God Bless!

    Jamie

  3. I have failed the last programming class I took ot the local college. So I took it upon myself to learn the VB programming concepts using the book by Bates. I finally understand!!!!! There are a lot of spelling errors in the book, but the content is what is important. I feel I can go take that class now and pass with flying colors. If only other textbooks made this topic as easy to understand.

  1. This is mainly a reference guide, but is structured differently to Microsoft's "official" guide, being very much built around the VBA for Excel "object model". Additionally, each chapter starts with an overview of the objects it documents, including their uses, and gives hints on how to succesfully use VBA.

Appendices cover the constants used in VBA function calls, and their actual values, and also include information on accessing DLL's from VBA - for example to call the Windows API directly from VBA.

This, and the Microoft "Excel 5 VBA Reference" make a very handy reference set for VBA programmers
