  1. I am surprised no one reviewed it yet ! I got that book cheap in Scotland (wee bit out of date now) but the book is very good cos easy to follow and the author takes the time to explain. But for the most important problems like concurrency and transaction he went too fast, he explained too long easy notions but not enough the complex ones too bad, the book would have 5 stars otherwise.

That book helps you to leanr basics of ADO.NET but it is not a professianal book!

    IRNBRU

  2. This book does not have everything for everybody, ( but no book ever does anyhow ).

But what subjects and topics this book has, - the nuances of how to use them, caveats to watch out for, limitations of applications, - I feel is worth the price of the book.

I have previously learned a lot from the author from his former books (early VB 5 !!). He has a great writing / teaching style. That is certainly carried on to this work.

His explanations on the core concepts of ado.net data binding, record concurrency and navigation, transactions with data adapters, how DataAdapter.Update works, different techniques in finding and deleting DataRows, are just a few of what I consider golden nuggets of information. ( I have not even finished his section on web-based apps / xml. )

I have several other books on ado.net on my reference library, but I find myself reaching for this book repeatedly for study when I find myself in a bind in my development work.

Again, you perhaps might find yourself needing additional books to reference., but this book by Peter Wright is a gem in my library. (The pages are already battered I'm buying a new copy.)

As the other reviewer, I'm surprised there are not much earlier reviews on this book.

I feel I owe Peter Wright this review because I've learned a lot from him. I guess I have to apologize for not taking the time to submit this review earlier.

Keep up the good work, Wright.

3 comments about Tracing and Logging with .Net.
  1. My boss wanted me to write a trace listener that would post spy messages to MSMQ. Well after days of online research and banging my head against the desk I stumbled apon this gem. It pointed out the errors in the MSDN documentation as well as gave me a more elegant design idea for our trace model.

  2. This is a good e-book for the price. It makes up for the lack of clear documentation in the framework. Also the idea of using filters in Trace is kind of neat and clear code is presented for this.

  3. I bougth this book but after a year I want to read it again and amazon system is asking me to buy it again.
This makes no sens because when you buy a book you have it forever.

5 comments about .NET Enterprise Development in VB.NET: From Design to Deployment.
  1. I found the language in this book very difficult to follow. The WEO code is good, but following the examples in the book is a challenge. It is obviuos the book was put together quickly and that it is aimed at expert developers, who probably don't need a book like this. The downloadable code does not track the book examples very well. Only the final example in each 2 to 3 chapter group is included, the intermediate examples aimed at getting you familiar with the material are not included and expletives on buttons in the download code is so unprofessional.

  2. I wish that someone would rewrite this book because the idea that the authors had was great.
The book was hard to follow; I found myself going back numerous times to recheck things. The enterprise objects framework was very advanced and well coded in a lot of areas, but I don't like the way that it handled retrieving data from a data base. So as I learned some good things from this book it was harder to learn than it should have been. One thing that I love about this book is that they give you the source for their object builder tool. I don't use the tool. I have my own but it's nice to see them giving theirs away.

  3. I was forced to buy this book as a textbook for a .NET course and lemme just say it was awful. I am relatively certain that the author is dyslexic. You have to read 3 pages then go back 2 then read anther 3 and go back 2 in order to follow this book at all. During the course of a day i threw this book across my room at least 5 times. In the end I literally took a baseball bat and smashed the hell out of this book, launching it across the room until it was in pieces. Anyone who buys this book can look forward to the same wish. Maybe you'll be able to restrain yourself from doing it.

  4. There are a zillion books about .NET. I was hoping this one would cover deployment as the title promises. DON'T BE FOOLED!
Where is the information about Strong Naming, about how to get things into the GAC, about the line item tools like sn.exe, gacutil.exe, resgen.exe, al.exe (come on!)
What about the classes in AssemblyInfo.vb ??

No wonder only two of the authors put their faces on it. POOR

  5. I was looking for a good book on enterprise development in preparation for my first "big" enterprise project, so I got this book in the hope that I would learn something worthwhile.
Having already been involved in the development of stand-alone applications over the years, I was comfortable with the basics.
My, was I disappointed! The authors obviously knew what they were doing, but how to make themselves understood by mere mortals like myself was their greatest problem. It did not
take me long to begin to wonder why I could easily follow Fransesco Balena's advanced writings, and I could not follow these authors'. Tried as I may I could not get past the
first two chapters or so, before I looked for some other things to do.
This is the second book by Matt Reynold's that I have bought (the other was Beginning E-commerce with VB, MTS and ASP), and I have been unhappy with both books. I don't think I
will be going near his books anytime in the future.
If you really want to learn something about enterprise development, I suggest you scour Microsoft's MSDN website, or look for a more responsible book. This website has tons of lists you could also check out. This one is a waste of precious time.

  1. This book takes you through the "basic" building blocks needed to write programs in VB 4 or 5. There are many illustrations which show you how to add combo boxes, message boxes, timers and how to use the menu editor. This book is very good for a beginner, but if you have had experience with VB, you may be dissapointed with the depth that this book covers.

1 comments about Problem Solving with Fortran 90: For Scientists and Engineers (Undergraduate Texts in Computer Science).
  1. Brooks gives you an introduction to the idea of using a computer to solve numerical problems. No previous experience with computing is assumed. He starts from scratch by explaining enough about the structure of a computer so that you can appreciate what is required in coding. He chose Fortran 90 as the language of instruction. There is no user interface. Which certainly does simplify the text. He focuses on the intrinsics of taking a problem, finding a [possible] solution, and coding that solution.

Quite aside from no user interface, Fortran is a procedural language. So the book goes into how to decompose a solution in this context. You should be aware that this can lead to scaling problems if your solution code gets large. Which is why object oriented approaches are preferred. But for the problems used in the text, and for those you are likely to encounter, this should not be an issue.

2 comments about Visual Basic for Behavioral Psychologists.
  1. Very useful if you're a psychologist who is scared of Visual Basic and those giant manuals on the software. This clearly teaches you the basics you need for programming psychological experiments and then some. This book is for the ".Net" version of Visual Basic. There are some differences if you only have the VB 6.0 version. You can get the book much quicker if you just order it directly from the publisher at contextpress dot com. Amazon took 3 months to deliver this to someone I know.

  2. Visual Basics for Behavioral Psychologists is an essential guide to those seeking to streamline their data collection process or create innovative experiments. This step-by-step guide successfully leads you through the sometimes grueling process of generating computer code and programs. This manual will not only allow you to develop the standards programs described in the text, but it will give you skills to generate novel material to suite your individual needs.
