  1. Table of Contents is:
    1. Enhancements to Visual Studio 2005
    2. Visual Basic 2005 Language Enhancements
    3. Enhancements to Windows Forms Applications
    4. Enhancements to Web Forms Applications
    5. Introduction to Mobile Applications Development
    6. Enhancements to ADO.NET
    Appendix A: ClickOnce Application Deployment

The author covers the new things in VB.Net 2005 in a 190 page book. If you are familiar with VB.Net 2003, this book is a good way of coming up to speed on the new features. I found it to be well written and easy to understand, with useful examples to illustrate the new features. It is not an in-depth treatment, nor a "How to Program" book. The low price makes it attractive for people already familiar with VB.Net 2003 who want a useful guide but don't want to spend twice that amount. This book could be used as a supplement for educators who are using a VB.Net 2003 textbook for which the 2005 edition is not yet available.

  1. I like this book because this book provides in-depth introductions to VB.NET language and to Windows Forms. This book introduces object-oriented concepts early and includes a case study on object-oriented programming. This book is appropriate for programmers who do not already have a strong background in object-oriented programming. This book is perfect for programmers who have basic knowledge in languages such as Visual Basic and COBOL programmers. But previous knowledge of Visual Basic is not indispensable. This book is not only for the beginners but also aims for experienced programmers by providing a concrete, concise and in-depth introduction to VB.NET with a lot of example programs.

The book presents the concept of object-oriented programming and talk about the important elements of object-oriented analysis and includes a case study. this book clearly defines in-depth, example-rich and provides a hands on introduction to the VB.NET using .NET. Using real-world examples and a detailed case study, this book helps you to master in VB.NET from the ground up or rapidly migrate to VB.NET from earlier versions of Visual Basic. I have recommended this book to others.

  3. After browsing and comparing a dozen of VB.NET books in bookstore, I decided to order this book on Amazon.com. After read a half of the book, I like it very much for its step-by-step manner, clear explanation of important concepts, good organization of materials, and good code examples/case studies. In addition, this book has a "sister book" on C# written by the same author (Introduction to C# Using .NET). There are so many similarities between those 2 books. When you finish one or two chapters on one book you can easily learn the similar stuff in the other book.

  4. this book wastes over 10 chapters producing command line applications, useful for teaching the basic concepts may be but this is VISUAL basic not "commandline-basic", it does explain the basic concepts though

  5. This book is just what it says, and introduction. I found it useful for my purpose, to get a broad and deep enough "working understanding" of VB.NET.

It is a broad introduction, covering lots of advanced topics such as exceptions, hash tables, threading, .NET framework, etc. There are code examples for everything the author talks about and downloadable source code. This is a good book as long as it's used for it's intended purpose.

It is not a tutorial, in fact unless you are familiar with object oriented programming, threading, etc. much of this book may be too daunting. However, if you know Java or C++ you'll be able to devour this book. You know, at times I felt as if I was reading a Java book - the similarities in VB.NET are so striking.

Once so devoured however you will not find this book a satisfying reference for "big league" coding. You'll need to know much more about Visual Studio.NET and .NET framework for your serious applicaion development. Also I expect there tons of tiny tidbits about the language that a good reference would have. The index is disappointing - 8 pages for over 650 pages of text - but this is the rule, not the exception in these things. There are also no appendicies summarizing the language.

5 comments about Visual Basic 4 in 12 Easy Lessons.
  1. This is a very good Book for beginers, In my case all I have learned about VB is in this Book. Very easy explenations, easy to understand and good examples. The bad thing about this book is that it has many errors and also it does not explain too much about Data Programing, but as it says it is a book for beginers.

  2. If you wan't a decent book on learning VB then The Beginner's guide to VB by Peter Wright should be your choice. This book is not at all organized and is very superficial.

  3. As the novice programmer to VB or any other langueges, I found this book to bring me up and running in programming in no time. It introduced me to a lot of "easy" concepts of programming with clear and through explanations and examples. I don't remember of having any trouble with the source code andsmall examples, so SHAME ON YOU, who told that there were alot of mistakes.

I recomend this book as the beggining to VB, now for expertese.

  4. This book would be better if it had a sequal book for more advanced vb programs (as in a set). I liked it - but would have liked it better if it would have had more example programs. The book does cover the different elements in Visual Basic programming but would have been better if it was more in depth in certain areas. The book is well written and easy to follow along. Greg Perry is both a good teacher and programmer but I would like for him to share more of his talent.

Good things about this book: Simple approach / easy to follow. Gives hands on examples.

Things I didn't like about this book: Should have provided more hands on examples. Should have been more in depth (further explanations).

  5. This book came with a VB starter kit I purchased a couple of years ago. When I read it originally I was impressed more by the writing style than by the content. It does introduce VB Programming and that's all the book claims to do. Mr. Perry, I think you are an excellent writer, please put more content in your books.

4 comments about Real World Enterprise Reports Using VB6 and VB .NET.
  1. Clear, practical and concise coverage of almost every reporting topic and technique. Chock full of examples and side bars, beginning to advanced users will find something worthwhile in its pages. Coverage of popular reporting tools such as Crystal Reports and Active Reports prove informative, but more informative, interesting and cost effective yet was the discussion on using the ubiquitous Microsoft Office as a reporting tool from VB6 and VB.NET. I found the authors' advice on creating general purpose criteria screens for reporting, invaluable in several of my consulting projects. If you want to weigh your reporting options, become a better report smith, build a reusable reporting library and impress your clients, buy this book!

  2. A clear concise guide to the ever changing landscape of reporting tools and their myriad uses. The discussion of different data source types and example code for each case was very useful to me - from Office to VB6 to .NET, it's all here!

  3. Most of the technical books on the market are organized to address a specific technical issue.
This book allows you to search based on business requirements. This is a very unique approach
and helpful for developers. Additionally, there are many effective working examples.
It also discusses different reporting tools such as VS-View, Crystal Reports, Active Reports, and OLAP.
I would strongly recommend this to any company which uses more than one reporting package.
It is a valuable reference tool. It will certainly be helpful in making technical/reporting decisions.

  4. Ganz has put together a fairly good book that provides an overview of several different reporting options for VB/VB.NET developers. His coverage of different 3rd-party solutions such as Crystal Reports and ActiveReports is one of the highlights of the text. I was unhappy with the focus on tabular reports, with basically no coverage of more graphical presentation options like charts and graphs. These are often more challenging to develop, and expert advice from a source like this would be quite valuable. The book also seemed to have too much of a focus on building specific reports for specific business requirements, and not enough on building more generalized solutions to cover a wider range of reporting problems for end users.

4 comments about Professional Visual Basic Project Management.
  1. A book that I have been waiting to be written for years. Jake's book of 550 pages gives an professional and clear guide to planning and implementing VB projects.

His section on UML to VB mapping, is excellent, with the example code snippets backing up his explanation. Helps educate your management that VB development should be taken seriously and more important, what actually needs to be done!

  3. This book covers every detail of a Visual Basic project. It is not just a book for project managers, it is for every member of the team. If you are in involved in any VB project that uses more that a few developers, you must read this book, now!

  4. Whether you are a project manager or programmer working on VB projects this book is very helpful. It is written in terms that are understood by both project managers and programmers. Flows well with overviews on UML, MS Project98 and Visual SourceSafe. Bought it for the whole team.

1 comments about Problem Solving with Fortran 90: For Scientists and Engineers (Undergraduate Texts in Computer Science).
  1. Brooks gives you an introduction to the idea of using a computer to solve numerical problems. No previous experience with computing is assumed. He starts from scratch by explaining enough about the structure of a computer so that you can appreciate what is required in coding. He chose Fortran 90 as the language of instruction. There is no user interface. Which certainly does simplify the text. He focuses on the intrinsics of taking a problem, finding a [possible] solution, and coding that solution.

Quite aside from no user interface, Fortran is a procedural language. So the book goes into how to decompose a solution in this context. You should be aware that this can lead to scaling problems if your solution code gets large. Which is why object oriented approaches are preferred. But for the problems used in the text, and for those you are likely to encounter, this should not be an issue.
