5 comments about MCSD VB6 Distributed Exam Cram (Exam: 70-175).
- I read this book before I took the 70-175 exam and I passed it. This book is time-saving material to review the skill requried in the exam. I passed the 70-176 also, and read the 70-176 cram book. I can say 70-175 cram book is much better than the 70-176 cram book!
- This is an excellent test book for MS 70-175. I just passed the exam in my first try with the help from this book. I found at least 5 test questions the same in the book, and around 15 very similar to the review questions in the book. And you will find the book covers almost everything in the exam. Any way, it is far better than other books I have in hand.
- I wasn't as impressed with this book as the 70-176 Exam Cram, but it still helped. It covered every catagory and laid out the foundation of study very well for the exam. The book's questions and sample exam weren't as tough and devious as the 70-176 Exam Cram's were, but the actual MS Exam was actually much easier with hardly any tricky questions. I scored a 914 on the 70-175 exam and an 814 with the 70-176 exam.
Overall the book was very good, not excellent. The book is a must have if you are taking the exam, but you also need other materials. I suggest at least Trancender exams.
- I used MCSD In A Nutshell to pass exam 70-176. It also covers the 70-175 exam, but the exam cram was priceless in putting the final pieces together for the 70-175 exam. I used these two books and the Transcender exams. I passed both exams with flying colors!
- This is a good supplemental book that will help you pass the exam. I combined this book, James D. Foxall's "MCSD in a Nutshell", and the Transcender courses to pass the 70-175 exam. I would never recommend just 1 or 2 books to learn a programming language or study for the certification exams. The more you read, the better you'll understand.
The chapters on internet development, Active Server Pages, and IIS were of little help. I did not have any questions on my exam dealing with these subjects so I felt that reading this chapter was a waste of my time. If it had not been for this chapter I would have given the book 5 stars. There are some minor mistakes and/or typos in this book but overall it is a very good resource. You should read this book starting about 1 week before you take the exam. Good Luck with your exams.

1 comments about Visual Basic 5 Made Easy.
- I took a class at a local community college and we used this book. After the first month, the instructors arranged for us to return them for a different book. First of all, our CD were corrupted. Second, It never really goes into depth of any concepts that one should have to move on to the next level. For the amount it costs, your better off with another book. It's made easy cause it doesn't cover much!

4 comments about Everything You Want And Need To Know About Web Development : Web Development With Visual Basic 5 (CD-Rom Included).
- This is an excellent tutorial and reference for the development of web applications using Visual Basic. The author must be commended on both the thoroughness and depth of the content covered, and for using an array of examples, which clarify difficult or complex topics. The companion CD is a great reference tool in that it has a majority of the source code used in the book, and also explains several topics in more detail- such as FTP sites and POP3 servers. The combination of both the book and CD will allow even a novice or beginner web developer to create professional looking and functional web sites and applications.
- An Excellent book for web development if you are using the Microsoft tools : VB5, Interdev, IIS, Transaction server etc. It covers the whole spectrum, Active X conrols and documents, active Server Pages, VBScript, ISAPI extentions, transaction server. Great book. Lots of sample code.
- Actually I've been reading this book for 2 weeks, and I'm really surprised with its contents. A concise, well-oriented book, it teaches you every aspect of web development, using Microsoft technology ( IIS, VBScript, ActiveX, WINCGI and so on ) Warning: you will enjoy this book only if you have intermediate to advanced skills in VB5, and it also needs familiarity with Internet. By far, one of the most complete books about web development. Next time I tell you about the CDROM, cause I have not seen it yet.
- This book has been written and edited by functional illiterates who have trouble with tense, number, etc. Many of the references to figures, etc. are incorrect. Several of the C language examples are incorrect. On the other hand it has information I've not been able to find anywhere else.

1 comments about Visual Basic 5.0: Environment, Programming & Applications.
- Several years ago, I was teaching Visual Basic for a college, as a corporate trainer and in community education. Therefore, I was always in need of quality material for textbooks and so I examined this book.
I found it lacking in many ways and unsuitable for use in any of those environments. The community education students tend to be people with limited background and they need a lot of visual cues as to what to do. Unlike many of the other books I examined, the illustrations in this book are generally only partial and are black-and-white. This limits their effectiveness in the Visual Basic environment, which is largely driven by appearances on the screen. Compared to other books, there is also a lack of source code in the text. Even though the code can be accessed elsewhere, in my opinion the code should be given in the text so that it can be referenced to the diagrams. This also makes it possible for the instructor to reference the proper location in the code.
The coverage is what would ordinarily be covered in a first course in Visual Basic and a few exercises are included at the ends of the chapters. However, this is not enough to earn my recommendations, there were many better books on VB 5 available.

5 comments about Peter Norton's Guide to Visual Basic 6.
- This book was nothing more than a collection of ambiguous, unorganized "general information" about Visual Basic 6. This book seemed to "wander and meander" from a starting point to an ending point with no discernable focus or objective. It did little more than gloss over most of the important Visual Basic 6 components and concepts; some key topics were hardly discussed at all. It seemed to me that most of the "usable" information contained in this book came directly from the the VB6 Help files. I am tremendously disappointed with this book.
- This is the worst book that I've read about VB6, I'm very impressioned with books from MS Press and The ADO 2.0 Programmers Reference from Wrox. Don't waste your money with this book. It's not presents the new features (ADO and DataReport,...) from VB6.
- Books actually written by Peter Norton are better than the average computer book, since Norton seems to understand the English language. Unfortunately this book clearly wasn't written by Peter Norton. To top it off, the editing is execrable throughout. Sams should be ashamed, and Peter had better watch it when he puts his name and his picture on a book. This one seriously tarnishes his image.
- My first mistake was to purchase this book at Barnes and Noble.....for $5.00 more...without the benefit of Amazon's Reader Reviews. It was mid-way through chapter 2 when I begain to seriously question.... WHO WROTE THIS THING! The editing errors I ran into previously bothered me, but not to the point of giving up on the book. But the disjointed presentation of the material really got to me in chapters 2, 3, and 4. This book is a classic example of a cut and paste assemblage of not very well written bits of information on VB6. Then I did what I should have done before I bought the book...read the acknowledgements. According to my calculations, Peter Norton did not write any of this book. Michael Groh, who assumes that responsibility, actually wrote only 13 of the 28 chapters (46%) (including 1,3 and 4). I was primarily upset because I purchased the book largely based on Peter Norton's reputation for writing good software AND good books. Regardless of Norton's lack of input, the book should still rise to some base level of instruction. Well, it does do that, but in doing so it also lowers the base.
- I have to agree with the other not so exceptional reviews of this book. It was informative to me - only because I knew nothing about VB. Once you read the first couple of chapters you get pretty much all you need to understand the VB UI. But then he goes on and on about it covering every control and its function and never really gets into the stuff that interested me. Like umm, CODE EXAMPLES.
To its credit, this book does cover all of the areas that you should know about when developing in VB i.e. COM and DCOM but he doesn't go in depth enough to allow the reader to understand what they are. This book needs to take the O'Reilly cookbook approach to teaching. It is a good introduction but it only skims the bare surface of what an aspiring programmer would need to get going. To reiterate, a good intro but if you want to go swimming, try another book and a new swimsuit.

5 comments about McSd Fast Track: Visual Basic 6, Exam 70-175 (Fast Track).
- The book should only be used as an additional review material for the exam. It certainly does not compare to "Exam Cram: VB6 Distributed", but it has some good chapters that are applicable for the exam. Some areas were not covered in enough detail nor they have been explained clearly (i.e MTS security).
- This book is exactly what it claims to be. A quick guide to what you need to know for the 175 exam. It won't tell you how to program, it assumes you know that already (hence for EXPERIENCED candidates) and it certainly won't give you questions from the exam (there are in fact, no questions in this book from the exam) but it does give you a basis of what you NEED to know and what you need to understand to pass this exam.
I give it a heartly thumbs up as it did exactly what it claimed to do, it helped an experienced candidate pass.
- Most of this book is the same as the MCSD Fast Track VB 6 book for the other exam (70-176). There is some useful information, but most of it is a cursory look.
These two books should have been put together into one book and made better. If you buy both, you've been had.
- Well, this book is really oriented on the topics of the 70-175 exam but it just go quickly over the themes without going to deep in the matter. It could be good for a fast review if all the topics but YOU REALLY NEED ADITIONAL SOURCES. You can not miss the official training course from Microsoft. If you have passed the 70-176, then with the course materials and this book you would do Ok.
- On both of the exams for Visual Basic 6.0, there are numerous questions about Visual SourceSafe and the Package and Deployment Wizard. You will need to have a through understanding of these in order to pass the exam. This book gives the basics but does not go in to great detail on these subjects. I would recommend James D. Foxall's "MCSD in a Nutshell" and the Transcender courses if you are really serious about your certification. Visual Basic 6.0 is still the main development environment at many companies. You want the best training and education you can get. This book is about average. This book is OK if you use it as a supplemental book to the other study guides.
