5 comments about Active Visual Basic 5.0 (Microsoft Programming Series).
  1. This book is a must for people that want TONS of code examples, learn how to build ASP pages, and more..But the biggest feature, you will learn how to make your own ACTIVEX Controls! I would recommend this book, for anyone who wants to have the apps support the intellimouse (Source with code included) and other neat stuff. The code projects are WONDERFUL. Also comes with Visual Basic Control Creation Edition! Also comes with a whole bunch of other neat programs that allow you to make ActiveX stuff, like ActiveX SDK, and lots of other stuff...But I would get this book if you have the money! Its a good reference, and a fun book to read through. Have Fun!

  2. The Eddon boys clearly define the essence of VB development. You can literally pick this book up and read it from cover to cover or reference specific topics for review. The Eddons' provide a clear discussion of Microsoft's ActiveX approach as it relates to VB and VB related Web development (ASP, VBScript, and IIS). This book is not bogged down in endless code examples that have little significance to development efforts. It is a verbose descriptive book emphasizing theory and comprehension, sprinkled with precise examples that are easily understood and duplicated. Hands down this is the best book I have found on VB ActiveX and the Web.

  3. This is an excellent presentation of using Visual Basic for ActiveX Components and Controls.

  4. There were some mistakes in the exercises of this book, nevertheless, they were pretty straight forward and simple to understand. I enjoyed reading the book for its simple methods in teaching the advance features of VB such as COM and ActiveX, and I also like the many examples and exercises in the book to keep the readers follow along and to get their hands dirty with coding. It is easy to read and at the same time, very informative.

  5. Despite some errors in the exercises of the books, the materials covered were presented in a easy to learn and and no nonesense fashion. The book also covered Winsock and Internet controls, tips on using ASP server objects for which I find very useful to read on.

2 comments about Professional ADO.NET with VB.NET.
  1. This book is typical Wrox: it offers a comprehensive coverage of the subject in a very easy to follow fashion. It starts with several chapters covering the core ADO.NET classes - DataReaders, DataAdapters, DataSets. As the ADO.NET DataSet is a class with very rich features, this book discusses each facet of it - from the ADO Recordset-like generic disconnected in-memory data presentation with constraints, relationships to strongly typed DataSet, and finally to the built-in support of XML. The later chapters then introduces advanced features such as web services, SQL Server XML support, Performance, Security, etc.

A minor inconsistency is that some examples in the book use Console Application interface, while most others use Windows Application, perhaps reflecting the fact of this being a multi-author book. But as far as learning ADO.NET is concerned, this is really not a issue.

Oh, if you already owns its predecessor - Professional ADO.NET, which is written with C#, you might want to keep it and skip this one because it's mostly the same contents in different language (VB.NET). But if you haven't got either, it's definitely worth a very close look at this title.

  2. This is one book that combined it well! "Professional ADO.NET with VB.NET" is the text to grab, if you are a .NET programmer who wants to learn more about .NET data access technology.
The book has a consistent practical approach to issues. It is full of grounded information, which would ensure that programmers execute their tasks with unflinching confidence.
This book has a result-oriented outlook. Its authoritative analyses of cross-platform programming issues are flawless. All the important classes, (DataSets, DataAdapters, e.t.c.), which constitute ADO.NET received generous attention. However, all these expanded ADO.NET tutorials came at the expense of VB.NET, whose underlying parameters received little attention. Still, this is a valuable book to have.

4 comments about Vbscript Unleashed.
  1. The book only actually has a few chapters on VBScript, of which most are simple reference guides to the language. There is not enough detail on how to actually use the language. My problems with the book: Only a fraction of the language is covered, and what is mentioned has many errors. The chapter on the scripting object model incorrectly describes how to work with frames. I try to write code using the examples and get nothing but errors. The sample scripts provided work but have bad programming style. The book proceeds to explain ActiveX in great detail, but I bought the book for VBSCript, and was very disappointed that there was only a couple chapters of use to me.

  2. This book has so many errors and inaccurate statements that it would definitely place a newcomer to VBScript (which it was obviously written for and by) on the WRONG track. I purchased this book as an aide to prepare for a class I was teaching, and I wasted my money. Do not buy this book!

  3. I wanted a good primer and reference guide to VBScript - this book was both. There are a few typos here and there, but I think it's a great book and have gotten a lot of use out of it. This was the second book I have bought from the "Unleashed" series and I just bought a third!

  4. With all the other reviews I was apprehensive in buying the book. I bought the book anyway, just like any other computer programming references you would get ideas and techniques here that other books do not offer. A definite must have if you want to improve your skill in SCRIPTING!
