4 comments about Microsoft SQL Server 2005 New Features.
  1. This book came out when SQL Server 2005 was still in Beta. Even though the product has already shipped, I would still recommend this book to anyone wanting a broad overview of the product suite. It covers what's new in the development and administration tools, T-SQL enhancements, and overviews of Notification Services, SQL Server Service Broker, XML Integration, Reporting Services, Integration Services, and Analysis Services. Even though it's a high-level perspective there are enough code snippets and technical details to keep it interesting. The author is Senior Technical Editor of SQL Server Magazine, and the book is excellently written.

  2. This is a very well-written book. Perfect for learning new features of sql 2005. Clear and thorough presentation. Excellent job on Chapter 4(Programability features). Also thin-ness and portability, it won't break your wrist :)

  3. While I acknowledge that I am writing this review long after the initial release of this book, I expected more from it when I made the purchase.

I've just started chapter 4, Programmability Features. The code is out of date and many of the features discussed have been changed in Visual Studio 2005.

The book is still useful for a brief introduction of new features. If you want to implement any of the features be sure to get a book that is based on the actual released versions of SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005.

  4. I don't think you should read this book if you wanting an overview of the new features in SQL Server 2005. Much of the content is out of date because the product changed while the book was being printed.

If you interested in a book with accurate feature explanations, I'd try SQL Server 2005 Distilled. It's very accurate and not full of filler content- like entire XML schemas:>

5 comments about Oracle Data Warehousing.
  1. I found it to have a good explanation of general data warehousing terms and concepts, but not enought depht in terms of planning and designing for a data warehouse. I wouldn't recommend buying it.

  2. The Dodge and Gorman book is much, much better than this one. Also - buy a copy of Ralph Kimballs Data Warehouse Toolkit - its applies to DW and DM's. Another good book is Kimball's Data Warehouse Lifecycle book, but the Toolkit book is more concise.

  3. useless book for datawarehousing

  4. OK, if you work with Oracle there are some things, that will help you. Otherwise, if you search for more practical or even theoretical books, then look better for Ralph Kimball. This guy is the best in this field.

  5. Aimed at all levels of users, administrators and architects, "Oracle Data Warehousing" offers basics, project management, and technical tutorials.

The lightly referenced, verbose, chapters span: what is a data warehouse; things to consider; building the team; managing the data warehouse project; moving the data into the warehouse; Oracle's data warehousing features; data mining; datamarts; metadata; RAID; keeping your data safe; Oracle Express & OLAP Solutions; data mining tools; datamart tools; index and tuning issues.

Strengths revolve around the attractive use of heading, lists, charts, screen-shots, and code examples, and the topical relevance to business of data warehousing.

Weaknesses include: the 45% excess words for content, typos; simplistic business examples; a seeming Oracle advert focus; need for business success anecdotes; a need for more science/ rigor about machine learning and artificial intelligence; and a need for more about wider industry trends/tools.

Overall this needed better editing, more business content, and more rigor to be considered worthwhile.

5 comments about McSe SQL Server 6.5 Administration in 14 Days (Sams Teach Yourself).
  1. For a good understanding of SQL server, this book is pretty good. Chapters are well organized, and understanding the concepts pretty well. Studying for SQL server test to obtain MSCE + Internet.

    David MSCE, MCP+I, CNE 3,4

  2. Much more thorough and complete than the NR book and the questions/answers are correct. Well edited and well written. Very good source for SQL Server 6.5 exam but needs supplementation with additional questions such as Transcender.

  3. This book does do a good job of covering the material required for the 70-026 exam. Questions and labs are fairly reasonable as well. HOWEVER, while this book is reasonably complete, the writing is phenominally boring. This one will deffinately put you to sleep

  4. This book does a good job of giving the reader the basics in a very dry, technical way. This is more of a technical manual. It does not do a good job in troubleshooting or in preparing for real world problems. It does cover about 80% of what is needed for the exam.

  5. I enjoyed the book. I think that the book no longer is current.

    Thanks.

  1. This is a great book for people beginning to learn SQL Server. There are many step by step examples of how to use, maintain, manage and program SQL Server. However, I don't think this book or it's examples were edited. THERE ARE MANY ERRORS IN THIS BOOK, mainly in program syntax (which are easy to fix if you know SQL). If they could come out with a second (edited) edition, this book could get 5 stars.

  1. Easy to follow -- & masterfully written -- by the HP NonStop Security guru's themselves: XYPRO Technology Corp! This is an excellent handy-dandy guide for the NonStop NSK OS (HP's trade name for the once-known & well-respected Tandem Computers, Inc.). System Managers, HP NonStop Consultants, HP NonStop Professional Services personnel, etc. That said, XYPRO should truly consider writing an HP NonStop "Bible" covering a wide array & variety of system task when dealing with NSK Operating System -- arguably the absolute finest and most reliable Transaction Processing OS on this planet!! Again, thumbs up to XYPRO for being the pioneers when it comes to finally bringing the somewhat little-known and underappreciated world of HP NonStop NSK OS computing & Security to the forefront!

4 comments about Sybase Dba Survival Guide/Book and Disk.
  1. This is not a book about SQL or data modeling. You willnot find the syntax for queries or the rules of normalization in thisbook. This is solely a book on how to install, monitor, and configure Sybase SQL Server, but that gave the authors plenty of material to cover.
The book is well written: easy to understand and remarkably friendly given the subject matter. There are plenty of hints and tips from guys who have learned the subject the hard way. If you are responsible for the operation of a Sybase server, you will want this book.

  2. Excellent checklists that pullout for quick reference. Easy to read and find things for reference. However, it is version SQL Server 10 but version 11 is available - see Sybase 11 DBA Survial Guide

  3. To the dba, this book joins the plethora of useless bound material available on the subject. Did you purchase Sybase? Well, use the vendor doc. This book is practically a verbatim copy of Sybase's own documentation.

    Nice cover though.

  4. It is an excellent book i can say proudly.Because it isgiving screen by screen explanations.easy examples and exercises.how to take backups and restores the huge databases.

1 comments about Microsoft Data Mining: Integrated Business Intelligence for e-Commerce and Knowledge Management.
  1. To the seasoned data mining professional, there are many other books on data mining that I would recommend before this one. However, for the manager who has been asked to implement a solution based on the data mining capabilities of the SQL Server 2000 DBMS, this book could provide a starting point in the form of 'Microsoft best practices', as well a concise introduction to data mining in general.
