- This book is a text book. It has good exercises to learn from. It is a little difficult to use as a reference book. It could use some more tables and examples.
- This is a text book - this book is written specifically for college classes. Any books you see that are published by Course Technology are text books.
This book is written in a format that user's with only SQL knowledge and are brand new to PL/SQL can learn the fundamentals of PL/SQL programming. The text covers all the concepts for the Oracle9i PL/SQL program units certification exam. Every chapter contains hands-on exercises to illustrate each concept. The data files for the book can be downloaded from the publishers web site. Chapters covering dynamic SQL and programming with Oracle object technology is also included. Thanks for your interest!
- I've had the distinct pleasure of being taught by Ms. Casteel for SQL. I later used this book on my own to learn PL/SQL and it is the closest text you will get to having her actually sitting in her room. If you want examples that follow a specific path to building one concept upon another. This textbook is implemented in my local Authorized Oracle Academic Initiative Center so you know you will be getting quality instruction in PL?SQL with this book. I think it beats OraclePress hands down for its accuracy and in-depth description of each concept. Get this book if you ever thought the other publishers tend to be too vague in conveying PL/SQL to you. Worth the money.

2 comments about Oracle Web Application Programming for PL/SQL Developers (Prentice Hall PTR Oracle Series).
- I found this book very helpful as it explains the basics in a very clear, easy to understand language and has lots of examples. It's a high quality interactive manual: first the concepts are described, then I was presented with exercises, which is very good as most of us learn through practice, experince. The answers and clarifications which are given after the exercises unit helped me monitor my understanding and in the end I had the complete application and a great feeling of achievement.
- Written much like the math textbooks of your youth (complete with exercises at the end of each section), Oracle Web Application Programming for Pl/SQL Developers is a godsend for those of us who knew you could write web apps using PL/SQL, but lacked the actual syntax to do so. Book can be used as either a reference or a tutorial guide, given that it is both comprehensive and chock full of sample code. Companion website is handy so you can copy and paste. Bottom line, if you want your browser to talk to your database and make it do neat tricks, this book will serve you well.

5 comments about MCSA/MCSE/MCDBA: SQL Server 2000 Administration Study Guide, 2nd Edition (70-228).
- I really enjoyed this book. It's explaniations are incredibly good and it explains SQL Server very well.
However, the exam questions suck. Two Examples: Page 230: Question 4 - It says the correct answer is D, but there is no such command as sp_grantaccess ( It should be sp_grantdbaccess ) Page 232: Question 8 - again, there is no such command as sp_activateapprole, it's sp_setapprole. I could go on, but it's really frustrating trying to use a book for an exam when it misleads like this.
- This book is very uninspired. The layout is pretty good, but I am finding lots of places where there are incomplete explanations which causes lots of wasted time. If you already know the product that wouldn't be bad, but then you wouldn't need this book. Look for a better baisc Admin book.
- Coming from Oracle background I am currently using this book to prepare for my MCDBA certification. I would not rate myself as beginner because I have dealt with MS SQL Server on many occasions but not heavily. I am pacing myself with one chapter a day. So far I read about 5 chapters and I would admit that the content is good. Like any other technical book, this one also has some mistakes. In my case I started seeing the mistake on pages 145 and 146. On those pages the authors stated that to see the file id you need to run in the SQL Analyzer the stored procedure sp_helpdb. That is not true at all it should be sp_helpfile. I caught that mistake quickly because I really understood the previous information given and related to file, and I also tested the stored procedures listed in the book. I did check the errata on sybex website nothing is listed concerning that mistake but there are some other corrected mistakes though on the website.
As I always do I don't rely on one source for my certification exams. I have got another book and I am planning to get a third one too. I will go through all of them before I go take the exam end of May. I will try to post another review after I took exam.
My overall impression on this book is the book is well-written and easy to follow. So far I am getting useful information out of the book. And that helps me understand the objectives on the exam. I am doing pretty good with the review questions at the end of the chapters. After going through half of the book I think I like what I see and I would recommend this book but not as the only source to study for the exam.
- I bought this book because 1)I have absolutely ZERO experience with Microsoft SQL 2000 and 2)I have used Sybex books in the past to help me gain knowledge of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, of which I have passed all exams.
However, with this book I am very dissappointed. Examples are imcomplete, not clear and generally leave the reader hanging as to what to do next. More often than not, when working my way through the excercises I have to go to the SQL page on the Microsoft website and try and find the information that was left out of the book. It's a tremendous waste of time and very frustrating. If the authors of this book want to assume that every reader out there already has knowledge of how SQL server is installed and administered, then they should be writing handbooks and pocket guides for existing IT administrators and engineers.
Like many people out there who are working on a certification, I bought this book to learn the ins-and-outs of SQL installation and administration. As such, I need to understand every step as much as possible. Unfortunately both the authors and Sybex have failed me this time.
- I've not decided to get this one before because i already had a couple of SQL books for the 70-228 (Unleashed, 70-228 for Dummies and SQL in 10 min from Ben Forta) book's reviews were not so good either. But ... i went to a major book store last night and i was able to hold the book on my own hands and read some chapters. My 1st impression, after read a few pages quickly, was a good one. Nice explanations...a lot of graphics (i love that, it helped me a lot when i'm studying) It's the kind of book you like to read and you enjoy the lecture at same time. But ... but ... it is not complete and it just gave a quick brief on most of topics.
My advice is to get this one only if you already have another book source too (let's say SQL Unleashed). You simply won't pass using this book only. It's a nice book (EXCELLENT EXPLANATIONS AND GRAPHICS) but can't be your main choice.
