1 comments about Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Resource Guide (It-Resource Kit).
  1. I found SQL Server 7.0 Resource guide to be short on specifics and would describe it as a general overview of 7.0. To troubleshoot problems with replication I had to refer to previous versions of Inside SQL Sever 6.5. If you already know SQL server from pervious versions this book will not add much to your library.

5 comments about MCDBA SQL Server 7 Test Yourself Practice Exams (Exams 70-028 & 70-029).
  1. I happen to like books with lots of questions to test my readiness for a certain exam. For the most part, this book accomplishes that (hence 3 stars). It does, however, have many subtle errors so you need to check each answer you get wrong with an authoritative resource, like SQL Server Books Online. For example, is says to upgrade SQL 6.5 to SQL 7.0 the SQL 6.5 system needs SP4 - which is incorrect, it needs SP3. Lots of little mistakes like that. By all means, use this book as a resource, but NEVER as your ONLY one. You'd also be wise to double check every wrong answer you get (which of course consumes that much more of your valuable time).

  2. I brought the book for my 028 and 029 examination. I found the book full of typo and spelling mistake. Sometimes I doubt the correctness of the answer. The practice questions are stragiht forward wherars the questions in the exam are much more complicated. It test your background knowledge but not good enough for the examination.

  3. This book seriously lacks the depth and difficulty that would be required to have a taste of the real Design exam. I have not used this book to pass the Admin exam, so I cannot comment on that. The only reason to buy this title is to give yourself a start. It is not by any means representative of the actual exam. May I suggest that you study from "Inside SQL Server 7.0" from Microsoft Press and from "Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming" from Wrox. Both of these are wonderful books. All in all, if you have the cash to stash, you can buy this title as well, But I would advise against using it to measure your preraredness to the exam.

Good Luck Gabor Bona (B.Sc. MCSE MCDBA MCP+I)

  4. Don't waste your time or money on this one. I went through the MS MOC classes, read Inside SQL (a must have for anyone studing for the MCDBA cert.) and then bought this book. I also read the Troy Techs. This book was way off of both tests, 70-28 and 70-29. To get it done, study the MOC materials, read Inside SQL, and work with the product as much as possible. But don't buy this book.

  5. Book is not detail enough to guide both beginner or experience professional to pass the exam. ALL books from Syngress Media for MCSD OR MCSE are bad for the exam... do not get it!!!!

3 comments about The Microsoft(r) SQL Server Survival Guide.
  1. I found this book to be weak on specific details. It spends far more time discussing generalities like Client/Server, RDBMS concepts than it does on running MS MS-SQL Server. I ended up buying sqlserver6.5 unleashed to fill in the very considerable gaps left by this book. Better, would be a combination of sqlserver unleashed or dba survival combined with the MS documentation. Also, there is a very good newsgroup at www.dejanews.com that has been invaluable

  2. This book has lots of helpful information that is not otherwise covered in the SQL Server manuals or online documentation. There are plenty of facts and tidbits regarding how to configure SQL Server and use the RDBMS as an application platform, as well as info on how the various configuration parameters play off one another.

The section on replication is pretty sparse, though, and doesn't quite jibe with the product itself, since SQLServer's replication is really hard to keep up and running.

All in all, found the book to be pure gold, with a wealth of information. This is not a substitute for the manuals though, some experience is assumed. Not a books for novices, not is it a substitute for RTFM. Rather, a complement to the manuals.

  3. There isn't enough good examples or SQL specific knowledge contained in this book to be really useful to anyone other than a beginning to average SQL user. Most of the book is just general database concepts. For a survival guide one would expect in-depth troubleshooting and lots of specific real-life examples pertaining to SQL server...you'll find very little of that. A better title for this book should have been "Overview of relational database concepts and practices".

4 comments about The Comprehensive Guide to the JDBC SQL API: Develop High-Powered Database Solutions for Your Site.
  1. The book actually covers how to program java in the first five chapters. Only the last one/third covers jdbc. Wait for a better selection.

  2. The first third of the book is Java...cool.
The Second third is SQL...OK, but none of the screen-shots line up their captions. It really makes it hard to follow. It's a good thing I already knew SQL or I'd be lost right now.
The Last third covers JDBC...well almost. The essential theory of connecting to a Database is covered but there is little practical demonstration on how to use this connection.

I wish I could get my money back. ($54.00 from "some other bookstore")

  3. Not only does this book fail to deliver on its promise to be a "Comprehensive Guide to the SQL API", it provides information that is just plain wrong. The first page I read (301) had serious errors, showing methods with incorrect (and inconsistent) argument types. A quick glance showed the book full of this type of error. This is inexcusable. The beginner will be confused, the experienced frustrated, and both will quickly realize that the book should should be thrown away. A book that has not been edited should not be published.

  4. I had no knowledge of JAVA or JDBC and a limited understanding of SQL. I found the book extremely informative and well written Given the enormity of the three topics covered the author does an excelent job of introducing these. I don't think this book will suit professional Java Coders but if you want to understand the concept of how JAVA, JDBC and SQL work together this is an excellent book. A great book to get started
