  1. I have read this book, and found it is quite useful for SQL. I would recommend to anyone!!

  2. It is amazing what gets into print. This is a Bad Book. It is full of insane rants and inaccurate statements. There are good books on PosgtreSQL. PLEASE go buy one of them and not this.

I suspect the first two reviews are actually by Al Dev.

  3. All you need to do to evaluate how wonderful this book is is to read the introductory section entitled "Laws of Physics Apply to Software."

A web search based on that phrase should find you the same elsewhere on the web; most if not all of the material in this book has assortedly been presented under such titles as a "Linux Database HOWTO" or "PostgreSQL HOWTO." (Originally it was called the "Database HOWTO"; people objected because there are other databases on Linux than just PostgreSQL, and the HOWTO is basically a "cheering session for PostgreSQL.)

It is still mirrored, here and there; the Linux Documentation Project indicates that the PostgreSQL HOWTO has been "removed for review," which is rather suggestive of the quality of the material...

  4. This book might be useful as the basis for a game where players get points for finding misspellings and typos (Look Inside the Introduction to play for yourself). As a technical reference, it looks useless.

  5. I've been in the computer business for 20 years and this ranks as the worst book I've ever bought. I wish I could say something positive about it, but can't think of anything.

  1. I think this is the most fantastic and authoritative book on Access and SQL Server that I have ever read. It is filled with excellent examples that draw on the authors personal experience. A must read!!!

  1. This book describes a lot of things (if not everything) about SQL Server, but very brief on every point. I really can not learn how to use SQL Server from this book. It is an introduction book.

  2. This book is one of the worst books I have ever read. The examples are poorly explained and teach you absolutely nothing. When I picked up this book I had some (though limited) knowledge of SQL. After reading this book I found myself confused and discouraged. If you are into ASP and SQL I would recommend Beginning ASP Databases (Wrox Press) by John Kauffman.

  3. Since I had only background with MS Access(and no background with SQL Server at all),I had a choice between the book-Sams Teach Yourself in 21 Days- and this one.I took this one and I am very pleased with my choice. With this book, it was easy for me to understand Transact-SQL language and administration of SQL Server.(The last part of the book:Data Warehousing is rather superficial, but this topic is not important for me.)The book is great as a first-time user handbook as well as a syntax reference later on. I am now reading a book from Kalen Delaney-Inside SQL Server 7- and this book was the best starting point for it.

  4. This is the first book at Amazon I have ever taken the time and trouble to preview, but I want to prevent someone from making the same mistake I did based on this book's title. This is the last book I would ever give a beginner on Microsoft SQL Server 7.0. At times it bogs down to the point it is sheer will power to force oneself to continue on with it. This book is way too detailed in some places and in other places is way too shallow of its coverage of MS SQL. To get a person acquainted and familar with the MS SQL enviroment, this book is way too deep and gets too involved in the programming aspects of SQL. A far better read for the beginner would be the Dummies book, "Microsoft® SQL Server 7 For Dummies" or the Sams series, "Sams Teach Yourself Microsoft Sql Server 7.0 in 21 Days". By the end of this book I was skimming through much of its content so I could finish the book and put it away. Maybe in a year, after I have worked more deeply with SQL Server I might come back to this book when I am at its more appropriate level, an intermediate. By the way, I am an MCSE with experience with Exchange, Internet Information Server, Proxy Server, and some prior working knowledge of MS SQL 7.0 before I ever came to this book.

  5. This book is simply a regurgitation of SQL Server's Books OnLine, except filled with typos. You would be better off just reading BOL if you want the "here are the 3 ways to do this" style found here. There is no input from the author on why you should do things one way instead of another, advantages or disadvantages of programming or administration options, etc. I don't suggest this book. I do suggest "Professional SQL Server 7.0 Programming" by Rob Vieira, even for beginners. There you will find some common sense advise from an experienced programmer, along with the "how to".
