5 comments about Building Microsoft SQL Server 7 Web Sites.
  1. If you already know how to set up NT server, IIS and SQL, this book is not for you. There are not much useful information for serious developers.

  2. Having worked with Access for a long time, I wanted a book that would help with constructing sites in SQL Server. This book was way too simplistic and spends far too much time on installing NT and IIS, and not enough on 'building sites with SQL Server'. Only cursory look at ASP code to actually interact with your site, almost all of it via Interdev. Index is lacking in detail, even common interface elements. If you're a very beginner, then maybe this book will be good for you, but I'd look elsewhere.

  3. This book concentrates on the mechanics of setting up NT, IIS, etc. and has very little about actually building SQL server Web sites. There's almost no guidence about how to design a relational database with SQL server.

  4. I've been working with SQL Server since version 6.0 and have been building web sites using SQL Serer for 3 years. I reviewed this book for a friend. It's one of the worst technical books I've ever read and I'm shocked it actually made it to print. It's evident the author does not have a firm grasp on even the basics of SQL Server administraion or development.

  5. The title and the index imply a book with a large amount of useful information covering a wide range of web site development subjects but focusing on using SQL 7 on web sites. On page 261 of 436, more than halfway through the book, you are still waiting for the author to start the main subject - interesting, he never does. It is a very fast read, because there is no depth to the book. I wasted my money - don't waste yours. How did this book ever get to print?

5 comments about Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Unleashed.
  1. I read the others Inside SQL Server , SQL Server DBA Survial Guide, Inside SQL Server; but this is heads above the rest. The detailed low level analysis of walking data pages, distribution stats, Query showplan breakdown and Query analysis with trace flags, is awesome ! I only hope that the authors do a true upgrade for SQL 7. (Some of the other books are only paying lip service to the new features and changes in SQL 7.) Easily the best Advanced SQL 6.5 book out there.

  2. I have read 4 SQL Server 6.5 books to get up to speed for the MCSE exams. This is clearly the most thorough and well written. Deserves 5 stars overall. Here are my picks for SQL Server 6.5 books. 1) SQL Server Unleashed, 2) SQL Server DBA Survival Guide (btw you can download this at www.mcp.com), 3) Inside SQL Server (Soukup), then finally 4) SQL Server Programming Unleashed (I thought this one was not as good for DBA, and was pretty mediocre for a programming book.)

Not only is this an excellent SQL Server book, but it is one of the best technical books I've read on a subject.

I usually scour the review section at Amazon before making book purchases to avoid wasting time. Hope this helps you on your road to DBA-dom.

  3. This was a great book because it covered a range of topics that in many other books I read were ignored. However there were many typos and mistakes in the code. All in all worth buying, it helped me a great deal with preparing for my certification.

  4. I was hired as a DBA with no experience in Microsoft SQL 6.5 server. This book was a godsend. The style is thorough, concise and understandable. I have found answers to messy problems which has saved thousands in consulting fees. (and my reputation). We are a small company with a small IT staff so resources are low. This book is truly helpful. I'm sure I'll get the SQL (get it ) for the SQL 7.0 version when we upgrade.

  5. I tend to rate technical books on the relative percentage of times that technical problems are solved after referring to the text. Based on that evaluation method, this book fails miserably. I'm astonished at how useless this book has been. It seems to cover subjects JUST ENOUGH TO LEAVE YOU HANGING. I could truly provide example after example however, I have neither the time nor the inclination to do so. Having never posted an Amazon review before, I do this now in hopes of deterring one or two people from buying this book and making the same mistake I made.
