3 comments about Filemaker Pro 9 Advanced Upgrade.
  1. I used FileMaker since version 4 came out. Every version I have used since version 4 makes adding/deleting/changes, etc. not a job, but as simple as opening up FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced.

Importing pictures, movies or anything you wish to import is so simple I don't understand why beginners of Database programs just won't give FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced a try and see for themselves. In fact, it's like opening up a word processor program with a blank piece of paper waiting for your words to form on a blank piece of paper.

Don't take my word for it, give FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced a try.

  2. I've never used FileMaker Pro until I started working at my current job. They started off with FM3 and I came in under FM6 then upgraded to FM7. We now got FM9 and wow, what a difference! I'm working on the conversion from FM7 to 9 (there is really no need to convert your prior databses, I'm just adding features) and already it's looking better! Conditional formatting is a lifesaver...I have certain fields go "RED" when they are missing something that the DB user needs to see. Then for some fields I have blue or red text to indicate active or some sort of inactive status.

Further is the existing tab control and web viewer. Beautiful things you can impliment. Since we use some mandatory 'webware', I can have my DB users access from within our database so they can do what they need to do there while viewing the record (instead of toggling back and forth).

Let's not forget the export to PDF feature has been advanced to allow multiple reports/PDFs to be put together. Perfect!

I'd love to do the SQL import/connection but it's not allowed, but I'm sure this is a super feature for anyone who wants to have one super easy to use database.

FileMaker Pro is simply awesome...I was able to get a database completed in under 24 hours that was taking the place I worked for over 3 years in planning and meetings. Although it could never be the final solution (since we max out at the time 5 concurrent users and we needed unlimited), it got the job done. That's the power of FM...allowing the USERs (not IT) to get their databases up and running and the flexibility to modify as needed without IT involvement. Now IT can always be involved when you want to get complex, etc. But the power to build your own database for any project is there (I've done it for several).

If you are using FM7 or below, this is a no brainer upgrade. For those with 8, it is a recommended upgrade. For those with 8.5 it's your call. The new features make it worth it and the upgrade pricing should meet everyone's budget.

I use the 'Advanced' features to create runtime solutions that I then put into a self installer (such as InnoSetup or InstallShield depending on how much budget you have). This way other users in my organization who don't have filemaker and don't need to 'network' like others in my group, can gain access to their own version of a database. In addition the ability to add 'tooltips' (little boxes of text over buttons, fields, text, etc) is a lifesaver. Think of it like a mini-help system for your users. You can even put in field or calculations into the tooltips. Finally you can create custom menus and optimize the files...things you can't do with the regular version of FM.

Do you just want to make databases and not care about the advanced features (such as saving your database to a 'runtime' so anyone can use it, optimizing the database file, tooltips, or custom menus)? Then you can purchase the regular version of FileMaker Pro and save some cash (in addition you can upgrade from a 'regular' version of FileMaker Pro to this Advanced version, you don't have to buy 9 then 9 Advanced) Filemaker Pro 9 or upgrade: Filemaker Pro 9 Upgrade

  3. An upgrade from 8.5 to 9.0 at a cost of $290 is overpriced for the few features that have been added. But FMI needed to somehow fund the development of Bento so they've put the bite on their dedicated developers.

3 comments about VB6 Programming Starter Kit.
  1. i have been programing in vb for about 3 years now and i bought this book and found it very useful. I was taught alot although i did skip a lesson here and there. This book looked at all aspects of programing and basicly everything you will need for your projects. I then passed this book onto my friend who has no programing experince at all. In a few weeks he was programing almost as good as me. So i like to recomend this to all levels of the programing scene.

  2. I was disappointed that the descriptions and reviews of this product did not point out that the software cannot compile (a feature of VB) and is missing some other features so that an upgrade to VB is necessary to gain all features use. Otherwise, the book and software are good to get down VB basics.

  3. This package lack's two main features. It does not contain any help files and it does not compile. If I knew that it didn't contain help I would have never bought it. The package includes a basic introductory book which is not bad. Another book is included on the cd rom( this book is actually a more substantial one).
If you have windows Xp I would strongly recommend to buy the vb.net standard.

  1. This is a great product - but I think it retails for $2,000 not $20,000

  2. The price is correct. It's not $2000. Note, it's a processor license, not a server license.

  3. The cost of the processor license MSRP is $20,000.00 and it not only covers the processor, but also the computer the processor is in. You need one for each processor in the computer, and instead of using server license's, processor license's give you unlimited User and Device CAL's I have a Quad Xeon with 4 processor license's and I can connect an unlimmited number of user's or devices http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/faq.mspx
It's the way to go !
