5 comments about Microsoft Visual C++ .NET Standard.
- I just received my MS C++ .NET and I am not happy with it. The help function does work AT ALL (it's Explorer-Based, and all it does is tell me my server is offline), despite several attempts at re-installation. When I go to Microsoft's support page, it tells me my support options have expired, effectively telling me where to go if I actually want their product to work.
Let's see what Borland has to offer ...
- Hello. I was planning to buy Visual C++ 6 a while back but then Microsoft came out with Visual C++.NET. I bought the book Visual C++ 6 for Dummies and that is when Microsoft switched. I was hoping that someone who has Vusyal C++.NET or someone who is knowledgable about this subject could help me out. Is Visual C++.NET just an upgraded verison of C++ 6? Would C++ 6 for Dummies still work with C++.NET? I do not know where else I could get an anwser for this. If anyone knows where I could ask my question, that would be great too. Thanks for your help.
- Visual C++ .Net is a Upgrade of sorts to Visual C++ 6 it has added features and the .net framework If you plan to go with a book that is made for visual c++ 6 i would go with visual c++ 6 because the book is
product specific. Iwould suggest ditching the book Grabbing Visual C +++.net and getting C++ Primer a book that will teach you to program c++ and not just to use Microsoft version 6 of the IDE.
- Please please help!!
I've learned c++ very well but I don't know!! should I go with c++ .net or c++Builder?? Which one is better????? Please help...
- Note after spending a good bit of time with this software, I felt compelled to rewrite my review.
I use Visual Studio as an editor when I write code for Linux/Unix, and also to develop native XP/2000 device drivers and windows application code. This version is basically an upgrade of Visual C++ 6, with .NET, managed classes, and better template and ANSI standards adherence. Any problems you had with STL are resolved with this version. Note, on some code you will get some errors on code that compiled without warning under VC6, due to a stricter compiler. Unfortunately, there are some negatives. The biggest is a rewrite of the Visual Studio IDE. The Visual Studio C++ class wizard is gone. Yes. Gone. You will have to spend time (and a large amount of it) to relearn how to add events, message handlers, and otherwise get up to speed with the VB-ish property window. What would take me five minutes (drag and drop of an ActiveX control) ended up taking several hours of sifting through the help files. This version is basically the academic version, with some crippled functionality. This version will not allow you to generate optimized code (/Ox switches are disabled), and some other functionality has been removed. Also, you will want to have at least 512 MB, or it will crawl. I keep reverting back to Visual Studio C++ because of the .NET's lethargy. Luckily, unlike previous versions of Visual C++, the two versions can coexist on your system peacefully. Further, if you intend to do any .NET development, you may be somewhat disappointed as .NET support is primarily focused on C# and VB. There are no examples for C++ using .NET assemblies, etc.

5 comments about Microsoft Visual C# .NET Standard.
- I tried to install the program in two different machines, one with windows 2000 pro and the other with Windows XP Pro. When I run the application I got the error message the application cannot run. I then click on help but the windows does not allow me to see the message behind, being impossible to move it. I am disappointed.
- The ide, the compiler and the whole package itself is great. The shame is that what microsoft calls c# is only java... Too lame... By the way it's as good as java, so it has all its pro and its bad sides
- As others have said, you can't beat the price, and you'll actually own a legal copy of a Visual Studio product. Perfect if you want to write your own little program and sell it on the side :) If you're not familiar with C#, then you'll definitely need a book to get you started -- I recommend Programming Windows in C# by Charles Petzold and Inside C# by Tom Archer. It's a very fun language to program in -- has many of the same concepts as Java. You can also interoperate with the Win32 API and COM.
The editor itself is awesome -- it automatically indents the curly braces and lets you set up colors and all that, like Visual C++ 6.0. It has something new called outlining -- which means you can collapse and expand whole sections of code by clicking on the little pluses. You can also enter XML comments, which means it can automatically generate XML-formatted documentation. The one thing that's a drag is that you can only create certain types of applications in the IDE: Windows apps, command-line apps, ASP.NET Web applications, and web services. This means you can't create a Forms control or a DLL in the environment. (But you can do it on the command line, if you take the time to read the documentation.)
- I love the .NET framework and the C# language. However, one thing that just flat out [made me angry] when I got this in the mail was the fact that you could not connect to any database othre then MS Access and SQL Desktop Addition through the Database connection wizard. I can not think of any reason whatsoever that Microsoft would have done something like this, but it made me extreamly aggravated. I use the Enterprise version at work, and purchased the Standard Edition for my home seeing that I only really use the C# language any more and did not need all of the extras that came with higher priced versions. I imagine that there are several other people out there just like me who would want to do the same, and I just think that it was a bad mistake on Microsoft's part. You can still make connections using handwritten code, but at the same time, is that not going against the point of buying a piece of software such as this; to cut out as much handwritten coding as possible?
- The Amazon quote above is misleading "On-screen emulator for Pocket PC applications". Now wouldn't that statement lead you to believe that you can build and test applications for the Pocket PC using this package. Well don't believe it.
It states it clearly on the Box that "build device-based applications and solutions" is not part of this package and will require Visual Studio.net Professional is required. They fool you by allowing you to build ASP.NET pages to be displayed on the CE.NET device using the web browser. Of course you can just as easily do this with a simple text editor. Unfortunately I had already opened the box by the time I realized that the Amazon web page was lying and as a result I now own another piece of software that has no value for me and get to go spend a bunch more money to buy Visual Studio Professional to do a job that Amazon claimed this packaged could accomplish. The tragic thing is that you can accomplish nothing with this package that you can not do just as easily with the free Microsoft download and a decent text editor. For that matter I have already written and tested tens of thousands of lines of C# code and the CSC command line compiler. I only purchased this package because I wanted to compile and test for windows CE devices as the statement above would indicate that you accomplish. Amazon words their return policy so that I can not return this even though it was their false or at best misleading advertising that caused me to purchase and install the product. This is a great a way to ruin my loyalty as a customer. Companies wonder why their customers are violating copyright agreements to avoid paying for software, well in my mind somebody owes me the cost of this worthless package so how excited am I going to be to pay either company the next time around. The golden rule could be used here: "If you want me to treat you fairly then you should treat me fairly." joe@xdobs.com

- I'd read reviews of NuSphere MySQL on other websites, which said it was great for newbies: easy installation and great tools.
I'm a veteran internet programmer, but finally bought it for two reasons: I needed an easy way to get my customers up and running quickly, on a common webserver platform, and I wanted versions of the tools running under Windows as well as Linux. This package turned out to be a lifesaver. It comes with lots of features, including out-of-the-box, easy to install and use, Apache, Perl, PHP and MySQL, all configured correctly, and working on multiple platforms. I found the integrated phpmyadmin utility a great way to manage my MySQL databases. Best feature: remote install, so I can install it on a headless machine at my ISP.
- Lots of good stuff in this box. Good documentation. THe headliner is the NuSphere database: it is just like MySQL except it has real row-locking so it isn't SLO when multiple users are beating on it, and it has auto-crash recovery, so my beeper doesn't go off.
Install is sweet, and works remotely for headless installs. Full webserver middleware stack (Apache, nusphere MySQL, Perl and PHP) installs on Linux and windoze, even on virgen systems. If you've ever tried to get bugzilla up under windoze, you'll like this: it comes with a multi-platform bugzilla for free. Some dba tools in the bundle, some apache stuff, but I haven't tried it. For me, its the database stupid. Nice support but telephone is extra, you have to use email.
- I purchased NuSphere MySQL directly from NuSphere after reading reviews on the internet. I first used it on Windows and was very happy. It installs very quickly with just one or two clicks, and I had a web server, database, and development environment all running. Much better than Microsoft PWS with FrontPage, and much faster.
I recently switched to Linux for my website development, and was happy to see that it worked just as well. All the same tools, fast one-click install, although the user interface was easier under Windows. Very good organization of the files, too, making for easy backups. Last month I purchased NuSphere PHPed, and it works very well with the NuSphere MySQL, but is more for professional developers.
- I tried this software and couldn't create a simple database with out reading a lot and wasn't easy to configure.
- Save your money. Not even as good as freeware.
