2 comments about Internet & Intranet Applications with Powerbuilder 6.
- This book covers every aspect of programming in PowerBuilder for the net. This is not a difficult subject, but it is complex. There are a lot of setup issues and there is a change in programming style from the traditional PowerBuilder. This book covers all of that in easy to understand style. It does so completely and in such a fashion as to make it easy to follow.
I would recommend this book to all PowerBuilder programmers, you never know when you are going to be faced with a PowerBuilder project that has to be on a net.
- This was an excellent technical jumpstart into using Web.PB and other PowerBuilder 6 internet development tools. Fortunately, Powerbuilder 7 is much richer (read better) for web development. But unfortunately this book only covers PB 6 techniques. I would still recommend it for folks needing to get PB6 to do web stuff. There are even fewer books out on PB7 and EAS.
I would also highly recommend "Distributed Application Development with PowerBuilder 6.0" by Michael J. Barlotta. (another Manning book).

5 comments about Teach Yourself... Powerbuilder 5 (Teach Yourself).
- Structure of the book is well laid. Clarity and progression are excellent. Real world examples give a practical touch to reading. It is good bed time reading
- If you're new to PowerBuilder but have programming experience, you might be able to learn something from this book.
If you're new to programming, pass this one up entirely.
The author has some very good concepts to teach and covers PowerBuilder features well. However, the example programs in the book DO NOT match the program listings on the disk and the author has a tendency to jump ahead of the reader in the examples. This causes compiler warnings that are not explained. If the reader is willing to put up with the frustration involved, there are some valuable lessons to be learned by printing out the disk source code and comparing it to the text.
All in all, the author has the right idea, but extensive proof-reading and editing are necessary before it will become a useful text for those wanting to learn PowerBuilder
- If you're a programmer new at Powerbuilder 5. This books is for you. Be warned that there are errors associated with this book. Plenty of typos causing compilation errors. If you're an optimistic coder, this book will be benificial as you find typo problems, fix them, red-line the errors in the book and learn along the way. If you're a pessimist, you'll SCREAM!!!
- The author covers just about everything in PowerBuilder but that's about it. Lots of typos and his explanations aren't clear or confusing in his topics and examples. Seems like the author rushed to get the book printed or didn't care enough to do a good job. I'll need to buy another PowerBuilder book to supplement what's lacking in this book.
- Parts of the book are really good. But I have found errors in the code and steps were left out while descriping the process of adding controls to windows. All of this leaves you confussed. The author should have worked the code just as he is explanning it to ensure that it works correctly.

- Instead of wasting your time having you build applications you'll never use, this book gets you into real Powerbuilder code. It takes time to explain some of the basics, but it is a well-written reference for intermediate to expert PB5 programmers. Excellent coverage of the new PB5 features and great help in migrating from 4.0! I recommend any PB developer to add this book to their library.
- One of the best book I read on powerbuilder. it is a good learning book for the intermediate & expert PB5 programmer.
